Richard Harrow was about the most complex character I've seen portrayed in a series, particularly given he was a secondary character. He truly took over the show...
That attention to detail when he tilts his head back so he can swallow his drink. Because he can't create the pressure to swallow normally because he cant close his mouth due to his injury, so eating and drinking are probably something that pains him greatly, physical and mental. Fucking impeccable show 👌
One of the most beautifully shot suicide (attempt) scenes. A man who is a shadow of his former self taking in the simple pleasures of what it is to be alive in nature before he has to deal with the reality of existence.
That mask was his dignity. He couldn't have his dignity stolen before leaving the world. Plus I think Harold figured that dog was an omen. Like "if I follow this dog perhaps there's an answer to a question I didn't figure to ask".

Also, as someone who has gotten to that point before, it's little things like that that'll take you out of the moment-a helicopter flying overhead, a fly buzzing around in your face-little things that take you out of this state of mind you're locked into that help you snap out of what you're about to do
Richard Harrow is a great mix of badassery, misery, compassion and humanity. He's a great person who wouldn't hurt a fly, but if you mess with him, his family or friends, he will show you a savage merciless, side. Big thumbs up on the mass execution, followed by rescuing Tommy on the BE finale.
He did in a way. Remember the scene where Angela is drawing him and he said the love he felt for his twin sister - the closest person to him in the world - had vanished? It’s the moment the audience realizes that the horrors of war and the psychological and physical toll they took on him had made his heart go cold. But then meeting a friend like Jimmy, gaining an adopted son like Tommy, and finding a wife like Julia lit up his humanity again. He had a reason to be. A reason to continue. He was loved and could finally love back. So even though he didn’t make it to Wisconsin in the end, he was given the gift of dying as someone with warmth and love in his heart again.
This character's portrayal is sad, believable, and somehow relatable.. The best character in all of television. Tops Heath Ledger's the joker in my opinion. Jack Huston deserves an Oscar as Richard Harrow..Hands down!
I think he saw his mask as a piece of himself and maybe he wanted to die whole; that, or the dog coming up and stealing his mask was the distraction away from his suicidal thoughts that he needed to snap out of his sorrow and self-pity.
About 80% of the scenes he wasn’t in were a slog to get through by season 4. I couldn’t get enough of his character or his storylines. All others bored me in comparison.

I think even in death he wanted the mask by him as it personified the walls and pain in what was left of his mind. That mask IS Richard, as corny as that sounds, and I think he recognized that.
The dog has certainly seen as much mistreatment as Harrow and is equally disfigured by scars. But it is comfortable in its own skin and has no need for a mask. And when Harrow asks for it back it growls at him. You can almost hear it saying, "Get your ass off the floor, Soldier!"
i used to think that before i having my 2 cats. I have epilepsy and they could sense to a startling degree when something was wrong. The first time i was shocked actually. i was scared, being alone and having auras which usually precede a grand mal seizure. he hopped up onto the sofa, snuggled up next to me and with his one paw started to wipe the tears off my face. I can still feel his paw all these years later.
I really appreciate the dude telling him at the end that he knew that he was going to kill himself in the woods, he kinda gave me the creeps and I had a bit of an uneasy feeling but when he said that it solidified that he was a good dude

It's hard sometimes to keep going when you've lost your cause. You fight everyone else's cause because you've lost your own then you drift do stupid things and feel there's no way out..... Bit like Richard really believe your doing the right thing and being used by other people you feel helpless.
I am a regular guy; fairly unemotional and certainly not prone to crying beyond the out of the ordinary life events (not trying to portray myself as some tough guy etc just a normal guy). But when I see Richard, practically any scene he is in, I get this feeling like I want to cry. Just disturbs the crap out of me watching it. I guess that's as fine as acting can be.
Richard and the dog have a cosmic connection... They are both ex soldiers who keep on fighting but now for an unknown cause, more or less because thats all that they know. The dog didnt want to see Richard go out like that so therefore saved him from himself bc the next scene he finds out some history of the dog and has some sort of bizarro epiphany.

The first time I watched it I was like "NO PLEASE NO PLEASE NO PLEASE", since y'know, favorite character and all. I can seriously relate. I wish I knew someone like this in real life, he'd probably have a lot to say and a lot of life lessons to teach.
When he sees the phesant I thought about how he is the would be hunter, and killer. He saw a creature that any hunter would have roasted the creature with poratoes for dinner. Richard saw a living creature doing bird things on a fall afternoon. In times like this, when the soul is being searched, a bird is just a bird.
I've felt the same way as this guys character for a few years now, I've almost considered getting a gun to off myself, but if you live in Australia by the time you can register for a licence and get a gun you've already spent hundreds of dollars, but I dont think people realise just how much this scene relates to me

when i was watching this episode and i saw that richard was going to commit suicide i was practically crying! he was so despondant that he wanted to end his life! then a beautiful dog saved him! it's funny that he ran after his stolen mask!

I was hoping that he was just there for some peace. To collect his thoughts. For me the woods are the best place for that. Nope he was going to suicide. The dog ran off with his face. If he really wanted to be gone he would have let the dog go. I was hoping that he didn't shoot the dog.
Lolwut, if anyone can see a tree shake then they are in eyesight anyway. The motion of you walking will draw more attention than a tree slightly shaking. And what's it matter? Unless the woods is infested with people there won't be anyone to see it shake anyway. Even if they do so what? Unless you are trespassing they will 99/100 times leave you alone.

Harrow was a wonderful character and unfortunately they fucked it up. Had him kill an innocent who wasn't his target and then he dies alone under the boardwalk. He should've got a happy ending with his love, having reformed her father, and raised Tommy to be a good man..........instead Harrow dies and somehow Tommy turns into just another dummy with a gun who kills Nucky. There's a reason I hate finales, because rarely are shows ever closed out the right way and good or amazing writers just seem to fuck it all up at the end.
I am pissed they killed off Jimmy...RIchard is his right hand man. I hope he takes revenge for him and doesn't lose it. This scene really bothered me. This is sad. Terribly affecting.

Van Alden used to be my favorite character but in Seasons 2 & 3 he was given a bunch of boring and contrived sit-comy storylines with not much to do except for some sporadic moments. Richard Harrow is now my favorite, followed by Chalky.

Watching this now. This scene destroys me. I’ve been there. I still struggle. Richard will always be my favorite character from any show.

I know this was 10 years ago but “wouldn’t hurt a fly”? He was a hit man lol, killing strangers for money.
Not the finale either. Maybe season finale. But Tommy Darmody killed Nucky in the series finale of Boardwalk Empire.

What was the line, "the woods weren't meant for that." Many vets went to that point. I'm glad most holstered their weapon.
