After the Rebels won, there were no more stormtroopers in my version of the third trilogy. (...) Episode VII, VIII, and IX would take ideas from what happened after the Iraq War. "Okay, you fought the war, you killed everybody, now what are you going to do?" Rebuilding afterwards is harder than starting a rebellion or fighting the war. When you win the war and you disband the opposing army, what do they do? The stormtroopers would be like Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist fighters that joined ISIS and kept on fighting. The stormtroopers refuse to give up when the Republic win. They want to be stormtroopers forever, so they go to a far corner of the galaxy, start their own country and their own rebellion. There's a power vacuum so gangsters, like the Hutts, are taking advantage of the situation, and there is chaos. The key person is Darth Maul, who had been resurrected in The Clone Wars cartoons - he brings all the gangs together. (...) Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy. Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because, as the Empire falls, he takes over. The movies are about how Leia - I mean, who else is going to be the leader? - is trying to build the Republic. They still have the apparatus of the Republic but they have to get it under control from the gangsters. That was the main story. It starts out a few years after Return of the Jedi and we establish pretty quickly that there's this underworld, there are these offshoot stormtroopers who started their own planets, and that Luke is trying to restart the Jedi. He puts the word out, so out of 100,000 Jedi, maybe 50 or 100 are left. The Jedi have to grow again from scratch, so Luke has to find two- and three-year-olds, and train them. It'll be 20 years before you have a new generation of Jedi. By the end of the trilogy Luke would have rebuilt much of the Jedi, and we would have the renewal of the New Republic, with Leia, Senator Organa, becoming the Supreme Chancellor in charge of everything. - George Lucas “What I wish is that [Disney] had been more accepting of [George Lucas]’ guidance and advice. Because he had an outline for '7', '8' and '9'. And it is vastly different to what they have done.”-Mark Hamill 2017 George Lucas’s Version Of Luke for his sequels has nothing in common with The Last Jedi’s version of Luke. The Luke Lucas describes for his sequels isn’t a trauma col. who has mental issues. He rebuilds The Jedi Order. Trains Leia, & The Next Generation before he dies. Lucas’s ideas weren’t used in Disney’s sequels and he expressed as much himself. “"Uh, I don't know. I mean, I've kind of lost control of Star Wars, so it's going off in a different path than what I intended. But the first six are very much mine, and my philosophy.”-George Lucas If you want a better idea of what George actually had in mine, these coming from his mouth and not from the mouths of people he’s worked with I’d suggest watching this: ruclips.net/video/6qDQ5Ae0AkA/видео.htmlsi=lHi7nx-LKjHMhGwq
@@bendu8282 Consider what Lucas did with Obiwan in the OG, Luke was gonna be Paul Atreides !!! And Rian Johnson did just that but with an uplifting ending.
I don't look at it as "What if George Lucas made the last jedi" because he did specifically say they didn't want him around. I look at it as, what would George Lucas's *Episode 8* be like? You make some great comparisons and it is clear Rian was definitely honouring George's visual Filmmaking style, but as a storyteller and respecting the characters George created; Rian pretty much dropped the ball big time. Rian decidedly wrote the Jedi Master Luke Skywalker to walk straight into his nephew's hut at night, while carrying his green lightsaber on him. That right there goes completely against the character *Luke Skywalker*.
A George Lucas sequel trilogy would have been very interesting to see, but let’s face it, it would likely have been just as if not more divisive than the Disney sequels.
This is by far the most genuine take I've ever heard. You're not just shouting at the top of your lungs that Disney ruined Star Wars or that Star Wars went woke. You actually give substance to what you say and I really appreciate that. So many of the main Star Wars RUclipsrs we'll just harp on buzzwords will just harp on buzz words and say nothing of value.
Well, you have to admit. The lucas version of the whole trilogy would be far more cohesive than the current trilogy no matter how divisive. I think it Really shows that the films were written by different peoples. The rise of skywalker especially just feels like it was trying to "fix" what happened in the last jedi a little too hard. "Oh, uhh no! Rey isn't a nobody! Look! She's connected to someone important!" I could go on, but the point stands. What the sequels needed in my opinion was a single unified vision. And Lucas would have granted that. For better or for worse. Also, I get that the nobody thing could just have been Rey's fears manifesting, but when I watched the film, it didn't come across that way to me.
JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio have both said it was never their intention to fix Rian Johnson’s film and overall I believe them because there’s plenty in it that supports the previous movie. While I do agree the trilogy could’ve been more cohesive and that I don’t prefer the Palpatine connection the trilogy still works and they did the reveal in TROS to where what we already learned is overall still true. Her parents really were nobodies and I love that aspect of her character.
@@mastersith3523 true. Palpatine already said in Revenge Of The Sith if he and Vader work together they can discovered the secret to cheat death. This is changes everything what we learned in original trilogy make Palpatine's death is too easy.

@@StarWarsCentralized So, Kylo and Luke’s backstories in broad strokes are ok, but I always felt like Luke even getting as far as igniting his lightsaber went a bit far in the version we have, and the lack of showing what was going on in Kylo’s head in the movie (I hate that some key details are in comics/books). Would been something a bit more tangible, and Luke having more nuance would just be better overall. The FO being the ones on the backfoot just makes more sense, and would be a nice flipping of the script. Plus a lot of my other issues come from the lack of big overarching world elements and details. In the initial bomber scene even, Johnson seems to want the idea of a bomber raid, but kinda messes it up because the bombers don’t feel heavy, or like they’re built their built to take a pounding on the way in like a Fortress or Lancaster is generally seen as. It’s a small element, but it’s one of those details that’s hard to quite ignore.
well blame Mike stocklasa/mr plinkett from redlettermedia for that in his Star Trek 2009 he stated that he wanted JJ to direct the sequels because plinkett only cares about action scenes not calm and political scenes even (though they are important elements of the prequel era of Star Wars) and he also threw a jab on George Lucas that he should direct people into seats in the theatre
@@AgentsofPRIDEGrow up, lmao. You act like you're going to cry over the fact that an Internet film critic and comedian made a joke about a man worth billions of dollars. And the fact that you're more butthurt about someone on the Internet criticizing a massive franchise for featuring poor writing and filmmaking than you are about said massive franchise featuring that poor writing and filmmaking in the first place really speaks volumes as to why Star Wars has been able to get away with producing mountains of slop in all the decades since it peaked with Empire Strikes Back.
I think you missed the cracks for the egg... Johnson's script made certain key choices that "divided the fandom". A broken Luke wasn't the problem, but having him toss his lightsaber and try to kill his "irredeemable" nephew was too far out of character. Having Rose preach to Finn a former slave soldier about injustice and freedom, while he was being reduced from secondary lead to a joke character was an issue... Rei not actually getting trained but gaining immense power, Haldo's unrealistic and counter productive "leadership" were serious issues. The technical lore that was inconsistent with the rest of star wars (e.g. Haldo maneuvers and poorly thought out bombing sequences). A clunky poorly conceived space chase as the basis of the side narrative. All these issues are what most OG fans and critical viewers had a problem with, it didn't just show a disregard for the lore, but a disregard for logic, consistency and world building.
I disagree on logic and consistency! TLJ follows up TFA well and is a very worthy chapter in Star Wars IMO. The logic of it all works fine and well for me, I’m sorry if it didn’t for you.
I hate to say it man, but anyone too delusional and/or dumb to see all the hilariously glaring issues with TLJ's atrocious script is probably not going to be swayed by you pointing some of it out. TLJ's writing is kind of issue that became divided enough that you now either see it as it is or you don't.
Well, I don't one hundred percent agree on all those points - but yeah, about 70 percent of those. It's often all about execution. Also, whilst I can see Luke losing faith, and even running away - the STAYING away, so long, without explanation, is hard to argue for.
4:25 It should noted that at one point, Lucas was supposed to direct Apocalypse Now, but he eventually moved on to direct American Graffti and Star Wars because it was in development hell for so long.
TLJ is the most "lucas" like out of the three by far. The cgi animals, cringe romance, critique on war profiteering, exiled luke, and big visual emphasis is all up his alley. Solo felt very similar to Lucas as well.
@@whateverwhatever4476 oh you poor little thing... Any actual Star Wars fan knows this video is full of lies and misinformation. Lol a quick RUclips search of George Lucas's sequel Trilogy will prove that.. if you're going to talk out of your ass then at least have at least a single hint of knowing what you are talking about lolololol
Great video. I pretty much agree with your final thoughts about TLJ being the most Lucas-like of the sequels. It's my favorite one if I had to choose. Albeit still kind of clunky and hampered by what JJ set up imo. But I think it's hard to predict what George's Lucas' The Last Jedi would've been because a lot of the ideas in it were taken from his treatment for Episode VII according to Pablo Hidalgo (the Last Jedi tie-in Leia novel Bloodline was also based on ideas from the Michael Arndt Episode VII draft so that might've given us some indication of the politics George wanted to infuse his sequels with), but yeah the structure of the story seemed all different. Based on Pablo's comments and the sequel art books, Han and Leia's son was in the male lead Finn role alongside the heroine and fell to the dark side over the course of the trilogy rather than it being an established fact like Kylo in TFA. Also George said in Charlie Rose interview I think that his sequels were about the grandkids plural, that and other hints lead me to believe that the heroine was Han and Leia's daughter. So they were kind of a version of Jacen and Jaina I guess. But because Lucas read the Dark Horse comics that seemed to be the primary EU influence, not the novels. so we had Talon seducing the son like she seduced Cade Skywalker in Legacy, even Maul's return intentionally or not kind of parallels Darth Krayt/A'Sharad Hett since they're both prequel era characters who'd been forgotten by the galaxy but return to fill the power vacuum later. Sounds like it would've echoed Legends material a little but with George's own spin, not unlike Rise of Skywalker having elements of Dark Empire. Mainly reminds me of how they adapted Quinlan Vos for Clone Wars/Dark Disciple and took some elements from the Dark Horse comics, but it was overall a reimagining. And another mythological influence Rian Johnson talked about for Last Jedi was the Arthurian Grail Legend, with Luke being the wounded Fisher King. Might've been where Lucas was drawing inspiration from as well given his Colonel Kurtz comments. Joseph Campbell talked a lot about that and we know Lucas was a student of his. So I liked that stuff. The Luke Rashomon thing I'm iffy on because I think he needed more development to understand his perspective and despair in that moment. Unfortunately only getting one movie means rushing through everything. Would've been nice to get more Jedi Master Luke Skywalker glimpsed at the end of Last Jedi and a little in Rise of Skywalker..
Really awesome comment and response. Thanks so much for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m going to make a video about TLJ’s depiction of Luke soon and I’ve already got the Arthurian legends in my sources list.
@@StarWarsCentralized That's great I like to hear people's readings of it. I first heard the Fisher King thing from Holonet Marauders video on Rey's arc and how it aligns with the Heroine's Journey, so it'd be nice to get something like that analyzing Luke's TLJ arc as well.
You perfectly described what I feel about TLJ, it’s the most “Lucas Like” of the sequels. I still don’t like the sequel trilogy but TLJ is the most enjoyable for me out of a trilogy where two of the three “films” have absolutely nothing to say, just corporate “marvelized” spectacle for money, and TLJ still doesn’t have much to say nor does it communicate it very well AT ALL but it’s a low bar, and they pass it.
Imagine if they had went more inline with George's plans and he had accepted the consulting role that was offered to him and if JJ Abrams had agreed to direct all three movies instead of just seven and nine?
George Lucas was good friends with Francis Ford Coppola, so much so that he was even considered to direct Apoc Now at one point, and the two of them established American Zoetrope together. Lucas respected Coppola. It is absolutely fascinating that in George's treatments he was looking at this older version of Luke as more of a "Col. Kurtz" type figure; but you neglected to mention that before Kurtz became a *Villain* he was hailed as a maverick Soldier, he had even inspired many of his own men to follow him deep into the Jungle, and hundreds of even Vietcong ended up following him. So what's interesting and very intriguing here is the "Luke Skywalker" George was exploring in his treatments, may not have been just a "broken, shell of a man". He quite possibly could have been something of a mix between Kurtz and other archetypal figures. Just think if the Luke in George's treatments had his own followers somewhere, that he had perhaps left when he went into his self-imposed exile.
on a side note, i feel like in George's version, all of that talk about the microbiotic world, the midi-chlorians, and the Whills, would would have heen explored during Luke and Rey's training scenes. hell Luke learning about it and exploring it could even explain his exhile to a degree

I kept tellin people that johnson was a good choice because he has alot in common with lucas. I wouldnt expect a new lucas film to be how we want it to be. Its problems politically and specifically character depictions would be different. I saw this as an less good version of empire strikes back for what it was trying to do. It was always going to be decisive. Maybe if fin and reys story archs and the first orders goals were clearly established, maybe we could have a great film. Especially if they had committed to it for rise of skywalker. That film could have redeemed alot of what the last Jedi was trying to establish.
I legitimately listened to your video, diagree with every opinion you have (the facts you present I can definitely believe) and I really am gonna stick to my opinion that no more Star Wars movies should have been made, no more shows, anything after the prequels, UNLESS Timothy Zahn ran everything and had his finger in it. He's the only one I can trust to make good Star Wars.
Yeah but the whole section with Snoke would have been different. This idea of a light character being born because of a dark side user does not sound like something Lucas would do. Balance is not equal parts light and dark.
Yes, about the only things Disney discarded were Lucas' weirdo bugs element, that they rightly knew wouldn't translate at all well with fans. The rest of his ideas were shown in the finished film, only with far better dialogue and less slapstick.
The sequel trilogy is a fascinating case study of lack of planning and 0 understanding of characters or themes. It's completely surface-level. There is nothing to latch onto in these movies other than the visuals. It's kinda funny, but Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is surprisingly similar to these and I called that "Snyder playing with his action figures again." And that's a fitting description for the sequels too: It's just bunch of action figures slamming into one another.
@@marcosrecio4062 I can’t see how someone can watch the sequels and not see them as a love letter to Star Wars as a series, not coddling the story and characters
Murdering uncle luke, dead beat solo, no arc ren, jar jar finn, and rey sue aside there are basically no memorable characters, aliens, nor designs, wich is mostly just things from the OT painted black. The less said about the story the better.
The books had a better sequel trilogy, about Han Lea and their children becoming Jedi, Luke having Mara Jade his wife and his son and the Jedi temple, Luke being the most feared person in the Galaxy. It was about Han’s and Leas Twins, son and daughter and the death of their third son, it enrages their son and he’s tricked into the darkside by a female Sith.
I don't know why , Dune , Harry Potter , LOTR, can follow the books and be massively successful but they had to rewrite starwars . Lucas may not of reconised them , but the old books were fantastic.
@@StarWarsCentralized *Disney trilogy... That's not the real sequel trilogy... Also, your claim that George Lucas had originally made Luke in exile has been confined by George Lucas himself... you actually managed to get sooo much wrong in this video and it's mind-boggling to me how people can actually still believe that literally anything from The Last Jedi is based off of ideas from George Lucas 😂
Luke being a pathetic loser wasn't. He came back to the fight with the main characters and then died in episode 9 after training leia. He told this to Paul Duncan for his Star Wars archive book. The search for Luke with a female lead was the only idea they took. That's what some fans choose not to understand because it hurts their bullshit narrative about lucas being responsible for TLJ ideas.
Just because the Sequels took a few broad plotlines and barebones character descriptions from George does not mean they at all took their stories directly from what George intended.
I honestly have no idea how I should feel about this video essay. I disagree with a few things you said about the last jedi. In my personal opinion the last jedi is horrific. But Rian Johnson is an outstanding director and it shows, even in the last jedi. Things I hated though was what the movie did to Finns character. John Boyega deserved to be a jedi, just like the force awakens lead us to believe. They turned his character into a complete joke. Plus Disney humor is so bad in my opinion. You actually convinced me to re watch it though. Like, I know there's good stuff there.
finn was never going to be a jedi, not sure what fans like you were thinking since TFA never implied he was going to be a jedi, have you even seen the movie?
@@barkley8285 I didn't expect him to be a Jedi, but at least a decent character. One of the most beloved characters from the Force Awaken is the trooper that screams "Traitor!" To Finn. We were promised he had a greater role in TLJ and that he was part of a elite force of Stormtroopers, so what happened??. Instead of sending Finn in a stupid quasi James Bond side quest let him escape and become a grey character ala Boba Fett.
@barkley8285 I did. The farce awakens sucked but they definitely had lines of him talking about feeling the force. The scene that comes to mind is when they were flying the falcon and escaping jakku. Have you even seen the movie? I'm not sure why fans like you come up with this.
I truly can't comprehend having such a burning hatred for a movie that seven years later, one feels obligated to search out videos about it, clearly not watch them, and leave hate comments. What a sad way to live life.
I think the beginning needed a rewrite. It should've started directly after the previous movie ended with instead of throwing away his lightsaber, Luke should've been shocked and begun to ask Rey how she found him, who sent Rey to Luke's whereabouts, how she found the lightsaber, she shouldn't be here and turn back now. As Rey struggles to respond to Luke's many questions, Luke angrily looks back down on his lightsaber and throws it away at the ocean below with more rage and then proceeds to walk past Rey telling her to just leave and that Luke is dead or something. After seeing Rey and Chewie convince Luke out of hiding we then cut back to the battle in space from the actual movie.
As a fellow Last Jedi fan, this video blew my mind. I knew that George Lucas was inspired by classic cinema, but I didn't know some scenes in A New Hope were send-ups to other movies like that! And seeing Rian Johnson do the same in his Star Wars outing is a cool parallel to a different era of cinema. I don't know if Rian Johnson's own rumored Star Wars trilogy is still a thing that's going to happen, but I would like to see him return to the franchise again one day. Take my sub and consider me a fan!
For however many film references the two directors would use, theirs is a fundamental, irreconcilable difference: Lucas does everything in service to telling his story, while Johnson does everything in service to expounding on the nature of story. It's narrative vs meta-narrative.
The Rashomon reference absolutely serves Rey’s story significantly, as it determines how she relates to Luke and Kylo, her two main relationships in the film.
@@StarWarsCentralized I'm familiar with Rashomon in the sense that I know it's a retelling of events from different viewpoints, but I haven't seen it to know whether shots from The Last Jedi are recreations from Rashomon - regardless, all I wanted to say what that shot recreations, plucked from the history of cinema, are wholly unnecessary to telling a good story. A New Hope is the hero's journey - that is, it follows a virtually instinctive narrative structure that has been with us for millennia. The Last Jedi, in contrast, is about the struggle to make a "Star War".

I think that maybe going forward, they could maybe use a few of George's ideas for an animated series set before or during the Sequel films. Not retconning the films, but adding more to them. I think some of the much more out there ideas, like the Whills and the Midi-Chlorians, would work better in animation, like the Yoda arc in Season 6 of the Clone Wars. Maybe Leia could have a similar story about accepting death and learns about Rey's relationship to Palpatine. If an animated series is set before TFA, I could also see Luke working with surviving Jedi from Order 66. There was concept art in The Mandalorian for Plo Koon, so that'd be a cool character dynamic of two similar but different Jedi. It could add more to the downfall of Luke's Jedi Academy. Overall despite my few problems, I do still enjoy most of The Last Jedi, with the exception of Canto Bight and how that arc was messy, and the specific choice to have Luke throw the lightsaber, even though I understand what Rian and JJ were going for and I like a flawed Luke.
I think you're approach is fair, I may not agree with your taste on Disney Star wars, but just because the fans that prefer legends don't want Disney to force their media on us, doesn't mean we should bully the fans that prefer Canon, after all were all Star wars fans let's not let Disney divide us
Nothing could've saved that dumpster fire of a movie, other than the studio actually writing out all three movies first before hiring on anyone to direct.
As much as I agree that Lucas's original sequel trilogy would've been divisive and hated more than the sequels. I still would've like to see it. I'm interested in what comentary or point he would try to get across in the Star Wars story at that time. To see what was the last thing he'd have to say with his characters in his last Trilogy before truly leaving it to the next generation. I love seeing what artists have to say before they're passing and how they're art changes over the course of they're life. Something tells me the exploration of the mediclorians and the microverse idea was more going to be a not so sutle exporation on what binds life together beyond what we can actually see. Of course thats my head cannon but yeah I'd love to see what he had in mind but j guess will never know. I also would've loved to see George Lucas push the Filmmaking to the absolute limit like with the prequels.

Wow, this was educational, informative and full of the love you have for Star Wars and it's radiates off of your voice even though you wait till the end to admit that you like the last jedi. I love The last Jedi for very different reasons, and I don't want to reiterate myself as I have in other comment sections as I do not feel like I should have to talk about my own personal struggles with depression and how watching Luke rise above was very important to me. But there's a lot of things that I love about this film and a lot of the characters journeys are part of it. I would like to thank you for bringing in the different visual influences for not just the last Jedi but even the original trilogy and being able to see those comparisons I see that Rian Johnson was able to get in a similar headspace when putting together the film. Which is interesting because I don't think that's always how he approaches film but for Star Wars he decided to be a little bit more closer to George Lucas's style which I appreciate. I had never seen the inspiration for the opening of the casino scene on Canto Byte. That was a really wonderful thing that you've allowed me to now have more knowledge and enjoy that part of the filmmaking process that made the final product of the movie. I agree with you on this point, I feel like The last Jedi in comparison to how George Lucas would have done it himself would have been grander and scale. I do feel that the version of the movie that we got was a little too small. Which is a shame because I feel like it's just a handful scenes could have made it bigger. When I was a kid my favorite movie of the prequels was attack of the clones. As I got older I find that it's hard to have favorite, because George has shortcomings in all three movies. They work together as a whole more so, and me being able to really pick one that I say is the definitive favorite of the prequels it's not as easy for me. But when I was younger I loved the second one, and I thought about why as you were talking about the grander scale of the last Jedi, at least in George Lucas's version, and I realize that attack of the clones is exactly the largest scale that we've ever seen for Star Wars movie. This is the start of the actual clone wars, there is political tension going on in the Senate, there's political tensions as planets seek to secede from the Republic to join the cis, we are introduced to the planet Kamino which exists technically in a mini Galaxy on the edge of the main one we know. We are introduced to the archive room of the Jedi Temple, something that is completely brand new and had never been shown before. We're introduced to so many different players from different parts of the galaxy. I think that the last Jedi would have been grander in a similar sense to attack of the clones. However I'm not sure if George Lucas's character work would have been as tight as Rian Johnson's. Regardless of how you feel about how he handled all of the characters and there are some that I think that very good arcs some that got mostly good arcs, and some who deserved way way better, I don't think George Lucas would have been able to do the same for so many characters. Case in point attack of the clones, I did not realize for many years after rewatching that film that count Dooku was Qui-Gon Jinn's master. That's the whole reason why count Dooku took Obi-Wan Kenobi aside to talk to him was because of that connection, George knew what he wanted to do but he didn't convey it well too the audience. And I feel like we would have similar problems in his version of The last Jedi. Regardless I do agree it would have definitely been his most different film and potentially his most interesting. I definitely think that Force ghost Yoda would have made a reappearance in his version as well. But that's my personal gut feeling. I know that there's no concept art, or draft to prove that that's the case, but it's such a powerful scene in the film I can't see George Lucas not doing it. Anyway you've learned a subscriber, I guess I'll binge the rest of your videos now.
Really really wonderful long comment! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts - I feel EXACTLY the same about Attack of the Clones too! @@StarWarsCentralized I would love to see that video when you eventually make it. I was telling my brother earlier today my issues with Lucas not being clear about AOTC. Not just with Dooku and Qui Gon's relationship, but with how Shmi's husband ended up in the hoover chair, it's a quick explanation that does not reach the audience on first watch necessarily. Even explaining Padme return for an important vote in the beginning of the movie isn't conveyed clearly. I love AOTC for being expensive and full of ideas the make the Star Wars galaxy bigger, but these little moments, character moments should have been given a chance to breathe. I'll be looking forward to seeing your thoughts on AOTC.
even if as similar in concept. George used screen testing and would not have knock knock jokes and an indifferent Luke . Yoda was in exile and was still able to be grounded and Stoic when needed even as a puppet.
Wish the prequels could be remade to show the true manner in which a good person can be corrupted. The originals actually show pretty well how a corrupt person can be saved. The prequels should be true to the New Hope scene where Obi Wan explains everything. Made in that tone, the entire Star Wars series would have been one of the greatest stories ever told. This is probably amongst the best scenes in all the movies, music and all. Wonder if someone will one day remake 6 movies.
Luke would have been way different. He would not have gone from the beacon of hope, willing to die to bring Anakin back to the light… to think about killing his nephew because of a glimpse he saw. And my god… the last Jedi was such an awful story.
Honestly, after experiencing the prequels and witnessing Lucas' attitude toward the franchise from the late 90s on...im not the least bit interested in his vision for the sequels. I still maintain that the sequels were just not necessary. We shouldve gotten a new, separate trilogy following a different group of characters. Han, Luke, and Leia had their story, and it was over. I had no interest in seeing their elder versions shuffling around on screen trying to be relevant. Lucas wouldve needed to do a sequel trilogy in the 90s. It was too late by 2015 Ultimately, its the reason why im not terribly aggravated with the sequels we received, despite them being mostly awful: they were completely superfluous. If Return of the Jedi had ended with some kind of cliffhanger element plugging some future story...then i could see wanting to continue that story. But it didnt.
Johnson is by far a better director and storyteller than JJ, perhaps if Johnson would have been given all 3 sequel films they could have been coherent and better all around. Great video
I generally agree with everything you're saying here but i feel i need to add that the Canto Bight sequence could have come right out of the prequels - politically focused but also extremely goofy. Very George.
I remember Pablo Hidalgo saying that Luke Skywalker dying in Episode VII was also in George Lucas' original version of his sequels. The Last Jedi was also the only sequel that George praised, calling it "beautifully made" and I think it's because it was the most loyal to his original idea.
I think the big issues with TLJ were that 1) it was part of the broader sequel trilogy which felt cobbled together and lacking in continuity 2) it focused too much on the newly introduced character of Rose. Given the lack of a prequel-like timeskip, the core trio should have been established in the first movie, to make the trilogy feel like one group’s story (shit even in the prequels introduced Anakin, Obi Wan, and Padmé in phantom menace even if it does focus more on Qui Gon but then he’s the OT Obi Wan analogue) 3) Too much telling too little showing 4) WAYY too much cheap comedy with the Luke scenes. Sure it mirrors the silliness of OT Yoda but Luke’s self-imposed exile isn’t not something that should have been taken that lightly “haha alien boobie milk, silly puffy animals”
The more that time passes, the more the pure insanity of TLJ backlash truly blows my mind. Like, I think the insanity around the film forever altered my perception of fandoms in general, not just Star Wars fandom. Fandom was crazy well before TLJ. I know. But the particular fervor and meltdown around TLJ was just...I honestly can't describe any other way than insane. Unhinged. It took on a degree of pure frenetic, unstable mania hitherto unseen in fandom spaces.
The Last Jedi misses entirely what George was teaching. Rian Johnson laughed at the very idea of the heroes journey, while George built Star Wars around it. The Last Jedi has moments and breathtaking visuals, but it fails to be the 2nd part of a trilogy, and instead of growing the themes, world and chemistry of the characters, it drives the entire story into the ground and kills off the resistance. There are so many logical holes in this movie that it us maddening. Plus, it is totally stupid there is a manhole cover into a tunnel right outside Dj's cell. Seriously?
@StarWarsCentralized Maul was the crimelord in Solo. Leia is a senator in Ahsoka. Luke is creating a new Jedi academy in TBOBF, Imperial remnants are organizing an army in all the series. Hope to see more about Leia's legacy in new movies or series. And what intrigued me more, Vader's grandchildren. Is this concept going to be revisited? Are we going to discover a missing Skywalker? And Talon? Is she going to become the new Vader? Hope to see his entire saga concepts incorporated in all the narrative.
TLJ brought something to Star Wars that had never been there before: Cynicism. Even in Revenge of the Sith, a movie that ended with the villain triumphing, there's still a chain of causality; things happen because of characters' choices, and had those choices been made differently, the ending would have changed. If Anakin had refused to help Palpatine at any point prior to killing Mace Windu, Palpatine would have lost. If Obi Wan hadn't spared Anakin, it would have changed the entire OT. Compare this to the major decisions in TLJ. Po takes heavy losses protecting the Resistance fleet; his choice was wrong. The superior alternative? Unclear and unexplained. Kylo Ren refrains from killing his mother, she ends up sucked into space anyway. Finn and Po try to disable the hyperspace tracker, but none of those efforts matter. Finn tries to sacrifice himself to stop the giant laser; that choice is irrelevant and saving his own life mattered more. It's wrong to try. Wrong to think your choices can make a difference. Wrong to want to know what your leader plans to do. All you can count on is the vague faith that you'll be saved at some future point. Every other Star Wars work had some positive vision for what it wanted to express, even if at times that vision was dull or dark. We can praise its visuals, broad themes and its references, but the core of any film is the story all of those things exist to tell, and a wealth of source material doesn't guarantee that it will be distilled into something new. TLJ was pure subversion; pure negative. And its only identity came from the other works whose norms it was subverting.
honestly i don’t like the sequels but that’s not the point we can argue about it for hours and changing no one’s mind the real problem with them (in my perspective) is that they were too vague for a normal star wars movie what we have been used to is for major events to be explained in a way in the movies for example the phantom menace when it released was something kind of unexpected but when you watch episode 2and 3 you see why it was needed in the sequels we don’t get enough explanation for many things (and i know many questions were answered in expanded universe but that is not accessible to everyone like me and it separates from the main line media ) for example why ray becomes near to ben power levels so quickly and many more that are in other comments i don’t have a problem with the story that much but it lacks enough context and depth in the movie itself in my point of view and could have been much better that didn’t made many of the og fans wanting it to be removed from the canon
If Lucas directed the sequel trilogy, we would've definitely got some killer bad ass lightsaber duels. Unlike the nonsense presented to us in all 3 movies, which was amateur. Although, I do understand some of your points, Reeon Johnson is decent director, I enjoyed Looper but that's about it. What was missing for me, was all the lore building of the Jedi and Sith, empire, rebellion, among other things. The disney movies were missing those, all promises and questions, never to be answered. All in all, I was disappointed in the sequels trilogy, haven't watched anything new Star Wars since The Last Jedi, but still regularly watch the Prequel and Original and read the legends novels(which are far superior)
Honestly the last jedi is a massive improvement on rise of Skywalker. Maybe if johnson had the whole trilogy or the last 2 to develop his ideas properly it could have been saved. The last jedi is likely my favourite out of the sequels but the casino section really holds it back. The fear of referencing the prequels meant that could have had more polictical world building but no senate hearings allowed.
I think, given the that they were made without any overall plan and with directors that were actively contradicting each other, the Sequel Trilogy didn't turn out too bad.
Fantastic video SWC! I think George's sequel trilogy ideas were respected a lot in TLJ and the other sequels, but I also respect the changes that other creative minds made :)
It's a fascinating video. I have not heard someone discuss George's ideas for his sequel trilogy; I only heard bits and pieces of information like the dark talon info and a few others, but never in-depth like this video has done. My opinion on the sequel trilogy is pretty sure mixed with some negative ones. It's overblown when it comes from someone who thinks Disney's ideas for Star Wars have not always been the best. Still, there have also been many exciting and well-received products they have produced under the banner of Disney. I think that, at that time, people's opinions on these movies changed to be more positive or not, but they had a greater understanding of the time of these films. I think these movies were affected by the cultural/political ramblings going on around the time of the release of this film, as I believe many things have been affected throughout the 2010s and onwards to the present day, just like movies in the past have been I will be overall still a controversial decision which I think immediately call hostility to Disney when they officially ended the EU continuity when there are still many ideas and stories that have yet been put on the page over in the process.
@@StarWarsCentralized That was Disney's first-ever major mistake regarding Star Wars: The Ending of the EU. As for many EU fans, it already poisoned the well for their content before any significant content was released for the new era. But truthfully I think honestly if Disney let George make his sequel trilogy there would have been still considerable uproar anyway maybe not as bad as it seems now mainly because personally yours will probably have not followed any of the comics / novels post return of the Jedi and just do his own thing maybe just take bits and pieces but mainly would do his own thing so a lot of characters and eventual party not in the mentioned or make any appearance in his version which will most likely piss people off who were big fans of the EU but that's hindsight 20/20 so I really don't know I also think a lot of backlash towards these films is also due to the time is mainly due to the cultural / political happenings going on primarily in the United States/around the world what I think would our societies deeply becoming more and more politicized over the last coming decades reaching its peak around I say the mid to early 2010s are you can definitely see this in a lot of media's coverage of many IEPs from DC and marvel, Lord of the rings, Star Trek, The Witcher and do so much more.
I like The Last Jedi far more than Force Awakens or Rise of Skywalker. My favorite movies are the original Star Wars trilogy, but I also have a soft spot for Ep1 and Ep3. I like that The Last Jedi had bold original ideas unlike the worthless Force Awakens, and it wasn't trash on the same level as Rise of Skywalker. JJ Abrams did really bad in his run with Star Wars, while Rian did okay I just wish he had better advisors that found a different direction for Luke. I think people would forgive a lot more of The Last Jedi's mistakes if they were able to accept Luke. (I was mostly able to accept Luke, and that's probably why I'm fine with the movie.)
After the Rebels won, there were no more stormtroopers in my version of the third trilogy. (...) Episode VII, VIII, and IX would take ideas from what happened after the Iraq War. @@StarWarsCentralized lol 😂 hey you’re call but that video contains George’s treatments for his sequel trilogy directly from his mouth and they’re nothing like The Last Jedi or mostly anything people at Disney or some former people who worked with George claim they are. They don’t mention any arc of trauma or failure for Luke’s character. These TLJ Luke ideas were actually just spread through collaboration before Lucas left the projects entirely when Bob Iger admitted to not using his sequel treatments. George’s own ideas don’t even mention this which means George allowed other people to add their own ideas in during the project like Luke going through some type of “drama” but when he found out his ideas were being abandoned all together he just left.

@@StarWarsCentralized I already watched your video, I know you read it. I’m saying if you want Lucas’s direct ideas just stick to the archives everything else is questionable because it either doesn’t line up with Lucas’s ideas, or isn’t mentioned by him specifically.
I disagree about Lucas including flashbacks. While they do draw for Kurosawa, none of the first six Star Wars movies have any flashbacks whatsoever, so I'm tempted to say their absence was a stylistic choice, in which case it's one Lucas would no doubt have maintained in the Sequels.
Especially since George had a perfect opportunity to use flashbacks in Return Of The Jedi, when Obi-Wan is speaking to Luke. If there was ever a chance to draw from Rashomon via flashbacks, it would've been then. But there were none. So if George didn't want to use flashbacks then, why would you want to use them now?
Hmmm, 7 would have been a little worse, but 8 and 9 would have been better. What I wanna know is what the immensely talented people who made Andor would have done with the sequel trilogy.
As great as it sounds, the reality is there would still be controversy around it. I don’t doubt that it would be better than the directionless sequels, but I doubt many will greet it with unwavering adulation.
I get your point and I see the similarities now, but still there are too many major flaws in TLJ for me. Johnson may have had the right conceptional ideas, but he messed it up in the many details. I always said the ground structure of TLJ has merrits, even Luke being a disillusioned hermit. But he went too far in too many ways and all of the bad humor. I cannot forgive him. But thanks for pointing this out.
I thank the ryan johnson's eight is lucas's episode seven. I sincerely think that when making episode 8. Rj Looked at the story treatment. George lucas had for the Sequel trilogy and use that as the basis.
Luke is Lucas. Mark Hamill figured that out in 76 on the first few days of shooting. And it says a lot about Lucas on where Luke ended up. Lucas absolutely would have killed the child of his creation…
Episode 8 is my favorite sequel movie for the merit of actually trying to convey some good message. It's a mess in the right direction. Episode 7 is just a sequel trying(and failing) to be a reboot and episode 9 is a long video trying(and failing) to be a film.
I want to like the last Jedi, I really do. I think the gripes people have with it are mostly minor, and it is a beautiful looking film. But I just can’t get behind The treatment of Luke’s character. Luke was someone who would’ve rather died than hurt his father. “I am a Jedi like my father before me” He was someone who had so much hope that he believed someone as evil as Darth Vader could be redeemed. So he would never have even thought about trying to kill his nephew in his sleep. After waiting 30 years to see more Luke, it was just massively disappointing and I think that creative decision killed the franchise.
I take issue with the two sides being political. I am a progressive who can't stand the reactive, rightwing hate mob. But I clearly see issues in the sequels, and the poor choices Abrahams and Johnson made. The cast is excellent, and the cinematography in the first two beautiful, but the moves lack character development, retread and remix the original trilogy beats badly and fail to explore the potential of the idea seeds this new trilogy had. It also fails to pass the baton from the legacy characters to the new ones and Rey deserved her own heroes journey but didn't really get one. Finn is probably the most poor used too, who had an incredible story to tell of the children soldiers who became the stormtroopers of the first order. I am going to second the poor choices with Luke too. We needed to see his fall, and regardless, none of us buy he would consider killing his nephew.

Look! She's connected to someone important!"
I could go on, but the point stands.
I still don't understand why Disney hired JJ Abrams. He was an still heavliy crtizised for his Star Trek film.
well blame Mike stocklasa/mr plinkett from redlettermedia for that in his Star Trek 2009 he stated that he wanted JJ to direct the sequels because plinkett only cares about action scenes not calm and political scenes even (though they are important elements of the prequel era of Star Wars)
and he also threw a jab on George Lucas that he should direct people into seats in the theatre
JJ would have delivered a good if fairly average and forgettable product. Where they dropped the ball was hiring ruin Johnson.

i belive no matter who made the sequels star wars fans would rant about it
I think you missed the cracks for the egg...
Exactly
Here here
I disagree on logic and consistency!
It certainly wouldn't have been a 2h30m+ space chase where they run out of gas.
Makes me want to wish to go to an alternate universe where George Lucas directed the Sequel Trilogy.
youd still be mad about it in that alternate universe lol

TLJ is the most "lucas" like out of the three by far. The cgi animals, cringe romance, critique on war profiteering, exiled luke, and big visual emphasis is all up his alley. Solo felt very similar to Lucas as well.

Great point. I can totally see that

I thought there was a reason The Last Jedi (minus the Luke about to kill his Newphew part) was one of my favourite Star Wars films.
Super interesting take, appreciate you hearing me out
Yeah but the whole section with Snoke would have been different.
It's kinda funny, but Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is surprisingly similar to these and I called that "Snyder playing with his action figures again."
And that's a fitting description for the sequels too: It's just bunch of action figures slamming into one another.
You’re so right - about Rebel Moon. The Sequels, however, are much better than that
we're talking about the franchise that started on Leia knowingly committing incest due to Lucas' poor planning btw
@@StarWarsCentralized No,they're not. You can not like Snyder's rebel moon but at least doesn't feel like he hates the characters the way Disney does.

I adore those books, Legends is my favorite part of Star Wars, and I still love the real Sequel Trilogy

100% agree people don’t wanna admit that a lot of the ideas people hate are taken directly from Lucas’s outlines
The execution is the issue, not the ideas.
They weren’t his ideas stop these lies
Just because the Sequels took a few broad plotlines and barebones character descriptions from George does not mean they at all took their stories directly from what George intended.
Probably the sequels would've been better than the real-life Disney versions. But I wouldn't count on it avoiding the same hate they got.
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate the kind words. I just earnestly love The Last Jedi but understand its oddities
Yeah he is kinda competent has director and director only.
finn was never going to be a jedi, not sure what fans like you were thinking since TFA never implied he was going to be a jedi, have you even seen the movie?
I know, right? lol!
Thank you so much! Glad to find others who love this film like I do
For however many film references the two directors would use, theirs is a fundamental, irreconcilable difference: Lucas does everything in service to telling his story, while Johnson does everything in service to expounding on the nature of story.

To see what was the last thing he'd have to say with his characters in his last Trilogy before truly leaving it to the next generation. I love seeing what artists have to say before they're passing and how they're art changes over the course of they're life.
I was bracing myself for one of those whiny "The Last Jedi sucks" videos but this was really insightful.
Thank you so much!
I think Rian Johnson should've just made the Sequel Trilogy from the start if there was no other option lol
It was too late by 2015
Ultimately, its the reason why im not terribly aggravated with the sequels we received, despite them being mostly awful: they were completely superfluous.
Great video
i fw the sequels alot but GOD they'd be so much better if Rian made all of then
I generally agree with everything you're saying here but i feel i need to add that the Canto Bight sequence could have come right out of the prequels - politically focused but also extremely goofy. Very George.
Agreed!!!
I remember Pablo Hidalgo saying that Luke Skywalker dying in Episode VII was also in George Lucas' original version of his sequels. The Last Jedi was also the only sequel that George praised, calling it "beautifully made" and I think it's because it was the most loyal to his original idea.
Hey if u can please buy and read star wars book dology it has actual quotes from Lucas and what he said somewhat contradicts this video
The Archives books? I’ve read the prequel one
I think the big issues with TLJ were that
1) it was part of the broader sequel trilogy which felt cobbled together and lacking in continuity
2) it focused too much on the newly introduced character of Rose. Given the lack of a prequel-like timeskip, the core trio should have been established in the first movie, to make the trilogy feel like one group’s story (shit even in the prequels introduced Anakin, Obi Wan, and Padmé in phantom menace even if it does focus more on Qui Gon but then he’s the OT Obi Wan analogue)
3) Too much telling too little showing
4) WAYY too much cheap comedy with the Luke scenes. Sure it mirrors the silliness of OT Yoda but Luke’s self-imposed exile isn’t not something that should have been taken that lightly “haha alien boobie milk, silly puffy animals”
I personally don't care who made what, as long as I can enjoy the thing without having to see what others might have to think about it.
Seriously?
I think you’re wrong in pretty much every aspect of this comment
Do you think some of the themes of the original sequel trilogy are revived in the new canon?
I do
@StarWarsCentralized Maul was the crimelord in Solo.
Interesting take, not sure I agree
honestly i don’t like the sequels but that’s not the point we can argue about it for hours and changing no one’s mind
the real problem with them (in my perspective) is that they were too vague for a normal star wars movie
what we have been used to is for major events to be explained in a way in the movies
for example the phantom menace when it released was something kind of unexpected but when you watch episode 2and 3 you see why it was needed
in the sequels we don’t get enough explanation for many things
(and i know many questions were answered in expanded universe but that is not accessible to everyone like me and it separates from the main line media )
for example why ray becomes near to ben power levels so quickly and many more that are in other comments
i don’t have a problem with the story that much but it lacks enough context and depth in the movie itself in my point of view and could have been much better that didn’t made many of the og fans wanting it to be removed from the canon
I love Legends too
You should definitely watch Andor
15:59 I slowed down this video to 0.25 and I'm still not able to pause at thr text to read it... Could you include more frames next time?
Super secret hidden message about how Star Wars pretty much killed cinema
I think TLJ is fine until they sidetracked Finn just to get him out of the spotlight. #justsaying
And Disney turned Star Wars gay
IKR Ventress slays so much 😌
Cope
>not a single named gay character in these movies
>"disney turned star wars gay!"
the fuck are you talking about
It's a fascinating video.
I really love the EU and I understand how fans of it are hesitant about the sequels! Thanks for your thoughtful comment
(...)
Episode VII, VIII, and IX would take ideas from what happened after the Iraq War.
(...)
Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice.
- George Lucas
“What I wish is that [Disney] had been more accepting of [George Lucas]’ guidance and advice. Because he had an outline for '7', '8' and '9'. And it is vastly different to what they have done.”-Mark Hamill 2017
George Lucas’s Version Of Luke for his sequels has nothing in common with The Last Jedi’s version of Luke.
I mean, I've kind of
lost control of Star Wars, so it's
going off in a different path than
what I intended. But the first six are
very much mine, and my
philosophy.”-George Lucas
If you want a better idea of what George actually had in mine, these coming from his mouth and not from the mouths of people he’s worked with I’d suggest watching this: ruclips.net/video/6qDQ5Ae0AkA/видео.htmlsi=lHi7nx-LKjHMhGwq
lol Star Wars Theory no thanks
@@StarWarsCentralized If you actually just want the information even without Theory involved just focus on the Star Wars Archives by Paul Duncan because those actually describe what Lucas planned to do with these films from his own words. Everything else by other people differs or contradicts what Lucas says and that’s mainly because your hearing there interpretations not George’s direct ideas.
Check the end of my video- my reading recommendation for the video is the Star Wars Archives by Paul Duncan lol I’ve read it
@@StarWarsCentralized I already watched your video, I know you read it.
I don’t think he would necessarily do the flashbacks, but he may have done a similar story
Especially since George had a perfect opportunity to use flashbacks in Return Of The Jedi, when Obi-Wan is speaking to Luke. If there was ever a chance to draw from Rashomon via flashbacks, it would've been then. But there were none. So if George didn't want to use flashbacks then, why would you want to use them now?
the last 3 star wars films where so bad I don't even consider is cannon it more like fan fiction.
I like them a lot
@@StarWarsCentralizedgood for you, a lot of people can't tolerate pure shit though
Hmmm, 7 would have been a little worse, but 8 and 9 would have been better.
What I wanna know is what the immensely talented people who made Andor would have done with the sequel trilogy.
That’s an interesting proposition, because the tone of Andor is so different from the mainline Star Wars films
As great as it sounds, the reality is there would still be controversy around it. I don’t doubt that it would be better than the directionless sequels, but I doubt many will greet it with unwavering adulation.
I consider this era George’s era as canon not the Disney era anymore thank you
Not only was Lucas friends with Coppola, Lucas was originally supposed to direct Apocalypse Now.
I get your point and I see the similarities now, but still there are too many major flaws in TLJ for me. Johnson may have had the right conceptional ideas, but he messed it up in the many details. I always said the ground structure of TLJ has merrits, even Luke being a
disillusioned hermit.
Possibly because apparently he was going to be out of his funk by the end of 7
How would Rian Johnson have seen George's story treatment if it had been rejected in 2013, aka before he came on as director of Episode Vlll?
Another banger
Am I the only one who likes Jar Jar Binks?
I love him
2-4 people agree with you at least
I tolerate him
I'm convinced it would've been even better if Rian was hired from the start and made all three movies.
I agree!
absolutely would have been
NOOO GOD PLZ NOOO
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
You're telling me the sequels could be *worse* ?
LOL
Imagine if in 99 there would have been yhe Internet we know today
😭😭😭
Great video. Love your thoughts.
Thank you so much!!!
Luke is Lucas. Mark Hamill figured that out in 76 on the first few days of shooting. And it says a lot about Lucas on where Luke ended up. Lucas absolutely would have killed the child of his creation…
Really
great video man
Appreciate it!
Biggest thing, he wouldn’t of made Luke a bitch
disheveled miserable old man luke came from the mind of lucas btw lol
@@Crusty783except it doesn’t lol

REPORT FROM THE FUTURE: In George Lucas's version of 'The Last Jedi,' the Force ghost of Yoda hosts a late-night talk show. Special guest: Darth Vader!
Should have given some credit to the novel 'Heart of Darkness' which was the inspiration for 'Apocalypse Now'.
I so hate Episode 8 that I have never watched it since opening weekend lol. But to each their own.
I should have mentioned that, yes, but the Kurtz section was already far too long!
Also you should rewatch it with an open mind
At this point, I don't care what people think about the 3 last movies. It's the spin-offs I have my own task with. I just don't like what Disney has done, and I don't hate Disney. It's just not me after 40 years of fandom.
