  • On January 24th a host of star drummers descended on the Observatory in California for the Bonza Bash NAMM Jamm, spearheaded by Brian Tichy. Each drummer picked one Led Zep song and performed with a killer house band.
    In this video Living Colour's Will Calhoun performs 'Fool In The Rain'.
    We interviewed all the drummers involved with Bonzo Bash about their love for John Bonham and you can read all about it in the April edition of Rhythm Magazine.

    The sound mix killed what was probably a killer performance.

    What the hell are you talking about? Must be the mix your hearing bro. Cause that track is about perfect!

    Well, it's no question that its Will's take on the tune. Initially I was critical, then I realized that NO ONE is going to play as well as John Henry Bonham...then I had to check myself...and appreciate it for what it really was.

    is it just me or is the sound not synched to the video? weird video...

    Will is playing the groove pretty dead on, it's just that the mix is SOOOO bad that you can't hear his ghost notes!!! Hell it's so bad that you can barely hear the cymbals when he hits them!!!

  • @beAllbugger
    @beAllbugger 11 лет назад +1

    like the top comment here implies: there's alot of audio overlooked in the mix here. You can tell he's providing all the Bonzo nuances - we just can't hear it.

    This is because Brian Tichy (Natal/paiste artist) is the organizer of this whole thing. Needless to say, he also plays guitar and sings....very well.

    i liked it ,very powerful and tight .its not sopossed to be the same as the original .The guitar is very weak ..Vocals are good too .

    he is a great drummer, but the shuffle beat is wrong and so rigid...this rythm is very important because , makes the song, and must be fluid....

    Will Calhoun is easely the most technical drummer in the world, no Bozzio or Mangini or Weckl can play the ultra complicated polyrhytmic parts that Will Plays, here he seems a bit bored.

      I love Mr Calhoun just as much as you do but you took your statement bit far.if you love drumming and I hope so... Pls do not make this sort of comment.

      Deepak Gurung
      Why? I have never seen any drummer playing the kind of difficoult polyrhytym that will play, watch some of his solos... can I make this statement?

    • @CloudsBeyond
      @CloudsBeyond 9 лет назад +1

      TESTICLES! He is decent drummer but not in Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Bobby Bawsax, Omar Hakim, etc league! Not by a long shot!

    • @Lasernotes
      @Lasernotes 9 лет назад +1

      ***** He plays more advanced stuff than Bozzio or Wackerman, never seen them played that kind of polyrhytmical stuff.

    Why would any drummer worth his salt try to play it like Bonham.Bonzo never played it the same. This is Will’s take on the song.He just added his Colour to it.It’s the beauty of art.The mix really sux though.

  • @SamNaborsDrums

    bad audio mix and sound quality and video/audio sync. This is way you can't hear Will Calhoun's ghost notes(which are key to this groove).

    • @surfrdave
      @surfrdave 9 лет назад +1

      Exactly. You can see him drag the snare for the notes but they don't come out on here.You know that Will knows this beat like the back of his hand.

    Bonham played a killer Purdie shuffle.. Calhoun played it like rock, much simpler. Shows the level of talent of Bonzo, ahead and on top of many others.

  • @HarrrySpider

    Simon Philips didn't play THIS song at this gig... WHY? the dude that played with TOTO, who's song Rosanna, had a beat that Jeff Porcaro said he "borrowed" from THIS song...
    just my opinion that Simon would have TORN this up... and Mr Calhoun could have played something more fitting to his styles... no?

  • @MrMarkpark

    I understand that everyone will have their own interpretation of a song but without the halftime shuffle beat it's just not good. That beat actually makes the song. Sorry to be a hater.

    I hope John bomham comes back as a ghost to play “ cult of persolaity”. think of it this way. John dropped those chops never hearing a take. John , is king. Play it out, a will knows, John couldn’t drop what will did, Will could never or any other drummer drop what he did

    ouch.... ummm WTH?? Why do so many great drummers f' up bonzo?? they are not self taught too much tech not enough feel. And this was closer than the others I watched from this series. Also this sad band is rank at best... very, very rank
    this also dont help with the feel. I remember this old guy teaching me big band/ swing after a bad night ,on my part, he asked me to play something l liked. so out came the zep.He's busy writeing the drum notation as I played. I finish and he says... sounds cool BUT.. this is all wrong. I run home get my record play the song for him. Once again he's writeing away. He says damn you played it the same.. he said bono needed drum lesson cause he didnt play correctly.... this is wrong, that's wrong,this dont belong there, all while shaking his notations at me. I just said ,maybe, but it sounds awesome he made me get all my zep records . I spent the 2 months teaching him led zepplin and boy this great drummer had such a hard time playing some songs that I found easy... I never forgot it

    For a professional drummer that is terrible, looks like a deer caught in the headlights. But in his defence no one can play it like Bonzo.

    Even without sound, this guy is putting far too much effort and playing way too hard.
    You have to relax and swing, otherwise go home.
