      Please do a bio on Collective Soul! Frontman Ed Roland spent about a decade in 80s hair bands and New Wave bands before his breakout hit Shine! He made a demo album of songs in which he played almost all the instruments on almost all the songs. He labeled the fake band Brothers and Brides and had his younger brother give it to a college radio station. The station played Shine, which used a drum machine, and it took off to huge success! Ed quickly pulled together a band from his small town in Stockbridge GA and changed the name to Collective Soul. The band would arguably become the most played Rock band on the radio in the 90s and the Rock band with the most #1 albums in the 90s. Over the years, the band would have to deal with a manager who was stealing money, a backstabbing bandmate, a bandmate struggling with addiction, a label who wouldn't promote their songs, and declining sales after going independent. Yet, they're still making music with a talented lineup and they love what they do!

    • @markshaw510
      @markshaw510 3 года назад +1

      @FAT COUNTRY Yeah, you can look it up. It's in old interviews. Ed did the majority of Hint Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, like 90% of it. There are some people credited to some of the instruments on a few of the songs in the album cover notes. I assume Ed couldn't play the drums real well because he used a drum machine on a bunch of the tracks (or because he originally intended the batch of demos to only launch a songwriting career). Ross Childress - who was CS's first lead guitarist and an extremely talented one at that - said Ed was an accomplished guitarist. So, he may have pulled off that epic guitar solo in Shine, not Ross. The early years of CS (1992-early 1994) seem to be a secret. It hasn't really been made known if the rest of the "original lineup" (Ross, Dean Roland, Will Turpin, and Shane Evans) played on the album. Atlantic Records marketed them like they were already an established band in 1994 when in reality Ed had just pulled Dean and Will out of college to go on tour. The Collective Soul who played a few local gigs in 1992 were probably different people, except Ed and maybe Shane or Ross.

    In 2007 I was walking down 6th Street in Austin, Texas during the SXSW Festival. Bands were playing everywhere, and I was trying to decide which showcase to hit next, when I heard a familiar voice singing from a mostly empty small bar. It was Glen Phillips doing one of his solo tunes with an acoustic guitar. I'd never heard the song, but there was no mistaking his voice. I went in and was one of a handful of people who got to see his fantastic set of new stuff, with a couple Toad songs thrown into the mix. It was such a treat in the middle of a festival where I had been subjected to an endless onslaught of swaggering musicians who were full of more strut than talent. I hope to catch Toad if they come through Memphis again.

    Toad is still to this day my favorite band of all time and there isn’t a song of theirs I dare skip. They have a magic in each song that possesses it’s own unique secret emotion knitting their fans together like a generational Amish quilt. I was saddened to see them disband after Coil, which I felt was their most mature and best album up until that point, but continued to follow Glen and see him live on every solo album until they reunited. Glenn is BY FAR one of the best singer/songwriters of our generation and doesn’t miss. Their new material showcases their maturity through the years and what is amazing is they haven’t lost it whatsoever and have only aged like fine wine. Unlike many bands of 30 years their music is relevant and unforced and still offering solace. Eternal love for Toad!!!

    I really got into this band, this was "The Garage" band. They took their sound with them when they gained some fame and notoriety. They also had that 90s ingredient that everyone else was trying to hard to find. Songs like "Fall Down" and "Hold her down" we're instantly added to play lists. Infectious melodies and grooves couple with lyrics and messaging that were simply too good to ignore.
    As I have said before the 90s was THE decade for great music and there will never be another decade that sounds like the 90s, I am so glad however to see a lot of young folks still listening and still grooving to the 90s music. To all of you Millennials, Gens Y and Z, thank you for keeping it alive and going and I wish you all could have been there with us at all the awesome concerts and live performances, I feel so bad that you missed out on some the greatest events there was at the time.

    I've been waiting for you to cover this band. Pale is a true hidden jem of an album! Dulcinea is probably my favorite. Their newest single "Starting Now" is really good, especially if you're a fan of "Somethings Always Wrong"

    One of my favorite bands. I saw them live twice at the House of Blues, and both times they would come out after the show and hang out with the crowd. Very approachable and down to earth people.

    Just want to say great job on background music. It gives a nostalgic feel but without any negative or positive tone. It allows the person to listen and draws you in to the story even if you're not particularly interested in the artist being spoken about.

    Thanks for this!!! Keep it coming with the '90s acts! I love Toad the Wet Sprocket! I hear "All I Want", & "Walk on the Ocean", literally everyday, multiple times a day, at my job, & i'm still not tired of those tunes, lol. Would love to see you also cover Third Eye Blind, Better Than Ezra, Semisonic, Oleander, etc, in the near future.

    Saw them a few years ago in Reading Pennsylvania at a free concert with Rusted Root. I knew their radio hits but when I looked them up again to see how much more I knew I couldn't believe how much I liked the songs by them I never heard on the radio. It was a great show and hope they come back to my area again.

    1. I find it refreshing to hear about a group/individual that does NOT have any controversies surrounding their career.
    2. 'Walk on the Ocean' was another popular mid 90's middle/high school slow dance song.
    3. Sid, what I like about your channel is that you talk about your stories without worshiping at the altar of musicians like some content creators do (*cough*Eddie Trunk*cough)

    Toad.... I love them!! Gloriously underestimated. So much so that when you turn it on for a get together at least 1 enlightened soul will request the bands name. It really sticks even now. The sound, the feel and I adore the atmosphere I can create py pushing play... inspiring and refreshing add in relatable, that is a recipe for wonderment. I wanted create a space in my bedroom that was warm and cozy, cleared the whole of it out and proceeded to make a play list. Toad TWS claimed much of the list. I "dry" brushed my room and it was magic!!
    Windmills.... 1 of my favorite tunes by them. New album is materful!! It's too soulful for rock and its too smart for soft rock lol... when it doesn't fit in a tiny box... it will always withstand the test of time. I don't like Elvis but, put on some neil diamond we good.

    In 1989, I won a cassette version of Bread & Circus from my college radio station. I had never heard of them but I grew to like the album. A few years later, I got Fear, and it became one of my favorite albums of that year. Got to see them that year and they were great. I always thought they were unfairly overlooked compared to the other 90s bands.
