    Welcome to Fix My 3d Model Episode 3!
    The 3d modeling series where you send your 3d model and I fix it. In this Maya Modeling Tutorial, I go thru the process of creating a clean 3d model with many cylindrical insets that lie on a curved surface. I will go show you how to avoid common 3d modeling mistakes to create clean topology that subdivides well and is free of any pinching.
    I will show you my Hard Surface Modeling workflow that involves breaking down each part of an asset into modular pieces. This will speed up your hard surface modeling and also ensure perfect uniformity.

    I love your techniques and workflow in Maya, I’ve learnt a lot of what you shown in the past years. But I’ve also discover some new ones thanks to you. I’m sure you know this but you could save two steps when you translate the merged vertices when you extrude the top edge. You select the merged pívot, change to scale tool, press d+v to reposition the pívot to the side further vertex and scale top. Instead what I do is just select that same merged vertex as you do but simply with the move tool, press V while I’m translating the object just on the x axis and hovering which the mouse to also the same vertex that you select to scale it down, same result, less shortcuts. Great job as always, pleasure to watch you.

    Love the video... However at 10:48 you did not have to remodel that button. If you duplicated it one more time and deleted the top parts of the faces. You would have been able to extrude those edges as well and then follow the process to bridge the edges. I use blender and the best part is that this technique can be applied to any 3d application when it comes to molding.

    • @jlmussi

    instead of selecting edge perimeter then bevel, you can keep faces selected and do bevel faces.
    also, at situations like 24:34,
    selecting such edges that don't form a loop can be troublesome (imagine the capsule gap to be long and forgetting selecting the bottom edges, beveling the rest then realising that late).
    better way is to select the face loop between outside and inside edges - convert to edge perimeter - deselect the edge loop above (which is just double click, unlike selecting the inside edges).

    Lastly, is a holding edge to ensure the shape stays when you go into smooth mode? Do you just have to bevel each side of the edge?

    • @zBrush01
      @zBrush01 4 года назад +1

      Yes, since the smoothing-operation is going edge to edge, the closer the supporting/holding edge is the smaller the smoothing will turn out. You also could just use a holding edge on one side, then you would have one harder and one smoother edge-smoothing. Hope my explanations makes sense to you.
      If you need more information about the smoothing Maya uses: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catmull-Clark_subdivision_surface

  • @tomyoungblood9175

    When you do to edge > to edge perimeter > bevel, what keybinds are you pressing to adjust the bevel without inputting values? (19:18)

    • @zBrush01
      @zBrush01 4 года назад

      That should work with dragging the middle mouse button. If you like to change after the command promt is gone, you can select the object and find the history inside the channel box. There you can select the bevel and change it afterwards. Select what you'd like to change and drag the middle mouse to adjust.

    Is there any alternative solution to circularize the points on surface at 6:00? Cinema 4d doesn't have a tool like Maya's circularize tool. It has a free script but it only works on flat surfaces.

    • @jlmussi
      @jlmussi  4 года назад

      Yes, if C4D supports booleans, you could do something like this: ruclips.net/video/aQn2f1Z3Tp4/видео.html

    • @zBrush01
      @zBrush01 4 года назад

      Place a cylinder like he did in the video, then cut the circle by hand, extrude edge offset and then move inner circle vertices by edge constraint to where you need them. Have no clue about modelling in C4D, but this should be possible with any decent 3d modeling tool, I guess.

      Congrats! That's a nature of the beast with studios, they primarily hire on demand. I would just relax, breath in and enjoy the moment and the achievement. Many don't land a job right after college. Just be proactive, keep creating and updating that portfolio. But I think you will be fine, if its a reputable studio, I doubt they would turn around and let you go right after hiring. Remember, its work on the studios part to hire somebody as well. Hope that helps.
