- HOW TO change a Dana 80 pinion seal.
So I didn’t like the first video I did so I did it again. I wasn’t thinking on the right diff When I set the load on the pinion nut. ( THE DANA 70 IS THIS WAY AS WELL )
So on a Dana 80 you want to tighten the pinion to 450-500 foot pound. So you want it tight.

Thank you for this video, it put to rest my fear of hammering the pinion nut home. I did my seals earlier today and I was so worried about screwing up the preload I went real gentle on the pinion nut and ended up slinging oil on the way home, determined it was from between the pinion seal and pinion yoke shaft. I'll drive the nut harder in tomorrow and I assume that'll solve my leak.
I appreciate the videos . Good advice on the seal . I seen guys get bit on leaks from a stopped up vent ..
Rob does painting and trim work on the side...look at how he uses that gun,the bead and the finger bead spreading method. Great info Rob, as always. We all appreciate it.
I have done so cocking in the past. Lol.
@@CUTTERUPROB Haha..my man. Wish I was closer to a guy like you with a very reputable shop
Thanks for the vid, just about to do my AAM 9.25 front pinion, a bit different in pieces, but same process relatively.
the aam will be a crush sleeve. so basicly same idea but you have to tighten it to it has the pre load
I just tried the pinion seal on my 2003 F350 dually, with what I believe is a Dana 80. Install went terrible, the seal got damaged. It wouldn't go in straight, it kept popping up on one side and going in all the way on one side. I even had a 3" PVC cap, which is 4" in diameter, and fit on the inner ring of the seal perfectly. Even with that, it didn't do me any good. The silicone seal around the seal was trashed, metal got gouged out of the seal, and on the house where you put the silicone, I now have a few marks where the metal got roughed up. I took the seal back and they ordered another one, this is from Auto Zone. I'll try that method. I'm doing this from the ground, maybe you can see better from standing. I'm a DIY newb, who's never done this before. Thanks.
It is easier on the hoist for sure. I find if you can get the seal With the flange on it there easier to install. But they can be a pain
@@CUTTERUPROB is there another sealer you recommend? I don’t think RTV in the tubes is a quality sealant for gear lubes.
I use gm case sealant. On the seal I would buy one for splicer or ford for it
@@CUTTERUPROB Final update, I just called a mobile mostly heavy truck mechanic out. He had a huge sealer installer, it looked like a metal beer mug. Using that and a huge heavy hammer, it went in no problem. I'm just flabbergasted how your seal in the video went in so easily, and even a new seal, I couldn't get it to seat good, as 25% of the seal would seem to stick out. When I tried your method using the pry bar, it would pop out the opposite end I was tapping on. Still, your video was helpful, and thanks for sharing.
Is your nut 28mm ? I just purchased a 2010 F-350 Diesel 6.4 . My nut was loose trying to figure out what torque spec to set it at. I set it last night to stop the loose play in rear. But only torque it to 100 foot pounds , to not over tighten it. Better too low than too high, it's tighter than before I loosened it cleaned it and put back on. Any advice would be helpful, Thanks Richard
Be a different spec on that. I would see if you can get someone that has the specs for it
What brand socket did you use? Ive read about needing snap on socket #M3586 as most have too big of an od to fit in the yoke. Thanks for your time. Great video.
this one is just a cheap socket ground down
Hey Rob, I have an F350 dually with Dana 80. I replaced my rear pinion seal and when I tightened the pinion nut like you did I couldn’t spin the wheels. Any idea why?
pull the pinion bearing out and see what the shims looks like
Need to Know how to remove play in yoke. Did your procedure about 2 months ago, but can rotate yoke quite a bit before wheels move. looking at yoke flange as a clock face, I have about 4 - 5 miniutes of play before whell turns. Is this a total rebuild? 380k plus miles. Always had slck in rear end since purchased. had 130k then
Only way to do it is by setting the back lash. In these diffs that with shims.
@@CUTTERUPROB Ok, I think I get it. your video is the only one I could find that delt with an F350 and identied the correct size nut. But if I fully understand, I will have to shim diff to correct backlash and there is no crush sleeve on pinion Shaft?
Question, why do you prefer gym case sealant over say Permatex right stuff?
I find the case sealant does a better job myself. I have had issue with the right stuff. But to be far I think the tunes were old when I bought them. But just never trusted after that.
Great videos Rob! Looking forward to your rebuild video.. I'm about to put my 3.54 gears and pinion into a new housing and want to change the bearings and seals. Is there a place local you order from. I'm in the Calgary area as well.
Thanks 👍
Rockauto or the gear center ar emu go too
Is this the same for a Dana 70 with the 3.07 gears so i guess Dana 71?
I did my seal today and when i went to tighten the nut the cone on the back of the yoke hits the seal before i could get the nut tight also the yoke is really tight (had to use a puller to get it off) i noticed you had a different style yoke (the flange looked flatter, maybe i have the wrong style yoke)
Same thing happened to me bought a new yoke and seen this problem what did u do? I bought new style seal that has a indent so hopefully gives me more room
@@georgeaxtell4716 I had put the seal in backwards. So i had to buy a new seal, put it in the right way and that fixed the problem.
Is it ok if you grab the threaded shaft and there is a little play when you shake it
Shouldn’t be it the yoke and nut is on.
@@CUTTERUPROB After I put the yoke and nut back on there was no play, thx for the response
BAFFLING. Have you ever had a seal pop out? I had a mechanic come over, with a huge seal driver, and he blasted the seal in there. The seal was in there, everything seemed fine. Now, the seal is literally popping out and I have a small seal leak. How does this happen? Why? Are there two different seals? O'Reilly showed two seals, and the seal I used was 4.035 in diameter, and the other option is a seal 4.043 in diameter. Have you seen this before? Thanks.
i have done hundreds never had the issue, you can add a bit of locktite to the outside to hold the seals, on the seal i use seals frim the dealer or spilcer myself, never had good looking to parts store ones
Thank you
Always great info (I ponder often where great vids like these are gonna go when no one between BC & Brownsville / Seattle to NYC don't speak or understand English in a few short yrs..) 🤔
i guess i will have to do the video with sub titles
Biiiiiiiiggg RTV GUY here too lol
In the rights spot sure am lol
Dana 70 does not have a crush sleeve either
shit right right i must be thing a dana 60, been a while since i built one lol
@@CUTTERUPROB 👍👍
I jammed her right now yoke won’t turn but wheels do turn?? Wtf do I do now?
Sounds like the pre load on the pinion is wrong
Help me out man?
