These videos and podcasts have been so insightful. I’m writing on post-colonialism for my degree at Glasgow uni and your work has been a great reference point, thank you so much :)
Sometimes, I am off my senses on how sensitive and delicate ideas have been carved out and finished through the minds of scholars like post colonial theorists. Hats off to mentors like you, sir. Making these ideas understandable is a big deal of course.
Hi! Thank you so much for these videos! Can you talk about the history of Anthropology and what 'decolonising' it would look like? I really want to study it, but am uncomfortable with the conceptions of the field.
Thank you. I am not a trained anthropologist so probably cannot say anything discipline-specific. I would recommend reading people like Johannes Fabian, Foucault and others to see how to challenge any Eurocentric methodologies.
Sir what are your thoughts on José Rabasa's essay Allegories of Atlas in The Postcolonial Studies Reader. ? I would really appreciate it if you will make a video on it sir.
Thank you. I guess it’s a fairly simple read that explains the Eurocentric project of map making. I will see if I can record something on it when I have time.
Thanks for this informative piece. I can't help but wonder what the world and these individual regions (countries, in modern consciousness) would have looked and functioned like, before the Europeans arrived? Where there more cohesion between the different tribes? What political and social systems did they practice etc etc? So much erasure and distortion of crucial human history that we ought to retrieve. We can't just employ a 'Western' ideologies/philosophies in tackling global problems - they're somewhat reductive for starters.
Yes, so much of history is lost. You can explore varied paths: Spivak, Said, Chinweizu, Mignolo and many others help us think through these issues. Reading them carefully will enable you to craft your own approach to these issues.
