- Japanese denim has been named the highest quality raw selvedge denim available on the market. And with a ton of history, time, and experience in the selvedge denim jeans game, it's really no wonder why. The Japanese were able to hone in on the literal pinnacle of what made American workwear so good, and perfected it in their own right to create the best selvedge denim that we all know and love today.
The 1970s to the 1990s has a lot, and I mean A LOT of history when it comes to denim as a selvedge whole. And with that history, the 1980s and the 1990s sparked the japanese selvedge denim craze we all know and love today. All of this started with Studio D'Artisan, the first of the Osaka Five of japanese raw selvedge denim brands which contributed to the catalyst of raw denim manufacturing in Japan.
In 1986, after having struggled to sell jeans since 1979, Shigeharu Tagaki finally cracked the code with the Studio D'Artisan SD-D01 denim, which was the jean that everyone in Japan fell in love with! This is where it all starts. And today, we have a re-release of these jeans in hand, and we dive into that history today!

been really liking your channel bro keep it up! i can tell you put a lot of time and effort into your vids! 🔥
Thank you so much bro I really appreciate that! Yeah bro for real it is time consuming but I genuinely have fun developing content and having these discussions with you guys man fr fr 🙏🏽🔥 Much love thank you so much for the support 😁
Just bought a pair of SD101’s on my trip to Japan and have been loving them! Thank you so much for a great video explaining the history:)
I’ve got the same exact pair, also purchased them from Blue in Green. I typically wear a 38 in Japanese sizes, but went 40 with these. The fit is so baggy, I get complemented on them all the time. I wear them even on the hottest days which you can do because of how baggy they are. And I’ve got to agree the blue indigo hue on these is more unique than any other pair I own, they will fade so awesome.
Cheers my brother thanks for sharing! I hope they have been serving you long and well my friend 🫡 How long have you had them may I ask? And how did they fade down? 👀 I LOVE the fit on these!
@@AlejandroJomar I haven't had them too long, maybe 3/4 months. I am already noticing the fade on these and actually gave them their first wash only yesterday. They fit even better now after first wash, and the texture and color of these is unlike anything else I have. I have the Levis 501 limited edition which these are based off of and even the color and texture on those doesn't compare to these. What I love about the Levis though is they are only 10oz and really great for summer too. BUT they do not have the baggy factor like these, they are still straight leg but more formal i'd say. The SDA pair are so fun and oversized, totally out of the box and playful.
But fire video nonetheless Japanese denim is where it’s at nowadays! Love the traditional crafting, selvedge lines, rivets amazing pieces
Thx for the video . Just ordered my first Studio d’artisan pair of jeans : a OD+SDA "Kasezome" Indigo x Dorozome Sashiko Selvedge Pants (Relax Tapered).
I have no advice on how to pronounce Japanese names but about French ones , I have one : you shouldn’t say « studio d artisan » but « studio dartisan » like the d and artisan are part of a same word . Dar-te-zan if you prefer
Should I size down one? Do these run big?
TCB
TCB’s are fire! 🔥🔥

plz do a fade review
What about Big John!?
It would seem I may be wrong about Studio D’Artisan being the first! You have given me an interesting video idea to deep dive into this and possibly correct my historical inaccuracy, which I thank you for! 😁 Interesting how I’ve never heard of these guys! Thank you for bringing this up! 🙏🏽
The first Japanese jeans.
Wow I thought big John rare predated them! I love SDA though
This video is not accurate. Needs more research.
Please feel free to explain as I plan on making a part two and would love some insight
As far as I’m concerned, according to my sources almost all of this info is correct, but someone brought up the Big John thing which I definitely missed, is that what you’re referring to? But regardless there is definitely no denying that the D-01 model was pivotal in creating the Osaka Five and popularizing Japanese Denim to the entirety of the planet. Is there something that I missed in this?
By the way I’m not trying to be sarcastic, I am genuinely inquiring lol 😅🥲
I will not make research for you.
The claims from SDA are not all correct. The point about Big John is a part of that
@@amBullseye lmfao okay bro 😂
@AlejandroJomar you laugh about it, but you make a 12 minute video where you share data as facts when it is mostly marketing for that product.
Yet when pointed that something is incorrect you fail to see it.
It's good to say that you are willing to learn but it's even better to walk the walk.
So that is not all negative from my end, I do like the enthusiasm over these amazing Japanese garments
