It seems to me that the hyena bomber suffered from gross underproduction and bad tactics. It doesn't seem like the design was bad, but it definitely wasn't used well.
@@jpshy1130 well, they cripple a venator with just 3 hyenas in a single run, they completely destroy a villagge in a simgle run, they bomb AT-TEs, they cripple the defenses on Christophsis and even desable obi-wans fleet when he faces grievous. Also in a book they destroy the outbound flight.
A vulture is a scavenging bird of prey. A hyena is a scavenging terrestrial carnivore that has the jaw strength to even take on apex predators. Pretty sure the Star Wars Galaxy has enough planets/species to match those niches.
The Hyena Droids are also barely armored, you could see many blind spots when they are in their walking mode, however to counter that while also maintaining the droid price cheaper, they made the droid cockpit area thin mixed with the fact that the droid is fairly fast. Pretty smart if you ask me. If you think about it, it's better than being bulky and heavily armored, because they'll be more likely to get hit.
Not to mention even if they do get hit so long as they can still fly into there target it doesn't matter. And you don't need to feel guilty for loosing a ship as no one was in it.
That´s also the main problem: As easy as they could get hit, the Y-Wing could tank enough damage to still reach it´s target and cause effective damage or even outright destroy it, with the Hyena bomber, being as fragile as it was, the damage a squadron of those could inflict would not be nearly enough, not to mention they would get instantly wiped out before they could make another run, which is another great advantage the Y-Wing has
If it wasn't for the plot armor of the Republic those hyena bombers would have made minced meat out of the clones. On the other hands the tactical capability of the Y-wings is unmatched, one of the reasons why the rebel alliance loved them so much, hit and run attacks for the win.
I agree the hyena was a super effective bomber and was used fairly effectively. Had palpatine not been playing second fiddle behind the scenes these things would have done wonders.
@@gabrieltejada1697 limited means nothing, bombers are deployed once the air has been cleared and there is space for them to do their job, every scene we saw more or less show just how scary they were when just 3 with no casualties bomb and cripple a venator, essentially desabling it, ten of them or less destroy an entire village and a few of them take out the outbound flight. The lited paramaters means that they are bad in dogfights, which a bomber shouldn't partake in to begin with and Y-wings would often get decimated in those as well as we often saw, too slow and unmanouverable to dodge incoming fire.
Well think about it, SW is made just for the good guys win. If not mistaken there were so many chances that droids could win and also they never used all the full power. Even tanks, Gunship and such had other extra guns but never used lol.
I think the limited availability of the Hyena bomber really hurt its chances. Perhaps if the CIS had built enough bombers to deploy them in swarm tactics like the Vulture, it would’ve mitigated its myriad of weaknesses. On a separate note, I really can’t wait to see your video comparing the Republic and CIS’s choices of interceptors: The V-19 Torrent & V-Wing Vs. the Droid Tri-Fighter.
The Y-Bombers were so good that even the Rebel Alliance and later the New Republic did even everything in their power to keep these impressive bombers, and their track record was absolutely impressive during the Clone Wars that they were the only star fighters to stay within the Republic Navy only replace during the time of the Empire.
In fairness most of the time that were the case but we see many of the major battles & skirmishes where the rebel alliance chose to deploy their best and most well equipped units
The hyenas were far superior in terms of their capabilities such as the lack of a crew allows for much tighter turns, they’re cheaper and more expendable which is ideal against capital ships, plus they’re more easier to store than Y-wings, however they are much slower in their reaction time as well as lower situational and strategic awareness as well as the fact that the Y-wing has a rear gunner, and the clones have a much better handling of the bomber
It was certainly the most well rounded of bombers as you didn't need a dedicated wing of support craft to escort it to its target and screen off enemy fighters and being good enough to be deployed as a screen and bomber makes it worth the price.
I'd say that is true, but in reality they are only because things such as Hyenas fell out of production during the civil war and Tie bombers were slow. People often forgets how easily the y-wing was preyed upon by literally every other fighter craft such as tie interceptors, tri-droid interceptors and even vulture droids.
Hey, do Hyperspace coordinates change every year in the Star Wars universe due to the galaxy moving? Does this mean the hyperspace lanes continually change too so coordinates need to be updated?
Yes... though how much time needs to be spent recalculating depends on how frequently a given jump is performed as well as how far you're going. A relatively short hop on a major hyperlane is the easiest to calculate, while a journey from planets in the middle of nowhere on opposite ends of the galaxy is the hardest. In one of the early New Jedi Order books, we see a tactical briefing that shows how the jump distances between worlds are constantly changing because all bodies in the galaxy are in constant motion
The hyper lanes are also called the hyper lanes because they are areas in the galaxy with the least amount of stuff passing through it and therefore the most consistent trails of you will

I feel like the idea that the clones are so much better than the battle droids is total propoganda, they absolutely failed to meet their "worth 10 of the enemy" tagline.
I think that policy of prioritizing the Hyena Bombers was what did them in. I'm sure a similar policy on the part of the Separatists would have had a similar effect on the Y-Wing's effectiveness (though this assumes they don't already.) I could imagine Y-Wings being in a rough spot if Vultures were making suicidal charges on them, even going as far as ramming them if they got close enough.
Also vulture and hyena star craft are incredibly cheaper to produce. Imagine if the same budget was thrown into the hyena. Shields, better armor, more advanced AI systems. It's actually scary if you think about it. I suppose that could be said about the Droid army as a whole

Sadly I can’t think of an bomber in the C.I.S. Arsenal that could be considered effective. There’s the Bomber Droid that looks like a bulky Vulture Droid, and the Hex Bomber, but those were considered “target practice” by other pilots.
I think that Y wings were great but I think overall hyenas with an escort are pretty impossible to defeat because there can be so many. However plot armor does prevail of course
Geetsly's, are you that the reason why the Hyena bombers failed to live up to their true potentials have nothing to do with plot armor that always protect the Republic? Because at the end of the day, the producing crew needed to make the Separatists lost somehow.
The hyena was to versatile for a dedicated bomber but to heavily armed to fill the middle ground. It's like an X-Wing that trades defence and agility for heavier weapons. Not a good design. That the republics "shoot on sight" order worked so well says they weren't escorted well enough.
I think calling Y-wing's 'Bombers' sometimes misses out on their 'attack plane' potentials. My favorite thing do do in X-wing Alliance especially against ISDs was to load em up with advanced missiles, throw most of em at incoming fighter screen, and cut and thrust my way through what wasn't too busy avoiding death from those and my side, to hammer down their deflector emitters, primarily with ions. The challenge got such that it was more about how many allies survived than the near inevitability of taking out the ISD. :) But timing it right so enemy interceptors are dealing with your missiles and your fighter cover at the same time is pretty darn effective compared to hoping to survive attrition with a 'bombey' payload. Cause ions. :)
Y-Wing. Though it's as slow as an inebriated Hutt (not entirely true), it sure held its own so many years after the Clone Wars ended... heard some of them ended up fighting on the legendary Battle of Yuuzhan'tar. With this in mind, the Hyena and its contemporaries sure were easily forgotten and discarded. Make of that what you will.

The Temple Gaurds would have given a Fair fight or atleast Stand Strong against the Clones and a single Sith lord . They would have been Skilled and Powerful ones , having knowledge of the Temple Defenses , And Atleast of the Least hopes , they would have protected the Jedi Temple till Yoda and Obi wan arrived right! And then soon followed Bail Organa , To Support the Jedi cause and Fail palpatines plans
I want them to have made a stealth bomber version of they hyena then we can say screw your shoot on sight because you would need to see it. They could always just have a radar clock not an actual clock as well but that would be amazing to see as well because they could be released after a vulture attack and they would be none the wiser but maybe over budget a bit. Imagine your a new recruite ship captain or whatever then you spot 3 sep ships near a moon and along you and your 2 other captins in their own ships launch fighers and bombers to take down the vulture droids they just launched and the regular hyena and you think you won. What you don't realise after your bombers destroyed their forward ship is that the rear ships deployed the stealth hyena bombers (idk someone think of a name for them im thinking Eagle or cheetah but that seems crap like maybe raven (stealth) bombers would be cool name) but anyway you don't know that they are approaching one of your other ships until KABOOM right down the middle of the ship all the way from the open hanger doors that are letting the last few Y wing bombers and other starfighters into the hanger ready to quick rearm if needed or start repairing some explodes killing half the clones inside as well as the bridge where your fellow captain was congratulating his crew and planing the next attack on the ship now has a small craterouse chunk taken out of it. What you think happened was it was just some regular hyena bombers you missed but you failed to notice the black hyena bomber that just clocked and is heading back to rearm.
As much as I agree with the Hyena Bombers would have been better with a better AI, nothing can beat a human mind who has years of experience. Also I loved the Y-Wing as a Bomber. In my opinion, I liked the Y-wing over most Bombers anyway because of their reliability and overall performance. That is, at least my opinion.
Another good example that the Y-wing was superior to the Hyena is that one continued to see frequent use before, during, and well after the Clone Wars, whereas the other quickly disappeared after the war's end.
Im sorry but a bomber that can transform into a 5 meter tall killing machine and impale clone troopers, while also having a droid brain which is able to nearly perfectly calculate any move almost as good as the tri fighter and is cheap to produce in high numbers, The CIS remains underrated, they wouldve actually slain the Galaxy if it wasnt for sith control
Hyena Bomber do not need hyperdrive they are in battles to destroy or be destroyed so that is not minus. Those Hyena Bomber and tri-droid fighter has come to late in war. Confederacy was started war to early, if they started the war a little later they would have better fighers, better land droids and better ships (less munificent and more providence, recusant and lucrehulks)
Another pro for the hyenas is the fact that as they are droids, you could make them an effective kamikaze. If a single fighter managed to damage the bridge of a Venetor, almost killing Yularen, then imagine what one armed with primed explosives could have done. I think a combination of their limited numbers, poor usage by their commanders and the Republics prioritisation did them in
You know what annoys me? the way Anakin drove his Y-wings RIGHT INTO THE PROW TURBOLASER BATTERIES of the Malevolence, getting most of the W-wings shot down for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. he lost somthing like 20 ships becasue he chose to DAMN THE TORPEDOES rather than be a bit more careful choosing the attack vector.
Y wing been my fav since before prequels existed, but Hyena was done dirty by so much plot armour/only assume Palpy doing his best to make sure weren’t produced enough. They’re cool ship.
Great vid! Altough, I would mention the price of these things: a BTL-B Y-wing was supposedly considerably more exxpensive than a Hyena bomber, and over the course of a war, the scale of the deployment of these vechicles could be game changing. With that said, i still agree that the Y-wing was not only a supririor design, but overall a better addittion to the associated faction's war machines
The Y-wing had a strong payload and decent starfighter capabilities. It was decently fast and its rear gunner helped to increase the ship's survivability. That hyperdrive let it go on independent strike missions ahead of or without a capital ship. The hyena was far faster, cheaper, lighter, and more agile. It could function far better in starfighter combat and had a pretty good payload. The genius feature of the hyena was its kamikaze missions. The entire ship could crash into a target without much loss to the CIS, unlike the Y-wing with its expensive pilot. A single Y-wing was better in certain missions, but the CIS could field far more hyenas in general. I'd say they're about equal.
For me , The Y-Wing is definitely the best. Mainly because not only did it excel in the field it was designed for, but it also excelled in fields it technically wasn't designed for. Meanwhile, the Hyena Bomber was designed for multiple fields, but failed every one of them. Outside of civilian targets, the Hyenas weren't very effective. In fact, the Y-Wing wouldn't be handed a major defeat until the battle of Yavin, where a whole squadron was shot down by Darth Vader and two TIE Pilots. But that was due to the skill of the enemy pilots, not 100% design flaws of the Y-Wings.
I've been doing a lot of research on these two ships because I like to analyze how things would function in game design, and I don't think Battlefront's Starfighter Assault mode did either of these ships justice. They aren't designed to be symmetrical to one another. The Hyena doesn't have that 360 degree turret or a shield generator. In a one-on-one fight the Y-Wing would likely come out on top every single time. I think the only way the two could really fit would be if the gamemode was designed asymmetrically. Vultures would be faster than Y-Wings but more fragile, especially without any shielding.
It seems as though the hyena is similar to the real world Japanese Mitsubishi A6M series of fights known to everyone but the Japanese themselves as the Zero. The Zero was a fighter that at first glance was devastatingly effective in reality while the design worked well when developed in the 30s and it earned a partially deserved reputation (mostly in the very early war against China where they mostly fought already obsolete aircraft many from WW1) it quickly became realized that the aircraft was a glass cannon whose cannon was no where near as powerful as first assumed. It had weak guns with little ammunition and due to the designers demand for speed and agile maneuverability at all costs had no armor was seriously underpowered and had a very low wing load capability meaning it could carry no more than 275 pounds of bombs. The only advantage it has was its insane agility and maneuverability in close twisting dogfights. Because of its ability to basicly turn on a dime it was incredibly dangerous. However even when fighting in its element it was more at risk than most aircraft due to its inability to take ANY kind of hit where its main opponents throughout the war the American F4-F Wildcat F6-F Hellcat and the P-40 Warhawk could take much more damage and required most of an A6Ms ammunition to bring down. And in the case of both the Wildcat and Hellcat they were in their original varients almost as agile and in later varients were actually more agile than their A6M counterparts. So the A6Ms advantages shown in the beginning of the war were quickly nullified. It seems as the Star Wars Hyena is much the same.
Imagine the battle of Kamino hadn’t had the objective to retrieve Jango Fett‘s DNA from Kamino. This would have been such a playfield for hyena bombers, even if it were just plain suicide missions, like crashing with their bombing bay fully loaded with explosives either into holes being penetrated into the outside structure of Tipoca City, through its huge hangar doors to inflict heavy damage to the internal structure and kill as many clones as possible or target the columns, which it was build on.
Here's what answers the "which one is better" for me: the fact that a squadron of hyena bombers can be taken out by a friggin *gunship*. Sure, gunships have armaments that can aim basically all around them, but these aren't the most powerful armaments in the republic and gunships are extremely far from the most manuverable ship a clone pilot could hope to fly. Edit: the same goes for the battle with the scout fighter.
The cost to effectiveness ratio is not to be ignored. Hynena bombers are staggeringly cheaper than a Y wing and even if several are lost in a bombing run, they still come out ahead of the Y wing. It's greatest flaw is republic plot armour.
As good as they were the Y-Wing was still very vulnerable to attacks. Even with the second seat being manned by a gunner. They were not as able to defend themselves as well as other ships could. If they had an escort it was a matter of fact for them to take down an ISD. But without it... well you lost an entire squad.
I feel like often times, the hyena bombers losses are caused by encountering "hero" skill level enemies. Jedi pilots wrecking whole squads is not really a fair test of their abilities. Combine that with the fact that the CIS rarely ever screened their bombing runs with waves of normal vulture droids, and you have a recipe for disaster with a vessel that otherwise could have been absolutely devastating in its effect
No wonder the rebel alliance used Y-wings since most of the rebel leaders fought during the clone wars or saw the war when they grew up and probably were impressed by whay the Y-wings did and wanted to use these ships to fight the empire until the B-wing replaced the Y-wing years after the clone wars
if I was a commander, I'd still take the hyena, for its sheer damage output, and speed to out run most things trying to shoot it down I don't think the battle record is really fair to look at in the clone wars show, cause of course the Jedi, republic and clones are going to win most battle and shoot them down, its bad in the show for meta reasons since the good guys have to win. It'd be like saying the Hyena is bad because the CIS lost the war, or caused it to lose.
With them being able to store the vulture and hyena droids on the top leaving their hangars basically empty they should have had all the best non droid separatist pilots flying top of the line fighters and bombers assigned to say grievous and dookus ships, and purely used them like special forces having them ignore everything the vulture droids would go after and only target critical systems and engage Jedi craft, I know they did have non droids in the military but they should have used them more lol
I wonder how the Hyena Bomber compares to the other Separatist bombers they have utilized like the Trade Federation Droid Bomber or the Commerce Guild Bombers?
What I wonder is, where do these... thin/slick spacecraft (Y wing, B wing, Hienna) fit their payload? It bothers me that these are thinner than some fighters, yet carry all of this bombs inside somehow, or have an incredibly small capacity.
if the hyena bomber was so good, why dind't they win? I mean, theymade enough of them right? Not to mention that you are supposed to chain rows or lines of bombs on to of eachoter to drill through the armor
BTW, fighting against BTL-B Y-Wings on the TIE Fighter Total Conversion Mod for X-Wing Alliance Upgrade sure is surprisingly hard. As if fighting Escort Shuttles wasn't hard enough.
The Y-wing have the benefit of having a rear gunner. While the Hyena would require escorts but separatists leaders rarely gave them any. I would say as a pure bomber with escorts Hyena since they’re cheaper then the Y-wings and a squad would most likely consists of more Hyena.

In 2005 BF2, the Y-Wing is an absolute beast in dogfights… mainly because of the rear gunner

Yes... though how much time needs to be spent recalculating depends on how frequently a given jump is performed as well as how far you're going. A relatively short hop on a major hyperlane is the easiest to calculate, while a journey from planets in the middle of nowhere on opposite ends of the galaxy is the hardest. In one of the early New Jedi Order books, we see a tactical briefing that shows how the jump distances between worlds are constantly changing because all bodies in the galaxy are in constant motion

Depends to what degree and usually star wars starfighters aren't that devastating. There are alot more powerful kind of craft out there like Halo fighters.

I think that policy of prioritizing the Hyena Bombers was what did them in. I'm sure a similar policy on the part of the Separatists would have had a similar effect on the Y-Wing's effectiveness (though this assumes they don't already.) I could imagine Y-Wings being in a rough spot if Vultures were making suicidal charges on them, even going as far as ramming them if they got close enough.

Also vulture and hyena star craft are incredibly cheaper to produce. Imagine if the same budget was thrown into the hyena. Shields, better armor, more advanced AI systems. It's actually scary if you think about it. I suppose that could be said about the Droid army as a whole

Sadly I can’t think of an bomber in the C.I.S. Arsenal that could be considered effective. There’s the Bomber Droid that looks like a bulky Vulture Droid, and the Hex Bomber, but those were considered “target practice” by other pilots.
I like both iterations of the Y-wing. It’s a neat ship.
I think that Y wings were great but I think overall hyenas with an escort are pretty impossible to defeat because there can be so many. However plot armor does prevail of course
Geetsly's, are you that the reason why the Hyena bombers failed to live up to their true potentials have nothing to do with plot armor that always protect the Republic? Because at the end of the day, the producing crew needed to make the Separatists lost somehow.
The hyena was to versatile for a dedicated bomber but to heavily armed to fill the middle ground. It's like an X-Wing that trades defence and agility for heavier weapons. Not a good design. That the republics "shoot on sight" order worked so well says they weren't escorted well enough.
I think calling Y-wing's 'Bombers' sometimes misses out on their 'attack plane' potentials. My favorite thing do do in X-wing Alliance especially against ISDs was to load em up with advanced missiles, throw most of em at incoming fighter screen, and cut and thrust my way through what wasn't too busy avoiding death from those and my side, to hammer down their deflector emitters, primarily with ions. The challenge got such that it was more about how many allies survived than the near inevitability of taking out the ISD. :) But timing it right so enemy interceptors are dealing with your missiles and your fighter cover at the same time is pretty darn effective compared to hoping to survive attrition with a 'bombey' payload. Cause ions. :)
Y-Wing. Though it's as slow as an inebriated Hutt (not entirely true), it sure held its own so many years after the Clone Wars ended... heard some of them ended up fighting on the legendary Battle of Yuuzhan'tar.
With this in mind, the Hyena and its contemporaries sure were easily forgotten and discarded. Make of that what you will.

I want them to have made a stealth bomber version of they hyena then we can say screw your shoot on sight because you would need to see it. They could always just have a radar clock not an actual clock as well but that would be amazing to see as well because they could be released after a vulture attack and they would be none the wiser but maybe over budget a bit.
Imagine your a new recruite ship captain or whatever then you spot 3 sep ships near a moon and along you and your 2 other captins in their own ships launch fighers and bombers to take down the vulture droids they just launched and the regular hyena and you think you won. What you don't realise after your bombers destroyed their forward ship is that the rear ships deployed the stealth hyena bombers (idk someone think of a name for them im thinking Eagle or cheetah but that seems crap like maybe raven (stealth) bombers would be cool name) but anyway you don't know that they are approaching one of your other ships until KABOOM right down the middle of the ship all the way from the open hanger doors that are letting the last few Y wing bombers and other starfighters into the hanger ready to quick rearm if needed or start repairing some explodes killing half the clones inside as well as the bridge where your fellow captain was congratulating his crew and planing the next attack on the ship now has a small craterouse chunk taken out of it. What you think happened was it was just some regular hyena bombers you missed but you failed to notice the black hyena bomber that just clocked and is heading back to rearm.

As much as I agree with the Hyena Bombers would have been better with a better AI, nothing can beat a human mind who has years of experience. Also I loved the Y-Wing as a Bomber. In my opinion, I liked the Y-wing over most Bombers anyway because of their reliability and overall performance. That is, at least my opinion.

I would take the BTA-NR2 Y-wing due to its integration of the latest technology.

I would also take the resistance B-wing.
The biggest question is why the CIS never included the biggest and objectively coolest of scavengers, the Tyrannosaurus.
Another good example that the Y-wing was superior to the Hyena is that one continued to see frequent use before, during, and well after the Clone Wars, whereas the other quickly disappeared after the war's end.
Im sorry but a bomber that can transform into a 5 meter tall killing machine and impale clone troopers, while also having a droid brain which is able to nearly perfectly calculate any move almost as good as the tri fighter and is cheap to produce in high numbers,

Those Hyena Bomber and tri-droid fighter has come to late in war.
Confederacy was started war to early, if they started the war a little later they would have better fighers, better land droids and better ships (less munificent and more providence, recusant and lucrehulks)

Another pro for the hyenas is the fact that as they are droids, you could make them an effective kamikaze. If a single fighter managed to damage the bridge of a Venetor, almost killing Yularen, then imagine what one armed with primed explosives could have done. I think a combination of their limited numbers, poor usage by their commanders and the Republics prioritisation did them in

You know what annoys me? the way Anakin drove his Y-wings RIGHT INTO THE PROW TURBOLASER BATTERIES of the Malevolence, getting most of the W-wings shot down for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. he lost somthing like 20 ships becasue he chose to DAMN THE TORPEDOES rather than be a bit more careful choosing the attack vector.
Y wing been my fav since before prequels existed, but Hyena was done dirty by so much plot armour/only assume Palpy doing his best to make sure weren’t produced enough. They’re cool ship.

Altough, I would mention the price of these things: a BTL-B Y-wing was supposedly considerably more exxpensive than a Hyena bomber, and over the course of a war, the scale of the deployment of these vechicles could be game changing.
With that said, i still agree that the Y-wing was not only a supririor design, but overall a better addittion to the associated faction's war machines
I mean, the Republic did have some pretty strong plot armor throughout the Clone Wars. It would make sense for the Y-Wing to have more victories.

The Y-wing had a strong payload and decent starfighter capabilities. It was decently fast and its rear gunner helped to increase the ship's survivability. That hyperdrive let it go on independent strike missions ahead of or without a capital ship. The hyena was far faster, cheaper, lighter, and more agile. It could function far better in starfighter combat and had a pretty good payload. The genius feature of the hyena was its kamikaze missions. The entire ship could crash into a target without much loss to the CIS, unlike the Y-wing with its expensive pilot. A single Y-wing was better in certain missions, but the CIS could field far more hyenas in general. I'd say they're about equal.
For me , The Y-Wing is definitely the best.
Mainly because not only did it excel in the field it was designed for, but it also excelled in fields it technically wasn't designed for.
Meanwhile, the Hyena Bomber was designed for multiple fields, but failed every one of them. Outside of civilian targets, the Hyenas weren't very effective.
In fact, the Y-Wing wouldn't be handed a major defeat until the battle of Yavin, where a whole squadron was shot down by Darth Vader and two TIE Pilots. But that was due to the skill of the enemy pilots, not 100% design flaws of the Y-Wings.
I've been doing a lot of research on these two ships because I like to analyze how things would function in game design, and I don't think Battlefront's Starfighter Assault mode did either of these ships justice. They aren't designed to be symmetrical to one another. The Hyena doesn't have that 360 degree turret or a shield generator. In a one-on-one fight the Y-Wing would likely come out on top every single time. I think the only way the two could really fit would be if the gamemode was designed asymmetrically. Vultures would be faster than Y-Wings but more fragile, especially without any shielding.
It seems as though the hyena is similar to the real world Japanese Mitsubishi A6M series of fights known to everyone but the Japanese themselves as the Zero. The Zero was a fighter that at first glance was devastatingly effective in reality while the design worked well when developed in the 30s and it earned a partially deserved reputation (mostly in the very early war against China where they mostly fought already obsolete aircraft many from WW1) it quickly became realized that the aircraft was a glass cannon whose cannon was no where near as powerful as first assumed. It had weak guns with little ammunition and due to the designers demand for speed and agile maneuverability at all costs had no armor was seriously underpowered and had a very low wing load capability meaning it could carry no more than 275 pounds of bombs. The only advantage it has was its insane agility and maneuverability in close twisting dogfights. Because of its ability to basicly turn on a dime it was incredibly dangerous. However even when fighting in its element it was more at risk than most aircraft due to its inability to take ANY kind of hit where its main opponents throughout the war the American F4-F Wildcat F6-F Hellcat and the P-40 Warhawk could take much more damage and required most of an A6Ms ammunition to bring down. And in the case of both the Wildcat and Hellcat they were in their original varients almost as agile and in later varients were actually more agile than their A6M counterparts. So the A6Ms advantages shown in the beginning of the war were quickly nullified. It seems as the Star Wars Hyena is much the same.
Imagine the battle of Kamino hadn’t had the objective to retrieve Jango Fett‘s DNA from Kamino. This would have been such a playfield for hyena bombers, even if it were just plain suicide missions, like crashing with their bombing bay fully loaded with explosives either into holes being penetrated into the outside structure of Tipoca City, through its huge hangar doors to inflict heavy damage to the internal structure and kill as many clones as possible or target the columns, which it was build on.

Here's what answers the "which one is better" for me: the fact that a squadron of hyena bombers can be taken out by a friggin *gunship*. Sure, gunships have armaments that can aim basically all around them, but these aren't the most powerful armaments in the republic and gunships are extremely far from the most manuverable ship a clone pilot could hope to fly.
Edit: the same goes for the battle with the scout fighter.
The cost to effectiveness ratio is not to be ignored. Hynena bombers are staggeringly cheaper than a Y wing and even if several are lost in a bombing run, they still come out ahead of the Y wing. It's greatest flaw is republic plot armour.
As good as they were the Y-Wing was still very vulnerable to attacks. Even with the second seat being manned by a gunner. They were not as able to defend themselves as well as other ships could. If they had an escort it was a matter of fact for them to take down an ISD. But without it... well you lost an entire squad.
I feel like often times, the hyena bombers losses are caused by encountering "hero" skill level enemies. Jedi pilots wrecking whole squads is not really a fair test of their abilities. Combine that with the fact that the CIS rarely ever screened their bombing runs with waves of normal vulture droids, and you have a recipe for disaster with a vessel that otherwise could have been absolutely devastating in its effect
No wonder the rebel alliance used Y-wings since most of the rebel leaders fought during the clone wars or saw the war when they grew up and probably were impressed by whay the Y-wings did and wanted to use these ships to fight the empire until the B-wing replaced the Y-wing years after the clone wars
if I was a commander, I'd still take the hyena, for its sheer damage output, and speed to out run most things trying to shoot it down
I don't think the battle record is really fair to look at in the clone wars show, cause of course the Jedi, republic and clones are going to win most battle and shoot them down, its bad in the show for meta reasons since the good guys have to win. It'd be like saying the Hyena is bad because the CIS lost the war, or caused it to lose.
With them being able to store the vulture and hyena droids on the top leaving their hangars basically empty they should have had all the best non droid separatist pilots flying top of the line fighters and bombers assigned to say grievous and dookus ships, and purely used them like special forces having them ignore everything the vulture droids would go after and only target critical systems and engage Jedi craft, I know they did have non droids in the military but they should have used them more lol

BTW, fighting against BTL-B Y-Wings on the TIE Fighter Total Conversion Mod for X-Wing Alliance Upgrade sure is surprisingly hard. As if fighting Escort Shuttles wasn't hard enough.
The Y-wing have the benefit of having a rear gunner. While the Hyena would require escorts but separatists leaders rarely gave them any.
I would say as a pure bomber with escorts Hyena since they’re cheaper then the Y-wings and a squad would most likely consists of more Hyena.
