The number one reason to get rid of the ads is so you no longer have to slide to unlock. When you turn on the device you’re in your book. This is most convenient when you have a magnetic case that will turn the Kindle on every time you open the cover just like you would a traditional book.
The “hole” between the charging port and the power button is the charge indicator light.
Like you stated text to speech is an accessibility feature for the visually impaired. It’s not meant to replace Audible.
I only shop on the Kindle if I’m buying the next book in a series after finishing a book. I only do that because Amazon makes super easy by showing you the next book. I don’t ever browse on the device though. It’s way too slow for that. I browse on my iPhone/iPad.
I never leave airplane mode on because I need Whispersync. I read on all my devices, including my iMac, equally so I need to leave it on so it will sync my place. I also love being able to sync my place between ebook and Audible book. I used to think it was stupid to purchase the same book twice, but since I have Kindle Unlimited many of those books include the Audible book too. Now I understand I t’s Amazon’s killer feature. Too many people are sleeping on this feature. I totally was. But I’m so woke to it now. I’m not saying I’ll buy every book twice. But I’ll do it for my favorite authors. Pro tip: buy the Audible book then get the Kindle book from a public library that uses the Overdrive system. Whispersync will still work between them! Unfortunately this tip will only work for people in the USA.
I don’t mind that this model is WiFi only. When I’m away from home I just tether it to my iPhone when I need too. It’s also come in handy when the when electricity goes out. That happened to me last night with the bad winter storm that went across the Midwest. I hadn’t synced my Kindle to the furthest read page. But I was able after tethering. Once place was synced I put my Kindle into airplane mode.
Kindles aren’t backlit. They’re front lit. Kindle screens are opaque so you can not shine a light through them the way you can with LCD screens. At the bottom of the device is four LEDs. If you hold it like your reading then tip the top of the device towards you until you’re looking straight down the screen you’ll be able to see them if you have the brightness turned up. This works by having the lights shine across the screen from the bottom to the top. That’s why it doesn’t disturb your husband because the lights aren’t shining out towards you. They are shining up towards your ceiling.
You can also pinch to zoom to make the font bigger/smaller. I also like adding custom fonts to to my device. I have a font that was designed for eInk displays called ChareInk. The other font I use is called Verdana Pro Condensed. I like both of them because they let me fit more words on the screen. I also like using different fonts for different stories. I don’t like reading a story set in like the Victorian age with a super modern font. So I use ChareInk, which is a serif typeface, with books set in the past. Verdana Condensed Pro, a sans serif typeface, for all books set in the present or future. I read both on size 1 with no bolding. Orientation is set to portrait. Margins are set to the narrowest because I don’t want to waste space. Alignment is set to justified. Spacing is set to narrowest.
I keep Layout set to show page numbers. And I keep the clock off. Pro tip: If the time left is wrong you can reset it by typing, “;ReadingTimeReset” minus the quotations into the search box. I don’t worry about it anymore since I track my reading time with Bookly. It’s an app that’s available on both iOS and Android. I love it because I can start a reading session right from my Watch.
I love Goodreads integration. I don’t browse GR on the device, but I love being able to update my status from the device. I love that it automatically tells GR that I’ve started a new book and and it marks it as finished when I’m done. All I have to do is give my star rating and it tells GR and Amazon for me. That’s awesome because I never rated on Amazon prior to having a Kindle.
It’s more expensive because eInk displays are still expensive. LCD screens are non-proprietary, super cheap with many manufacturers, but eInk screens are proprietary because just about all eInk displays come from the same place.
Your mom’s Kindle isn’t an original. It’s a Kindle 2 and it debuted in February 2009.
I won’t ever pay full price for a Kindle. I highly recommend buying Amazon refurbished Kindles. They have more rigorous testing than brand new devices and they come with a warranty too. I can’t tell the difference between the refurb and a brand new one. My second Kindle was a refurbished 2016 basic. I paid $50 for it. I also will only ever buy Basic Kindles because I don’t think the Paperwhite has enough features that warrant the extra expense. And the Oasis is just plain ridiculous.

Thank you for such a great review! I just got one too on during Amazon Prime day and the price was perfect but little instructions ...so thank you again! ;)

This was great thanks. I've just updated my Kindle from a 4th Gen to this White Model.
I would've preferred the black, but I was concerned about fingerprints.
So pleased I went with the white, it even looks cool in the black OEM case I bought with it.
Got it 3 days ago and love it. It was pretty intuitive to set up, but there were some really great tips here and I'm totally with you on "muscle memory."
I was worried about the loss of physical buttons.
    Not anymore! 😉😉

Airplane mode usually turns off wifi, so maybe that's why its clunky or slow.

That is a unique looking statement ring. I’m still torn on what I want to get between this, kindle fire, an iPad or a paperwhite 😂. I do like how this looks. Oh no audio and ads 🤔. Thanks for your review. I can say is that I wouldn’t be distracted with this option. Wow so the dictionary is already on there. I love that you demonstrated everything we need to know.

If you’re primarily looking for a reader I suggest the kindle over the kindle fire. The fire is a good cheap tablet but mine has very bad battery life, the kindle battery last much longer is better for reading in bright light.

It's really good for reading-only purposes. The bluetooth only feature is a bummer, but it's definitely a good buy if you get it on sale

Very true. Since the Kindle Fire has the tablet feature alongside the ereader function, the battery is pretty easily drained.

This version of kindle is adequate--meaning it's just alright to read. Kindle Fire is literally shit. iPad, it's very really good and much better than most android tablets out there, but ye don't wanna spend too long reading on that glorious screen. Paperwhite 4 is the best, purposely so. Oasis, even better.

Is the 167 PPI good enough to read? That's the only reason why I'm still caught between the basic model and the Paperwhite, which has 300 PPI.

It has great reading quality. My test for reading fitness was whether or not I could read on it in direct sunlight. While waiting in line in the hot sun to go grocery shopping, it preformed wonderfully.

Unless you have them side by side you won’t no the difference. It’s perfectly legible even at the smallest size. I love this model! I have it in black.
