    Person Description
    Rian Craig Johnson (born December 17, 1973) is an American filmmaker. He made his directorial debut with the neo-noir mystery film Brick (2005), which received positive reviews and grossed nearly $4 million on a $450,000 budget. Transitioning to higher-profile films, Johnson achieved mainstream recognition for writing and directing the science-fiction thriller Looper (2012) to critical and commercial success. Johnson landed his largest project when he wrote and directed the space opera Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), which grossed over $1 billion. He returned to the mystery genre with Knives Out (2019) and its sequel Glass Onion (2022), both of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively.
    Additionally, Johnson is also known for directing three highly acclaimed episodes for the television series Breaking Bad (2008-2013), namely "Ozymandias", "Fly", and "Fifty-One"; for the latter, he received the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing - Drama Series in 2013. He also created a murder mystery series titled Poker Face for Peacock with Natasha Lyonne. Johnson was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2023.

    People will try to gaslight others and convince them that the prequels where hated and ruined the franchise. When they try to do that to me, I ask them "why is there SO MUCH prequel content then?" Republic Commando, The Battlefront and BF's reboot franchise, and several cartoons and movies. If no one liked the prequels, who were they marketing that stuff to?

    • @dancorneanu9144
      @dancorneanu9144 23 дня назад +2

      That's the secret to marketing. People buy what they like. That is why people bought Transformers, He Man ot TMNT toys. Everyone wanted a Darth Maul toy, a Jedi figurine, Clone Troopers and Droids for the armies they were building, Plaques novels, Venerator kits, Anakin vs Obi Wan posters, pod racing videogames. Even Jar Jar sold better than most ST merch. Remember the Pepsy adds? ST merch is on shelfs today. The only content they sell is the battered horse of the PT. They try to milk the thing they first distanced themselves from.

    • @GreatFox42
      @GreatFox42 22 дня назад +1

      Because I think even most of the haters would admit there's still stuff to like about the Prequels. The era/setting itself is cool, many of the ship designs are cool, the Sith antagonists are cool, Maul looked _super_ cool and had a double-bladed lightsaber, the lightsaber duels were some of the most intense and choreographed fights in all of cinema...
      And since the marketing was geared towards older kids and tweens, they ate all that stuff up. There was still stuff for them to cling to.
      You also couldn't say that the prequels were lazy. Whether you liked the prequels or not, Lucas had a vision and he made that vision a reality. It had _heart._ If it was lazy it would just rehash the OT. Whether you liked that vision or not is a different discussion, but it was anything but lazy or a cash-grab.

    8:38 What really gives this away is that never once is it ever referred to as the "light side" in George Lucas' movies. Just as there's no "light side of the moon". There's the moon, and the dark side of the moon. There's the Force, and the dark side of the Force. The corruption of goodness.
    So yeah, restoring balance isn't balancing the two halves, it's eradicating the corruption and restoring purity.
    To their credit, though, Mace Windu's remarks in Episode III do greatly aid the misconception. "It's possible we misunderstood the prophecy," he says, shortly before the Chosen One and natural causes eliminate every single Force user slowly over the course of 20 years, except for Luke, who uses both "light" and dark powers (he Force Choked a pig-man :/). I can't really blame people, I held that misconception for a long time because of that line, myself.

He was a few rows ahead of myself. As the movie went on and came to an end. I didn't feel like I just saw a Star Wars movie. I wondered what was wrong with me. Normally I have stayed to the very end of the credits for EVERY Star Wars movie I ever saw. I saw the guy dressed as Kylo Ren, bolt from the movie theatre just as I was. So I knew I wasn't alone in my feelings. Then Rian and Disney started blaming the fans and kicking the people who support by way of buying things right in the face. Ever since that movie, I have not paid to see anymore of Disney's Star Wars CRAP. I did manage to catch Solo a Star Wars Story on a free to watch web site and understood why it "really" bombed. Not because I didn't see it, it really destroyed what I would have considered a decent Han Solo origin story polluting it with social politics and annoying characters. I'm surprised Disney can get any movies financially backed these days. They keep loosing money because they keep pushing "The Message". I guess they won't learn until they loose everything.

    JJ Abrams making The Force Awakens the way that he did paved the way for The Last Jedi. Obviously Rian Johnson had his own way with The Last Jedi, but had the previous installment been different, then perhaps the way Luke, the force and other things that were handled in The Last Jedi could have been a lot better, especially if they didn’t let Rian do whatever he wanted. But Rian Johnson did things his way and well we now have The Last Jedi. I still remember a video around the time Disney bought Lucasfilm where he was asked if he did a Star Wars film and what he’d like to do with it and his response was basically he wouldn’t want everybody loving it. He’d want half the people who saw it to love it and the other half to hate it. Nothing in between where you liked some stuff, but disliked other stuff. Had to be you either love it or hate it. With that in mind, makes even more sense why The Last Jedi was the way that it was. Thank god he’s never getting his trilogy made because with the attitude he had making TLJ, I’m sure he’d continue making that trilogy the way he’s already contributed to “Star Wars”. Plus whenever he’s said Empire Strikes Back was divisive with fans, it’s obvious he’s purposely misleading people to think that because fans of the time really enjoyed or loved Empire when it came out, the mixed reception was with critics not fans and he has to know that. And I agree that under George Lucas, the books and comics of the expanded universe was a lot better. Yeah some things would overlap with other things the more time goes where so many stories are told outside of the George Lucas films, but George Lucas would be involved and approve of what did and didn’t go into the books and comics regarding storylines and characters. This is a great video man and a great series. Keep up the great work and take care!

      I think the ST could have been salvaged somewhat if we at least got the original ep9 duel of the fates. while it wasn't perfect it didn't backpedal on the decisions made in TLJ which is way more admirable than directors going NO U NO U back and forth and shitting up the trilogy. Could it make it as good as the PT or even the OT? no, but I don't think we would hate them all nearly as much. instead we got a terrible ROTJ ripoff with 1000x less soul

For the most part Disney hasn’t had a hand in the Movies, Kathleen has been doing a fine job Messing it up on her own, that said, Disney renewing her contract continually is either them not caring or them having no choice due to a clause they never should have allowed.

      According to Dave George told him the EU wasn't canon when they were making Clone Wars and to ignore it. That is how you get things like Morriban instead of Korriban, and Boba Fett and Jango not being Mandalorian.

    It's kind of amazing how OT purists were on Disney's side and wanted Lucas gone, but weren't happy with how Luke was ruined in Last Jedi. They complained about the Force Awakens being a remake when they wanted the flavor of the OT to be continued, and not the style of the prequel. Even if Disney SW ended up being off brand or at best New Coke.

    Never heard of you until this slid into my rec's. I relate strongly to that impassioned rant at the start. I, too, am a prequel fan and big EU fan. Revenge of the Sith is my favorite movie of the six and I mean unironically. I enjoy that movie so much.
    As for the EU, I literally spent half of my teenage years practically studying it. I hated school and had a crappy home life, so the EU was a major escape for me. I was always a history nerd, enjoying that as my favorite subject in school, and studying the EU was like studying a history that wasn't ours. It was fun. If I had all my schoolwork done in study hall, I'd either have my nose in a Star Wars novel or comic, or I'd be in the computer lab looking random stuff on Wookiepedia. I had many of the games (Rogue Squadron is an amazing quadrilogy), I watched the movies frequently, both from the perspective of the movies by themselves, and as an EU nerd knowing all the things happening off-camera.
    Star Wars was a _big_ deal for me. It also influenced the way I look at media a lot, and the importance of escapism. Even if Star Wars had the occasional, subtle political take, the key takeaway that it _was_ subtle and easy to ignore or not even notice. Which is how it should be. Preachy media sucks and it doesn't matter who's receiving it. For those who agree with it, it will have no effect. For those who don't, well they just lost out on a story. Such things should almost always be in the background. Especially since the entire point of Star Wars' creation was so that kids could grow up with fairy tales again. Those movies are timeless because any subtle political messaging _is_ easily missed and that's the point. They will and have outlived the politics contemporary to the era of their making. Something Disney Star Wars will never understand.
    And the EU... The EU doesn't get enough credit, and it didn't back in the day either. I consider the entirety of the EU a work of art unto itself. Nothing like that ever really existed before. An immense tapestry that any author, artist, game designer, etc. could add to, and have it _mean_ something. Have it _stick._ It gave purpose and meaning to even the less quality additions. With a handful of exceptions, if you had a Star Wars something in your hand, it was probably canon in some way. Engaging with the story then gave you a clearer look into this universe that isn't ours, yet has almost as much detail. It was so _unique_ that eventually a few other brands tried it out. I seem to recall the Star Trek novels started trying to form a similar cohesive EU of their own. And that's _great._ That's _awesome._ The EU was cool enough to deserve to have attempts to follow it. It was beautiful.
    I studied the EU like a subject of its own. I just kept wanting to learn more, because it was fun. And it was something to focus on, put my energy towards something I cared about. Even the bad parts I was happy to learn about. And to be honest... I even had intentions of adding to it myself one day. I had no delusions that I'd be creating anything like the Thrawn trilogy, but I'd be honored to add to the EU even in a small way. Maybe give some other teen an escape.
    That dream is dead now. And so is the wonder that was the EU. When I heard that was happening a lot of my interest in Star Wars died with it. I tried to then just hang on to the movies but as the brand sunk further and further, I found it more and more difficult to enjoy the movies. I only kept thinking about what was lost, both George's magic touch and the EU.
    It's really depressing what Star Wars has become. It's now antithetical in every possible way to what the original six films stood for.
    I hate you so much, Disney. There aren't enough words in any language on Earth past or present to express the _depth_ of my hatred for this corporation. You destroyed a beautiful piece of art. You destroyed my dream, as well as any hope of a future kid seeking an escape to find it in the Star Wars saga.
    _Please_ go bankrupt.

    Here’s the thing about the Ozymandias thing:
    1) The show had been building up to it for nearly 5 seasons and so it was extremely hard to get wrong
    2)Vince had full writing authority and considering people praise Ozymandias mainly for its writing, I think that’s important to remember
    While obviously the directing in Ozymandias is phenomenal, as is his directing in Fly, you have to keep in mind that he’s actually a pretty good director in some aspects, the problem is that he’s a bad writer

    The Prequels love them or hate them lead to so much expanded material and it never felt like Star Wars went away as long as you were someone who enjoyed anything aside from live action content. The Sequels gave us so little, most of the books are about filling in the massive holes those movies left behind, stuff set so far away from the sequels they don't have to worry about them.
    Prequel era content never felt the need to dance around the trilogy or ignore it. They reveled in it. Simply because there was actually something there to expand. Look at all the content they made out of the time between TPM and AOTC, and then The Clone Wars itself.
    There is an actual time gap between TLJ and TROS but you'd never know it. Simply because, no one and I repeat NO ONE seems to want to touch that time period. Let alone post TROS. They're so afraid of doing anything set in or around the sequel trilogy ever since TLJ it's honestly insane.

It was the only moment that series was even praised (only saved by Hayden and his skills) and it was George' fault for the series? He didn't even touch the series. The only good thing in there was the small thing tangentially related to George.

    My analogy for RJ's Starwars: imagine seeing a poster for an Aerosmith cover band and thinking, "Yeah, I like Aerosmith, I'll go along." You know it won't be the real original band but they're gonna dress up and play the songs - it'll look and sound like the real thing so cool enough. Then they come out on stage and say "Hey, no we're gonna toss the Aerosmith songs backward over our shoulder and play our OWN songs instead!" And their own songs are aggressively political, sound nothing like Aerosmith, as though they don't even know or like Aerosmith, and in between songs they insult the audience: "What's wrong man-babies, can't you handle our ideas, don't like having your expectations subverted man-babies your Snoke theory sucks fuck you!"
