The only positive I can take from this is the hope that this paradigm shift galvanises Europe and Britain in way that unites centre right and centre left. Pushing back against the damage Putin has clearly done to our democracies over the last 15 years.

It is absurd and small minded to consign the paradigm shift in political ideologies in virtually every civilized country around the world to the actions of individuals who are in many cases nominal leaders.

    • @jayft08
      @jayft08 10 дней назад +8

@@aardque I think you've missed my point. I was not talking about political ideologies across the civilised countries of the world. I was talking about the obvious difference in US foreign policy between Biden and Trump. Europe and the Pacific allies need to react positively to that in a way that creates independence from US Foreign policy. Including combating the affects Russia is having on our economies, our discourse and Ukraine and whoever might follow.

What's gone wrong is Trump. His worshipers don't even concern themselves with world affairs since their world begins and ends at their county boundary. That said, if Europe is concerned about Russias expansion, then Europe collectively needs to step it up. They have the tech, the weaponry, they just need to manufacture in larger numbers. They have finances, time to put them to use. Russia's army is a gaggle of poorly trained conscripts, 60's & 70's tech and a handful of Noth Koreans used as bait. IT suks beyond words that the Orange Menace was put back in power by some very misguided people, but that's how it is. Europe needs to step up.

Thousands of nuclear arms had been left on Ukrainian soil by Moscow after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. But in the years that followed, Ukraine made the decision to completely denuclearize. In exchange, the U.S., the U.K. and Russia would guarantee Ukraine's security in a 1994 agreement known as the Budapest Memorandum.
Ukraine already knows the value of Russian security guarantees.

I am so astounded by the craven, careless gullibility of the tRumpy half of my fellow Americans. Now our only hope for a continuation of representative democracy going forward is some combination of incompetence on the part of our budding Orban and courageous, career-and-freedom risking acts of heroism by front-line gov't employees and military personnel refusing to obey illegal orders. This desperate situation, and the horribly-worse, existential desperation for Ukraine, has been deemed worth it by the financially-illiterate half of American in the magical hope that they just might see the cost of eggs drop a few percent and see gasoline stay down where it is now at pre-pandemic levels. In making this trade they SPIT on the graves of all the fallen in all the wars fought to protect freedom and democracy over the entire course of our history. They also shred any level of dignity we ever had and empty any reservoir of trust which other nations may have had for us. We, and regrettably the rest of the free world, are now in quite a fine mess. Pro-democracy, truth-respecting adults have to bond together and devote to common cause in beating back the kind of right-wing infantilization which is SO on the march in America now.

He tells a piece of the puzzle. But there is SO MANY ISSUES.
Ya: Trump looks unfocused, jumping all over the place -then again, I wager most average people thrown into looking at the state of the US government from the top down to the bottom would end up looking a little like that. Why? Because the US government is a mess - it's overbloated, there are so many regulatory bodies, policies, conflicting goals, and mroe that it is a MESS. The fact it functions as well as it does is bloody shocking. But all of that complexity is a LOT of cost - complex regulations are costly, and time consuming to comply with AND audit, AND enforce: And that means the US government is EXTREMELY costly to run. But the kicker? The US Economy produces very little of actual tangible value - IP sure, but that sequesters what value is created in the market to a very few select hands: Thus wealth disparity.
Fixing the mess is... not going to be easy, and Trump may not be the right person for the job buy SOME of his policies are what the US government needs. And ya: Getting out of foreign wars is a great way to help reduce the operating cost of the US federal government; closing foreign military bases in nations that lack a direct economic benefit to the US helps. And on we go.
But who benefits from fixing the problems? It's not the media. It's not the shareholders that see wealth sequestering through the inflationary spending into their hands. It's not defence contractors that benefit from an over bloated US military willing to spend unlimited sums on over priced soap dispensers (and I wish I was kidding). And so - telling the truth, digging into the values, reporting the manipulation of CPI or how Unemployment is tracked and calculated: That does not benefit the media who is owned by shareholders. It doesn't benefit politicians who's wealth derives from the same realities as shareholders.
No mainstream entity is going to tell you the truth, because the system has been set up over 50+ years now to benefit this status quo and no one who benefits is going to want to rock the boat. The closest thing you get to rocking the boat is Trump and... he's not a great option, possibly bad, maybe even terrible but it has come to a point where a LOT of people see the alternatives as strictly worse: And that, is truly terrifying.

The US has left the table for the foreseeable future.

Funding Ukraine's resistance makes sense for a while but, eventually, an end goal needs to be adopted because without it we are merely wasting money, time and credibility. Europe's manufacturing has languished behind in capability as compared to Mexico, and China. They have as a whole attacked the traditional cultures of europe suppressing them while piling in immigration, which has destroyed pride in the capabilities. Jobs that once were great paying have seen the value of their wages repressed through inflationary government spending including direct, and indirect bank bailouts (see: the bailouts of "Greece" which were really just a proxy for taking European tax payer money, and funnelling it through the Greek government to the German and french etc banks that had over extended loans to Greece").
Then you have Germany having cut up and imploded it's nuclear energy sector and driven the cost of energy through the roof - which has further impacted their industrial capabilities and the cost of doing business in Germany.
The reality is, Europe is not really any better off then much of the US is. It's just... about a decade behind in terms of what it's economy is doing, and oddly has been about that since the end of WWII do to the rebuilding efforts.

I am so disgusted that trump has been elected president. I am so sorry for Europe and Ukraine that you will have to fight Russia without any help from the United States. We have returned to 1941 when the United States pursued the policy of Isolationism. Uk, France, Germany, you will need to take the lead to defend Ukraine, defend democracy and defeat Russia. We in the United States need to hold out intil the next election in 2026 when hopefully we can take back the Senate and the House to stop anything trump will want to do.

With the money committed, there must be a number of American companies (and subsequently employees) who stand to lose out out if support is withdrawn. This is something that Trump must surely recognise at some point that if he supports Ukraine then Americans companies will also be in the running for contracts when the Ukrainians get to rebuild their country.

@@jakebarnes28I thought that $61 billion of support was given. Surely there must be many Senators expecting US arms manufacturers to benefit from that rather than it going to non American arms manufacturers elsewhere. Perhaps you know something that I didn't pick up on.
