So I don't know if you've come across this in your travels, since it only really came to light for us (British Army) a few months back, but there has been a lot of Swivel Housings introduced into the parts supply chain that have failed like this, our entire fleet of Defenders were taken off of the road and every one checked to see if they had the bad parts installed. If you have a good Swivel Housing, you should see a dark line going around near to wear yours failed. If there is no signs of a line, you've got the bad part. We had exceptional experience in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan from the locals fixing things after spending most of the year traveling around the mountains and desert. Such amazing people
Maybe this is failed because of the accident damage? I know the impact was on the other side but looking at the video the Land Rover was pushed sideways, that will put a lot of force on the swivel... I’ve had my own defender for 18 years with oversize tyres and a bloody great big heavy duty PTO driven winch and all is still fine...swivels housing don’t just fail unless they’ve received a serious impact! Glad you guys are okay..but you know this problem is common on Defenders, that's why in my country "Yemen" we stopped using them..we mostly use Toyota LC's or Nissan Patrol's..don't get me wrong,i still Love Defenders.. Great video.. Cheers from Yemen
There is a recall on the 2.2 l Pumas for this problem, the recall does not fix the fault it just adds a bracket to stop the front axle from dropping to the ground. Illegal to run spacers on your rims here in oz just run bigger rims with the correct offset and suspension lift. I have a 2013 HCPU 130.
Big tyres and rim spacers might speed the failure up but there is a factory recall on this issue. Trouble is the recall does not fix the problem it just adds a bracket to stop the front axle from hitting the ground after it breaks.
I haven't seen the video fully but this can be common on older live axle vehicles. Toyota's do it, the 4 bolts at the bottom of the front hub birfield joint loosen from leaking grease seals in the hub and will give out. Check them, clean them spotless dry with brake cleaner and oven cleaner and locktite them back in. Don't trust mechanics to spot it, 4wds need much more closer attention than most people in garages even know to look for. This coming from experience and numerous Lamdcruisers that each did over 500,000ks
Wow! Just stumbled across y’alls channel. So sorry to see the damage! We are huge believers that everything happens for a reason (and we only say it when something bad happens 😄) it could always have been worse. You guys have a great attitude! Can’t wait to catch up with your videos.
We drove 4,500 miles from north California with 82 long bed 4x4 toyota hilux and no problems , by the way when i got in mexico the road was full of road holes. Straight axles are #1 . It never left me on side road.
I've seen guys offroading with Defenders on 35" tires doing all sorts of crazy stuff, never seen a swivel break like that! What make was it? please don't say Britpart :-D Is there a part II? Good luck on your amazing adventures :-)
My father was a track driver in Siberia 30 years ago and he told me once if you breakdown in the winter on the way you will freeze to death because there way no traffic for weeks on the road. Temperature dropped below -50 during the night so I believe that this was extem overland in the past, nowadays it's all fun trips with a bit excitement when you breakdown on the way.
lucky???? you could have nothing ,just getting by day to day pay check to pay check. you both are right ,you need to toughen up and laugh at such a simple little problem. fix it get back on the road be extremely grateful to do what others only dream of doing and be happy.
@Jay & Alfie Indeed...! Trusting a Land Rover is insane to start with... So you might be right, they will face many more mechanical problems before that weld gives up...
I guess, there is no way to get the right part in that place of the globe. The closest site where you at least can try to search for some is capital of that country, and even then with no guaranteed results at all. Thus the welded part is going in to serve well for few mighty thousands of kilometers...
I think they should have but then they can not enjoy that 2.5 tons of sleeper (which tells clearly that they are not pro campers or expert off roaders but again can not blame them since they are on honeymoon and newbie ) ! Since Toyota can not be modified in to that and not to carry around these kind of weight ! They did not at all or just poorly calculated the load that they will be carrying and have to strengthen the leaf springs according to the load and axles plus change the coil springs for tough load ! Btw ! They are almost reaching 5 tons and no Toyota even their pickups are limited to 3.5 tons because of the rims and width of tires they offer with them !
Hi, I've only just come across you, nice setup you've got there. I recently repaired a Defender that did something similar, it sheared the flange off the axle casing, glad yours didn't. Aparrently there was a batch of casings that weren't welded right, might be worth checking yours. Look round the welds between the axle casing and the flange for the swivel ball. First sign is a leak if it's cracking. Don't want to see you stuck again.
Wow, impressed. Found ya right now. Impressed how relaxed you stayed. My bro has a Landi as well, broke down at the beginning of our last trip. 2 weeks of holydays ruined. My personal choise is Nissan, never let me down...but of course doesn't have that cult status.
i was looking at the failure a good welder could probably weld it back together for a temporary repair. anyway just my 10 cents sorry about negative comments about your vehicle this could happen to any truck best of luck
There isn't a single recorded occasion of this happening to a Landcruiser. It was a LR, garbage vehicles made by idiots in the West Midlands. Look what they did to Leyland, Rover, Austin ect ect. Wake up and smell the LC.
Every time I go overlanding I carry a spare housing and when I get back I wonder whether I should have bothered. Thank you for the video, looks like next time I will be packing it again.....

Loving the positive vibs!!! Kudo to you both and the old man too!
Glad you guys are okay..but you know this problem is common on Defenders, that's why in my country "Yemen" we stopped using them..we mostly use Toyota LC's or Nissan Patrol's..don't get me wrong,i still Love Defenders..
Great video..
Cheers from Yemen
Wesam Mansour snapping swivel balls is not common on any Land Rover in any country
Luck there was a Toyota around to sort you out 🤙
That was a Mercedes? 12:41
..that was a good man who decided to help at the time..get some life, instead of talking trash..
So ironic haha

@Jett Jo johnson Maybe in USA, but few people buy American outside of America for a good reason...
Great Experience for you i can see the emotions with autohome guys are awesome keep trailing happy for you.. :)
Welcome on the channel :) Steph has tattooed on her back " everything happens for a reason"
What's your Gvm? You maybe over weight and adding too much stress too your vehicles components.
you guys are gold, real real real real LEGENDS!!!!!
Horrible to see your pride and joy creaking and groaning like that but it can take it, it’s a Land Rover. Greetings from Solihull!
We drove 4,500 miles from north California with 82 long bed 4x4 toyota hilux and no problems , by the way when i got in mexico the road was full of road holes. Straight axles are #1 . It never left me on side road.
People: "I'm going travelling in a Land Rover"
Narrator: "They weren't"
Very lucky to have such a healthy mindset! You guys rock 😀💙🔝💪
I've seen guys offroading with Defenders on 35" tires doing all sorts of crazy stuff, never seen a swivel break like that! What make was it? please don't say Britpart :-D
Is there a part II? Good luck on your amazing adventures :-)
Exactly what im wondering.
Could be ****part, I saw a few stickers in Newman's store that did the work, but I think Britpart don't make swivel joints do they?
Watch Ryder Yes they do :-) Even teflon coated ones!
@@ButchE30M3S14 Oh dear. I wouldn't want a critical part on my lannie that was BritPart.
Watch Ryder Exactly! Only the less critical stuff can be britpart lol
I have never seen a landy swivel housing fail like that before
I met a lot of nice people breaking down and fixing my bike with them I still keep in touch with a guy from Australia. . Good times
8 feet of snow...vehicle covered in icicles..."Good thing this didn't happen in winter".
Know that feeling, you guys did the best out of it.... Unbelievable!
Wish you all the best, stay safe.
lucky???? you could have nothing ,just getting by day to day pay check to pay check. you both are right ,you need to toughen up and laugh at such a simple little problem. fix it get back on the road be extremely grateful to do what others only dream of doing and be happy.
Splendid! now i can learn french while I enjoy good television
I wouldn't trust my life on that welding repair...but anyway kudos to the old mechanic..!
God bless you guys the best video.
you should have used a toyota landcruiser.
@@mattprior8442 you probably need to look at lc70 series with diesel engine
Hi, I've only just come across you, nice setup you've got there. I recently repaired a Defender that did something similar, it sheared the flange off the axle casing, glad yours didn't. Aparrently there was a batch of casings that weren't welded right, might be worth checking yours. Look round the welds between the axle casing and the flange for the swivel ball. First sign is a leak if it's cracking. Don't want to see you stuck again.
Time to switch to a Toyota?! What size tires are those, 35s?
They also have some axle housing failure issues unfortunately
No more than 33"...but those axles are prone to failure with oversize tires...
You both are enjoying the mishaps of life and I assure you you are lucky to be having those mishaps
Enjoy life like you are enjoying I'm jealous

Thank you for the video, looks like next time I will be packing it again.....
i dont bother cause i have a toyota hahaha
How the hell did you manage to do that on paved road? Are Land Rovers that unreliable? Holy crap man...
Poor Bear - hate to watch these scenes as it is so much more than a car. But, you learn, you continue on and you can hopefully look back with a laugh. Always makes a good story and you meet the best people you might otherwise have missed. Good luck!
Owned a landrover all I did was put money into it, I now have a 4dr Rubicon much better.
That didn't seem like a bad pothole I drive over worse in a car and never had damaged. Love how positive you guys are being.
Damn Land Rovers. I've never spent more time on the side of the road, in a parking lot or, in my own damn driveway, than when I owned a Rover.
I've noticed they won't reply to people giving advice to scrap the LR and go LC.
Well I’ve had 9 over the years my break downs were my own fault off roading pushing to hard .apart from that maintain them well they will last a lifetime.
buy a cruiser and just change the oil every now and then and itl last a lifetime. no special bumblefuckery required.
