The BIGGEST FURRY DRAMA of the Year

  • Today we're talking about the yearly MFF Room Lottery Drama! The MFF Con Staff work very hard to make the biggest convention ever happen every year, and sometimes we might not get everything we want out of the convention, like a main hotel room for example. In this video I discuss some of the concerns brought up every year about MFF being as big as it is, while also looking through some of the memes that furries put together about the convention!
Editor's Note: Please do not take out your anger on the MFF convention staff, it is okay to be frustrated and upset that you didn't get a room in the lottery system. When the convention asks for feedback, that's the best way you can voice your concerns and worries, but do not lash out at the twitter account or any of the convention on staff there. They want to make things work for everyone.

Editor's Note: I realize I may have forgotten to include some of the concerns with dealers not getting a room at MFF through the lottery. It is still a valid concern and I believe the convention is still doing everything they can to accommodate everyone properly and fairly. I want it to also be known that it is OKAY to be upset and frustrated with the results of the lottery and in turn not getting the room or accommodations you were looking for this convention. However, it is still NOT OKAY to be lashing out at the MFF twitter account or any convention staff as a result. When the convention asks for feedback, that's the best way you can voice your concerns and worries, but do not lash out at the twitter account or any of the convention on staff there. They want to make things work for everyone. I will be doing a followup video discussing these points at a later date, but I wanted to put this here for the time being!
TLDR: It is okay to be frustrated and upset. MFF is still doing the best they can with what they're given. It is NOT OKAY to harass and lash out at the con staff trying. Give them time to fix the problem.

Honestly MFF is probably one of those cons that I wouldn't go to as my first con anyway? I have a lot of anxiety about being out in public in general, let alone surrounded by people- In a tight space. SO me personally, definitely looking for a smaller convention, or a furmeet kind of situation as my first experience.
Also to add onto what Beta said, "you don't have to go" remember going to conventions like MFF is a LUXERY. JUST like owning a fursuit. If you don't make it, or can't go- Yea it sucks, but when push comes to shove it shouldn't ruin your whole year, because there's so many other ways to engage with this community.

I personally honestly think that doing a lottery for rooms is a bad thing to do. It causes this sort of thing to happen and also makes it more difficult for people to actually join a con. Instead, they should have invested more in other places to buy tickets at (to spread the available sites to buy them from and thus reduce the traffic to the main site, for example). Or maybe just expand to include more rooms with other hotels nearby.
And definitely make sure that dealers; performers & staff all have a main hotel room. Those people should NOT be needing to do a raffle to get a room. That is just insane!

  • @maricampari3970

I wish MFF would choose a more central hotel or used the detached event space across the street cause it's closer to the other hotels in this area. They could also take a sister hotel and expand, I think they're too big for their britches. DragonCon is now in like 4 hotels and you don't get FOMO if you're not at the main one so much cause it still feels like a con atmosphere in your own lobby.

I strongly encourage people to pick every possible hotel when entering the room block lottery! There are shuttles which go to the more distant con room block hotels, and they seem to have turned down the heat in the long walkway these past few years. Heck, there are hotels connected to the convention center or the heated walkway which aren't part of the con room block. Nany people get rooms in those instead! MFF is absolutely worth attending, even if you weren't in the main hotel. And given how busy those elevators in the main Hotel can get, a satellite hotel might work out more conveniently for you.

So MFF has been the largest furcon in the world for years now... And technically it's in Rosemont, not Chicago xD.
As for traveling to get to a furcon, exploring a city... It's... Not as magical as it sounds. Having been to MFF for a decade now, there isn't much in the surrounding area that is touristy friendly.
Also... Other hotels are charging outrageous prices now for rooms vs the con rate. It isn't as simple as "just book elsewhere"
As for people crying and complaining... The solution is simple: go to another con xD
That's what my buddies n I are doing - we've all had the pleasure of doing MFF a dozen times... Time to explore the other cons.

So this is going to be my first MFF , and my roommate was lucky enough to get main hotel. He kinda explained a bit of the process. it essentially is a first come first serve basis in a way. It boils down to what size room and how many people stay in the room. theres some process that checks all that info, it also depends on how many back ups you listed when applying. We chose two separate hotels outside the main one when the lottery started. Basically if you dont get a room in the main, save reservations for other hotels ahead of time and check on backups in the lottery itself. Even if you dont get main hotel , you still get a room, which is something many people dont plan properly for a head of time. theres a method to the madness, just requires alot of planning.

I personally prefer the idea of a lottery system, giving it's a more fairer way to ensure everyone has an equal chance. Whilst it can be disappointing not getting a hotel onsite and sometimes may need to look around which can be expensive, there is no need to vent that anger on convention staff.
After all, as Beta mentioned, convention staff are based on volunteers, people taking time out of there day to help organize a large event which keep in mind can take months. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on which makes it more difficult to whether it be unforeseen circumstances, mistakes etc.
After all, just remember, there is always next year and other furry conventions and local meets to attend too. If you been to a convention multiple times, let others have the chance to experience it rather throw a temper tantrum.
I always believed in that the fandom is meant to stand for being open and diverse, not the opposite of that. So rather shouting out into the abyss, take a step back, breath. Just take the precautions to make plans for alternative accommodations and understand that not everything will go right as big events can be expected to make mistakes and have the odd oversight. as there is more to it.

This year I went into the lottery, and lo and behold, me and my group actually got a room in the main hotel! That right there debunks any of this stupid "Only catering to popular furs" because I am NOT. But you were right about being prepared as well, I made sure to have a room at the Doubletree (cause that's where we usually go) LONG before the lottery even opened. Like, not getting the main hotel isn't an automatic dealbreaker for the con. I've had to walk the skywalk of hell many many times, and while I may not have to this year, I seriously doubt I'll ever get the main hotel again. AWA has around 30K people a year and it has a "main hotel/convention" space like furcons but there's never been a room lottery or any issues. It's still just first come first serve.

I think its going around in a fur suit it's self that is the issue, with a fur suits the issue of over heating breathing difficulty and finding somewhere to sit and carrying all that stuff around as well as finding a safe place to sleep if you party to hard with friends.

I have been to SCI-FI cons and some of those were just short of a nightmare, there was a big sci-fi con at the Disneyland hotel in 1986, yeah three days worth I got one of the last rooms and part way through I wound up with another person in the room as well. Still had a lot of fun. I figure a furry con would be about like that, about 6 months before the con put in for a room for that time period that way you already have the room reserved.

While I've never organised a convention before, I have studied library events planning as part of my certificate course, and a lot of planning and work goes into organising a library event let alone the amount of work that must into a convention. From what I've heard, MFF is clearly in the hands of people who have a better idea of what they're doing compared to something like Dashcon. With an event this big, there's going to be minor instances of something happening and they do their best to fix those issues because it's all they can do when they have a hundred other things to manage and organise.

If I had to be honest, (if MFF don't do this already) they should prioritise those who are disabled and then next people coming in from Abroad who have to get a visa etc to come in to have the main hotel rooms before the other kinds of guests get priority if any rooms remain.
I personally won't ever be attending MFF as I am not from the US & will never come to the US just for a convention especially one that is so chaotic and packed.

Apparently my partner's friend assumed they were rooming with us and only told him this morning. There's one bed and we'd have to pay more if they roomed with us. Their logic is...astounding.

As a hotel owner nothing about this lottery system makes sense, especially for events like conventions. It should’ve been first come, first serve. Bots and disgruntled customers should’ve been considered long before saying “Uh oh! This isn’t working..” to the original plan of making a deal with who had it first, If we need to create lottery systems to handle the influx of new furries coming to MFF then perhaps the venue that it’s being hosted at is no longer big enough and or the event is too big for the event holders to handle. There is no shame in needing to find somewhere else to host a convention and or finding new ways to be better prepared for such a mass event. Creating janky reservation systems that would entirely slow down the booking and reserving process won’t help with the confusion. I appreciate the efforts to curb the entitlement to having a room but from one professional to another, MFF is no longer capable of managing itself. I would not be surprised if you get a ‘TanaCon’ on MFF’s hands with the mass amount of money and customers they are letting fly in each year without any proper organization.

While MFF is a big convention by furry standards, there are plenty of other gaming/anime/comic con type conventions that are several times larger in terms of attendance than MFF is. What do they do differently than MFF does to make it work? MFF isn't the only con that has multiple hotels and stuff spread out. Gencon has like 4 times the attendance of MFF and is spread out over a chunk of Indianapolis. I think part of the issue is the furry fandom is having growing pains as their conventions start hitting mid size (compared to other fandoms) and you have a lot of furs that mostly go to furry conventions (that are relatively small compared to stuff like PAX, Otakon, the big Comic Cons) dealing with logistic issues you see in every larger convention. Learn from what other conventions do.

The whole location honestly seems kind of inconvenient, usually if people plan ahead they can easily get a room in the main hotel of a con and usually staying in other hotels nearby are not that much worse. Like maybe they should consider changing the location overall in the future if it takes that damn long to get to the convention unless you're in one specific area even while connected to the con directly.

Like yeah, it sucks if you didn’t get a room and you really wanted to go, but if life hasn’t taught you yet that you aren’t owed anything, and that “disappointments happen, better luck next time” then yeah, you’re no better than a random Karen complaining when the McDonald’s soft serve machine is broken.

Hotels are nice, but they can cost a fortune... And some times the hotel may offer discounts for you to attend an event there, I find the cost is more than the AirBNB reservation. This is just my take on this... Please don't tear me apart if you think I am against hotels...
