  • This is little unusual for an Astrophotography Video, but as someone that has been in the Information Security industry for 2.5 decades, I felt this was important enough to bring to the attention of all my Astronomy friends. (Especially those that would cry for 6 weeks straight if they lost all of their past and present images...) The world is a challenging place right now and modern tactics includes a strong component of cyber activity. It is very possible that in the coming days/week/months we see ramped up destructive malware.
Here are a couple things you can do in an attempt to protect your data:
Patch your OS (on all your systems)
    Update your Security Software Suite
Backup your data to at least 1 if not more locations
Consider offline backups as a primary option
Check to see if your network/wifi gear needs a backup as well
Do all of the above frequently

Glad you’re back Chad. You are the reason I switched and got proficient at NINA.

Thanks for watching Mike! I hope I made the transition easier. Moving between any 2 astro packages can be challenging!

WOOHOO! Chads back! Welcome back, buddy! I use an OWC 4TB USB drive for all imaging projects so I feel safe.

I load up my astro photos on Astrobin. Further I have the whole projects from Pixinsight and the raw files on an external hard drive.
I hope that is sufficient. 😅
    Clear skies, Christian

Perfect! There are certainly 'levels' to this process that each person can find sufficient. Sounds like you have it covered for sure!

I got 3 copies of all my stuff. one offline, one of those three actively used. IT's a little scary right now with all the things happening in the world, so this is a good video to warn people of what may happen.

Great! It is bad enough when you lose a night of imaging to technical issues, but losing years of imaging would be a nightmare!

No problem. Losing a few files is a small cost compared to what others are going through right now so I don't mean to trivialize it but I also don't want anyone to lose so much hard work. Thanks for watching!

Thanks. Was there a subtle nod there? 💙💛

Maybe. It is just trending towards 'disruption' and destructive malware. I know how i would feel if all my files went missing... :(

I am thinking of asking my company network administrator for more space on one drive, so I would have more space when I'm seriously imaging. Does MS give away free space in addition to their "free" 1TB per office license?

    • @PatriotAstro

with my personal account it looks like I can add 1 additional TB but it costs $9.99/month. BTW 2TB, on google drive is $100/yr.

I talked to the owner about " a side benefit" and he went with me to the network administrator office. He does not care about the cloud. When the network administrator looked into it, he said he could upgrade me to 5tb for $10/mo., but he had me go to accounting to get a P.O. I went to see her, but she said she couldn't do it ( hint hint...without the owners ok). I decided not to push the subject. The network admin head told me to look Amazon, but I'm not a fan of them plus the Prime is 50% more than Onedrive 5tb. Oh well.....

@@dawnpaulandelizabethromero3458 Just price out local storage for now. You can just get some usb drives, or get fancy with a redundant network box (NAS). Up front is higher but cost savings in the long run.

@@PatriotAstro Thats what I have been thinking. Even closer to "now", though, I do have a 4tb USB drive hooked up to the laptop in the observatory (a 3 year project lol) and on my router...an ebay special Apple NAS 1tb. I'd like data to go (> direction arrow): Camera>4TB USB drive>upload to OneDrive and download to processing MAC to use Pixinsight>save masters to MAC with Time Machine. 3 spots for data in two bldgs. and a chip at MS. Erase all Subs except on 4TB USB with OneDrive.

@@dawnpaulandelizabethromero3458 Along these lines, take a look at the new Remote Copy plugin. It can save you some scripting in one of those steps (possibly) and will make copies of the files during the active session.

What online services do you guys use for image storage/backup?

    • @PatriotAstro
      @PatriotAstro  2 года назад

I'd like to hear from others as well. I do have some space with google that is just easy to use, and with the non free version i can keep my images uncompressed. There are other options... plus my favorite which is just buying more usb storage and putting it on the shelf. You could even keep it offsite or in a lockbox to protect it further from damage. :)
