His distintive voice is getting raspberry with age! Love it! Glenn just had ones of voices that you never forget! "Good intentions", to me was toad,s masterpiece! A forever fan!
This album came out the year I turned 16, got my first car, and would drive endlessly with it playing. This song takes me back there immediately. Thank you for this amazing classic. ❤️
Glen's music, with and without the rest of Toad, has been a gigantic part of my musical life. His lyrics and music have always touched something important in me. I lived in Santa Barbara many years ago, managing a bakery. Glen would show up at the bakery from time to time. Seeing him as a father, with his baby in a carrier on his chest, was really sweet. It made me want to be dad, too and set my wife and I on a path to parenthood. Thank you for all of the years of sharing your creative work with us, Glen. Can't wait to see you in Novato next month.
Glen is a really underrated guitarist. Even belting out those awesome lyrics, he never misses a note. Did an amazing job of transposing both his and Todd's parts into a great solo composition.
Lol. Never misses a note? He's *known* for missing notes. Even has a name for it when he does 🌰🐿 on his weekly Facebook and RUclips mini-concerts. And we love him for it.
I saw GP 2 yrs ago. He was GREAT!Before the performance, he waited at the concession stand and bought a coffee like the rest of us and few people realized who he was. Then on stage Glen said... it's been a rough yr: I got divorced, my kid went away to college and my dog died. People reacted to the dog death, but not to his family breaking up. He gritted his teeth and sang "Go." As a single dad, I never felt a stronger connection to a performer than I ever had at the 40 or so live concerts I had ever attended.
My wife and I had the privilege of attending a Toad the Wet Sprocket concert in Boston last month and it was easily the best one I've ever been a part of. They gave the option to purchase VIP seats which, of course, I simply HAD to because TTWS is easily one of my all-time favorite bands. For that price, we met the band, exchanged brief pleasantries, took a pic, and were then ushered to a section of the theater around the middle of the floor. There was a railing so we sat there. Turns out that was an excellent choice on our part because the band members (Glen, Dean, and Todd) came down and stood legit right in front of us with only about three feet of separation between us and them. We were so close that we felt like we were invading their personal space, even though they came to us. lol They, of course, thanked us for coming, thanked us for our support, etc., then Glen Phillips is like, "Alright, let's see if we can entertain you for a bit." They bust out with intimate, acoustic versions of "Nanci," then "Fall Down." Kinda felt like I was at a MTV Unplugged taping or something. It was surreal. They capped off with "All I Want" and what was funny was that close to the end of the song, there's that bass part and Dean Dinning, the bassist, had only a bead shaker thingy in his hand, so I was thinking, "Well, I guess he won't be able to do the bass riffs that are coming up." All of a sudden, Dean whips out a kazoo and starts hitting the bass notes. A kazoo. Needless to say, he got some laughs and some appreciative applause from us for that stunt. Such a great, great, GREAT start… and they still had another hour before they were set to take the stage to put on the ACTUAL concert.
@@thewab1974 Wow, just wow. What a great experience. I read your first part, and thought THAT was the concert. I would remember that experience for the rest of my life!
@@jeffj2495 - I still think about that evening. This really IS a band that appreciates its fanbase and it shows. I was so fortunate to have experienced it.
I'm 64 years old and this guy has a f****** unbelievably great voice!!! I think he's one of the toads! Like the wet sprocket? Anyway it doesn't matter this guy is got a great voice! Hard to find!
I’m 57 years old. Several months ago I discovered Toad The Wet Sprocket going down a music “rabbit hole”. I recognized one of their old hits. THAT VOICE❤️‼️ I began listening to their music. Later on I saw an old video of them performing live and I instantly “stopped in my tracks” when I saw that quirky adorable young man belt out that voice! Recently, I found solo Glen Phillips. He still sounds amazing! His songs are incredible. Truly a gifted artist and a beautiful soul. I’m so grateful I discovered him!
Every once in a while, WXRT in Chicago plays this time, and piques my curiosity about TTWS all over again. His timbre and phrasing overlap just enough with Bowie and Peter Murphy.
Why do people keep saying Glen is 'underated', when Glen is in a total league of his own, well deservingly so. He's never been underated as so many of you put it. He's still going, after all these years, which says alot more for Glen then just being underated. Instead, he is perfectly rated, on top.
With the right management he would be able to tour the World, I suppose that is what is meant by "underrated". An odious reaction (I'm not saying from you, someone else) would be maybe he doesn't want or need that. What confounds me is Glen's peers fare differently (better perhaps) while their music isn't necessarily more prominent. But they structure their livestreams and interaction with fans for in-person shows differently. A little fairness is far reaching.
Literally want to like this 1000 times. I can't begin to express my gratitude for this music. It has meant much to me for decades now. It's part of me. Thank you for your words and for your music. It's very dear to me.
I just saw this clip on instagram, found it marvellous, then came over here 😊❣️ Reading all the comments, "underrated" is one of those words we ascribe to anyone who isn't as well known as we hope or expect them to be. Well, I will assert that nowadays it has a lot to do with the Artists themselves. Try to protect your image and set boundaries with fans. There was a comment about "missing notes" during the livestreams, yes, reading the random chatter will distract a person. It's of no consequence, until someone intentionally stops a song to address a comment or coddle a request out of left field that's out of tone to the setlist❣️ 😒. Watching this reminds me of how precious, important and meaningful the music is, even the predictability of the livestreams shouldn't change that. Thank you for this series of songs, Paste Magazine, invite Glen again please 👏 😊 💜.

I don't think he understands how many lives he's touched with his music ! Such a raw musician! Love it

I’ve heard this song about a million times, but this was like listening to it for the first time all over. Wow…that last note or two. Glen FTW! 🤎🐿🤎
how is this guy still so mesmerizing, i could not take my eye of his guitar and locked on to his voice

"The truth is not kind And you've said neither am I" sums up so much of Generation X's life experience...
