    Furality was one of the first "conventions" that I actually attended. The pure shock and awe that I felt when looking around at the detail and worlds was astounding. The music, the world building, the setting of it all mixed with amazing music, meetups and friends... beautiful.

    Thank you for making this video. As a staff member of Furality, I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed the event.
    To clarify something: while we do have over 100 people on staff, most of Furality's staff are not game devs. We do have a team of software developers who manage the technical infrastructure and web portals needed to make the event happen, but the actual convention assets are made by our creative team. They are about 15 people. The worlds, music, visuals, and assets of Furality are created by a team of 15 game devs. I hope that puts things in perspective.

    Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed Furality Aqua! Having been working with the team as a moderator/support specialist since the very first one, I'm always so proud to look back and see how much it's grown. Virtual reality conventions are only just getting started, and I'm excited to be part of a team of exceptionally talented people that are working on the cutting edge and pushing the boundaries of what a convention can be.
    Besides providing support for attendees, one of the things I do with Furality is organizing the new player night! We get some of the staff to hang out and be available to answer questions and have a small meetup in the weeks leading up to the next event. I like to think it's a great way for people who are new to VRChat to jump in, meet other furries who are interested in attending, and ask questions before the big weekend!

    Regardless if people say Furality is the largest furry convention or put it in a separate category as the largest virtual furry convention, I think it's great our fandom gets to have VR spaces for social events. Not only is it (arguably) a more financially accessible furry event to attend, the fact that Furality is now starting to host portals at IRL furry cons is AMAZING!!!
    I didn't go to BLFC or Furry Migration this year, but it was still great to be able to hop into VR and see friends attending those cons through the portal. I think VR is a major improvement in the fandom.
    A while ago, I wrote a video essay stating that the furry fandom was going to become more disconnected as it got larger. More people means more cons popping up with regional-based attendances, which means more people will be part of the fandom that you won't meet. And this is partially true up until 2019. But I think VR definitely changed that in the other direction bringing people closer together because it's not location specific.

    Thanks so much for the video! I feel like nobody's talking about us ;w;
    As other members of staff have commented, only a small portion of Furality staff is the 'indie dev' team. Most of the time, there's only two or three of us assembling the visual aspect of the worlds, with the rest of us being dedicated to programming/shaders/concept art! While working on the con, the Creative Team works full-time, since the amount of work required is truly indie-studio-like - it would be impossible to achieve to this degree on a purely volunteer basis. (We sometimes have as little as 3 months to work on each event, though this is increasing in the future!)
    Many of our top volunteer staff have run physical cons, and some have even chaired them - they say that while there are many differences between the two, there's a ton of similarities: especially the costs (the WikiFur guy thought we only paid $20 for content delivery during Aqua, because his experience comes from hosting images on a furry website. We actually paid $17k. Which is nothing compared to the venue bill).
    Also thank you for the shoutout! The music is currently just a small part of my work here, but hopefully with more time to work on stuff, I can make more

    Presentation is absolutely beautiful. Being a software developer, it actually explodes my head for the amount engineering they need to do within half a year, just to make sure that you can "bump into" a friend that's doing the same thing. (The friends system was a really good touch)

    As someone with sever social anxiety always wanting to attend a physical con. The brainchild of this is a genius because as you said it is a great way to least dip your toes into what it might be like at least in an interaction way. I think the people behind it are geniuses honestly. Mean my social anxiety is so bad I don't voice chat random people in games etc but it's easier than in person. Warm up to voice is easier than to everything. Now just need VR and I'd try it tbh.

    Coming from the Brony side of things, when Covid hit we had the event Ponyfest Online appear. It's first event was incredible. The scale was fantastic and thousands of people got to have their first con experience. Second one soon followed and was quite fun... but then the market got absolutely swamped and became nothing special. Every week there seemed to be a new "con" and it was really just Discord servers with events after a while. Seeing Furality I can see the big difference was the VR element which is what makes it more like a convention then PFO and it's other... cons? We use Ponytown which is fun but that's just a flash game. That may be more cause we don't need the whole "fursonas interacting" element as much. I had tons of fun just hopping in chat rooms with names I recognized. But VR cons sound like a fantastic idea and an easy way to interact with people. The convention experience is something that I have gotten since a young age just by luck of Bronycon moving to my city, and everyone deserves it at least once. I wish everyone who attends the best!

  • @Laskvurel

    Furality was my introduction to the furry community. Prior to it I was too nervous to interact with them on any level and jumped back and forth of even considering myself one. (Was in the position where I more so supported my friends who were furries.
    While the event may have been virtual the friends and emotions I felt were not. To me it was as real as anything I've experienced and caused me to fall in love with the furry community.
    I went from hardly considering myself one to thinking about what I want to make my sona, attend more cons, interact with my local furry group, and maybe even get a suit some day.
    My only regret is that I waited as long as I did but look forward to the next one!

    I remember Furality 2020 when DJ actually played live but for reasons and replays they went pre recorded. It's "almost" a convention, but I'll have to give Confurro the spot for a true convention in VRChat. If Furality wants to be a true convention, all worlds must be compiled as one (but obviously for the 81 player limit makes the ratio of the world size feel empty. Furality did do a proper light show with real software (if you watched the behind the scenes video) and yet is still better than Slyfest. Furality MIGHT be a yearly thing instead of a bi annual things due to the amount of work. Aside form that, as a VR experience it's awesome. Also checkout the DevOps video if you want to know how Furality actually runs. I'd say, Furality is a win for the largest furry event overall if I'm being honest.

    I agree with your statement through and through. Though I've never attended a furry convention before, from what I've seen from videos of Furality it looks like a lot of fun and with a large gathering like that, I sure damn well would consider that a furry convention. Who cares if its physical or not. As long as I can see, hear and interact with people in the space around me, that's perfectly fine and lines up with most physical furry conventions anyway. Besides not being able to exactly "feel" each other (Don't know if those touch sensitive jackets I've seen on the internet would count as feeling, but I digress) Besides, I truly do think these events have that extra special cool factor to them where you can attend it as your 3D modeled fursona as if you are an ACTUAL anthro character attending an event. (On another planet free from human tyranny lol) Plus, how can you argue with $15 vs hundreds of dollars in travel/hotel/ticket fees? All for just ONE convention at that.
    Now personally, the ONLY reason I have not attended this event yet is because despite being able to attend without a VR rig, I REALLY want my first experience with VRChat to be in VR. I want to experience the VRC world in its best form. I wanna get get my model done and everything. I wanna hold out my hands in front of me and squeal in excitement to see wavy fur and colorful beans replace my fleshy mitts lol. Overall, I just think Virtual Furry Conventions are a great idea. Genius even for the amount of worlds and themed experiences you can create within them like what Beta showed us here. Seriously, Hats off to the creators of the Furality world. Passionate and insanely talented beans the lot of you.

    Been in VRChat for nearly 5 years and the furry fandom has been a heavy influence for longer than that. There's a lot of history to go over, but it's easy to say that Furality was a focal point that had been funneling even more furries into VRChat. Furality is the largest furry event in the world, but in regards to VRChat it's also one of the few successful events in general. Furality is iconic on its own, but in a fuller picture there's even more to be impressed with.

    Here we go, I'm doing the thing that you should normally shouldn't do and I'm commenting before I even watch through the entire video but I just want to say part of the reason I feel like it's as big as it is is because of the fact that not everybody has the ability to travel to a convention. I certainly don't, so because the entry fee is so cheap ($15 for the base tier) and you can attend from the comfort of your own home, and allows me to be able to actually attend a furry convention. My first one was the one before aqua, Legends and even though I didn't buy with the theme that much I still bought the poster because it was my first furry con and i had a blast. Plus I feel like the argument that because furality is virtual and not everybody is able to attend due to the requirement of having a PC capable of running VR check even in desktop mode is kind of dumb because an actual furry convention is also limited because you need to be able to have the money to be able to travel and get a hotel room if the convention isn't local to where you live

    Even without looking at these arguments, it's pretty obvious that they're going to be primarily divided between those who have VR gear and have actually attended Furality conventions and those who don't have VR but think they understand it.
    I have been to many RL Furry conventions, and I have been to all of the Furality conventions. And my experience has been that the "feel" between them is essentially the same. VR technology is the real game changer here. It enables the in person experience.

    Addendum; VRChat is not exclusive to VR, and can be played in desktop mode if you do not own a VR headset, which is one of the main reasons it has such a high attendance rate. Most people with a good enough computer could simply log in without any need for travel costs or any other expenses that make attending a convention in person difficult.
    Unfortunately, as of recent events VRChat has introduced Easy Anti-Cheat, which has completely removed all modded clients from the game, while not removing any of the malicious actors it was claimed to protect against (namely crashers and information thieves). This has led to a large migration to ChilloutVR and NeosVR, as well as other social VR platforms. I do not know if Furality will maintain its presence in VRChat or migrate to other platforms in the future.

    I believe Furality should be considered a convention, but titled a bit differently. Like a “virtual” convention. This form of a convention is great for not just furries, but also may make future VR conventions. It’s all about socialization… connecting with new people.

    Hey- someone has most definitely already said this
    And I don't mean to be that guy but... that intro soundtrack song that played on Beta walking into the main lobby wasn't custom, it was the into music that played in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
    Now, unless Beta removed the original sound piece for copyright/experience restrictions etc.- that ain't it chief

    Yes it is a convention, in the same way a banana is a fruit. It is a furry convention of the virtual kind. A virtual convention. It doesn't compete with physical classical furry conventions.
    IT'S A VIRTUAL FURCON! 🤦🏽‍♂️

      Agreed, and this is Furality's official stance. The idea that they are 'competing' is, in itself, silly. The issue was that there were people (some with a lot of influence) who were trying to even argue about whether it was a 'convention' at all, which I find absurd. Like, dictionaries exist.

    If musicians can have "concerts" in video games and it still be considered a concert, then you can have a "convention" in a video game. It makes literally no difference where it is. People who argue that it's not are literally just trying to be elitists and gatekeep.

    So I'm a bit on the fence about comparing furality to what one could call "meatspace" conventions.
    You should not compare the numbers of this convention to these of MFF or AC, I feel like these are two destinctively different categories, IRL and URL Conventions. So you could say sure, 15k tickets sold, that's the biggest virtual convention. But the real challenge is trying to gather as many furries in person, because of the struggles you listed to finance such a trip. Unfortunately beaming hasn't been invented yet, so overcoming these distances to actually be there is the real deal.
    Of course more people flock to vrchat for that low entry point, technically and monetary. However conglomerating to virtual worlds is not a new thing (furry MUDs, furcadia, second life, the list goes on...). Sure VR is to date the most immersive way of interacting with one another without being physically present, but I feel like that's still not the same thing than hanging out with friends in person.

    • @HiyuMarten
      @HiyuMarten Год назад

      While I'm a biased source, I can say with confidence that Furality captures the 'feel' of a convention. I'm still not sure how, exactly - I think it's a thousand small things. While there's stuff you can do in VR that you can't irl, there's a few things you can't - like going to a place to eat together!

    • @MyBroSux24
      @MyBroSux24 Год назад

      @@HiyuMarten Hi Hiyu! First off I want to congratulate you and your team, as you have done an incredible job in these worlds. They feel so pretty and themed like you could never redecorate any convention hotel or business center ever. I can see how you can lean into that theme much more than on any irl convention.
      One thing that's certainly different is what I call the buzz factor. If you are at an irl con for several days you can feel the buzz of that convention going on in the lobby, around the hotel, pretty much everywhere. Even when you are in your hotel room, you can't really escape that feeling. I felt on virtual type events, once you exit the program or shut down your pc, that buzz is gone. Like a lost connection that couldn't be cut that easy when you actually are in a place. Sure that could help if you are easily overwhelmed by the impressions you get at such a con. You can't really miss an irl convention day (unless you wanna sleep in and visit the city instead of going to the con)

    • @SargonDragon
      @SargonDragon Год назад

      For comparing the numbers for the convention, if someone were to put on an RL convention that was free to get in, does that also not count then? How about if one convention charges $200 for registration and another charges $20?
      As for virtual worlds not being a new thing, that is true in a way. But VR is not just an evolution of those. VR is distinctly different in producing actual in-person presence. You're not looking at the world through a window. You're on the other side of the glass. And that fundamentally changes things.

    Let's say you find an apple, it is the most delicious and tastiest apple you've ever eaten, but it's skin is purple instead of red, does it stop being the world's tastiest apple because it isn't red? Does it not count? It still counts, it doesn't matter if it was virtual, that actually kinda makes it better. While some may argue physical irl conventions are better, I see it as a matter of personal preference rather than anything that can be settled by a vote, which I think would end up being pretty 50/50. Either way, when we disregard the fact "it's not irl" as personal preferences, a virtual convention is actually an objectively better idea. The reason Furality broke records with number of attendees is because of how available it is, while it's still impossible to make it available for every furry in the world, making its only requirements being a relatively decent computer and a relatively small quantity of money already makes it hundreds if not thousands of times more available, most furries who have contact with the online furry community have a way to join furality. It's easily available, there's no risk of physical harassment, a lot easier to moderate, allows for the people behind it to express themselves much further than they would with a hotel lobby or something, and most importantly of all, it's still really fucking fun.
    Oh, me? No, I never went to Furality or any other convention, but I do greatly respect everything it stands for.

    I only went to the first one, and from my point of view.. this con is trash, i got banned instantly from an instance by a staff member and then the con for having a non-crashing avatar with too many things attached to it, no warning at all as well as no rules against what i had. Normal cons are better, VRChat is dead after they added the worst Anti cheat into their game to combat quality of life mods. They also added features they would ban people for as vrchat plus paid features for income, like using a shader to change the way your name plate looks and have a sticker near it, or even more fav avatars like other clients gave for free. Its hard to see this con being bigger then MFF, wasnt even 1 or 2k people in it on the first year
    Always love ur vids tho dude
