    We need more people, like the FAA, to educate people about rod end bearings. I meet more than a few that think the bolts should NOT be tight!?!? 😮

    I used rod ends in making formula student cars and every time I purchase these online, I always wondered where they would be used in airplanes; as the seller advertised their products are widely used in aerospace vehicles. Thank you for the great information :) Aaand.. it was Aurora Bearings too lol

    When using the washer as advised, check that it doesn't interfere with the radial movement needed by the bearing.

    Thanks for the great information. I looked and looked for these and could only find the solid gold ones with diamond 💎 bearings anyway that's must have been what they were made of for the price they wanted! Then I went to McMaster and found them at a reasonable price. Thanks again.

    Amazing video. Pretty well explained and you speak so clearly that's very easy to understand. Wish you good flights from Brazil.

    Great information, thank you. I wonder about the use of a large washer though. Won't it impede the angular movement of the bearing? In the Aurora catalog it shows an angular change of about 20 degrees; I could imaging a large washer hitting the body to reduce that movement to less than 20 degrees. Also, I recall using rod end bearing in a race car where a small diameter, thick washer that just covers the flat on the bearing is first used, then a larger washer on top of that.

    Mc master - carr usually has everything.. but they are a tad pricey.. they have great service.. u may be able to find washers with the correct od so there is no binding interference.

    Here's another vote for McMaster-Carr.
    Is it typical to use a right and left thread on these so you can use them like turnbuckles to fine-adjust their length?

    Exellent video! What is the difference between right rod end and left rod end?

    • @HomebuiltHELP
      @HomebuiltHELP  6 лет назад

      I believe that refers to the threads.. right handed threads are the norm, left-handed threads require opposite rotation.

    I don't understand: McMaster-Carr products are NOT FAA approved. How is it legal to use them and how do you know they will not fail in the air?

    • @HomebuiltHELP

      Parts in an experimental aircraft do not need to be FAA approved. And I do not know if it or any other part will fail in the air! Please, Clyde, learn about the wonderful world of experimental aviation - use google.

    Can lock washers be used with the jam nut?

    • @ctsteve1967
      @ctsteve1967 4 года назад

      should not be used. Remember a lock washer is a washer that is already broken. If you by any chance over tighten a lock washer it will open up.
      I do not recommencement lock washer at all. Also a lock washer can only be used once. When it comes to washer use Grade 8 Washers.

    I know of a scratch built Rv3 that had a rod end fail in flight that ended with a successful landing, the rod end was not mil grade rather a cheap one from a Harbour freight type retailer.

    • @ctsteve1967

      then you said it all. DO not use Harbor Freight for anything on your aircraft. NOTHING.

      Do you mean Mil Spec If you purchase a Mil Spec rod end it will cost you over 200.00 each even for a small rod end. I bet you spent a Dollar for your rod end, Spend about 20$ each for rod ends. you will not be sorry
