Making RC Lawn Mower

  • I used a 173cc gas engine, this engine has a battery charging function, the charging is too weak to cope with the current consumption, but it significantly extends the working time. The mower is powered by two 200w 350rpm motors, the electric motors are powered by two rc brushed motor speed controller. I used an electric lift with a maximum lifting capacity of 200 kg to adjust the height, I powered the rc brush motor speed regulator, it is less powerful than the ones I powered the motors with. The gas engine is turned off by a two-channel rc relay that I connected to the coil, After the remote control is turned off or the range is lost, the relay closes the contacts, which causes the engine to stop working. I adjusted all dimensions to the size of the mower housing and wheels mini quad. Working with a remote-controlled gas mower is a pleasure and great fun, the range of the remote control is large, so your legs will thank you for such work :)
    Control parts I used:
    Controller RC Electric engine -amzn.to/4aME1oi
Controller RC electric lift - amzn.to/44ebZ2x
    Remote Transmitter - amzn.to/3Wb9EU4
Gear Reduction Brushed Electric Motor - amzn.to/4bafXLR
    Electric Linear Actuator DC 12V - amzn.to/3xI0Fj6

@@WorkshopFromScratch , so, I take it that you live in the UK? I know of some places where this would be a good idea to manufacture. Also, you could get some agreements with the government and have places, like, say, national parks, national military parks, golf courses, and, most importantly, disabled people that are on low incomes, have this sort of thing to help them out with their lawn care needs. Now all that we need is a combination weed eater and lawn edger, with adjustable capabilities, a hedge trimmer, and a snow/dust/leaf blower, with all of them being remote controlled, and a person could have their own lawn care business. I am serious, you should make a legitimate business with your various devices, as it could be as much of a game changer, if not even more so, than the devices that companies like Worx and DR develop in my country.

Another idea: The gas engine could have been used to move the lawn mower through a mower gearbox with a clutch (The control of mower's movement by the clutch with DC actuator motor), there will be significant battery charging savings. You can also automate the system by adding some sensors with an Arduino board and some fixed reference points in the garden.👍

GPS-Sensors are rather cheap these days. You could attach one to a microcontroller and write a routine which navigates from one waypoint to the next.
Throwing in a compass module or an accelerometer too won't probably hurt either.
Involves some math and will probably take a few test runs and some tweaking to get it right but then you'd have an autonomous lawn mower which works completely offline.

I make a couple rc mowers using a $100 hft welder. This guy have his own metal fabrication shop with 10k worth of tools at least. Some stuff u design isn’t need like chains driven, and welling entire deck on to the frame. What if u need to swap out a different deck or mower later, u should do remote start instead remote height adjustment because how often u need to adjust the height while mowing. If I had all that equipments then I’d design it more compact because the swivels and battery deck is sticking out making the mower longer while your mower is in the center so u don’t get close cut to the walls so U have to cut like 3 or 4 times more. The remote video thing is a gimmick because if you’re not out there watching where it’s mowing then be ready to fix your engine from running over rocks, tree stumps, woods etc that u didn’t see because u were too far away. I build my first prototype out of aluminum about 10 years ago (check my channel) the. I gradually change it over years. It’s seems like u copy the designs. We went with this because us DIYers have basic tools and knowledge of metal fabrication. There’s a guy who built this commercial make his frames compact and he even have tank tracks because these go kart wheels have limitation when the grass are wet or hills.

I plan on doing a build with an electric mower and use the wheels and motors from a mobility chair.

@@shanemichaels8289 sounds cool! At home we use a wired electric mower. I assume you would like to use a battery electric mower, right? You might be able to tap into its main battery for comms and steering. 🤔

I've bean dreaming of just this since 2008, when I moved to a property with one hectare of grass. It's nice to see that someone finally did it. A cool upgrade would be adding an Arduino-based autopilot (Ardupilot) and let the mower do its thing without even having do drive it.

    • @marwerno

If you have a big enough yard: Stick a pole in the centre, attach a rope to it. Have a self driving mower with a rope attached. Start it and let it run. Every round around the pole the lawnmower is pulled closer since the rope is wound around the pole and you only need to switch it off if it reaches the centre pole.
At least the majority is now mowed 🙂
Ideally, I would have loved to arrange my garden then in a circle around that pole, but what I gotten was a hilly garden with many already existing trees. A pity I can't play my idea...

@@marwerno What a great idea! Can't test it out though, as I no longer live in that house. Much smaller garden now. The former place had a lawn about the size of a football field, and just as flat. Should have thought about the rope trick back then.
      Cheers
