The Press Turn Combat System was originally featured in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne all the way back in 2003. Since then, it has made an appearance in many future games in the SMT Franchise, such as Digital Devil Saga, SMT 4 + Apocalypse, and now Shin Megami Tensei V. In this video, I hope to properly express how fantastic this combat system is and how it managed to generate the best turn based gameplay in an RPG.

The press turn, the extra turn, the once more, all different names, all great systems.

good video. I also really like how punishing the system is, to both the player and the enemy. It synergizes well with the fusion mechanic forcing you to make a good, very deliberately planned party for a boss instead of just grinding. I also like how in SMTIV there is no defense stat. Forces you to rely on resistances and buffs, and also makes battles really fast.

Hey man, the algorithm decided to toss your videos my way and I'm loving your content. Big agree on the press turn system after playing SMTV, my first SMT game outside of Persona.
Any turn based RPG that allows more versatility with how you use your turns as a resource is really refreshing these days

Baton pass and technicals are also a great alternative to it. I hope the next smt game carries over technicals since they make statuses actually useful and remove a dead turn by allowing you to setup a weakness where there wouldn't be one! I can't really imagine how persona 6 could improve on 5's gameplay when it's fully upgraded systems cover all bases and allow you to change up your strategy at any time. Maybe making the harder modes with smt mechanics? (you lose the turns if you hit a weakness or miss the enemy completely). Because hard is ok as a challenge but merciless is piss easy by doubling weakness damage...

don't worry, they already fumbled the bag with P3R. P3Fes had a similar mechanic and P5 and P5R expanded on it. P3R fumbled the bag because Persona fans "aren't here for the dungeon crawling/ combat"

It honestly kind of annoys me that the only games in the series that use press turn are current gen mainline and dds. Like, why don't they use it more! Even outside of smt, it would be amazing!

Huge agree with everything said in this video. Turn-based combat is inherently limiting and Atlus is incredible at making those limits disappear

I personally like the uncertainty that moves like Beast Eye and Dragon Eye bring. Keeps you on your toes. The example you gave of Mot's flagrant abuse of Beast Eye, while amusing, cannalso be frustrating. But Mot's behavior was apparently a programming error, and afaik, he doesn't horribly abuse Beast Eye in the remaster.

    • @TatsuHaven

I think that there are some ways to interact with turn count that are more interesting than Beast/Dragon Eye. They do provide challenge, but in my eyes it’s pretty boring to just add more turns just cuz. I do respect your opinion of course!
And yea, Mot isn’t an issue in the Remaster as far as I’m aware.

When people ask which SMT game is the most beginner friendly, I almost always say Digital Devil Saga because I feel it's the perfect midway point between SMT's press turn combat and a traditional RPG. I actually completely forgot Nocturne doesn't explain the press turn system at all, and expects you to figure it out through trial and error. While that's not entirely a bad thing, given how complex and punishing the system can be, the inclusion of a brief and effective tutorial is all the more reason I will recommend the DDS duology over it.

    • @obi-wankenobi4337
      @obi-wankenobi4337 Месяц назад +1

Highly disagree. Best beginner friendly would be SMT IV. It has the right challenge, demon negotiation, and a narrative that will be easier to follow.
DDS is great but with high enemy rates, no demon negations, and a challenging narrative, I would never recommend that as an entry. I'd recommend it once you're into the series

Chess has an interesting German word called "Zugzwang" (Pressure to make a turn/ Turn Pressure). It would not surprise me if Atlus translated that term to English and made it to Press Turn

what I love doing with Matador is that I bring angel to bait him into using Mazan while Nozuchi drains Force, causing him to loose his turns, the third demon is always someone that has access to either Fog Breath to debuff him, or Sukukaja to buff myself

Also the blue light red light instead of vanilla random encounters or having enemies respawn right into my feet.
I'd rather have random encounters over quickly respawning enemies.

is too bad SMT V story is so.....awful, Gameplay kept me going sure but I have no motivation to replay it.
SMT IV on the other hand was carry by both story and gameplay.
I don't agree with " no grinding" When I want to fuse the demon I need I have to grind in order to be able to fuse the specific demon.
"Use the weak ass demons in the area instead" yeah I notice but that's not enough.
