Like most people, the first rums I ever tried were Bacardi and Captain Morgan. But the first rum I ever actually liked was the Kraken. That piqued my interest into trying more rums and I soon discovered that black and darker rums in general are my preference. Especially for sipping neat. Currently my favorite are Mocambo 20 year aged rum and Ron Barcelo Imperial. I strongly recommend trying these if you haven't yet.
Another mixer I would suggest for dark rums is The Manhattan Special which is an Italian espresso soda. That or something similar but I don't know any other brands that make espresso soda. If you don't want the effervescence of soda but still enjoy prominent coffee notes, dark rums mix quite well with Kahlua as well.
Can't deny it's a great Rum. It's just never hit the spot for me. Not with all the widely available Dark Rums out there now. Worthy 109, Pussers Gunpowder, Plantation OFTD, they're epic Rums for those kinds of Cocktails.
Nah it'll be fine...as long as it's not in direct sunlight, a hot place, or an extremely cold place. Room Temp will be fine for ages. Mind you, Don't expect the quality to be the same 5 years later. It won't be "off", far from it. But it won't be as it was originally, simply becasue of a touch of oxidisation. But in some cases, it "may" be better...
Steve, you said you would use dark rum in a dark and stormy but not in a ginger ale, what's the difference? Isn't a dark and stormy just a dark rum and ginger ale?
A Dark 'n Stormy is Ginger Beer. Ginger Beer is very different to Ginger Ale. Dark Rums are great with Ginger Beer, but for me, IMO and Ginger Ale is way too light to hold up to the rich tastes of a Dark Rum.
Yup. Mainly cos it’s called “Original Dark”. But it’s a weird one. Cos it’s not Like Goslings or Myers. But it’s also not like Appleton Signature or Mount Gay Eclipse…but there the Rums Plantation kinda markets it against. Basically it was AGs experiment to see how little “Caramel” or “Dark Sugar” they could use to make it taste like a “Dark Rum” without it actually really looking like one.
Yeah I’ve had it. Don’t be confused by Scottish though. It’s not Scottish. By sheer definition, Demerara Rum is from Guyana. So in that sense it’s similar to the likes of El Dorado. OVD is a Scottish Brand. But it’s not a Scottish Rum like Ninefold, Sugar House, Mattuga, Island Slice, Gow etc etc. They are 100% Distilled in Scotland Scottish Rums.
@Steve the Barman Loved your response & thank you for that! I appreciate that other videos covered that Dark-Rum but no videos & taste-test of OVD on your channel, yet, give us a video about those Rum?

Perfect, your last "what is dark rum" video is one I go back to often. Appreciate the video lots!

Worthy to mention Gosling's Black Seal. THE rum for Dark and Stormies. Plus I think it is one of the better tasting black rums.

Hiya Steve great videos . Just wondering if rum has a shelf life and it gets worse? Open Vs unopened make a difference?

@@StevetheBarmanUK thanks, I have always used them in cocktails interchangeably, my bad!
@@RichardBarclay ginger beer is far spicier than ginger ale. Try them side by side and you'll see the difference.
I always associate plantation od as dark am I wrong ?
You're not wrong

I don't think you have ever, ever, covered the Scottish rum O.V.D rum. Something to try?
