Great interview Brian. I was glad when Matt got the Zenith 701 and it's good to see someone actually using the ZD engine. Seems to be mostly haters regarding these engines in the US. from what I've seen from Matt, he's had less problems than people with the equivalent Rotax. Have u got your engine mounted yet? Last I saw u were working on the wings.
OK, I finally found Matt on Google Maps. I have been looking months and he said New Brunswick, and yeah,, I finally see the airport, river etc that I have been watching for months. I've watched a good number of mmatt's videos. Down-to-earth guy who comes across as very natural on camera. Easy to watch because he's more about good content for aviation enthusiasts with none of the self-centered, narcissistic garbage that's become all too common on some flying channels.
Yep! 15 minutes is about right for the Rotax 912, and I’m in FLORIDA!!! I’ve tinkered with putting tape over part of my oil cooler to warm it up faster. On the flip side, it doesn’t overheat…😂
Very cool video. Could you please provide information about this engine dealer? I am just in process of building my 701 and this could be great option for me. Thanks!

I did choose a Franklin Engine for mine correct. I had a custom one built. But decided to sell it to a Franklin Fan due to it was heavier than originally thought/read/told and less supported than I thought. So... I went with the lightest and simplistic option. A Rotax.
Hi Matt, you are indicating in this interview that you bought this engine for one third of the price of a Rotax. How much did you pay for the ZD C100 ? Thanks.
Lacking the slats did not mean the original builder were not interested in STOL, I noticed they did added the rows of VGs. The lack of slats will likely get the lane about 5 MPH faster. The main purpose of the slats are to grow hair on the pilot's chest. But then , choosing a 2200 sealed its fate as to performance, with 15 HP less and the wrong RPM. I never heard of ZD before and have to check them out, my choice for the 750 I am building was always Aero Momentum, with 17 more HP and a reduction box. I live less than 100 miles south of the Zenith factory in YYZ. Rotax is too expensive for me, and Edge is worse, for I have to buy a Rotax first (or they do) and then add the modification cost. One problem with ZD is the carburator, I thought that is a relic of last century and I never buy a Rotax with the carbs. I am aware Edge have an injection modification kits for Rotax.
Hi Matt, you are saying in your interview that you payed the SongShen motor only one third of the Rotax engine. That seems incredible. How much did you pay for it ? Thanks.
Somebody should talk ZD into building a half “912”, a 2 cylinder. If they could get half the weight and half the power they’d sell a ton of them and they’d have something Rotax doesn’t have
Many years ago my Dad told me that IFR in the 1930s meant "I fly rails." They would follow the railroad tracks and get their location from the names of the towns on the water towers.
There is no phase of any flight where you can’t get back on the ground! May not walk away but I guarantee it will be back on the ground…I think he meant back to the airport runway!
I don’t know. There has long been a story of some Russian Astronauts who went out and kept on going when things went wrong lol. Of course we know if that did in-fact happen the Rooskies would tell everyone all about it.

Interesting video but ZD engines are garbage manufactured of the lowest quality Chinese parts. Upgrading to the Jabiru 3300 or adding a turbo to the 2200 would have been less expensive, more fuel efficient and given you a much longer TBO interval.

So now a test pilot too.
45 mph to qualify as ultralight in Canada or 45 knots?

In Australia the Jabiru engine is also known as the Bundaberg hand grenade . This Chinese engine couldn’t be any worse .
I'm told the Generation IV version of the Jabiru is much improved.
That said, I also recall being told there was nothing wrong with a Generation III Jabiru engine if it was maintained properly.
