Just a few notes: Dulce Pontes Song "Lusitana Paixão" is not a fado song. It is a song about fado songs. And the instrument that Lúcia Moniz is playing is not a "ukelele" it is a "cavaquinho". Cavaquinhos were introduced in Hawaii by portuguese imigrants and then adapted to what is now called an ukelele.

The good old days when you had a live orchestra on Eurovision. Sad it's no longer like that.

I’m portuguese and I was 14 when Lusitania Paixão came out and I was so in love with it. It’s still one of my favourites entries of eurovision. I used to sing it over the fixed line phone to my friends. Nice memories

Although Dulce Pontes' sings Fado, at least I consider her to be a fado singer mostly, her song here for the Eurovision Festival is not Fado at all, it was just a very good but very 80s song more kin to Dona Summer's ballads as an example.

Lúcia brought more of the typical instruments and sounds of traditional portuguese music. Cavaquinho and corridinho, more specifically. Ukelele is actually an adapted version of the portuguese cavaquinho and comes from it due to portuguese immigration to Hawaii during 1800. Cool cultural extanges! That's the real gold! 😉

Bette Midler she mention that in one of her books Ukelele was introduced in Hawai by the Portuguese two centuries ago ..but the Americans hardly talk about that...maybe they don't want to know and talking about the might dollar is more important...
Anyway I do like Dulce Pontes..she have a few duets recorded with big people in showbiz..also recorded with Ennio Morricone..but no many people knows about it.

Very difficult to choose But in the end Dulce Pontes is the VOICE, Lúcia Moniz has a beautiful voice and the song talks about the roots that the Portuguese left on several continents, whether through the discoveries or because it is a country of emigrants, what we took and what we brought and no matter how different we are in music we connect, at least that's what it conveys to me, But Lusitana Paixao is that song that even after 30 years I still know the lyrics, it's not FADO but it's what Fado represents in US

Hi there! Cute accents, guys! ;-) Thanks for comparing these amazing songs! Both are beautiful...Dulce's voice is just out of this world and she sings beyond her soul...Lúcia is amazing too and really everybody's darling!
We are fortunate to have presented great songs and singers over the years (even if sometimes we were the only ones believing that 🙂). Here my favourite entry of all time ;-)
Maria Guinot (love the lyrics) ruclips.net/video/H9QwSkpDtoY/видео.html&ab_channel=EuroFans

2 das minhas canções favoritas de Portugal na Eurovisão. Mas acho que a melhor canção nacional na Eurovisão foi a da Maria Guinot em 1984 ...

The ballad from 1991 is pretty and well-sung, however, it doesn't stand out melodically or stylistically when compared to other classic Eurovision ballads. I way prefer 1996, because it has a more distinct character. That year the contest was also hosted in Oslo, Norway and the Norwegian jury awarded its 12 points to Portugal. Well-deserved!

I would actually compare Chamar a Música - Sara Tavares versus Lusitana Paixão - Dulce Pontes

I'm torn on this - I agree the first song is `classier` however the second song has great production.

    Olá.
Towards the end of Amalia Rodrigues' life, fado seemed to perish with her. After the end of Salazar's cruel dictatorship (1974), Portugal was slow to recover. Although fado also contributed to the liberation, hardly anyone dared to surpass Amalia. She died in 1999 and after some time fado was renewed like the phoenix from the ashes.
    Here I explain fado: ruclips.net/video/737KjXllm1k/видео.html

    • @RuiCBGLima

The fun part is that the Ukulele is the direct descendent of the Cavaquinho.
It was invented in Hawaii by migrants from Açores that took their music and instruments, including the Cavaquinho... as far as I know, this could be either, what changes basically is the tuning, because the reverb of the instruments doesn´t matter much in that hall context/environment

That's not fado. Typically, fado is a singer, one classic guitar and a portuguese guitar. And that's not Dulce pontes in her best. Listen to her canção do mar live in Athens. 🤯 That was when Portugal wanted to be like others in eurovision. That song is meh for what dulce pontes really is.

Ainda a Dulce Pontes não tinha nascido e amor a Portugal já era cantada em várias línguas.
