- We got a call for an Earthroamer that had slid off the road at Cathedral Mountain Overlook in Capitol Reef State Park. They said a local tow company had turned down helping them so we loaded up both wreckers and headed out. Once we got on-site we had to assess the situation on how to rig everything using what we brought and what was available in the area. Everyone assumes that just cuz a tree is nearby you can winch to it. Sometimes that is true but in the desert where the roots don't go deep it isn't always that easy. We did make some mistakes in this recovery but we dealt with them as they came. We were able to get them out of a bad situation and back on their way. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

So after being contacted directly by Earthroamer (super nice people by the way) we have been corrected on weight. This vehicle full of fuel weighs 18,000 lbs. I apologize, it was not my intent to mislead anyone for clicks, I just went with what the customer had told me. Thank you everyone.
Good point, it might leave Earthroamers fully equipped with extras with that kind of weight, but then people add more batteries, more solar, heavy utilities and a few more canisters and its probably closer to what the customer stated….
@@0kn0wwhat That's 5000lbs of party supplies! For the average good size truck camper, one usually ballparks a thousand lbs when fully packed, ready to go. I could maybe see a rig like that loading up 2000lbs and change, if he's got some big-ass fresh tanks, a motor bike and a hell of a big meat freezer and beer fridge. But 5k lbs seems a bit much. Regardless, heck of a rig. Perhaps toss in a couple hundred lbs of brown weight in his shorts hanging off the road like that! LOL!!!!!
Perhaps you guys should start handing out a fresh pair of undershorts on jobs like that!! Much more appropriate than a t-shirt..... In stead of "What size shirt do you wear?" You can ask, "Boxers or Briefs ????" 🤣🤣🤣
that is plenty heavy.....I have a f550 that weighs 14....and it is a beast.
plus camping gear!!!! and was there a woman in there they have lots of stuff that they haul.
You know it's going to be fun when the laughter starts before the actual recovery.
THAT'S something you don't see everyday. Well done guys.
Great job guys !!
Does anyone else think the slow-mo mistake was a happy accident? This was an incredibly challenging recovery and having Rory do narration on top of the video was a really valuable bonus. I have learned so much from you guys. Thanks again for some of the best content on YT.
While I love the banter between the guys while working, I dig the voice over to drive home some details that were not called out while on the job.
Kudos to their editor for fixing that happy mistake, we wouldn't have known had Rory not mentioned it.
that guy cant drive. Never was in the army. Thats a plus- to learn in the army to drive or not to drive. or where not to drive.
Just before the winch line broke I was thinking “if this was on network tv there would be dramatic music and kettle drums playing as they broke for commercial for ten minutes. Then when the show started again they would recap all that had happened since the last commercial. Then the narrator would try to build up the drama. “ so then the line snaps but we didn’t need any fake drama or commercials this was for real. I appreciate the way you showed this recovery. So much more enjoyable than fake drama of network tv.
They would also tell them to cuss every two seconds so there would be constant beeping through the whole show. Haha
💯😂
Rory saved a million dollar camper. Hats off! Thanks for the safety tips.
Ever see inside of one of those?
Thats not a 'milloin dollar camper'. That's a camper based on an ordinary truck built with ordinary materials and workmanship being sold for one million dollars. There is good reason these are not sold in any significant numbers outside of the USA. There are far superior constructed campers based on modern, efficient and globally sold vehicle platforms out there for the rest of the world . . .
@TRPGpilot... You said all that to say what.!? It still cost a million dollars.
Probably the most genuine hug I have seen in a long while. Good job men.
Was an overhead crane operator for many years. Props for slowing down, actually reading the WLL for your rigging/considering the application i.e. choker, basket, etc. You had a learning experience with the winch line that you will apply to your next technical recovery. Learning and improving are things you should never apologize for. I learn from watching your channel-thank you.
Work smarter not harder.
That hug from the customer was touching. Y’all let Rory do Rory. And that nonchalant slight dig at Matt and Paul made me giggle. That’s how you know they’re good friends
What dig at Matt and Paul?
@@Aragorn450 believe at some point have seen everyone of them use kinetic ropes when when winching, Matt and Paul out on the lake bed when needed the reach,,,for one example,,, so pretty sure we are in fact hearing from "the voice of experience" speaking
He said the customer called everyone in Utah and nobody could do it and then he giggled
@@-Colt Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. Yes indeed, he did at that. Also includes Diesel Bros too. 😉
Plus, if Paul or Matt would have done it, they'd have just called Rory to help anyway!
@@edzimdahl1158 link one clip of any of them winching with kinetic rope
Rory in my opinion the guy made the right choice to call you. you guys are the best for a reason. You guys are good at being able to adapt to get the job done.
Rory is amazing!! bet he could pull a boxcar out of a ditch with his Trailmater!!
@@rearspeaker6364 He pulled a conex box up a mountain with a switch back and placed it on a concrete pad once. That was impressive as well.
@@splatterize My point exactly!! seen that video too!
@@splatterize i remember that. That was a awesome but tense video. But I was so impressed with his calm, confident way of doing it.
Honestly, I think he is the most skilled and safest driver I have ever seen. And at my age I have seen a lot.
I don't think he had any other choices. lol
😮 WOW!
Just WOW!
I don't think a lot of people realize how much experience you have and the time it takes to rig properly without creating damage you guys do a great job and you And your team deserve great credit thank you for your video
A testament to your skills. When things go south, the system is in place to keep it from a catastrophic failure. Very well done, guys.
Man, that is one lucky dude. First off, he is lucky enough to afford that rig. Secondly, I don't know what stopped that from going over. That for sure would have been a total right off. However, he gets to carry on with day like nothing happened. You guys are great.
Oh I'm sure he ruined his shorts, and shed a few years off his life from the stress...
I know your voice over comments were done in post but your step by step of what happened when and how was perfect! It made being along on this recovery extra special. Normally we see just what happens but getting what’s going on in your thought process and execution, good and bad, made a complete story. Thanks to you and the team for putting so much into this recovery. Loved the guided tour on the way in. Thank-you.
Having a winch line snap like that can be so dangerous. You had redundant rigging and used static, not dynamic straps so no huge amount of stored energy released when it snapped. It is easy to second guess someone when not there. Unexpected things happen, your experience and real world knowledge saved that rescue. Nice job!
Man, how luckiest this customer is to give rory's team a call. Excellent job, guys 👌
Those folk were inches from going over - they were really lucky. Well done guys! - particularly how you handled the emergency of the line breaking.
They really were inches PAST going over but somehow didn't!
They weren't lucky, God protected them.
God bless you all!
@@michaelboyle1983 Amen to that.
Weight protected them.
@@michaelboyle1983 that would be like tripping someone and catching them before they hit the ground, saving them.. :):)
Thank you Rory, Shawn, Mike, That had a pucker factor of 12.5 at least. And you all just walked through it like the pros that you are. I also really appreciate the tour guide work as you go through the beautiful country out there. You guys have a hell of an office to work in. Thank you, Give Lilli a hug and tell her we miss her, God Bless you all.
The scenery on the way to recoveries never gets old. I appreciate where I live everyday but different is always more fascinating.
I’ve seen the prices on those Earth Roamers. Ouch! No wonder no one wanted to touch it. Rory, you are a true magician at your trade and you and the crew are a well oiled machine. Congratulations on an epic recovery.
That was one sketchy recovery. Rory you and your team are awesome!
Great Job you guys
One pleased customer, lucky he didn’t loose it all down the bank.
alot of respect for this man being willing to show a recovery where something went wrong. you can trust this is someone who learns from there experiences.
Good job men. Good to see how much foresight you put into safely get the job done.
Great rigging job. Lots of potential problems but you got through it ok. As a retired tugboat captain, my experience with rigging is extensive and when I see such a well thought out approach to solving a big problem, I have to send my commendation.
This was a brilliant recovery. Nothing rushed, you oversaw the situation, made a plan and it worked out.
Great to see the customer being so relieved that he hugged Rory.
Well done guys!
Great editing Justin! I’m glad that we got to enjoy such a unique recovery!
@Toasty my cousin. He’s been in a few of the videos but he works remotely and edits.
Props to the driver for having the guts to get into the truck, a lot of people would not have done that, even with the winch lines hooked up.
Naw just you..boi
Captain goes down with his ship, gotta save your baby… shame
That's a million dollars he doesn’t want to see go downhill.😂
@@KA-om9ozwhats a boi? I know a gay guy who types that
If you don't get back into your own truck, you shouldn't be out there in the first place.
That was almost to much to watch when that line broke !!! Even I jumped..
Great job, I don't know what else to say... AMAZING JOB 👍👍👍👍
I think you did a fantastic job
Nobody hurt and no vehicle destroyed 👍👍👍
I would've shoveled out the soil in front of the left rear tyres so that less initial stress is used to begin to pull it out.
Aside from the frayed winch line that snapped, I guess the (other) back-up lines did their jobs.
AWESOME RECOVERY !
🤓😄
That was one happy gentleman that owned that rig when it was on all 4's ! Good job Rory and crew !
So glad Justin was able to salvage the footage. Not a recovery I would want to miss. Thankfully thru expert rigging and redundancy the customer got to drive their very expensive RV home and everyone got to go home safely. Not one you will ever forget.
The guy that noticed the frayed winch rope should have asked for a safety break to have the boss check the rope. Nobody ever gets questioned or looked at sideways over safety.
It's always nice to see operators use multiple rigging points and know how to luff their block and tackle to gain pulling power.
Well done 🤝🤝👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Proof you can never have too much equipment and know what it can do. Was there a weak link yes. But there were other areas that added the protection in case of failure. It looked like it was a well thought out plan and executed successfully. It was nice seeing Rory get a hug from a customer. Well deserved I might add. The whole team is a well oiled machine and the best in the biz. Nicely done Gentlemen. You all always bring it and make the others look like they are playing with Fisher-Price toys in their sand box.
Before I got into off-roading I used to think these Earthroamers were the coolest thing. Now I know that beast has to cause constant stress and is very limiting. Frankly you dont need to take the entire house with you everywhere. You can live quite comfortably in something like a pop up camper in the bed of a truck.
Unnecessary overkill, agreed.
It’s what rich dudes get sothat the women will go with him. They need shower, bathroom and all the rest. Not my lady.
I disagree there not tight trail or rock crawlers but aside from being overpriced by 700-800k there pretty cool bit of engineering
@@Doubie. The weight of this thing literally destroyed that shelf road. That's hardly rock crawling or tight trails. This thing will be stress inducing on anything more difficult than a slightly rough dirt road.
Great video, always enjoy the ride along, TrailMater never shows fear, anything is possible, no worries, no panic,it's a cakewalk
It takes a great amount of class and experience, and wanting to spread the knowledge, to be willing to point out your mistakes on a job some others might just call a win and move on.
That was incredible, Rory !
W O W. That could have been a hell of a 1 way ride. You did goooood. All of you .
I love the fact you use gear no matter the brand. Good is good and honesty is the best.
That was impressive! The narration really explained the thought process for making the recovery a success! You guys did a great job and the customer should be real happy!
Technical rescue! 😮 I appreciate how you made this video adding the narration to walk viewers through your thought process. I get a lot from that thanks. You guys are bad ass
I really like Mike’s commentary, how he points out things on the terrain.
Three guys with balls and about $30, 000.00 worth of cobbled together equipment between the two wreckers save a $ 800, 000.00 luxury earth roamer. This is what makes this country great! ingenuity and basic engineering. Great Content!!!
I bet they wish those trucks only cost $30k to build lol, I would guess at least 3x that but still far less than an Earth Roamer.
That was amazing, the narrating super cool. The hug added a certain touch Rory. That rig is gorgeous. I'm glad everyone is ok. The dynamic duo (Trail Mater, Ole Blue) does it again!!! Awesome job Justin.
Yeah but Matt using a Yankum via winch in a mud pit with crazy deep [mire?] suction seems amazingly niche and appropriate. I can see how it's a 'dont try this at home' thing though under the circumstances you've seen..
6:13 you would not believe how many people dont understand snatch blocks. Snatch blocks to give a DOUBLE weight reduction in line pull MUST move with the load. Thank you so much, Mater for showing that reality for everyone.
That's the simplest explanation I've seen, and the one I'll actually remember.
Yup. Otherwise all it does is change the direction of pull. Which is a perfectly valid use case, if you have to go around obstructions for example.
@@MrJest2 Yes, yet so many are incorrect when they claim it "Doubles" the line pull. Even those you would expect not to make that error.
Thanks for the instruction, and talking us through what you were doing. Some place some or time that will come in handy for one of us.
I really like the way you explain what you are doing and why and stress safety keeping in mind the limitations of the equipment! I was originally trained as an engineer so learned a lot about bridges, stress, and strength of materials and have applied that to the recovery equipment I have. Really important to know when you're stressing a line to it's limit and have a backup plan in case something fails. Thanks for sharing and educating!
Damn Rory.... you are the epitome of the consummate professional. Based on this, you should charge more. The equipment, the rigging, the direction you are giving everyone involved - freakin baaaaad aaass!!! The hug was icing on the cake.
I just read 349 comments. There isn’t much I can add. Great job team trailmater. Amazing that the comments only contained a few suggestions and I didn’t see any negative comments, that’s a testament to how impressive we all think you guys are. Thanks for the scenery the lesson and for being so down to earth.
350 / 351.. my comments..
You guys give us some amazing video footage…love the scenery, beautiful yet rugged territory! Thanks Rory, Mike and Shawn!
This has to be be one of the your best recovery videos following the sky hook vid. Some really good rigging as well as reassuring the customer when the line broke. The one thing I have seen in your videos is that things break. The extra measures you took before the pull as a redundancy proves that you can't overdo the safety aspect. Some really nice scenery that you haven't shown before. Really good job by the whole team, as well as Justin for his editing skills. Thanks for sharing.
That was truly a great video. I loved the way you described what you were doing and why you were doing it. There is a ton of great information and I really learned a lot just from this one video. I would like to see more video's where you break down how and why you rig everything up. I get that it wouldn't be a regular thing but on these complicated rescues it is really great to see.
As someone who likes knowing technical type stuff. This is one of your coolest videos.
Incredible recovery with a nail biter!!! Awesome work Rory
Such a good video! Your so authentic, all of you! I would trust you with any of my recoveries! You guys rock!! 👍👍💯
You guys are real pros! I seen these pictures a couple of weeks ago and was eagerly anticipating the video drop. It’s great to see how calm you guys were with a 18k lb truck dangling over a cliff. One of my favorite parts about you guys is the fact that you own your mistakes or things you could have done better or done differently instead of either ignoring what you did or didn’t do or making excuses. Very honorable Sir. Great channel thank you for the free education keep it up and stay safe! I am sure we will be recommending you to our customers that visit your neck of the woods.
Excellent explanation and recovery of that monster sized camper rig . Pucker factor had to have been +20,000
That is the most impressive recovery I have seen. Kudos.
SAFETY SAFETY and SAFETY WELL DONE!!! Your work requires that you can think outside the Box, and you and your crew do that well. Thank you Stay Safe.
That was an awesome recovery to watch! Good thing you guys were the ones doing the recovery.
Rory/Team Trailmater, if the BMF title were a thing in off-road recovery as it is in the UFC, I am quite confident that you would be the reigning/undisputed/undefeated champion without a doubt. That was quite an impressive recovery, I'd put it in the top 5 sketchiest category, that ya'll were able to accomplish out there. I love how technical you are and even though self admittedly you make mistakes at times, it seems there is always different techniques and such that you find to get to the end goal....a safe recovery, everybody goes home how they showed up at the beginning of the day, and no damage to clients rigs!
I have no words! Think most all have already said it...... W O W
You guys rock! And will throw a shout out to the customer as well. He was pretty quick on those brakes when that line snapped. Also enjoyed that hug from him....don't and won't see that very often.
Shout out to the editor, if all that was recorded in slow motion, did a fantastic job getting it up to speed to watch and also really appreciate your commentary over the video explaining what is happeing!!!
Amazing job to Rory and the crew. What a precarious situation that fellow was in. You really know your stuff, Rory. Take care and I will see you all again.
love how honest, self-aware, and open y'all are. Great job recovering that earthroamer!
Awesome recovery...possibly your happiest customer yet...nicely done team...you da man as always Rory !
that was a half million $ hug for sure.
You showed true professionalism start to finish. That was in no means an easy recovery but you made it look so. Great job to the whole TM crew !
Thank you for sharing, it's exciting to watch these recoveries unfold
Amazing Recovery Rory Shawn and Mike. Hellva job with what you had to work with. This is why you are the king of offroad recovery. Congratulations. I am sure that customer's hug was heartfelt, especially after the winch line let go.
HEY! Hello Rory , Mike and Shawn . Thumbs UP!!
Great recovery. Key here was planning, double protection, TEAM WORK. Good job.
That was an awesome video. Love the way that you explained the process and walked everyone through the safety aspects
Excellent - you guys and your "after action review" of what you could have done differently/better is what keeps you alive! Stay safe and thanks!
Thank God, you guys saved my Saturday night and my Sunday morning in church,
Bless your savior little hearts
✌️🙏
And it looks like you really saved this guy's bacon too, way to go
That was nerve wracking but you all got it done in a quick, methodical, and very professional way. Rory, your jump to calm the customer warmed my heart. Well done young man! 🙏❤️🤗
It was good to see Rory and the team handle this recovery. The wrong recovery team may have tried hot dogging it and been hurt or lost the heavy truck the way things went. Rory's experience and instinct with the backing of the team really paid off on this recovery. Top Job guys. Excellent video. One of the best yet in mho. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
So Wise , Thank you . Another fine recovery , showing the importance of Knowing what works and does not .
What a remarkable recovery. That was so near a disaster. You've a great mind!
Amazing sharp video, you are going from strength to strength. A very impressive rescue, well done.
Always love Mike making sure to capture the beauty of your "office". Great recovery in a dicey situation. Keep up the great work. You guys are a pleasure to watch!
You guys are absolute Legends 👍 A job well done
And Justin is a Hero for saving the videos 💪
An absolutely outstanding safe recovery! HIP HIP HURRAY! HIP HIP HURRAY!! HIP HIP HURRAY!!! how I wish this would’ve been at least a 20 or, 30 minute video!!
Gave me goosebumps. Great job. You can have all the best equipment in the world but it has to be used right. Glad you guys are on the job.
"You can either buy experience or you can earn it", as the saying goes.
Hiring Rory and Company was the right choice this time. -- Thanks for the scary upload. ---
Very Professional, and thank you for the explanation that we can all learn from - a true professional.
Man, AWESOME JOB GUYS!!! I don’t know how that truck stayed on the hillside! Really liked the voiceover, I know you did it for other reasons but I think it added a lot to the video and understanding just how tough and dangerous it really was!!! That’s Why you guys do the jobs everyone else turned down!!!
Incredible recovery. Nice work. I hope I never need it, but if I do, I’m calling u guys. Love the content.
Once again team trailmater, you show who's the boss, beautiful recovery!! Thank you for taking the time teaching us really good rigging tips.
Mad respect to the trail mater team! That was one for the books for sure, y’all handled it mighty professionally.
I keep watching episodes and saving them to watch later with other people I want to impress with the beauty of the terrain and the insanity of the recoveries being done - my list of must-watch clips is getting unwieldy! This one was just NUTS...
Another great recovery! Working in a machine shop, rigging heavy stuff, I like to use old firehose for softeners on my slings. A 2 or 3 foot piece might have saved that guys sling on his beast
Hey Rory /// Shawn & Mike !!! Great recovery with SHOWING that everyday & issue is a learning experience that WON"T be forgotten !!! 🤔🙄😏 Thanks for videoing & explaining what exactly was going on the recovery till the end !!!! 🙃😃🤠😎👀👀👀👍👍👍👍👍
Rory, I give you high praise for accepting that job. And I give you a very high congratulation for being successful. On a much lesser scale, I have found that a lot of impossible situations are possible, But you'll never know unless someone makes the effort. You made that effort! You deserve all the praise you can stand. As an observer I would not be afraid to recommend you and your team for any recovery call. Best wishes for you and your team.
Great recovery and good use of the equipment used. Showing the line breaking and the straps just basically falling was great. Great videoing all around.
I would have expected heavy D to show up on this recovery instead you guys use two trucks, winches, geometry, physics and get it done with minimal effort and make it look routine. That’s unbelievable and quite impressive. You guys never fail to amaze us viewers with finesse and beautiful scenery.
12,000 lbs. Not 24,000 lbs.
Awesome, AWESOME job Rory/Mike/Shawn!! Working Load Limits and proper rigging is something that is severely lacking in the offroad industry IMO. Great to hear you guys talk about it.
Rory, you and your team really are the Jedi masters of your trade. You analyse before doing anything and you never seem to loose your cool. Fantastic job as usual.
