Megami Tensei is one of the longest-running JRPG franchises out there, and there's no doubt that some other games have been influenced by it, and in this video I look at some of those games. While most of these games aren't exactly clones, these similarities are notable, and I think worth talking about.
If there are any other MegaTen-like games I may have missed, please let me know in the comments.

For those wondering, you do not need to know anything about the fate universe before playing fate extra. It and its sequels kinda exist in its own universe where they has almost no connection with any other works in the franchise. Although there are characters and concepts that are introduced in other fate and/or type moon works. It explains everything you need to know about fairly well.

IMO I do recommend watching the main 3 routes in Fate/Stay Night (DEEN FSN, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel) before playing Extra, specifically if you're choosing Archer as your Servant. Archer is the same one in F/SN and repeatedly references the original animes/visual novel, particularly in highlighting the differences in the characters. In addition, the player can appreciate the returning characters a lot more should they go through the original routes first.

I actually really enjoyed the combat in Fate/Extra. It helps reinforce how important it is to learn as much as you can about your opponent. If you follow the individual arc stories to completion, you get a heads-up about the opponent's moveset, and as such can plan your moves accordingly much easier. It's the difference between getting mercilessly bopped and effortlessly shredding, for the majority of foes. As a result, it puts a lot of emphasis on listening to the story and following it's beats, since sometimes you can completely miss arc progression if you aren't paying attention. It also reflects how, in the series lore, it's extremely important to know who the enemy Servant is, as that knowledge informs you of their capabilities. Fate/Extra Record will likely be more accessible, and hopefully will adapt that theme somehow, but for what it is I actually thought Fate/Extra's combat was really fun.

      @koheikyouji 2 года назад +1

Hmm. Since quite a lot of people are looking to pick up The Lost Child, I'll just go ahead and copy and paste my comment from above in hopes it helps
''I posted in a comment just a moment ago, but if you do get the game, beware of a couple of game breaking bugs
In combat your allies will randomly learn skills and activate them in place of what you told them to. If a demon learns a skill before the actual tutorial for learning skills, the main girl who cant be removed will never lear a skill for the rest of the game.
Basically, make sure she is the first thing to learn a skill by reaching that tutorial. Otherwise, reload.
And the other that I found is if you do the optional 100 floor dungeon.
If you beat floor 80, do not exit the dungeon to go and save like I did. Instead, go up to floor 81, and use the exit on that floor instead. Leaving on floor 80 causes a bug that disables the stairs to floor 81, meaning you can never ever beat that dungeon. I lost a good 60 hours due to this and still havent gone back.
Hope you enjoy the game despite this.''

But the story, characters, and themes of escapism and mental trauma are tackled with precision and heart (The game's creator was an actual psychologist!) And by far the best quality? The music. Each area had its own track tied to each boss that were not only certifiable bangers, but also served representations of each of their characters and their inner struggles. That kind of seamless integration is rare these days. The sequel is on my wishlist and my hopes are high.

Monster Hunter: Stories (the pokemon-like version of the game) uses rock-paper-scissors weakness in it (in addition to elemental weaknesses). But it also has different moves that hit one character, multi, buffs, debuffs.

I played the lost child a few years back and I remember liking it a lot, though I saw where it had some rough edges. I played it on normal difficulty, so take it with a grain of salt, but I thought the game was easy enough, Enoch just kind of blows everything out of the water once he gets some decent skills (watch out for that bug that will make Lua unable to learn skills ever if Enoch learns a skill before the skill tutorial.)
I loved the occult theming throughout the game. Investigating paranormal stuff by talking to citizens and then going to the dungeon and fighting the demons responsible, It was just kinda my jam, you know? I agree with some astral designs being pretty lame, but they do get better as the game proceeds. Also, it takes a really, really long time for you to be able to remove an astral from your party, was it just me? That feature didn't seem to unlock until way late in the game.
I was impressed that the creator of el shaddai ended up having to buy the rights to the game so that he could make the lost child. I guess he just loved the world that he created and wanted to expand it himself. I guess you could say he wanted to give it some TLC. LOL

I'm really not familiar with Fate as a whole, but I think I have an idea why the gameplay of Fate/Extra is made this way and it's to reinforce the idea that you need a very solid planning of your moves. You and your opponent are in a 1v1 duel and are sort of equal in strength, the one who can outmanouver and outsmart another wins, so they tried to emulate the mind games that come from trying to predict what your opponent will do and how you wanna condition them to respond but in a turn based system

So thankfully you mentioned Fate as being similar to SMT. As one who loves both series a lot, especially because of how both approach mythology and historical characters in various ways, this was a really good video.
Fate Extra Record is coming soon, and its ditching the rock-paper-scissor mechanic, and so far it looked way better. So yeah, its gonna be fun. I know Fate and SMT both are mythology based but they are too different. But! I think both SMT and Fate fans could have enjoyment in the other series. Maybe not totally, but both offer different things so while they have a similar theme, its still unique enough.
So yeah, if you like SMT, you might like Fate. If you like Fate, you might like SMT! I certainly love both series!

As a Fate fan who just was there to get the lore and start the series (since CCC, Extella, and Extella Link all follow from Extra), it was pretty fun and it kept me engaged at the very least. I hope I dont get in trouble for spamming, but i'm just giving some advice for people wanting to pick up The Lost Child:

This was a pleasant video probably gonna put some of those into my backlog and regarding fate/extra. Well it really depends on the servant you choose easy mode being Saber, Normal mode being Archer and hard mode being Caster (this is something not everyone would spot on first glance) and about the combat again it not only has to do with the rock paper scissors but also with the skills and stats your servant has. Saber having the most broken skills which make the final boss a literal joke especially with Thrice-setting sun which is arguably one of the best skills in that game. Something I would recommend if you still have any interest is trying the other servants like Caster (if you want it to give any chance) as for the remake I will patiently wait until it's released (I'm also a fate fan which probably made me enjoy the game more).

Hell the main social mechanic of the Ar Tonelico series, The Cosmosphere, is similar to Social Links since its all about getting to know and explore other characters although Ar Tonelico goes deeper in depth since you do it by traveling to worlds inside the persons mind sinilar to Palaces. I would recommend the 2nd if you want the best experience if you ever want to check them out.

Of these games, the one that interests me is The Lost Child. I hope we see more videos like this soon, because I'm always looking for more RPG's that take a page out of SMT's book. Megami Tensei games have been the golden standard for JRPG's, so I'm surprised more of them haven't caught up yet in terms of quality-of-life improvements.
That being said, are there any JRPG's or indie RPG's with a similar style to older SMT games? I'm not talking monster-collection per-se, but a more grounded, dark or mature setting? Or anything that's got that dark, violent OVA charm to it? Maybe with a similar urban or 90's cyberpunk setting? I'd love to know it more inspired games exist out there. Even Japanese/indie games from other genres that have a similar style.

A game I half though would be on this list was Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. If you like the Dragon Quest monster designs and the idea of building a party out of them, then give this a look.
From what I recall the monster fusion system is interesting because there are benefits to fusing monsters as soon as you can (when they reach level 10) since monsters get stronger with each iteration of fusion they go through, gaining a "+1" to their rank each time. However its also worth holding off since they pass on some of the skill points they have earned and can offer stronger versions of their skill sets if you have enough skill points invested into them.
I might be misremembering some of that since I haven't played it in a while, but that's how I remember it.

Another game exactly like SMT is Demon Gaze Extra. It is by the same developer who made The Lost Child, Kadokawa Games. There is an enhanced remaster for Switch that came out very recently.
Demon Gaze Extra is a first person dungeon crawler that is extremely difficult even on normal. You catch demons using what's known as the demon gaze. The catch is the longer you have a demon out, the more demon resource they drain. If the resource hits 0 then the demon will go berserk and attack you. As the MC you can have up to 3 demons out at a time. Demon Gaze Extra has some nice mechanics. Though unlike The Lost Child or mainline SMT there is a small selection of obtainable demons that are captured via story missions.

I STRONGLY recommend Tokyo Xanadu. It's action RPG combat, but the characters and story go really in-depth in a fun episodic anime style structure. Its setting is also similar to Persona 5 despite releasing a few years before it. Particularly when one of the party members is basically male Futaba.

Tokyo Xanadu is Falcom through and through tho. It's a fun game, but it's clearly not based on the megaten formula. Instead it draws quite a bit from Ys and the Kiseki games.

@@KyussTheWalkingWorm absolutely agree. I personally wasn’t a fan of Xandu though tbh

Already completed it, it's a great underrated game. Love the action combat with teammate switching. You can say it combines Persona social bonding + Ys combat.

I love these kind of games. Others I know and played? I think "Ys: Lacrimosa of Dana", "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel" and maybe "Akiba's Beat", a RPG spin-off of "Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed" (but I didn't like that last that much, it has interesting characters, but the battles and dungeons were...meh)
But one I absolutely can recommend and loved on my PS Vita was Tokyo Xanadu
