On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Big thank you to Sunde for helping out with this video I think its important to go back sometimes and look at your mistakes and see where you can learn, I think the first mistake here was getting too close to him with I hit him with the 50cals, this allowed him to neutralize the fight with the 1 circle roller, then the wing dip because I didn't counter with the rudder and then finally I reversed the turn in a desperate attempt to get back into the fight which put me right in front of the guns, so, very very cool fight and awesome flying by Sunde. Hope you guys enjoyed.

Yah fixation kills another progression of goals :) Mayyyybe next time after damaging return to speeds not needing flaps away from stall speeds. Fixation is a funny thing just like hindsight :) Great show.
Wasn't "one little mistake" it was complacency, over confidence and lazy driving that set up this failure.

@@iCanHazTwentyLetters I'm guessing that, like the F-14, if you mishandle the rudder inputs your wings can exacerbate the problem by raising/dipping the wing.

The speed at which the other pilot capitalized on your mistake is insane. That's some top notch flying for sure.
differance betwen one airplane having working ammo and other not, AP and HE in GB is broken, they dont even sim real ammo types airplanes had, so now anything that have HE ammo in belt is to op. If 51 had historical ammo, that 190 would be burning...
It's marvelous to watch people that can actually fly and understand the mechanics and physics involved. Videos such as this are a true lesson in flying.

omg that fight was insane. Sunde had a whole gang of moves to throw out while you were closing the gap. Then when the time came he jumped on it relentlessly.
A large portion of the fight was actually just me in different stages of panic.
GS just makes it sound like i had it under control.

I will say - you display a lot of sportsmanship and humility in the battles - Sunday deserves the kill, but you were realistic in how it happened and did not say "he got lucky" - well flown by both of you.

Like a number of subscribers I'm an Instrument-rated pilot, and gotta say watching you is more fun and less stressful. Educational too - we don't cover single/dual circle, rate vs vertical etc. I've learned a bunch here.
I'm almost 70 years old but I would love to do this in vr but with my fx8350 and the gt640 I don't think it would go to good. so I will stick with far cry 5. but it's really fun to watch.
Consider it mate, You will be pressed with those specs, but i suspect it will run singleplayer missions and still look fine.
Its a fun game, and i know plenty of "old sports" who enjoy it immensly.
You could even just start with War Thunder Sim if you don't think your PC can handle the graphics

Probably THE most intense fight among all the IL-2 videos I've ever seen in RUclips. Really brillant demonstration of how realistic air combats could become even in video games.

It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on how the flight models in DCS and IL-2 compare.
For the P-51 at least there's a video out there of a real P-51 pilot comparing them, he considers the DCS rendition to be much more accurate.

Low speed Tip Stalls, always the P-51's greatest weakness. Really have to watch your pull low speed like that to much AoA and your done with no warning.
Yeah I witnessed that first hand a couple times. Immediate agressive full opposite rudder can save you but you‘ll still need some altitude. When you‘re on the deck it‘s kinda impossible to recover
@Omar Khurshid Sorry I don't know the answer. I was quite surprised how sensible the P-51 reacts in low speed + high angle of attack situations compared to other planes.
@Omar Khurshid the P-51 has a laminar flow airfoil. This means the air flow over the wing creates very little drag. This is what gave its amazing range. A side effect of this is there is not as much pressure "keeping" the air flow attached to the wing so the wing stalls much harder and with less warning than other aircraft. Except maybe a sopwith camel :) if your interested in the full details look up boundary layer and turbulent airflow vs laminar.
@Omar Khurshid Generally, in aircraft, you want the stall to initiate close to the fuselage. This gives you a mushy feeling, but you still have controllability with the ailerons. With a stall that initiates at the outer edge and the wing begins to drop, the natural reaction is to apply opposite ailerons to bring it back to level. But this usually just compounds the problem. In an effort to keep the stall closer to the fuselage, Washout can be added - the angle of incidence is decreased from the wing root to the tip.

Greg's Automobiles and Airplanes channel goes into depth on the P-51 wing design. It's not a true laminar flow wing, but a wing of laminar flow design.

That last 20 to 30 secs. literally scared the crap out me now that one move completely changed the whole dogfight. You don't make that many mistakes, but that was the perfect example of what can happen. That sucked. ☹

Firing up IL2 in VR the first time with hotas was a holy crap moment. I have 3x wrap around screens w/ track IR, VR blows everything away. It's wild how fast your brain adapts and can't distinguish that you're in a game.
My grandfather was a P-51 pilot with the 361st/376th fight squadron stationed in Bottisham field, part of the group that is famous for the Botthisham four photo ( he was not in that photo) Love the fact you have the famous yellowjacket P-51. Great video.

The lift coefficient is super important to understand. The 4 horsemen of flight apply to every aircraft, though some with thrust vectoring are changing that game now.
Why did his wing dip?
@@TexasGreed As I understand it, the combination of his low airspeed and the angle his aircraft was in meant that his left wing stopped receiving enough lift to counter its weight, so it fell.
@@lemax6865 Also a common issue with a laminar flow wing is that flow separation (Stall) can happen at much lower angles of attack.
Its why the P51 desipite being super potent does require a gentle touch.

both planes very strong, but completely different set of strengths snd weaknesses. I would prefer to be in the 51, but if the dora can get a opportunity to shoot, it carries a ton of cannon ammo and heavy mg ammo too.

With the Rift S VR, how is the "screen door effect"?
I had a Vive Pro and only used it a couple of times. I couldn't stand the SDE and pixel crawl.
I just got the reverb g2 but honestly the image despite optimisations from many youtube videos is still blurry and really not that good. Im taking it back and considering either the oculus rift s or the oculus quest 2 - which one would you say is better? Im reading mixed things and not sure .... at all

Great Videos Sidewinder! Curious was the opposition in this fight named Elanski? I flew a lot a decade ago with him and a lot of other old school guys. We flew as CIA squad, Anyway he flew like Ski used to.
Could have keep going around left after the wing dip. The only option left and he was already damaged.
Pretty ironic that the pilot would have survived that crash if he hadn't already been splattered all over the cockpit. Impressive flying by both.

There's a video on YT somewhere, made in the 1970s with 2 former Fw190-D pilots.
They were convinced that (with an experienced pilot) the Dora was BETTER than the P-51D.
I wouldn't argue with them.

@@GrowlingSidewinder The so called "Survivorship Bias", very common in ww2 aviation.
Spoiler: most Dora pilots(experienced and non experienced) died in combat.
I would see it as military fighting men having preference and love for the machine that they're flying. And who knows what the Dora pilots would say if they got the chance to fly the P-51D or vice versa

Love the content! Sadly, I don't have internet( for the PC), and if I did, my PC BARELY runs the new IL-2. But thats OK. I have the all the original Il-2 disks, and it's modded to as current day as possible. :D. Of course the enemy is A.I. but I watch your vids, load up IL-2, and try to replicate/test, comparing old IL-2, to modern. So.... it's fun. :D. ( miss my track-ir 2 though w 6 dof conversion.) Padlock just doesn't do it for the immersion. :D

U demonstrated very well how to use lag pursuit on a manuevering opponent. He tried was able to drag you down into his envelope, however, as the FW-190 does not do well above about 25,000.

The 190-Dora is a different beast than the Antons. The Dora is more optimized for high altitudes

Don't you have trouble identifying distant aircraft as friend or foe (as opposed to simply spotting) with the rift s lower resolution and screen door effect? I have a pimax 8kx hmd that virtually has no screen door effect and much higher clarity and though I can spot distant aircraft it's still difficult to identify the distant aircraft type.. I think the only hmd that won't have this issue is the varjo aero and pimax 12k when it comes out in a year (which I'll be getting and will blow all other hmds away with virtually human eye resolution AND human eye fov simultaneously for maximum immersion and situational awareness)

neither the dora nor the mustang are made for low speed turnfights, making this quite the slugfest. These engagements likely never happened because either aircraft would have disengaged or let their allies swoop in.

Same. The series is called IL2 Great Battles. Battle of Stalingrad/Moscow/Kuban/Boddenplatte etc.
The game is the same the only thing that changes is the aircrafts and the map. Big sales are a great chance to buy them all in the price of one 😃
It is all about stick time, I may have many hours in 109 but when I go in p51it still may happen. The solution I found was in p51 vs Fw 190 was not to get into 1 circle fights in p51 but to go for 2 circle fights and to maintain speed at least 300 kts. 4:07 In that position I may try to cross control and drop trottle to avoid the overshoot.
Very interesting fight, personally, I think I would have chosen the Bf109K-4.
