Making RC Lawn Mower

- I used a 173cc gas engine, this engine has a battery charging function, the charging is too weak to cope with the current consumption, but it significantly extends the working time. The mower is powered by two 200w 350rpm motors, the electric motors are powered by two rc brushed motor speed controller. I used an electric lift with a maximum lifting capacity of 200 kg to adjust the height, I powered the rc brush motor speed regulator, it is less powerful than the ones I powered the motors with. The gas engine is turned off by a two-channel rc relay that I connected to the coil, After the remote control is turned off or the range is lost, the relay closes the contacts, which causes the engine to stop working. I adjusted all dimensions to the size of the mower housing and wheels mini quad. Working with a remote-controlled gas mower is a pleasure and great fun, the range of the remote control is large, so your legs will thank you for such work :)
Control parts I used:

no dialog; letting the work speak for itself. no super loud and annoying music. this is a fantastic video and build.
That paintjob completely transformed this whole build. Well done.
This is by far the best build I've seen in quite a while. Awesome job!
This is by far your best idea! Absolutely Legendary. The first person setup is unbelievable. So impressive! Sitting in a chair in the shade while mowing is the actualization of dreams.
I watched the whole video and really enjoyed it... I agree watching him sit around while it chewed up the ground was fantastic!
Thank you 😁
The insane part to me, was the fabrication was the hard part... the actual RC control was easy...
@@WorkshopFromScratch Hello, we are a company from Shenzhen, China. We can produce high-quality parts for you while significantly reducing costs. I think this product of yours can be mass produced, if you need production and processing, please contact me, thank you
@@WorkshopFromScratch , so, I take it that you live in the UK? I know of some places where this would be a good idea to manufacture. Also, you could get some agreements with the government and have places, like, say, national parks, national military parks, golf courses, and, most importantly, disabled people that are on low incomes, have this sort of thing to help them out with their lawn care needs. Now all that we need is a combination weed eater and lawn edger, with adjustable capabilities, a hedge trimmer, and a snow/dust/leaf blower, with all of them being remote controlled, and a person could have their own lawn care business. I am serious, you should make a legitimate business with your various devices, as it could be as much of a game changer, if not even more so, than the devices that companies like Worx and DR develop in my country.
The cleanest build I've seen in a long time. Gonna steal some ideas from your build your skills and tips are gold.
I wanted to build one in 1981, I was just thinking RC steering wheels assembly to a self propelled lawn mower, but you have taken this to a new level with separate rear wheel power it works great as a zero turn.
Now all it needs is GPS and it will go from *great to amazing!* You never cease to amaze me. Well done and *God bless.*
There is an Open Source Project Doing This, “Open Mower”
yet another project expertly executed, that final shot of you in your chair with your feet up, that's what it's all about. congrats fella.
Thank you 😁
This is some of the best machining I've seen on RUclips great job!
Workshop From Scratch.. Now that is my kind of lawn mower.
What a quality build. Nicely done. Very top shelf! The front wheels may be a bit more stable further out to the side but man that’s so minor. Super, super sweet! Next you need to “project that lawn”! Thanks for sharing that deserved a sub!
Great video, really like how you did the deck height control linkage. I really want to build a tracked version as I have some steep banks to cope with and this would fit the bill nicely.
Just get a tracked mower and snowblower and make a monster mower!
me too
@@georgef1176 That's not a bad idea although a tracked snow blower is pretty expensive and I'm on a limited budget.
Checkout my channel for a tracked mower build
I am building something similar to what you are describing here. Are you having an issue fabricating the tracks and rollers? Have you considered using the tread of a dirt bike tire as the track?
This type of mower would be perfect for those with physical disabilities, who cannot afford to pay for the mowing services from others. Thank you so much for this video. Would it be possible to add programming software and/or GPS functionality for the mower?
Great idea. Therein lies a dilemma. Pre-covid this machine is easily deep into four figures of price. Perhaps a machine could be subsidized within a program vehicle and be made affordable in this way
We have had robot lawnmowers for many years, they do all the cutting themself, 24/7.
I’ve missed mowing my lawns. This is really cool.
Hey .owing robots are pretty cheap and do a great job. They are low powered and small, but now every day in a random pattern and always keep the grass low.
Seems like an awful lot of fabrication and expensive equipment for someone with a disability on a fixed income .
@@WorkshopFromScratch Jaki koszt takiej kosiarki licząc same materiały.
Masz dar do tworzenia takich rzeczy,
Ja zrobiłem sterowanie do przyczepy kempingowej do silników Mover, właśnie jak ty oparte na sterowaniu wypełnieniem (PWM).
Jakie gotowe płytki wykorzystałes do sterowania silnikami dc.?
@@WorkshopFromScratch , so, about $217 USD, gotcha.
Like the part the dremel makes the sound when it cut slots for the fan...
This idea enables people to love to work.
Jesteś Mistrzem, ja o czymś marzę, a Ty to budujesz! Brawo👏👏
Dziękuje 😁
Awesome build! Me thinking how to turn my Kraton RC into a lawn mower 🤔🤔🤣
Impressive. Your knowledge of electrical systems, relays, and radio channels is really impressive.
Thank you 😁
It doesn't cut any lawn, I think the blade needs to be stronger, but the remote control cart was a super project! Very cool.
Genuinely very very impressed with this! I only have a small garden but definitely something I may work on for myself! Awesome work!
Electric robot mower meets Drone meets RC car equals to ( !!!!! PURE GENIUS !!!!! ).
You could make it a *Robotic Lawn Mower* !
There is an Open Source Project, “Open Mower” that has done the controls, and you have made an amazing machine, now you just need to combine them!
Yeah Husqvarna sells those. Nothing new
@@alexstromberg7696 New in that you could make it yourself with commonly available materials, and maintain it yourself.
Granted if i was in the EU I would probably just buy one of those models too!
one of the bet remotes i have seen
Maybe one of the best videos you have made!
Seeing you using the shop equipment that you already built is really satisfying!
Thank you 😁
@@WorkshopFromScratch I second that, super cool build. My only suggestion is hanging the cutting deck with chains and installing a string of rollers on the leading edge so that when it hits an immovable object like a rock, log, or uneven ground it bumps the deck up without transferring all the force to the plastic actuator.
Great bit of kit, I see the only thing missing is a nice cool drink while you relax & mow the grass 👍
I'd love one of those. Definitely on the "Must Make" list for me 👍👍👍👍
Your RC lawn mower approach is one of the best I've seen. Nice job!
I like to see good fabrication techniques like gussets and bolt through construction and/or use of threaded inserts which actually have structural integrity vs so many of the RUclips "makers" who think it's OK to thread thin-wall tubing for bolts and expect their projects to actually work beyond the 30 second demo at the end of their videos..
Seriously?
If i have mind like you. I'd be rich because so many people in my country need this.
That has got to be the best form for mowing I've seen yet. Even better than these robotic things by miles. Awesome job mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Mowing such a lawn mower is a great of fun 😁 Thank you 😁
@@WorkshopFromScratch Hello, we are a company from Shenzhen, China. We can produce high-quality parts for you while significantly reducing costs. I think this product of yours can be mass produced, if you need production and processing, please contact me, thank you
The machine is incredible. I'm in love with it. I see that there are lots of weeds. It would be easier to cut the grass if you add more grass seeds and get a broad leave selective weed killer. Then add fertilizer to the grass. Your lawn will look a lot better. Im a gardener, btw.
Needs a winter snow-blower attachment! Good work.
Great idea 😀 Thank you 😁
excellent invention of a remote control mower it looks spectacular, with time they will be like this, greetings from Mexico 👍
Someone in Mexico should hook up with this guy and set up a manufacturing plant near the California/Mexico border to build these things with GPS. Creating great jobs in both countries. and do it before China steals the product.
Agree one of the best mower frame productions on RUclips
If u could mass produce this you'd be rich.
Looks almost like a factory build agricultural device. Great work.
This is pretty damn cool. As much time and work and money that you spent you should of used a multi blade deck from a rider and done at least a 42 or 48 in cut. If you put small tracks on the rear for better grip it would serve as a great mower for slopes that are to big or dangerous for a rider too. But overall this looks like fun. As always great job. You are the best channel for these kind of builds. You started out with very little equipment to it is nice to see your shop and skillmanship grow.
I recently watched a video where the guy basically only used a 50 inch John Deere deck and engine to build one of these. It was half the length of this one and was all wheel drive. It looked like a converted push mower on steroids😂
I love this guy! Work smarter!!
Impressive. Any chance you could take this further by installing a boundary wire around the perimeter and automating a geo reference pattern? 😁
Great work!!!
Stay well, Joe Z
Super się ogladało - moje gratulace 😀
this makes to 100% more fun then a Lawn mower robot
Great idea and amazing build! You should put air filters on the electronics fan. Dont let it pull dusty air in and get all over the electronics! Also the engine rpm should not exceed 3600RPMS. It sounded far higher than that.
Thank you 😁 You are right with this filter, I will definitely do it. The motor I use is a Chinese motor, and I can't even find the name of the manufacturer, I once bought a mower with this motor in a supermarket and it had such a high speed rmp.
What a legend!! For the next project make it Gps guided.
I dono whether u see my comment or not but, i would like to appreciate few things in ur work.
1) u make it look proffessional
2) the attention to detail is really good
3) accessories are chosen wisely
4) even the lengths of the wires r more than enough even i like to keep it like tht
Lastly
If i can i would ve ordered one for myself from u, or build one diy copying u.
Bt i am from India n dont have facilities like tht with me.
Subscribing u as ur taste meets mine..
Keep up the good work n inspire us more...

rig up an alternator and be all set to go. Love the idea.👍👍👏👏
Część można prosić o listę elementów potrzebnych do zrobienia takiej maszyny?
Thats really impressive! I am a little confused however, All that hard work cutting grass and no beer. BRO!?
Pure genius my friend and your quality of workmanship is phenomenal!!! I very much enjoy and appreciate every one of your builds!! Thank you!
Thank you 😁
Great work, very organized, I'm really impressed, but you can also use solar panels to charge the batteries with your current system. Another idea: The gas engine could have been used to move the lawn mower through a mower gearbox with a clutch (The control of mower's movement by the clutch with DC actuator motor), there will be significant battery charging savings. You can also automate the system by adding some sensors with an Arduino board and some fixed reference points in the garden.👍
This is taking lawn mower simulator to a whole new level :D
Absolutely amazing build as always.
I was thinking about the same project for a while.
Quick Question: I was brainstorming about going a step further and controlling the mower through internet connection remotely
Any ideas?
GPS-Sensors are rather cheap these days. You could attach one to a microcontroller and write a routine which navigates from one waypoint to the next.
Throwing in a compass module or an accelerometer too won't probably hurt either.
Involves some math and will probably take a few test runs and some tweaking to get it right but then you'd have an autonomous lawn mower which works completely offline.
There is an open source project for GPS guided robot mowers. As cool as the remote-control feature is, it will quickly become boring. This way, you can just tell it to mow the backyard with a phone app.
awesome built
Great job. Next step -add electronic from smart vacuum cleaner with lidar head....
Man, you've make my oldest dream !!! And now you can add arduino controller, make program for your lawn and enjoy automatically trimming! But radio control it's fun too !!!
That radio controlled mower is fantastic
You should raid a roomba's electronics and go full automated, and have it double as security
I make a couple rc mowers using a $100 hft welder. This guy have his own metal fabrication shop with 10k worth of tools at least. Some stuff u design isn’t need like chains driven, and welling entire deck on to the frame. What if u need to swap out a different deck or mower later, u should do remote start instead remote height adjustment because how often u need to adjust the height while mowing. If I had all that equipments then I’d design it more compact because the swivels and battery deck is sticking out making the mower longer while your mower is in the center so u don’t get close cut to the walls so U have to cut like 3 or 4 times more. The remote video thing is a gimmick because if you’re not out there watching where it’s mowing then be ready to fix your engine from running over rocks, tree stumps, woods etc that u didn’t see because u were too far away. I build my first prototype out of aluminum about 10 years ago (check my channel) the. I gradually change it over years. It’s seems like u copy the designs. We went with this because us DIYers have basic tools and knowledge of metal fabrication. There’s a guy who built this commercial make his frames compact and he even have tank tracks because these go kart wheels have limitation when the grass are wet or hills.
Outstanding Achievement!!!
You've got some mad skills
Great craftsmanship. The only thing I would consider changing is the camera setup. Gimbal mounting the camera as opposed to mounting it via a gooseneck style mount will yield better stabilized view as opposed to a jittery one. That said, great rc mower.
You gave me 25 minutes of a big fat grin in my face and the build is just awesome ! Thank you for sharing !
so cool can i buy one also cool to see it running with side discharge open
Dorobić sterownik GPS i można zaprogramować teren koszenia, a kosiarka będzie sama kosiła wyznaczony teren.
Dobre!:)

This is amazing. As a child, 25 years ago I had a similar idea and drew a sketch. It never left the drawing table, but seeing a similar project done for real brings up a big smile! Thank you for sharing.
I plan on doing a build with an electric mower and use the wheels and motors from a mobility chair.
@@shanemichaels8289 sounds cool! At home we use a wired electric mower. I assume you would like to use a battery electric mower, right? You might be able to tap into its main battery for comms and steering. 🤔
@@joostk yes I’d like to use a battery mower. Or an A/C electric mower with a power inverter use the same battery for the drive motor and mower motor
@@shanemichaels8289 like the one I am building on my channel (albeit very slowly). You don't want to be using the mobility wheels, they are too narrow.
faster & easier to mow the lawn yourself, but where is the fun in that XD , good job.
Amazing build! This deserves millions of views!
Damn that is fantastic. You should sell the schematics to how to build this thing!
Awesome, what you need to do is take one of those auto floor sweepers and put the auto drive parts on that mower then you dont even have to mess with controlling it.
Work smart not hard. Your backyard definitely needed this device :)
That was a first class build, now all you need to do is add a GPS and an AUTOPILOT to it and you could program it do the mowing all by it's self.
I've bean dreaming of just this since 2008, when I moved to a property with one hectare of grass. It's nice to see that someone finally did it. A cool upgrade would be adding an Arduino-based autopilot (Ardupilot) and let the mower do its thing without even having do drive it.
If you have a big enough yard: Stick a pole in the centre, attach a rope to it. Have a self driving mower with a rope attached. Start it and let it run. Every round around the pole the lawnmower is pulled closer since the rope is wound around the pole and you only need to switch it off if it reaches the centre pole.
At least the majority is now mowed 🙂
Ideally, I would have loved to arrange my garden then in a circle around that pole, but what I gotten was a hilly garden with many already existing trees. A pity I can't play my idea...
@@marwerno What a great idea! Can't test it out though, as I no longer live in that house. Much smaller garden now. The former place had a lawn about the size of a football field, and just as flat. Should have thought about the rope trick back then.
Cheers
@@marwerno , get rid of the trees, till the soil, and rebuild your garden, problem solved.

Amazing! Your work is top notch! Only thing I’d try is a rc car remote with the wheel possibly be a bit easier to control.
its setup to drive like a zero turn. left stick controls the left motor and the right stick controls motor. both forward to go straight forward, both backward to go straight backward. then mixing forwards and backwards to turn in the respective directions.
Well I be damned. Now I gotta figure a way to do this with a commercial zero turn mower. You just changed the game Sr. Props!

I dont know what makes me more jealous, that you have all the tools or that you have all the scrap. I do think the paint job may be a bit of a missed oppourtunity though, that beast was looking seriously ratrod for a while there...
