You don't need a kindle, a kindle app is fine as I have tested it out before. thought I did use different programs but they were basically convert the book to epub.
One clarification, and a tip.
Firstly, some books can come from Amazon without DRM. TOR, for example, doesn’t put DRM on their books.
As for making quicker/simpler, Calibre has some automation features. Somewhere in the setting you can specify a folder that it will auto import books from. Set that up and then if calibre is running and you put books files into that folder they will automatically be imported. There is also a setting in preferences to automatically convert books when importing
With that automation in place the process of importing and converting becomes pretty painless, but you’ll still have to download the books individually
Thanks for the very useful video. A hint from my side: As long as you connect your Kobo to your computer, a button "Send to device" appears on calibre. After importing the Kindle ebook into calibre and converting it to a drm-free version, you can just click on the "Send to device" button and the ebook will be automatically uploaded to your Kobo. No need to drag-n-drop it.
Thank you so much.. That's something I wanted to know. I prefer to use the option Calibre gives me instead of copy and paste or drag the file to Kobo's folder. Thanks!
Thank you, really helpful! As a Kindle owner for about 10 years, I wanted to try the Kobo but was hesitant as I didn't want to lose my Kindle library.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been thinking of getting a color Kobo, but I was hesitant to take the plunge since all of my ebooks are from Amazon.
Thanks for watching! I hope the video was helpful! :)
@@dylancanread It definitely was. I will be saving this video for if I ever do buy a Kobo.
Okayyy coming thru with the helpful vids, as someone who is going from kindle to the new libra color, this vid is perfect; ty!!😊
I can’t tell you enough how grateful I am for you putting this informational video together. This really helped me out so much. Thank you.
Calibre is such an OG ebook application. I will always love it. Great video
You saved my day! 🎉🎉🎉
I've just received the Kobo Libra Colour and I have so many kindle books .. to have all my books on one EReader. Perfect! Thank you sooo much!! 😊
If you're having issues with Calibre crashing, it's likely you need a newer version of the deDRM plug it. The current version may be found here: github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v10.0.3 (you can also find this new link in the description)
THANK YOU!!!
It keeps giving an error when trying to add plug in
thank you for teaching about DRM and DRM Removal, it's a very important topic more people should know about!
Perfect! Thanks for the info, will use this when I get my Kobu because there are books on amazon I want that aren't on Kobu plus!
This is perfect and a very timely video tutorial cause I just finished preordering the Kobo color Libra and was wondering how was I going to read my Kindle books in the Kobo. You’ve just solved my problem. I have the items and software already so I’ll be ready to follow your instructions once I receive my Kobo. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for this video!! It was super helpful and I can know read my Kindle books on my new Kobo Libra Color. In love!! 😊
Thanks you so much!!! I've been trying to figure out the drm issue for days now
Thank you, I've just bought a Kobo colour after owning a Kindle and this was a great help.
Thank you so much! This video made it so much easier to set up
Amazing video! Very easy to follow and worked perfectly!
I do have to say you can bulk upload to your kobo, at least on Windows. I just selected all of my books and clicked "Send To Device" up the top.
Everything worked perfectly, thank you very much for making this vid! I picked up my Kobo Libra Color today and was a bit sad to not have all my books on one device, problem solved 🤩
Thank you so much! I was trying to figure out how to get it to work for the longest time!!
Such a good tutorial! Thank you so much. You've gained a new subscriber!
Thank you for this! I've really been wanting to switch from kindle to kobo and this made it easier--I was already dreading this part but its not hard at all!
Thank you for this, I just posted the question on your other video about viewing Kindle and Nook
This was so helpful, Dylan! Thank you. I pre-ordered the Kobo Libra Colour and was sad I would have to start all over regarding buying books I wanted to annotate with the stylus. Reddit always talks about Calibre and it just didnt compute with me. This helped me so much.
Im so glad it was helpful!
Excellent! We need more technical videos and tips like this!!
Thanks for watching! Glad this one was useful :)
this was SO easy and useful!! THANK YOU!
That's so useful thanks! I've really struggled to get this to work. but it works perfectly. Happy reading/
That was super helpful, thank you!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching :)
Finally got this set up and holy cow it works! Previously, I couldn't remove DRM from newer books, but I just did it your way and it actually worked on the newer books!
oh-oh. I just tried loading a third book and it says I don't have a compatible device registered for this content. My Kindle is an old one with the keyboard so I'll probably need a newer Kindle. Strange though. It didn't have any trouble with 2 books published in March but did with a book from February.
This is extremely useful. Many thanks!!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching :)
This worked perfectly ! Thank you ❤
You saved me from having a complete meltdown. THANK YOU!!
This is excellent. I’ve used calibre and Apprentice Alf’s plugin since 2018 but I didn’t know about linking to a kindle device. I’ve just downloaded a kindle book on computer (using an old version of the kindle app because my plugin can’t remove drm from newer books or books downloaded on new app), then dragged and dropped those books into calibre.
I’ll get things set up the way you’ve done it to see if it’ll remove the drm on the new books. I’ll be sure to get the same drm plugin you used.
That’s a nice recliner, btwv
Thanks Dylan! I'm planning on getting the new kobo libra colour so I'm glad there's a way I can transfer my books from my kindle.
Awesome! I think you'll love it! Hope the video will be helpful :)
@@dylancanread The video was helpful. I did have a question though. When you transfer a book from your kindle to your kobo will that book still have all your notes and highlights you've made?
hmm... that's a great question that I'm honestly not sure about. I would think not, but I will have to test it to see for sure!
Thankyou so so much! Extremely useful!
Thank you! I’ve been trying to find the title for Only You for years I saw it once on tv when I was a kid and never got the name I’m going to watch it right now!
Thank you so much!!! This was so helpful and honestly took the headache out of moving from kindle to kobo. I was so worried about losing hundreds of books but so far everything has worked great 😁
Yes - me too. I was instantly regretting buying Kobo - there seemed to be fewer books, and generally more expensive, and that really nasty trick of forcing you to preauthorise payment methods for future purchases. But now I can see that I can still buy books on Amazon and just transfer them. It's a shame that Kobo does that preauthorisation forcing move as I shan't be buying many books from them. Thanks for these tips. My 4 Kindles are long since in the graveyard, but my Amazon account still recognises them.
This is some of the best directions I've found so far! tbh though I still think this is really complicated. I'm hesitant to change ecosystems
Thank you so much! Unfortunately it is a headache to get started, but once you have everything up and running the process is pretty easy. I wish there was an easier way!
Thank you - very helpful for new Kobo converts. Especially configuration of the plugin. In the last step you can upload the epub version to Google Drive or Dropbox on your Kobo.
This was a really useful video! Thank you very much. You pushed me over the edge from my Kindle (I've been reading on a Kindle for 15 years or more) and into a new color Kobo reader. I'm assuming that with the DRM removed that you can highlight and take notes on books? I'm also assuming the Kobo has a dictionary function similar to my Kindle?? Again, thank you for the great video.
Thanks for making this easy! I don't have a kobo yet but the sheer thought of having to do this for 400+ books kept me from really looking into them despite wanting to make the switch. I think I'll start converting some of my library a little at a time so that when I do switch I won't have as much work to do
That's what I'm doing...a little at a time. I have way too many ebooks and not enough time or patience to convert and send them all to my kobo one by one!
a bit of an easier way to load the books all at once is to plug your kindle into your computer and add them straight to calibre from the downloads folder.
thank you man. I just press Like and subscribe for just this helpful video.
also instead of dragging and dropping you can highlight as many books as you want and click send to device~
Thank you! It worked!
Thank you so much for this video! Definitely the easiest directions I've seen for how to do this. One question though, would this also work for ebooks bought from Barnes and Noble (nook books) or would you need to transfer them differently?
Hi Dylan, Thanks for the videos, I'm a fan. I purchased a Kindle reader, when they first came out. I also still have my Kindle DX. I wonder if you have any area where someone can ask an in-depth question, or two. Thanks again! (That chair looks so comfy!)
Thank you!
I've always thought it was pronounced ka-lee-bray -- learn something knew every day.
Haha it may be pronounced that way! I’m honestly not sure
Thank you so much, you just plugged a very stupid hole in what was going wrong with mine. I was downloading books "to" an older Kindle to try and avoid downloading with the newer KFX file type, but I used a different Kindle serial number in my KFX plugin so I kept getting errors. Thank you so much 🤦🏻♀️
Amazon doesn’t put DRM on the books the publisher does. The same for Kobo, books purchased from the Kobo store also have DRM. That’s why books from Baen and TOR are refreshing as they come without DRM. You should fix the disinformation in your video. But you did a good job on explaining how to remove DRM from Kindle books. Using the NoDRM or DeDRM plugins you can also remove DRM from Kobo books. There are also some plugins that allow you to convert your books to Kepub which is Kobo's preferred format.
Great video! Just FYI- I tried to copy and paste my serial number from the Amazon website, but it didn’t work. When I typed it in, though, it worked great!
Please also do a video tutorials for converting Nook ebooks for reading in a Kobo ereader. Thank you.
Thank you for the suggestion!
Hello! First of all thank you for such a step by step comprehensive video I was able to transfer my books! My only question if anyone knows is, like you, my cover is shortened. I noticed the same happened to the book you imported. Is there any way to make sure that doesn't happen? Or to end up with the covers matching the size of the native kobo books?
Thanks so much!
You should use the plug in to convert the file to a Kepub file :)
This definitely works for getting them on my Kobo Libra, but I do have an issue I'm running into.
To start, I don't actually have a kindle so I can't add a serial number to the plug in, yet seemingly it still gets transferred. The issue I have is when actually trying to read the files on my Kobo. Aside from the cover/first page, everything is zoomed in to only show the top left each page, with no option to zoom out, which makes reading manga, or pretty much anything impossible. Would having a kindle serial number fix that, or am I doing something else wrong?
Love your videos
THANK YOU
This is really great news (and very clear instructions). Thanks for this video.
Just a question. Does it also export Kindle highlights, notes, and whatnot?
I don’t believe so, but I could be wrong! I don’t highlight or annotate much so I haven’t transferred any files that contain notes or highlights to test it
@@dylancanread thank you!
Good Job 👍
Thank you so much for this video. I was kind of stressing about getting my purchases on my Kobo Libra Colour from Amazon. My other question was with you converting the book to epub then are you able to use all the features on the kobo like increase/decrease font, change font, annotating etc??
Yes! You are able to do all those things :)
@@dylancanread yes! Thank you again for answering my question. Can’t wait to get my Libra Colour.
Dylan Can Read, Thanks for posting this video
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing this technique. What if the books from kindle was not available for download? I just confronted this issue.
thank-you very much for this video. I'm thinking of leaving the amazon system ( kindle ) due to the proprietary issues on e-books. I have been using Epubor Ultimate to remove the DRM after purchasing books from amazon. Then I can change the file format to whatever I would like. Your dedrm system via calibre is a great idea. I do use calibre as well. So . . . my ultimate question is.
If I want to move my entire kindle library from my kindle oasis ( all categorized in genre's ) can I move that entire collection in bulk from calibre ( which all have DRM removed ) to my new Kobo Clara Color ? If, I choose to leave the amazon eco system. This would be so advantageous knowing that using Kobo I can use any formated book and not just be stuck in the amazon eco system.
Great video. Amazon’s prohibition on bulk downloading is a real pain even when you stay in the Amazon universe. When you buy a new Kindle, you have to separately download each and every title in your library to the new Kindle. That takes forever when you have over 1,000 books. I must admit that I don’t know if this applies to just seeing the title thumbnails in your library on the new Kindle without actually downloading the book because I haven’t done it in years. If someone knows if the title thumbnails appear on the new Kindle without having to download the book please let me know. Also, can someone tell me if maps, book covers, etc. come out any clearer on a Kobo than they do on a Kindle. Thanks.
I honestly think this is why I'd opt for a eink tablet
If you had to choose which would you pick kindle scribe or kobo Libra colour? I can't decide between the two
How can you get the covers to be the correct or same size?
Thanks for a fantastic video!
QUESTION: Once you upload the book to Calibre, can you delete it from your Mac Downloads folder??
What if you dont have a kindle but use the kindle app?
Hi. Thanks for the video!. Did you tried to remove the DRM from kobo books too? so you can read your books bought on kobo store on your kindles? My sole objective is to have all my legally purchased e-books free to read them on any device.. thanks again!
@dylancanread Have you been able to add multiple libraries to the overdrive on the kobo libra color?
Hi Dylan, thank you for the video. I just picked up a Clara Colour and was hoping to port the Kindle Books I had over but I don't own a physical Kindle (no serial). Just a bunch of books and audiobooks. Is there any workaround you're aware of for that?
Thanks,
J
This is a great video. One of the things stopping me from getting the Kobo Libra Color is the ability to get highlights and notes. It's so easy to do on a kindle. Do you have any tips of how to do this for Kobo?
I think the easiest way to export notes (and I think hi lights) would be via Dropbox or google drive which are both built in on this device!
Thanks for the great tutorial. Got most of my Kindle downloaded to the Calibre library. I do have some books that were provided to me as an Advance Reader Team and were downloaded directly to my Kindle, and appear as "Docs" in my Amazon Content. Is there a method to get these items transferred to the Calibre library? They do not have an option to download via USB.
Hmmm - Do you think I could tweak this for a similar process of reading a kobo book on a kindle? My local independent bookstore sells ebooks but they say (Kobo ebook) next to the title so I have always been worried that I wouldn't be able to read them on my kindle. Would love to support my local bookshop with ebook purchases!
Thank you so much, Dylan 😊 would you happen to know if doing this voids the warranty I purchased for a new Kobo? I’m assuming not but was just curious.
Great question! I would think not, as Kobo supports multiple file types, but I can’t say for sure
Fantastic. I thought nothing in calibre was working to dedrm Kindle books?
You should be able to do it without a physical Kindle as well by using the Kindle app and picking the option "Kindle for Mac/PC ebooks" instead of Kindle serial number!
Do you know how to get the keyfile that it is asking for?
I was originally going to go about it this way but I kept running in to problems and couldn’t get it to work. I’m sure that was user error, but the process seemed more complicated to me
It doesn't work (as well) any more, several problems makes it a non-option at least for recent books.
Unfortunately I don't have a computer so I guess I'm out of luck on this but I would like to find out about the chair even though it's more expensive I just like to look at it
Could you show how to upload the Kindle android app books to calibre?
Great tutorial, thanks! Even if you bought the ebook, unfortunately the United States' DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent ANY form of copy protection (DRM) even for personal use. You can buy 100 copies of an eBook, but if you circumvent DRM on books you bought, it is illegal in the United States according to the DMCA. Even for only your own personal use.
Instead of dragging the book to there kobo folder, I think you can just press the “Send to Device” button on the toolbar.
Is there a way to do this when you have the Kindle app on your iPad? I do not want to buy a Kindle ereader because I already have a Kobo, but I do enjoy KU more because of the English books they offer
So I was able to do this on a windows laptop just fine I believe but I just bought a Mac today am I am trying to do it and everytime I am going to the customize plug in section to put in the serial number it is force closing the application. Anyone have any idea why?
I'm so curious if you'll try the colour Kindle that is rumoured to be coming out (next year?)
If Amazon releases a kindle color I will certainly be testing it out! I'm sure it's only a matter of time!
Does this only work for the us version of Amazon because I don’t have the option to download via usb
what if you dont have a kindle? i got a onyx boox leaf 2 which just broke so im thinking about getting something from kobo, on my leaf 2 i could download apps from the play store so I had the kindle app installed… do i need to have a kindle to do this?
This video is amazing, especially for someone like me who isn't so tech-savvy. Can someone walk me through how to move my whole kindle library to the kobo at once? I have about 2,000 books so far and this process is wonderful but would take me forever!
Can you do this without having the kindle device? I have books bought only to my kindle apps on my phone, but I want to buy a kobo e reader
Do I have to own a Kindle ereader to do it or will the kindle app on my mobile be enough? I own a Kobo Libra 2.
thanks for the indepth tutorial! however my calibre app just keeps closing at the part 6:30 where you say to add the old kindle in :(
Hey there! It may be that you need to update Calibre! There should be an option to do this from within the application (I had a little button at the bottom right of the screen) but if not, you should be able to find the newest version via a google search.
Hi Dylan. Thanks for your tutorials. I have followed the steps, but am experiencing a problem. Calibre7.12 will not accept the DeDRM plugin. Any ideas. Cheers.
Is there any way to do this without having a kindle? I have a kobo (that I love) but some books aren't available on the kobo store unfortunately that I'd like to read. I've never had a kindle though
Anybody else able to transfer their books, but once they're on Kobo the text formatting is messed up? The covers all looked find, but once I open them there's like 6 words on each page and they're vertical.... :(
I did two books. When I tried to do a few more it wouldn’t show up in my downloads and I’m unsure why not
Will this also work if I have been reading Kindle books in my iPad and don’t own a Kindle?
I only have Android tablets. Is this process possible with an Android tablet? Alternatively, what about with a Chrome Book?
So, it looks like you can only do this if youve had a Kindle previously? Like, if I've been reading on my phone, there wont be a device #?
@13:10 - I have the Kindle App on my computer and I can download my library...
I can also find the folder where my Kindle saves those books. Can you use those files? Would you need an actual Kindle Device is you went this rout?
