[BLACKSMITH] Epic Door Build for the Forge!

  • If there was one thing the forge needed it was a door and think I really pushed the boat out on this on! I recently up-grad the gas forge in the workshop and well I think this is quite the up-grad. Join me as I show you how I made the portcullis style door for the forge. With the help of UK Knife maker Supplies I was able to build this epic gas forge. A massive thank you to Toby. This forge should be able to keep up with most of my needs in the workshop with its large capacity and excellent isolation. It's also assisted by the Gameco 1inch gas burner formally sold by Alec Steele. Which is more than man enough to supply me with the heat I should need to make large orders and multi runs of objects in the hundreds.

    Great job Dan it really sounds like a good deal.This may be my next forge, it looks like it wouldn't be hard to convert it to a ribbon burner also

    Great video. Honestly, I’m glad to see I’m not the only drawer guy. I have gobs of drawers and dig thru ten of them before I remember that what I’m looking for is sitting on a shelf. Another great video, Dan. Thank you.

    Hi Dan, I see you are a true builder, you have the tools and all kinds of stuff at hand. Now add a vision and a gas forge is born, nice job. Don't worry about the engineering changes in the middle of the job, that is what makes the engineer look good. 👍⚒

    Very nice forge design! I'm building one that's very similar because I wanted to a forge that had more width than length. Your portcullis door is wonderful and I just might have to borrow the idea!

    Dan, did you consider extending the chain down the back of the forge and underneath to a foot pedal? You could leave the hand ratchet in place too🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐

      I did but the forge doesn't really have a fixed he so it moves around a lot. If and when it does find a home I might do this. Also a pneumatic or electronic switch might work? It's some thing I'm thinking about.

    Nice addition to the forge but would it not work better if it was foot actuated? So if both hands are full with the work piece you can sill open and close the door. Just a thought. But it looks to work great as is, and after seeing the ratchet in action I think you have the right design.

    Thinking about this for a minute. Dan. Maybe you could save some money (i take it you want to enter production of these forges) by replacing the sprocket with a winch drum consisting of some plasma cut bits and bobs and a piece of black pipe. The Chain is screwed to the rotating bit, the force is tiny compared to the TONS that chain and sprocket can transmit. I see zero reason for the sprocket. Since it does not even make a full turn, it does not even need to be a drum, a flat bar bent into somethign like a sextant looking sector geometry welded to the shaft would probably work too.....that could even allow non-linear response. Slow adjust of furnace mouth, then quick full open - if you give it a variable outer radius.

      I'm definitely on the same page however I don't have any faith in cables. They seem to cause issues on top end forges all the time. Also the sprocket, taper lock and chain cost less than £5 which isn't really that much. But this is definitely not the way I would go if this was a product ion options. Thanks for the feed back.

      @@danielmoss2089 No need to use cable. You can just screw the chain to whatever geometry that does the lifting. But yeah, you are right. 5 pounds for ALL of that. You got a good supplier ! My gut feel was more along the lines of 30€ or more - enough to warrant getting rid of it all.

    Awesome job! Do you got a Plan for a Forge, wich is able to handle a " Landsknecht - Schwert "? Well i'm talking about 1,80 m blade plus Tang.

      I was talking to a blade smith the other day and he said that for forging purposes a small gas forge the blade can pass through is much better. more like a solid fuel forge. heating the whole blade is just wasteful. Unless your talking about heat treating the blade and well thats slightly different.
      If you want a crazy long forge well im happy to make.

      @@danielmoss2089 I'm from Essen in Germany. Wich is pretty close to Solingen, if you know what i mean. Most of the times, i do Daggers and Swords over here. currently working with Coal forges.
