Seinfeld was the first English show I ever watched. I watched it in 2011-12 in comedy Central. No show has ever been able be more favourite of mine that this. I wish there was some way I could watch it again in a way that would support the creators.
SHB Both shows with Bob Einstein were hilarious. The Lewis CK boat story was brilliant in it’s observational humor in a way Seinfeld’s will never be. John Stewart’s Gremlin story was funny. Steve Harvey’s was funny because of his obvious delight at the Buick.. Jim Carrey was great telling his Letterman experiences. The Best episodes were: Garry Shandling, Jim Gaffigan, and Norm McDonald.
Seinfeld's humor is about stating the obvious which is not obvious to everyone. It is about applying an alternative perspective to the mundane and everyday occurrences of life. Like why are you using headphones. The humor about nothing is about that which is everyday life questioned from the perspective of the humorist using the tools of an anthropologist surveying a distinct culture. Insights which trigger one's discomfort about seeing oneself from the awkward perspectives we often avoid or simply have never realized about how we act or what motivates us. That's Seinfeld. But it really feels like his time is over. The reason being that his humor relies on a level of humility in which he shares these observations as if standing along side us being as bemused as we become. Instead, he is gradually exhibiting a certain superiority and arrogance as though he has figured it all out and no longer depends on others getting the joke. He is no longer the "everyman". He "doesn't want your feedback" because he is certain of his own funniness and his life perspective which no longer depends on you. He's a god-zillion-aire! In "Comedian's in Cars..." he flaunts his success in the style of Jay Leno's Garage and purports that "Comedians" have some special monopoly on humor! Most of those shows are just obnoxious and rely on star power and materialism, not humor.
I agree. He comes off with this strange superiority complex in The Comedians in Cars show.. I mean he writes jokes.. he is a comedian..which is tough..but he’s not toiled away solving the worlds problems. He got lucky. He made it. Well done. Get over yourself. You’re not a god
@@ghostshipone It must be really hard to remain humble when you are worshiped. Seinfeld speaks of his upbringing in middle Long Island to parents who seemed emotionally distant from him. He had access to material resources and friends, but not to an intimate acknowledgement by his parents. Like many of the comedians of his time, his humor is very "meta"... a kind of laughing at the mudane. While Dangerfield was about severe self-ridicule and outrageousness, Steve Martin and Letterman were about making fun of comedy and show business. Seinfield's humor was about observing and exaggerating the mundane. I suspect this reflection on the mundane is an extention of what Jerry's parents found to be the focus in their lives, which Jerry found both irritating and amusing as it tragically was to elevate things which were trivial as the center of their attention essentially missing the opportunity to make more meaningful their relationship with Jerry himself. This humor turned out to be enormously successful, which was rewarding for Jerry both financially and as an acknowledgement to what Jerry considered in the world to have an overblown importance. He made a fortune and was finally able to allow himself an intimate partner and children. After the series closed, Jerry seemed to need to establish his capabilities beyond merely being a fluke by reentering standup and developing an alternate show. But the show is really a showcase of his material success almost competing with Leno as to who has cooler expensive cars or cooler famous friends. He does the same comic Schick in his standup that started his career. But he seems irritated by being driven to continue doing it now. In the beginning of his career, there would have been much more adrenaline as well as some part of every unacknowledged child's wish to finally achieve the acknowledgment of their parents. Maybe now he just does not know what else to do with his life, but is not prepared for doing anything else nor would anything else be as financially rewarding. Much of the time now, when they record him off stage, he seems to be giving out advise to younger comics or seeming to try to be just another Joe. But he does not seem to really think of himself as just another Joe....He's a megawealthy, megastar with nothing to prove, yet perhaps some part of him has yet to feel he was really something special to his parents and there is no getting that acknowledgment now. (Of course this is conjecture based on too many RUclips videos of Seinfeld).
@@ghostshipone In my experience, I'm only bothered when I somehow needed a different outcome. What I'm seeking in this exploration of Seinfield is some clues to the universal in all of us. Used to really be happy anytime Seinfeld was on Carson. Still remember some of the jokes, and I do remember the cotton ball routine. When the series came on I was very hopeful but it wasn't very good. It took a little while then became a big fan of the show and even now, I'll stop scrolling or as Jerry would say "women want to see what's on, men want to see what else is on", whenever I see "Seinfeld" on the list. I've watched the last 3 minutes of an episode many times. I may have a problem... ;)

Feels like he’s buying his way back into the business. Really funny dude but it’s looking like he won’t age gracefully but instead will go out saying “remember Seinfeld? That was me. I’m amazing.” His new show is funny but in the 2nd season, he often talked over guests and interrupted them to tell his jokes, give advice, or tell an antidote about his career. Nothing against the guy but he’s been poking around for the last 5 years trying to rekindle something and it’s kind of off putting for me.
I loved the show, but I've never found Jerry funny as a stand-up comedian. I don't know why. Maybe it really is like he says, and it's all the presentation and not the joke itself.
Every time he says “George”, I instantly think of the show.
The fact that he’s worth $950,000,000 is mind boggling
He’s rich and can laugh he’s the dream come true
I respect Jerry's seemingly grounded and pragmatic outlook.
Did he save the Ovaltine joke? That one was gold!
