  • My husband bought some motors from a power wheelchair and mounted them onto a lawnmower he got for free through the app NextDoor and plugged it into an RC receiver. He can now mow the lawn remotely. We realize that this is not a new concept and that there are remote-controlled mowers that already exist. We just wanted to show that creating something like this is possible. See below for a list of items he used to do this.

    Super cool! One avenue of development would be to mount a permanent magnet motor and attach it to the starter pulley with a belt. It could then be used as a RC starter, and when running, it would act as a generator to recharge the battery. I am sure you can work the details out. Again, nice work.

    If you camber the rear wheels it will have more of a tendency to stay straight. They do this on hand driven wheelchairs as well. Your idea about the swivel wheels up front is a good one especially if your using one battery. The amount of force required to slide the front left and right is great and takes a lot of power but the swivel wheels will lighten that load and make it less likely for you to get stuck. Some other ideas would be to get a lawnmower that uses an automatic choke so you could leave the motor set to run at full speed at all times and then just use a relay switch to short the mower spark plug to the chasse to switch it off remote. Autostart for the mower requires a flywheel that has a cogg built into it and you would need to add a solenoid switch to relay power to the starter motor. Great job! Good ideas. I built one 12 years ago scrapping parts of an old motorized wheelchair. Got the swivel wheels off it and the motors and rear wheels. I bolted everything together using a square metal tubing as an overlay frame to support the motor and swivel. The lawnmower chasse just sits down in the center of the frame and I use the original bolts built into the mower for its original wheels to mount the overlay frame structure. This lets me adjust the height using the same levers on the original mower both front and back. You need to protect the electronics and make sure they are well ventilated. I'm using a small plastic tote set upside down so I pop of the bottom to access the electronics and I have electric fans to keep things ventilated. You can buy some really cheap all in one remote camera with antenna and a small view screen all for about $70 dollars or if you want to be able to pan and tilt you could buy a baby monitor system (that's what I used originally). My first method for controlling the motors was to use two sliding slotted metal sleeves with the toggle control off of the scrapped wheelchair and a couple of strong servos. That was too sketchy at first then I switched to the same Sawtooth speed controller you use. I've been cutting my lawn for 12 years. It's fun to watch people drive by real slow or stop and ask questions or panic because the mower is on and moving with no one around LOL. Enjoy what your doing. These are great projects. Thanks for the video.

      That's some really good advice! We especially appreciate the camber rear wheels idea. We have not thought of that one or been suggested it and it makes total sense! And yes, we have definitely switched to spinning caster front wheels for the front since this video came out. We're going to keep a lot of your other tips / advice in mind if we ever get around to building another one, which will probably be all electric. Thanks again for the kind words!

    Because the drive motors are a permanent magnet and have brushes, you can power them with a 6 volt battery. It will go even slower and you could put in a "series/parallel" switch(operated via another servo) to go from 6 to 12 volts when needed. Just my two cents worth.... Job well done!

I made one a couple years ago to mow under the pine trees. Dang, I've got an abandoned wheelchair, and a brand new lawnmower with broken back wheels, and two TX-16s OpenTX remote controllers, and a shop, and oceans of grass to be mowed, I need to do this. Lot of work and engineering and... all I'd have to buy is some batteries.
    As you got it it's probably totally adequate for your needs, but some more engineering could take it even further..
    You could FPV it with an analog camera and some goggles or to a 1080p TV or computer monitor indoors. Add a kill switch and electric start (eventually).
    Or better, a lot of flight controller boards have a GPS module you can add to them, and it will return the GPS coords back to the remote controller, so eventually you could write a program to follow a mowing pattern with some collision logic.
    Or you could do both, and the first mowing you do yourself with the camera, and the computer remembers roughly the path and gps coordinates, and for later mowings trys to replicate it.

    I'm in the process of making one right now using standard brushed esc's and a v-tail mixer from a plane. Your setup is awesome but I'd love to change my design so basically the mower can be rolled onto a platform with the motors etc so that it can be used remotely but also rolled off the platform to be used as a normal mower again. Kind of like a trailer but the trailer itself can move. My reasoning is that when you finish mowing you take the mower off, place a piece of wood where the mower sits and place a full esky of beer on top so anyone at a party gets a drink delivered to them.......multi purpose!!!!!

I would think what i would do when mowing, I dont adjust the speed after it chokes and start so why vary rpm. Start collecting parts, refine it, patent it and sell them for disabled people. The only improvement I could think of would be a local GPS sending system like triangle antennas able to load a program and let it go. Set up run app. First run is what programs and then it is just following orders. Only problem would be sticks an possibly small animals.

    Ok this is one of the coolest video series I've seen! Have you had any problems with vibration and the electronics? Also, do wheelchair motors seem too powerful? A human usually weighs quite a bit more than a lawnmower so I wonder if there are less-powerful motors that would still get the job done fine, while using less juice. Thanks for the great videos.

    • @MeantToBeLindseyB
      @MeantToBeLindseyB  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! We haven't had a problem with the electronics with the vibrations but we do check the wire connections frequently. As for less powerful motors, we are running these at half power, so yes... you can definitely find some that are better matched with the specs but these were already designed and geared for the speeds we needed, so it was just easier to use them.

    That would be really cool using an electric lawn mower (battery) you could then use channels on the rx to start & stop it. I think I’d add FPV to it with the right rx & some servos you could look left & right, up & down. I have an RC car like that, not much difference really.
    Your mower turns like a Zero turn, if it were me I’d put swivel wheels on the front like a Zero turn.

      Yeah. A lot of the things you've mentioned are definitely plans for the next build (electric mower). We have already switched to 360 casters since this video came out.

      When he first got that mower did it run poorly or normally? I’m looking at getting one for free and I’m assuming that doesn’t matter? I found one for free, but it says. Used poor significant wear. and cables are frozen.

    • @MeantToBeLindseyB
      @MeantToBeLindseyB  Год назад

      The person we got it from was having trouble starting it and had broken the pull string and just gave up on it. We knew we weren't going to use the pull string anyways so it was perfect for us. The only thing we had to do was clean or replace the carburetor. Since it was only $12 we just replaced it and it has run like a dream since then. You might need to take it to a small engine/mower repair shop if you can't get it running, but it's usually worth just fixing a free one instead of buying a new one.

    If your wheels slip on the grass, snow-blower tires with a more aggressive tread may fit the same rim. I believe they are also a 3x8 inch knobby tire (or similar).

      @@MeantToBeLindseyB Your welcome. When you mount permobil rims reverse mount them rather than add spacers. IE: put the outside of the rim facing in and the inside of the rim facing out. Its an old drag racing trick known as "reverse rims". Find lower cost batteries at batts dot com. Best wishes :-) ...I would love to see your updates in the future.
