Wow! That's it. Alterity well interpreted, especially with the theoretical underpinnings by Hegal, Bakhtin, and Spivak. The Last one indicates to me the class room and teaching methodologies, Thank you for doing this.
Professor, thank you very very much, I'm just lurking around about post structuralism, because our teacher encouraged us to and I came across concept of alterity. thank you for this comprehensive video. 👌👌❤
Paul Sireci Thank you. It is on my list. I probably need more preparation for it, as I have to include Gramsci, Ranajit Guha, and Spivak all in one video:)
Thank you. This video relies on Derrida’s and Levinas’s take on altering. I think I mention Derrida in the video. For more details, I suggest reading Derrida.
Can alterity be projected on the native perspective to the Europeans !? I mean for example, let's take a novel that narrates a story from the native's perspective, and its characters think that the Europeans are "the other"; is it possible therefore to apply this concept on this novel ?
Yes, alterity is constitutive part of the self: I know myself only with reference to another. The thing to keep in mind is what power structure is this other caught in? Is it an other that I must become, aspire to be or am other that I denigrate and fear. So, the other is always part of the self; defining what kind is the project of writing.
