The fight between Rey and Palpatine really came down to two kids on the playground going “I have all yhe bad guy powers” “oh yeah? Well I have all the good guy powers” i thought that was a fever dream but ive been too afraid yo actually look
I remember rubbing my forehead and letting out the biggest breath of disappointment lol during that scene. I wanted to leave the theater, I looked over at my friends and they were doing the same exact thing lol. We talked about how shit the movie was for hours after we left the theater. If there’s one thing Disney’s good at it’s getting friends together to laugh at how awful products are and fuel a ton of inside jokes at their expense.
Don't forget the literal earrape meme by Palpatine, in a movie in the goddamn cinema. What were they thinking fr. Fever dream perfectly encapsulates the feeling.
From the moment I watched Rise of Skywalker, I’ve been thinking the same thing. The whole movie felt like an elementary playground make believe game. “Now all my star destroyers have Death Star fun’s!” “Oh yeah, half the galaxy shows up out of nowhere with zero context to fight your star destroyers”
You know what, that’s exactly what RoS felt like, and I just couldn’t place it. Maybe it’s only the fact that I had the context from experiencing the Fortnite Star Wars event which allowed me to see Rise of Skywalker as not complete shit…But the fact that you need to have played a FORTNITE EVENT(It doesn’t feel the same if you just watched it) to really get much unironic enjoyment out of that film says something about how bad it really is.
mr. rogers told america that children are more understanding and capable than we treat them yet the majority of content for kids is as simple as possible. but if you ask adults what their favourite childhood shows were, the majority are shows that had complexity, and were written for adults as well as children. thats the reason his show existed
Like AtlA for me I enjoyed it as a kid, as a teen, and still as an adult And through each stage I understood different parts of it better seeing it with more and less life experience
It’s straight up just ripping off the snap from Endgame with none of the emotional payoff. They really thought Rey saying “I am all the Jedi” after taking over their entire legacy, was going to even hold a candle to “I… am… Iron Man.” Tony’s sacrifice still gives me chills years later. Rey’s still makes me cringe.
That entire scene was frankly a huge letdown in terms of script quality. Even Sidious didn’t sound like Sidious. Then you had an extremely overdone sequence of several throwback character voices all taking turns repeating *the same exact line*.
@@epiczk0n141 Well you did just compare apples to oranges. Because Rey doesn't make a sacrifice...Tony does. What does Rey lose when she delivers that line? Nothing. She just drops a one liner with no loss.
I still remember being in the restaurant next to the movie theater with my wife, doing everything I could to keep the mystery of the film for myself. I told her that I hadn’t looked up reviews yet, but I had heard lots of good things, and how they already greenlit a sequel for the director. To demonstrate the point, I pulled up Rotten Tomatoes. And then… I saw the audience score. If only I had had the presence of mind to say “I have a bad feeling about this.”
I came out of TFA thinking, "Well, I didn't much like that, but they left a lot of dangling threads. Maybe my opiniom will change when they resolve some of those in the next one." Well, I can honestly say that my opinion changed. Not favorably, but it changed.
He kinda ended up saying he supported the feminism angle tho, especially now with the joebi wan kenobi stuff. Kinda hard for me to feel sympathy when he supports the thing that ruined it
@@galdslinger6766 i think if your main take away is "feminism ruined star wars" that says more about you as a person than anything else. Rey would be no better fleshed out a character if the only thing that was different was that she be a man
@@linziefey Considering the mountain of feminist narratives that have failed. Almost everything under Kathleen Kennedy has failed so much so disney hasn't even made their money back on Star Wars.
Why do fascists hate Star Wars? Same answer. Star Wars is about following your individual instincts, accepting the natural flow of things, self reliance, loyalty and family. These are all things that would destroy fascism. They want us calling the Stasi lines on each other, and obeying their dictates. Contrast how the Rebels and the Resistance treat soldiers who want to leave. One lets them go, one tazes them. White slavers indeed.
I don't think they do, but I also think they don't care as strongly as us fans either. They are business people. What people don't understand is a company as big as Disney is basically like a country. There are several factions that all want to do their own thing. Unfortunately, the faction that has a gigantic influence also happens to have some 5th column characteristics and is gRAPING Star Wars.
They don't so much hate Star Wars as they hate the audience that it comes tied with. Or more specifically their expectations. If they could puppet around Star Wars' skin while not putting in the effort for attention to detail, they would.
I remember back when Disney first bought Star Wars and someone on a podcast said "Well they can't do any worse than Lucas did with the prequels." and even in that moment (maybe just because I disliked Disney already) I knew that that take wouldn't age well Idk why I held out but it was Jack Pattillo during an RT Podcast that said it
the funny thing was, Lucas always planned for Episodes 1-3 to come out. The issue was always technology and money. The scripts and outlines themselves were episodes 1-2 (as one movie), 3-4 (as one), 5-6 (as the last). However each movie would have been between 6-7 hours long....with a monstrous budget for that time. Not to mention all the practical effects needed to just pull off episodes 1-3 would have broken any studio. So Lucas went with breaking up the scripts into 6 parts, and started the story at Episode 4 knowing that was the safer bet for some studios to green light. I really do think people just misunderstand Episodes 1-3 because of how contradictory they were in the EU years from the 1970's comics to the release.
I was a prequel defender since I saw pod racing for the first time. I endured years of backlash for my view but once the sequel trilogy dropped I look back and smile. You didn't appreciate what was there until it was gone. It's poetic justice.
@@Mlaww1384 empirical evidence isn't enough to convince you why a person whos job is to make money is still employed? Also the box office decreased from A New Hope to Empire to Return of the Jedi, must be a terrible series of movies going by your cope!
@@Bellylover2, it's a bit different when movies earn less when it's the creator vs a company that bought it, put someone in charge, and is seeing diminishing returns and reviews. I enjoyed most of the shows released on Netflix but the movies just don't do it for me.
There are many fans, myself included, who didn't like any of the stories where Palpatine returns. But yeah, Rise of Skywalker does it horribly bad, because as the video says: Palpatines lineage won. Which is a great metaphor for Disney - the dark side won, and they want you to think they are the light side.
@infinitepossibilities861 True. Although it always felt to me that he was "boasting" as a way to turn Anakin to the dark side. To me it was always proposed as a lie, not truth. And it does diminish everything that happens in the Return of the Jedi, which in turn makes it a bad move for the writers to hand on to.
@mirceazaharia2094 people forget that Vader's sacrifice didn't (well initially) just bring balance to the force by killing Palpatine. It also was to save his son's life so he could live on and be able to create a new jedi order. So whenever people say that Vader's sacrifice was made pointless when Palpatine was resurrected in the EU/Legends, they forget that the Jedi Order was restored and made anew by Luke. Unfortunately, we can't say the same in the Disney Canon as Luke (and by extention the Skywalker bloodline) and the New Jedi Order was destroyed with the last of the Palpatine lineage surviving. In the current Disney Canon, Palpatine won and Vader's sacrifice was all in vain.
I was just thinking about that. Don't want him to end up with Rosie? Sure, fine, whatever, as long as your replace it with something else. Oh wait, you didn't? Now he's just a lame dipshit loser who's trying to avoid the woman who loves him to instead get eternally friendzoned by the main character. Like one of the only really thematically relevent scenes of TLJ was her telling Finn about sacrificing to save people you love... and they just threw that away for literally nothing.
Remember, diversion and exclusivity are the real terms of moneymakers. And if it means being racist for money, then Disney will happily do so. It’s one thing to stand against yourself, it’s another to stand against yourself and make the exact same mistakes that those you stood against did and then act completely narcissistic and psychotic when you are wrong for repeating 20-year-old mistakes. When Micheal Bay’s Transformers movies got right what Disney’s Star Wars got wrong and twisted everything upside down to make something uniquely evil, it really shows me how this killing of tradition was so botched by Disney. I wouldn’t have had a problem with these character assassinations and risks if they had a point or underlying reason to happen. They simply didn’t. Thankfully Warhammer is still good, because without them, the magic of evil science mythology would probably be dead.
Even though I despise what Rian did. The true magnitude of KK's planned destruction of Star Wars was probably not fully apparent. The pressure was probably incredible.
You asked and I'll oblige: I saw it in theater in 1977 as a young kid. My grandmother took me, and she would for years after tell the story about about how star-struck I was, stunned by the opening blast and scroll out of silence, the Star Destroyer pass over, the entrance of Vader, the shiny gold robot with the cute beeping companion, the beautiful princess, I will never forget it. Another thing that people who weren't around then can't possibly understand was the scarcity. After it left theaters, there was no way to see any of it again. It just wasn't available, at all. It wasn't on TV. There was no video to buy or rent, no clips on demand. It was all only memory and imagination, save for an LP I had with the music and some limited dialog from the movie, and the toys. Even when Empire hit theaters in 1980, nobody had seen Episode IV again, it was not possible until after Empire closed when it was -finally- released on video. But most of us didn't even know that, and never saw it again until the Special Edition was released in 1994. That's right- my entire childhood revolved around Star Wars, agonizingly waiting for what came next, until 1994 when I finally saw the original film again. That one film created all of that for millions of kids like me, from nothing more than the memory of seeing it once or twice. Today I am 53, and seeing what Disney has done makes me literally cry. I watch videos like this one for the solidarity, hoping that someday I can no longer care.
Thanks for sharing that, mate. I can only imagine how special that moment must have been. I was fortunate enough to see the OT as a boy in cinemas in 1997, but CGI was well established by that time, so the impact (while still present) did not have the same wow factor on a “modern” audience. I’m sorry you, like so many, feel personally hurt by what Disney has done to Star Wars, but you are definitely not alone. I choose to place Lucas’ films in there own compartment in my soul, where they remain seperate from everything new and can be enjoyed in isolation (god bless physical media). I don’t think there will come a time where I no longer care for Star Wars, but I’ve reached a point where I don’t look forward to anything new (which is sad). I also avoid a lot of new content, because I know it will upset me. But Disney can’t take away what made Star Wars special, and the lessons Lucas’s characters taught me. They can do their best to tarnish them, but hope is never truly lost as long as there is at least one brainless lump like me left to fight for it. Regardless, welcome to the sheltered harbour, you are most welcome here.
@@workingjellyfish yes that's another thing you hit nail on the head in he video and reiterated here; when they announced the new trilogy a few months back, I remember thinking if you had told me when I was a kid that someday a new set of Star Wars movies was announced and I was less than giddily enthusiastic hearing that news, I'd have assumed that meant I'd already be dead. Instead, hearing the news of new movies was more saddening than anything. Anyway thanks for the great content, it really helps a lot of people feel better about it all.
My exact experience. My father took me for my seventh birthday, and when the lights went down and the theme music blared and the intro scrolled into the space above the looming Star Destroyer, it was like my senses awoke for the first time. I was hypnotized. Even at that age I appreciated that I wasn’t being talked down to like a child; George was right-children understand far more than they are given credit for. When it was over and I walked back into the heat outside, everything had changed. It had stirred in me a sense of adventure, of stories and worlds yet to be discovered, created. I had that same record you mentioned, and would listen to it religiously with my father’s oversized headphones on to get the stereo effect of the lasers shooting from my left to my right ear. I was a girl who collected the action figures obsessively and played with the boys on my block, scenes we would try and accurately remember from our single viewing. Yeah. I could write paragraphs but I think many of us had the very same experience. An experience that I’ve tried to replicate, tried to explain to others-but it’s simply impossible. I remained a fan my whole life, up to a quarter of the way into The Force Awakens. Then I knew it was truly and utterly dead. What they did after was merely dragging the corpse through the town square.
i own the original box set of VHS tapes... un edited and not the special edition edits either.... the original cuts... it is the most valuable thing i own, and i plan to pass it down to my son once i die. my dad gave it to me when he died of cancer, he and i bonded over star wars over the decades... watching disney star wars made him say this to me once "son... seeing what they did to our star wars hurts me more than this cancer and leaving your mother and you alone ever could" of course he was being sarcastic with that last half but it really broke his heart to see last jedi. thankfully he died because rise of skywalker came out. i have a son of my own and i exposed him to star wars and he and i bonded over it. i gave him all the audiobooks to listen to of the EU and various tie in books he loved them all.... he eventually learned about disney star wars and was confused as to why i never shared those with him. he eventually started watching the sequels, rebels and ahsoka/kenobi... we had a talk last week and he understands why i never exposed this to him first and he is really happen i exposed him to the good stuff. he and i still will sit down stairs and put one of the audiobooks on on the home sound system and just enjoy the good story unfold... disney star wars nearly ruined star wars for him too so he stopped watching the garbage
One correction, in Dark Empire...Han Solo kills the Emperor the final time by shooting him in the back, then a Jedi survivor of the old Jedi Order fuses with Palpatine's spirit to trap him in chaos. I love the EU but yeah, Dark Empire is one of it's lowest quality parts that does undermine RotJ pretty badly.
Lucas star wars felt like a man expressing his creative vision, no matter how flawed he may be. But through 6 films he tells a story about how a hero can fall to darkness, then come back from it in a last ditch effort to save his son, at the cost of his own life. It's a story of tragedy, triumph, but also the hero inspiring hope in one of the most evil men in the world and helping him see a better way when it was easier, more tempting to kill him. Disney Star Wars feels like a corporation taking that same story, throwing it in the garbage, then making up a new story about their Mary Sue OC who gets whatever she wants and doesn't have to suffer nearly as much as Luke or Anakin did, and even gets to be stronger than both of them because girl power. Don't like it? Well, you must be sexist and hate strong female characters. I swear, if Disney had it their way, they would make us forget anything pre-Disney ever existed including the OT.
The funny thing is, even their “new story” isn’t actually new, but just a rehash of the OT. They were either too lazy or too afraid to try something new, so we ended up with a trilogy that’s completely unoriginal and pointless.
with all respect to Lucas, but the prequels are just a fascinating character study about a man's hubris and distance from reality, thinking that anything we would write on that yellow paper noteblock with his pen would turn into nothing but artistic gold
@@Lektuerekurs The prequels are not bad. They're not the same as the OT, but that's okay. None of the Lucas Star Wars movies follow the same structure as the last one but they all connect and have a unified vision. The Disney movies actively seek to invalidate previous movies while recreating their structure with less likable characters and weaker plots. I don't know if this is done out of ignorance or some misunderstood sense of subversion, but it makes them unwatchable as a fan of previous Star Wars movies.
Technically, the Brothers Grimm stories were “made for children” but included witches trying to cook and eat children, evil stepmothers who abused their children, death, dismemberment, etc.
Oh please don't compare our German fairy tales with Disney Star Wars. The fairy tales actually have a message and are classics that have endured time. Disney Star Wars on the other hand....@@workingjellyfish
European children and USA children are built different. As an Italian when I was 3 grandpa used to read Pinocchio to me, and I am talking about the priginal version, the Disney/US one has like 10% of the original stuff and is also boringly puritan. And original Pinocchio is nothing compared to Ulisses story, which was told to me when I was 7, without any sort of censorship, like when Ulisses and his crew drill out the eye of Polifemus with a blazing battering ram.
Also in the EU Palpatine legit died, which had lasting consequences moving forward. At no point was it ever implied that he had somehow survived and pulled the strings behind the scenes. And as is stated in this video, he is ultimately defeated by the Skywalkers once again.
Oh, I'm quite afraid Disney does give a subtle nod to the fans every once and awhile. They do it in the form of calling you names and killing your beloved characters.
Also begging you to buy merchandise. And not so subtly implying there’s something wrong with you if you didn’t buy the merchandise. Like only a misogynist wouldn’t buy the Rey merchandise.
@higgsbonbon The worst part of it is the children that are suffering because of this. If I was a child in China working 18 hour days making that crap from which I didn't even know what the product was and knowing it would be shipped 7,000 miles to a land where it just gets dumped in a landfill I would be pissed!
Beloved characters lol You know, I.P laws don't extend to your imagination - just make up your own star wars [assuming that it's too late for you to climb out of your cultural sewer]
'In the EU, Skywalker win. In Disney Star Wars, the Skywalkers are dead and the Palpatines win.' Succinct and on the money. I really couldn't put it better.
I still remember my shock after watching TLJ. I could not believe it. It was a cold sensation. Like, Star Wars was mocking me, and punishing me for ever loving Luke. For having him as a hero since my childhood. After that movie, I never again watched any Disney Star Wars.
Same feelings, but i actually learned my lesson only when they did it again with Obi Wan, that was the last straw for me.The mandalorian 2 first seasons rekindled a gilmmer of hope in me for Star Wars, so i was actually excited about the Obi Wan Kenobi show. When they deconstructed Obi Wan again, just like Luke, I was so angry, it was the last straw, i stoppped watching or being excited for any following Star Wars projects.
I think what's killing all of this for me more then anything is how interconnected all the media is becoming. I stopped watching marvel movies because they kept bringing in character X from show Y that i've never seen and I feel like I had no idea what was happening. As someone that never watched rebels, I have no interest in Ahsoka because I don't really know a lot about the main cast. They keep layering media on top of media and at a point I just don't want to be a part of it anymore because I don't want to invest all my time in various shows just to get caught up on the current media
Ahsoka is from the Clone Wars animated movie... They are marketing her to attract the fans who loved the Clone Wars animated shows. There are people who love said shows.
But if you don't buy all the tickets and subscriptions and watch every mediocre show and piss poor, blatantly formulaic color by numbers movie that they keep pumping out, how are you going to keep being a sucker for the...I mean...keep up with what people are watching? Where's your FOMO? Sarcasm aside, though? Yeah, it's all dogshit. Modern Star Wars. Modern Marvel. I know it's still popular, but I'm a 90's kid. Venom, for example, is supposed to be an unhinged, brutal killing machine with a little bit of a conscience. He later becomes the Lethal Protector, ripping muggers to bloody strips and feasting on the remains. What did we get? Black flubber being a fucking jester. Shameful. Honestly, I'm basically back to how I was when I was like 5: if it ain't a really good or a really dumb horror movie, I don't care anymore. Bonus points if it's a splatter fest. Call it what you like.
@@xenogorwraithblade2538 I'm willing to accept both Venom the brutal, unhinged killing machine with a little bit of conscience, and also black flubber. I like both. I've been thinking long and hard about the same thing, because it really is quite amazing. Honestly, I think one of the biggest issues is the fact that Disney is so big that they can't adjust to the market anymore. There's so many layers that they don't get information to the people who need it.
I've come to the conclusion it's a case of leadership having priorities that aren't good business. They have done what they wanted, though it has not ended how they wished.

The worst thing about Disney decanonizing the EU them essentially not allowing anymore new stories (now branded Legends) to be created in that universe; only The Old Republic MMO is the only thing still being put out that's apart of the old continuity. If Disney and Lucasfilm had allowed the EU to still continue along side their Disney Canon, It would not have been been that upsetting. But instead they forced this reboot upon us and told us to get in line. Not only has their Disney Canon age terribly (the sequel trilogy, the bad content being produce and recently throwing their own books, comics, games under the rug in exchange for the movies/shows), the fact they're trying to plagiarize and bastardize aspects of the EU is what pisses me off the most, I have a big reason to hate Disney Star Wars for everything they done since 2014,
All this and being called “gatekeeper”, “hater” or whatever other cheaparse insult they can muster rather than make better content to shut us up. They want the cache of the EU creators’ work as a crutch, because they have no faith in the ability of current employees. Call beskar something else, we’re not having this conversation. Have a none blue grand admiral, would anyone notice the change? They’re all using these as memberberries for EU readers, to try and drag them in. What about clone wars season 7 or the bad batch or Mando season 1 no one cares about the other 2 seasons and what about and or the ones I listed are the few Disney either did well or started well oh yeah and tales of the Jedi and rebels
Correct, it's terrible fan fiction. You should look into the EU books if you haven't already. The Thrawn trilogy is brilliant. I really don't care if some corporation says it's canon or not.
I am now realizing that the brillience of the original EU (what is now known as Legends), is that the writing and storytelling exceeded it's source material in many ways. The science went from an unexplained medium soft science to a medium hard science, and the characters were flushed out. There were cosequences to people's actions, and they grew as characters. Sure, some of it went a little off the wall (the Ssi-ruu, the Vuuzhan Vong, the reborn emporer), but even these things had an overall story arc that was understood and respected by the various writers. This is something Disney couldn't even accomplish in a multi-million dollar movie trilogy.
all you have to look at is KOTOR 2 for what Star Wars storytelling can be. Chris Avelone, the primary writer for the game wasn't even a fan of Star Wars before working on the game, but he still watched all of the movies, and dove deep into the EU with the books and comics in order to get the best understanding of the SW universe and how it operates to write the best story he could. that's dedication and if the development cycle for the game wasn't so rushed, I truly believe it could have been even better than it already is.
So I hate to be 'that guy' but in a perverse way, I've been enjoying a parade of "I told you so"! Despite being born in '00, I grew up with star wars. My parents had the remastered original trilogy on VHS, and I was watching it before I even developed self-awareness. I went to the prequels in theaters, owned all the clone wars dvds and the animated series, I played the lego star wars games, built the models (they're still hanging from my ceiling all these years later), had the action figures, dressed in costume, and most importantly, collected and read the EU like a man possessed. I have two whole bookshelves dedicated to star wars books, novels, comics, lore books, art books, everything. I would take them to school to read, I even took them to college. I also own almost all of Mr. Zahn's work (non-star wars included), and they are without a doubt my favorite books of all time. In short, I *was* a star wars super fan. When I was told in my math class in 6th grade that star wars was bought by Disney, I told my friend "they had better not make Chewbacca sing a musical". More and more I expressed that I had my doubts about it all. When the 7th movie released, I boycotted it, though I did end up watching it at a May the 4th day at the library, where my first thought was 'this is just the 4th movie but worse'. As the years passed, my discontent grew as did my list of complaints, yet even my star wars minded friends blew it off as reactionary, and that I was too up myself because of all the legacy content I grew up with. Eventually I stopped caring, because it hurt too much to feel like I was alone in watching my life long obsession get destroyed. Then, people all of a sudden started seeing the cracks, the flaws in Disney's franchise and began to make a stink. Those old star wars friends (who I'm still friends with to this day) now coming to me to bitch and moan about how Disney is ruining everything and running it into the ground, all I can do is listen idly as my own criticism is echoed back to me almost a decade later. I think, and this is entirely my opinion, star wars is dead; it was shot in 2012 and Disney has been parading the corpse to trick us into thinking it was still alive. Myself and a few others saw through the ruse and grieved our loss back then, and it's only recently, as the body falls to pieces, leaving Disney saturated in filth, that most everyone else has come to accept the truth and they begin their collective grieving.
Glad to see others who had an experience very similar to mine speak like this, thank ye. While I wasn't on the Star Wars train since toddler age, I was introduced to it early by an older cousin and grew up with it, prequel releases and major SW vidya games basically punctuated my teenage years. I loved the OT and PT despite their flaws, I loved the principle of storytelling about it all, and while I ridiculed some aspects of SW EU I still spent hours and hours reading EU material (not to mention playing games, which are mostly EU too) and enjoying loading up on lore even when I laughed at some products while loving others. Disney's takeover changed a lot, the obliteration of Lucasarts being a crippling blow by itself given my love of SW video games. I felt like it was a metaphorical smell of smoke in the room that everyone chose to ignore when I said I had a bad feeling about Disney's stewardship. When Force Awakens released, it clearly didn't impress my Star Wars fan friends but they chose to load up on hopium and "it's bound to get better" and laughed at my distaste for it; when mediocre shows and worse movies released later, they came to see my point but it was too late by then, for them and everyone - there was little more to enjoy in Star Wars as told by Disney for us. At least I'm glad they eventually came around from "I dunno man, you're overreacting, it's better than you think it is" to "oh well, you were right and it sucks, let's forget about it", and to this day we enjoy old SW EU games and side materials but haven't really talked about ""official"" Star Wars Disney material almost at all over the past two years or so. Still, it feels almost wrong, to see a franchise I sincerely thought impossible to truly screw up and sink, be felled so completely and causing nothing but apathy for its current state - not even hatred or dislike, but abandonment.
What you described is eerily similar to my experience with the Halo franchise. Pretty much exactly point for point. People calling me a reactionary when I felt like 343 industries was fucking it up back in 2012. And now everyone echoing my own critique 10 years later. Having so much opportunity to make something great and instead making something shockingly terrible. Almost like they're doing it on purpose. Decades from now Disney Star Wars and 343's Halo will both go down as perfect examples of how to kill classic, beloved franchises. One for Movies and the other for Video Games.
When Disney decanonized the EU I knew stuff was going to be bad, but I still deluded myself that at least the movies would be decent, after watching Episode 7, I no longer had any such delusions. I haven't given disney a cent since then. But I still love the EU, I couldn't care less about the disney universe, I simply ignore it.
What I remember about the rise of Disney Star Wars is how excited I was. During the waning hours of the acquisition, Legends was discreetly de-canonized. It was a loud trip, we were all looking forward to a new golden age of the franchise without the incompetence of its legendary creator. Did we have any doubts? Any private fears? Perhaps, but none said a word. Not when Clone Wars 2008 was cancelled, not when Rebels Season 1 was released. And not even when we rushed to watch The Force Awakens. Not a word. 😢
Keep in mind that Disney was in a bit of a different place back then. The MCU was a juggernaut and Frozen had just been a smash hit the company hadn't seen since the Lion King. And the ugly side like the Remakes was not so prominent yet.
What seriously bugs me is you totally could've done a retelling of the Thrawn saga WITH THE NEW CHARACTERS very easy: Rey could've been a student under Luke in the New Republic, Ben is still a child of the solos and joins her and Finn an ex-Imperial conscript on a mission to stop Thrawn. There's still ample opportunities for old characters to return as supporting cast and not feel like total nostalgia bait. Of course, you'd only get an idea like this is you actually read anything in the EU.
Yeah Kennedy didn’t want Rey to owe Luke anything. That’s the real reason he doesn’t appear until the end of TFA, JJ’s initial plan was he would appear earlier and start training her but there were concerns from KK that he’d become the focus of the movie instead of Rey. KK really hates Luke.
@@cathygrandstaff1957 You could honestly just say "KK hates men" and be correct. There's a reason why the new director for the Rey Series is a radical feminist who "wants the series to make men uncomfortable" and both the male leads of the OG Trilogy were used for fanbaiting before being killed off to make way for Mary Sue the character.
@@Aleph3575 No, that’s a misquote. She said she was happy her previous documentaries, which were about honor killings of women and other legitimate problems faced by women in Pakistan, made men uncomfortable. She never said she was aiming to make men uncomfortable in the Star Wars movies she’s been hired for. She might, she might not.
While I agree that they could have (and in hindsight should have) done this, I don't mind that they went the route of doing something new... They just needed to DO SOMETHING NEW. They just rehashed/soft rebooted the originals without the cleverness of the Star Trek reboot. There are endless stories they could have told and the WORST thing they could have done is what they did. There are still enjoyable aspects of the movies, and my kids love them so there is that, and in the end that's what really matters. But I really wish would could have gotten something better.
I grew up watching the Prequels and The Clone Wars and I loved every second of them. Rebels however, I absolutely hated, it felt too dumbed down and cheap. I absolutely love star wars. I miss when star wars was actually good. What disney did to star wars is unforgivable.
I hate how rebels is more childish them clone wars when the world of rebels is in a time where depravity oppression slavery and torture were encouraged
@@panther-nk2hn That's why i think killing the grand inquisitor was a bad decision because he brought moments like showing the dead jedi and mocking kanan that really made me feel for the heroes
@@tornadragon4047 the show did pretty well when it expanded the universe and went places that hadn't been explored (at least in Disney's new canon). I loved all the Mandalorian arcs (though maybe that's just me being a massive fan of the Mandalorian culture).
@panther-nk2hn It's the inconsistencies that hurts it. It has great peaks like the bendu and kanan getting blinded but really low lows where it's like Congrats you watched them gather fruit for 20 minutes
I saw rise of the Skywalker with my 10 yr old cousin's family and a friend of theirs from outside the US that had never seen a star wars before. Afterwards all she said, with utter confusion, was, "are they all like this?"
What bummed me out most, probably, is that they decided to keep the dumbest stuff from the old canon in particular, like: "It's the empire again!" "Somehow, Palpatine came back!" "They built another planetkiller." Palpatine, empire and planetkiller get blown up by a single snub fighter or a 3 man party on foot with with main character level plot armor... again. "And they cloned Palpatine again. And there it comes again, the empire. With 3 new planetkillers in tow" They are all blown up by a snub fighter or a 3 man party on foot with main character level plot armor... again...
I'd argue The Force Awakens is the worst of the sequels for exactly this reason. All three movies suck, but at least the other two did some things differently. TFA was just a worse version of ANH, and why would I waste my time watching an inferior copycat when I can watch the original?
I was born in '93, so i wasn't around for the first years of Star Wars. However, IT was around for MY first years. Star Wars was my first introduction to both Science Fiction and Fantasy at age 4 or 5. Before I read Lord of the Rings, or watched Star Trek, or had discovered the myriad of other things it would become the gateway drug for, i would watch the original trilogy over and over at my grandmother's house, and then at home. I read every single Star Wars book I could get my hands on at the public library or that i could beg my mother to buy. Same with video games, though those were much harder for me to get at. I saw the prequel trilogy in the theaters when my family saw almost no other movies in theaters for lack of funds... I was raised on, if not BY Star Wars, and it will always hold a very special place in my heart. Then came Disney... At first i was excited, hopeful. Heck, I went to see The Force Awakens twice, and enjoyed Rogue One... But the cracks that I should have seen with the discarding of the EU that had brought me so much joy, (and yes, I have some parts I didn't like, everyone does.) led to just the shattering of everything with The Last Jedi. I left that theater lost... confused... And then angry. For so long I tried to hold out hope that it was all a mistake, a joke, that somehow it would be fixed... But they just keep beating Star Wars into the dust, desecrating every single thing they touch. I don't have any hope for Star Wars anymore... When I watch videos like this, it's almost just to assure myself that I'm not crazy, and I'm not the only one who sees it. I have no interest in anything else Disney puts out for their hollow mockery of what I loved... And I can only desperately try to beat back the apathy enough to still enjoy the old movies and pre-disney EU, which I will never call "Legends". Alas, I cannot pretend that my enjoyment for the old Star Wars has not been tainted by the hurt I feel for what was done to it afterwards. If only I could go back to that simpler time when I was a small child running around with my Melinnium Falcon and my cheap plastic lightsaber, but time continues to move forwards. I hope one day I can really manage to separate myself from the effects of these things and just enjoy my childhood for what it was. Until then, I'll just keep hold of my memories and wait. I enjoyed the video. Thank you and you've earned a subscriber.
Welcome to the sheltered harbour, my friend. Your tale is very similar to my own, right down to leaving the cinema after watching The Last Jedi and feeling confused, hurt and in time … mad. I recall vividly a phone call with my father asking me what I thought of The Last Jedi. Up until this point I had always given Star Wars 5/5 stars, it was a running joke with my dad that no other films could ever get 5 stars, because nothing compared to Star Wars. But I said: “I’m not sure”. Perhaps I had misunderstood the film, perhaps I was too dumb to understand it, perhaps I was the problem? Because there was no way I could say what I was feeling. My father thought I was taking the piss, “nah, what did you actually think?” … “I’m not sure, I think … I think I hated it.” It nearly brings me to tears to this day thinking about that moment, how could I? A man who loved Star Wars, who had been raised on, if not BY, Star Wars feel this way? My entire childhood, my moral compass (including how I define love and hate), my very center felt wrong, felt used, even abused. I too turned to RUclips, desperate not to be wrong about something that had been so important to me, something that I thought I understood, pleading and attempting to reassure myself that I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t. “No … there is another”. As it turns out there were more than a few who felt the same way and could give voice to the frustrations I had. Unbeknownst to me, this was the start of the adventure that would lead to the creation of my channel. As I watched the other franchises, I had loved debauched, subverted and abused for a quick dollar, I began to pick apart why I was reacting so negatively. I watched, I read and I learned. Not only about the art of entertainment, but also about myself and came to realize that out of my suffering, I could hopefully help others to laugh, to learn and to belong. You are not alone, mate. And I’m sorry that Disney has made you feel this way about something that was/is so important to you. But they cannot touch what made you who you are, and your Star Wars experience (for better or worse) is yours and yours alone. Hope is a good thing, even in the darkest of times, even if that hope is as simple as enjoying the first six Star Wars films without associating them with Disney. Regardless, thanks for sharing and thanks for your support, you are very welcome here.
I was born in 96 and my story with star wars matches yours almost entirely. I've come to peace with star wars essentially being a dead franchise but at least I have the six movies and all of the old expanded universe
Born in 91. Bought all the extended universe books and was so deep into the lore, had a massive action figure collection. I LIVED for Star Wars as a kid. It breaks my heart to see it ruined by capitalism.
The Truce at Bakura or The Courtship of Princess Leia would've made phenomenal starting places for a modern Star wars film series. I was literally floored when solo got killed. I was like WTF? Here they have virtually unlimited material for future movies and they just DO THAT to us? There are millions of loyal star wars fans and Disney just shit on all of them. These are the the people who would've made their films smash hits. Seriously? Also, you can't discount the traditionally animated, two part Clone Wars film that the CGI series was based on. Nowhere else will you get to see how badass general grievous really was. Nothing else shows how effortless Mace Windu was in combat. It gave a lot of context to the story.
I've read some pretty good SW fan fics. There are some pretty cool fan animations, too. As technology and techniques improve, it's only a matter of time until the fans can make their own reboot.
@@Very-old-man Andor and Rogue One are pretty good, but I think the TCW 2008 series, the Bad Batch, and also Rebels are also not bad either. But yeah there's way too many ruined opportunities.
@@merafirewing6591 Yeah I agree mate, those shows certainly have great moments. It’s true Disney is capable of putting out good Star Wars content, they just have to get the right writers and directors to do it. I really hate people just saying Disney sucks because it is hit and miss like most things are these days.
What irked me the most is that the first sequel had some decent ideas and plot points they were trying to setup, then just dumped them all and restarted again, then did it a third time. They wrote and produced 3 separate movies and tied a loose story between them all
As I was enjoying your well thought out video essay, agreeing with several points being made a hilarious coincidence occured. At 1:04:05 when you were bringing up the Star Wars Holiday Special, a video game ad started to play which started with "Rated 'T' for Teens." It had me dying with laughter at the irony of the point you were trying to establish at that time.
The fact that this even needs to be talked about and that my once beloved franchise is now governed by the whims of corporate drama is why I hate Disney's Star Wars and why I don't care about anything they're putting out anymore. Star Wars is as good as dead to me as long as it's in the hands of these people.
“Apathy is death.“ At this point, upwards of 90% of new Disney Star Wars content for me is like seeing an old girl girlfriend post updates on her social media with her new boyfriend. Part of you could maybe bring yourself to be happy for her and him, maybe, but you’re just too emotionally taxed to really spend the energy to care anymore, especially since she’s a different person now. You may not hate her guts, but you wouldn’t invite her over for dinner anymore either. Instead, you’re watching people talk about what things could’ve been like. (what if and fan fictions). That actually makes my analogy sound even the talk.
Andor is honestly one of the only things about Disney Star Wars that's made me feel something meaningful. It's my favorite Star Wars TV show other than TCW.
Teasing us with the reactivation of R2D2 at the end of episode 7, I thought , "Great! We're going to see Luke again! Hopefully we can forget all about this stupid movie and get on with real Star Wars again." Then we got episode 8. They took everything that Luke ever stood for and trampled it under their feet. What came after that was an apothy that I still feel.
Luke must eventually have learned the truth…that his mother was responsible for putting Emperor Palpatine on the throne, that the Empire was, indeed, just the same old Republic with a change in management philosophy, that which side was good and which was bad was a matter of perspective after all.
@@surferdude4487 Queen Amidala moved the vote of non-confidence in Chancellor Valorum’s leadership, setting up her own politician Sheev Palpatine to be the next Chancellor. Her representative Binks moved to give him emergency powers. The Senate voted in everything Naboo asked for.
My man, great vid, especially the opening segment. Your tribute to the EU was touching, respectful and knowledgeable, and even when you used Anakin to poke fun at some of our obsessions (5:14) (R.I.P. Mara Jade, we love and miss you) I knew it was all in good fun, one fan to another. And you hit the nail on the head, even the weakest EU entrances never showed any disrespect towards the original characters. Heck, I'd say that in the books Luke suffers so much in the Legacy of the Force series, he has far more right to turn into Jake Milkdrinker in those stories than he did in the films, but he still didn't give up. He was hurt but not broken, and I don't know why Disney and RJ don't realize how inspiring that can be. Keep up the good work, and I hope your channel grows by leaps and bounds.
Thanks for your kind words mate. I believe the best way to unpack issues like Disney Star Wars is through the eyes of a fellow fan with a sprinkle of humour and some patented salty criticism. That way we can have an open conversation, regardless of point of view, and a bit of fun at the same time.
If DSW has taught me anything it is that George Lucas has guts. I love 4-6, and kinda hate 1-3, but even with 1-3 he was going big and taking risks. DSW is risk averse and it helps make nearly everything they do meh at best. And in case anyone wonders, 8 is Rian Johnson doing an impression of someone who has guts which is not the same thing as actually having them.
Gotta disagree. Episode 8 is much like most of his other projects: To troll audiences and throw shade at the stupid morons who think his stuff is great. He's basically the thief from _The Emperor’s New Clothes._
@@Lobsterwithinternet I mean, considering he's come out and said that he considers a successful film to be something that's as liked as it is hated (which is quite literally the opposite of success, it's just another form of failure), you're not wrong.
Maybe Rian Johnson has guts but not instinct. It takes more than guts to write a good story you also need the instinct to write that type of story. My reading of The Last Jedi is that Rian hates Star Wars. For him it’s just a stupid popcorn flick that appeals to the brainless masses so he doesn’t have to work to make the film good, absolutely anything he shits out will be well received as long as he coats it in a nice layer of CG explosions. Which he does. He gives us lots of nice boom booms and pew pews over a story that doesn’t make any particular sense if you actually think about it but serves to get our characters from set piece to set piece and culminates with a ship on ship collision that could have been pulled straight out of Gundam and a battle on a crystal planet that’s beautiful to look at but again makes zero sense as a base. He expected this to earn him accolades because after all the Star Wars fanbase is just a bunch of man children who never moved past liking a dumb kid’s movie and was frankly shocked when we told him his work sucked and wasn’t up to the standards we’re used to. That and yes he’s a troll.
Because everything was ripped from A New Hope. Everything was stolen from something better. But even then it's still a pretty indefensible film. Perhaps the only new idea from that movie was Finn. Not his execution, but the concept of his character. A stormtrooper turned Rebel leader. Cool idea. Terrible execution. Everything else in that movie was bad or stolen from A New Hope.
@@Remember_Bubblebutt Thank you! I've been trying to figure out how to say that for a while now. It's like you pulled my thoughts out of my head and typed them for me to read!
My reaction was similar to Mauler's review when started the movie. I was already skeptical before my family dragged me to see it, but when that first sentence of the title crawl cleared the bottom of the screen, my mind went *record scratch*, ok timeout, hold on, stop wait, dammit. It was downhill from there.
The story was a bit contrived, and when you left the cinema, you felt a little empty. But. It was the first movie. You thought they had runway to save the ship. I remember leaving the cinema. I could barely remember what had happened in the movie. Star destroyer gets blown up, oh yeah, also the new republic is just non existent, and we won’t explain how a galaxy spanning civilization virtually disappears. And… one of the poster leads is practically murdered(fake out) at the end of the first movie. It tasted the same. But it brought some cool things. It brought an interesting if not cryptic villain(s). It brought back entire original cast as well… hmmm Honestly, the most memorable part of the movie is the death of Han. And mostly because of how big of a shock it was
I won’t defend the other sequels but Force Awakens is a good film definitely better than both Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. The new characters are more interesting, have more depth and are performed better than the likes of Jar Jar, Anakin, Padme etc. These characters only really become good in expanded media or in RotS. The plots pretty fun and sets up the First Order as a tangible threat establishing what SHOULD have been the trilogy’s conflict. It’s a good starter film to a trilogy it’s the follow ups that mess things up.
Fun fact: Ashoka was designed to be unlikeable and annoying so that Filoni and Lucas could deliberately improve her character over time and give her a proper arc.
I’m really glad to finally hear someone deep dive into the effects of cutting the EU. I see a lot of people nod towards it, but 90% of the focus is on the directing/writing/casting. Total honesty, I never really enjoyed the OG movies all that much as a kid. My appreciation of them developed later….AFTER I learned about the books. I couldn’t get behind the characters. But after reading the books, I felt like I had a better grasp of the characters, their personalities, etc. I still don’t really care for most of the movies, with a couple exceptions. To me, the books were always, and will always be Star Wars to me. So when they cut everything that I recognized as Star Wars it was always going to be a Herculean uphill battle to regain my interest. Now that I’ve seen what Star Wars is, and will effectively always be, there really is just no reason for me to care.
Similar with me. I love Star Wars, but if it was just the movies, the love would probably have faded a long time ago. The books were what it really wast at. I was hurt when they decided to drop the EU, but EU wasn't what it used to be at that point when Filoni's TCW had bulldozed the continuity and demoralised some of the authors. So I decided to give it a chance. Rebels was... OK. Didn't love it but didn't hate it either. Then TFA, I was giving it a fair chance so hard that it took me a while to admit that it wasn't good. Salvageable, but not good. Rogue One had a cool battle, but otherwise it was a boring movie. Then the Last Jedi, the chance to turn it around, but it decided to ruin it all instead. It was beyond recovery at that point. I could have been able to make peace with the matter if they replaced the EU with something decent, but they didn't. I think Solo is the best Disney SW movie so far and that isn't a high praise. Some parts of the Mandalorian season 1 and 2 were pretty good, but it could have had better writing. The less said about the other series, the better. The only Disney EU books I've read are Zahn's 2017 Thrawn trilogy. OK, but felt constrained for having to maneuver around Filoniverse.
I grew up the same I actually find the Star Wars films boring im a much more science fiction person than science fantasy. But star wars Video games and anything to do with the clone wars up to 2005 is the stuff I LOVE I find that so much more intersting than autistic incel space samurai
That ending bit about Ashoka being the last hope we have... yikes, that was really sad to hear, knowing the show we ended up getting. I don’t have any more hope for Star Wars, the odd occasional good movie or show isn’t enough to keep me invested when Disney is simultaneously shoveling out... you know. My hope instead lies in a new original property driven by talented creative people that can overtake the corpse parade Disney’s been running
I always said Disney buying Star wars was the worst thing that could have happened to the franchise. It guarantees that the movies will keep getting made until they're unprofitable and no one cares anymore. Rather than going out on a high note or disappearing with its creators death. It just keeps going until it isn't even recognizable. I just never thought they'd get there at the end of their first trilogy. But i tuned out as soon as I saw mickey holding that lightsaber. And I'm glad I did. Since then the only SW media I've consumed is Rogue One and it was involuntary. I've seen the franchise implode and I'm glad it happened sooner rather than later.
@@JosephOliver-kh9init’s one thing to shut down Lucasarts. It’s another when they give the exclusivity rights on Star Wars games to EA of all companies.
I will never forget when Kathleen Kennedy said star wars didn't have any source material beyond the movies. She specifically said star wars didn't have novels.
That is still icomprehensible to me. Was she rellay that clueless , after being put in charge of Star Wars, not knowing abotu expanded universe, when a simple search or wiki read would ahve enlightened her? Or was it all already a part of her plan to "burn the past" to make place for her own bullsh*t ?It sounds still so weird for me.
@@daniodanny4485 Thats not accurate on severel levels. First what shocks us is her statement that there is no source material beyond movies. So she goes into this gig, takes over , and says there are no hundreds of comics , books, nothing. This is just lying or astonishing level of ignorance and incompetence. Geroge Lucas was well aware of the expanded universe , even if he viewed it outside of his canon. There are some quotes by him tough, that for example he used the Star Wars Encyclopedia to check if some names were taken, to try to maintain some consistency. So he somehow acknowlegded it, even if his stories were canon. Also there is a different view of the author of it all , and someone that just takes over... So what you wrote isnt really true.
Her direct quote "There's no source material," Kennedy said. "We don't have comic books. We don't have 800-page novels. We don't have anything other than passionate storytellers who get together and talk about what the next iteration might be." Tahts udenfenadable imho.
31:03 The way he facepalms as people applaud for what essentially amounts to: "fuck what the fans want that have been waiting decades, because now it's about ME and what I want because I'm in charge." How can someone be that selfish and self centered? If you fundamentally disagree with what the fans want (who are also customers because you are selling them a product if you've forgotten), then why take the job? If it was just the money then you could have cleaned up the EU. If you want a different kind of Star Wars story it's a huge universe that spans an ungodly amount of time.... look at how Rogue One was very unique but also fit into and complemented what existed. It respected it; not attempting to undermine and destroy what came before.
When I offered general concerns or critiques of the sequels, I was yelled at by Disney Star Wars fans and creators alike. I was told many times "it's not for you" and "if you don't like it then don't watch it" and to the extreme "you're just an evil white male who hates seeing a woman and a black man in the spotlight".
This is what they do to every fandom they infiltrate, take over and eventually make it all about them and their personal ideologies and tell the people who built the fandom to get lost. Their like locusts, destroy prosperity in one field, move on to the next.
"A black man in the spotlight" The irony The problem probably comes from narcecists being involved, remember when Ryan got pissed at critism and then claimed he didn't?
I had a similar experience. Had someone tell me that the Force Awakens was the “perfect Star Wars movie” and that I was not a “true Star Wars fan” for not thinking so. I guess I’m not… since I have skipped several of the movies and series based on poor reviews at this point.
Oh yeah. Yeah... Its incredible how toxic the Disney sycophants get. Welp. I for one was always more of a fan of the prequel EU, and never muched liked Filoni. So I can keep going with that and all the great fan projects being made about it like the mods. I wonder if they can keep going without my money? heh. Welp. I'm no betting man, but looking at that drop in share price, I don't thinm they can.
I grew up watching the Prequels with my cousin. He had the full saga on VCR when we were kids, and every time I stayed at his place, we made it a habit of watching at least one of the films (usually RotS), sometimes trying to marathon the whole thing. When TFA came out, we went and saw it in cinemas. I was a bit disappointed, but I fooled myself into thinking "maybe, just maybe, they're playing it safe. Maybe they're only recreating ANH to gauge the audience's reaction." When TLJ came out, we went again, and this time, I'd lost a lot of hope just off of the trailers alone. I still remember how that night ended. We walked out of the cinema, he asked me what I thought, and my exact words were, and I quote, "Star Wars is dead." I had hopes for TFA, I actually enjoyed Rogue 1, TLJ ensured I abandoned anything Star Wars that came out post-Disney, with the exception Zahn's new Thrawn novels and their prequels, the Ascendency Trilogy, and even then, they only got a pass because of the original Thrawn Trilogy, otherwise I'd throw them in the trash with the rest of Disney's contributions. That was a few years ago. I hated what Disney did to Star Wars. Nowadays, I've moved beyond hate. There was this game when I was a kid. It was nothing big, basically an indie title. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords. There was this one character, who was definitely not a strong female character, as we all know Rey was the first of those in Star Wars, by the name of Kreia, and for the one or two people who did play this completely unknown game, she had one line that perfectly sums up where I sit now on Star Wars. "Apathy is death." I'm apathetic to Star Wars in it's current incarnation, and that apathy is what truly killed it. Not the hate at seeing a huge part of my childhood being torn apart by Hollywood execs who couldn't give two shits about anything but the potential money, but the complete indifference that followed. It used to be I'd be excited for any Star Wars news. Now, the only Star Wars news that excites me is a single fanmade RUclips series that focuses on two stormtroopers during the events of Eps 4-6 and mods for games that came out between one and two decades ago. Nothing new, nothing that is officially Star Wars, just fanmade content based on the Star Wars I grew up with, before Disney destroyed what faith I had in the series and the SW universe as a whole.
I know a lot of Star Wars fans love Filoni, but I think a LOT of the problems actually stem from his core philosophy of treating *every* idea of Lucas as sacrosanct and essential to the point of strip mining every piece of even discarded lore or concept art. It’s fandom serving fandom and not a creative making art. Everything is just serving the surface level spectacle with the depth and skill of a teenager’s fanfic.
Yeah that's pretty much the best we can expect without George at the helm, same as IPs like the Cthulhu mythos, Tolkien's Legendaerium or Sherlock Holmes stories, once the original creator is gone, everything else is fanfic. For me I choose to enjoy it for what it is on a fanfic/what if type level, for others it ruins their entire lives and turns them into demented maniacs who react with apoplectic rage every time some related media is released.
Granted the Clone Wars actually was Really good. George lucas directly oversaw production on the clone wars which is more than likely why the series turned out to be a masterpiece, unlike rebels.
There is an entire universe of possibility to SW. Instead of exploring or even creating new heroes they copy pasted the familiar and gave it a thin coat of paint, brought back what think our heroes should look like and butchered some of our fondest memories.
The annoying thing about the Plo Koon deception to disguise Luke's return in the Mandalorian.....is that I think Plo Koon would have been a far more exiting reveal.
Nah Plo Koon would’ve had no way near the impact Luke did. Plo Koon is really only relevant to people who have seen the clone wars or are fans of the expanded universe.
You flatter me, thank you skipper. I try my best to give each topic the attention it deserves. Star Wars is / was very important to a lot of people, myself included. I hope the video reflects that.
Imagine a sequel trilogy that actually dealt with the legacy of the republics corruption, and the difficulty of creating an enduring government modeled after one that literally legislated itself out of existence. Imagine.
Could have had a whole story arc about fashioning the Jedi into a watchdog against the inevitable excesses of the new republic, instead of the republics enforcement arm like it was during the clone wars.
My first foray into Star Wars was the Clone Wars series. I was born near the turn of the millennium, I think I wasn't even alive when the prequels began. I loved watching Clone Wars when I was a kid, since it was episodic and my kid brain was so used to watching episodic shows I never questioned if I was missing context that would hinder my enjoyment of the series, I just assumed "well, I probably don't understand this reference to something that already happened because it was in another episode I didn't watch yet, no biggie." I don't live in the US, I didn't know Clone Wars was connected to a greater movie franchise when I began watching it. When I learned the movies existed I decided to watch them... except no one told me the prequel trilogy were made after the original trilogy, I looked up the list of movies and they came up in the story's chronological order, not the order that they were made in. I took one look at the list, didn't question anything, and began watching the phantom menace... It did not go well, by the end of the prequels I was so confused, I did not like seeing the characters I got attached to in clone wars being depicted that way, it dropped my interest in the franchise so much I didn't even watch Rebels, partly because the time-line was making me so confused, by that point I had realized I went about watching Star Wars in an unusual order and I didn't know how to fix it. By the time I was in high school I had already been spoiled of all major plot points of the original trilogy just from being in the internet, so I still haven't bothered to watch it. When the sequel trilogy began I considered going back and watch the movies in the proper order, now that I was older and wiser I was able to judge that better, but then the reviews of Force Awakens came out and even I, someone who only interacted with star wars through second hand means, felt that something was strange. It felt just like the plot points I've heard about the original trilogy. I was watching the trailers and seeing Rey walking the desert with the Droid and Kylo Rens mask with that red light saber and I was just wary the whole time. Series rehashing stories they already told but just with a new coat of paint is one of the things I hate the most in media, cause it feels like they are being lazy and trying to get away with it and they think the audience is too dumb to notice. Do you know that romance movie series thing where the first movie is all about this one couple getting together and the second film is AGAIN about them getting together cause we find out near the beginning of the second movie the couple got separated in-between movies? Watching the Force Awaken trailers gave me the same vibes. They sequel trilogy doesn't feel like a sequel, it feels like a reboot masquerading as a sequel. The only thing I ve heard about the series that sounded remotely interesting was Finns character but when I heard what they did to him and Luke's character in the last jedi I decided I would never watch the sequel trilogy.
I think I will watch the Original Trilogy whenever I can only because I want to enjoy EU stuff, from what I heard just the Heir of The Empire novels are waaaay better than 90% of what Disney put out, I wish Lucas had recognized that when he could.
The amount of Disney apologists that I have interacted with online almost all disregard EU/Legends as messy and confusing. Yet almost none of them have any criticism for Disney's star wars.
I appreciate you starting with Disney decanonizing Legends. I didn't hear about it until after TFA came out and was PISSED when they took so much from EU but changed it to make it worse.
I would have happily met the sequel trilogy half way, i loved the force awakens and the characters it introduced but then after that they just spun in circles and didn’t develop anything and then they just brought back palpatine because they ran out of villains, and now it looks like Disney is just trying to ignore the sequel era because they realize how badly they messed up
I grew up watching the Prequels. I didn't even know the OG trilogy existed, and I wasn't even aware of the sheer weight Darth Vader in pop culture. Then, when I father showed me the Original Trilogy, it was a seamless transition to me, I really followed the story from "start" to "finish". Later I found out the Prequels were hated by the OG fans, and it was even a source of shame to me, because even acknowledging its flaws, it was still special to me (Pod Racing rocks, fight me!). Over time, with the Clone Wars show, people seemed to get more forgiving of the Prequels, and as I learned of the extra content from the games and EU, it all seemed to connect. And then Disney attacked. The Sequels are the sole reason why many OG fans now hold the Prequels in high regards, it's literally the "perhaps I treated you too harshly" Thanos meme. And I too, can understand the frustration of the OG fans when the Prequels came around. Except the Sequels didn't have a single spec of respect for what came before, and the spite K.K and the directors had towards the fandom only added fuel to the fire. They don't care about the story or the universe, it's only a tool for them to push their agenda. They don't care about the fans, they prefer us to be mindless consumers that gobble whatever trash they shit out. K.K doesn't care about carrying the legacy of Lucas, she just wants the recognition of being the head of Star Wars, and looking back, I'm pretty sure Rey is her self-insert character into that mangled, overpriced fanfiction that is the Star Wars Disney Sequels. Everything she had a hand on turned into a stinking pile of shit, and that's why it doesn't matter if Filoni and Fraveaou are directing stuff. So long as she is the top dog, I refuse to have any hopes for Star Wars, because she's just that spiteful and proud. She won't allow the franchise to flourish and succeed without her hand on it, or without it being done her way. I admire the positive note at the end, but I can no longer sustain that. I'll always go back to the old movies, comics and games and shows, but Star Wars is a dead franchise, and we're watching the walking corpse decaying in real time.
Pod Racing does rock, I also grew up watching the prequels and was lucky enough to have a older sister who loved the prequels, even more than the original trilogy.
My issues with Disney started when they cancelled the Clone wars, it was my favourite things about Star wars. They brought it back, but we got less episodes than planned, and we were meant to finish on 8 seasons, what a shame.
If I could try to sell you on the old EU, if you read the comments from a lot of authors, there ARE some who didn't care, some who were abusively controlling, but there were many who were extremely hyped to get to write something for Star Wars. I feel like one of the best examples I can use of this is The Cestus Deception. Ultimately, The Cestus Deception is just a middling book, but the author was so excited that he basically wrote a whole centuries long history for the planet Ord Cestus into the story itself, tying it in to other events in an undisruptive way so that it would make the universe feel richer. In some respects, the EU was a wild west in this regard. But it was a wild west of mostly very, very passionate fans-turned-writers getting a chance to write their own The Cestus Deception. And some were very, very good - people praise the Thrawn Trilogy, but honestly anything by James Luceno would tie in all kinds of obscure lore and make a rich story out of it. Heck, I became a fan of the Prequels' deeper lore not because of TCW, but because Luceno's writing made Prequel politics interesting. The reason I don't like Disney Star Wars isn't just that it removed this, but because their "mythos" (because calling everything "writing" feels like too limiting a word) comes across as comparatively sterile. I don't see a mishmash of passion projects, I just see manufactured projects. Heck, even at Legends Con, one of the writers for TCW and Rebels mentioned that when working for Disney, you don't just answer to Lucas and the story team, you answer to PR teams, lawyers, and others, and they'll tell you to arbitrarily include a new character archetype because they think it will market better. To me, those aren't stories, those are products. As for the video itself, I don't agree with you on Careno. Honestly, it was only a matter of time before her rants made her a full-on brand risk, and I'd have fired her too. They did the same thing to Chuck Wendig, and it was the right call for him too. But other than cringing a bit at the defense of Star Wars Theory (dude didn't even know who Revan was when he called himself an expert), I appreciated that this video didn't delve into ragebaiting. When I see longform videos criticizing Star Wars, I usually expect I'm going to just roll my eyes and close them after two minutes, so this was a nice change of pace.
I really dislike the "cancel-culture" thing myself. Specifically, how brazen some bigots are in their bigotry that they are able distract people from the other bigots who aren't so obvious about it... which allows those smarter bigots to claim foul when rational, educated people call them out on their bigotry. "I didn't say anything wrong. I'm being canceled." :/ Carano... shortly after she was fired, I looked through her twitter feed... nearly every week she's promoting an organization that's helping -- rescuing -- children being trafficked.... yet at the same time she was defending, and promoting, the White Nationalist who was in the White House at the time... the White Nationalist who... trafficked in children. That was just... bizarre. But, that's her ideology. He was her leader, so she stood by him... despite all the girls, and women, he has victimized over the years. What really got her in trouble was making multiple tweets about transpeople... and then tweeting a meme about how the Holocaust happened because people were being silenced. To _me_ she was using the Holocaust as a way to defend herself from criticism. More precisely, she was implying "The Holocause began because people were silent. If you cause people to stop talking, their silence will permit another Holocaust to happen"... when the people she _is_ bigoted against face violence from people like her. Hell! There is a US State Legislature that is trying to make Homosexuality Illegal once more! So, yeah, as you said, she was becoming a danger to the Disney Brand. Then she removes all doubt by joining an organization that's pretty open in its bigotry. *Shrugs* The problem with the ST is... it contradicts what came before. It contradicts itself... I had three expectations going into the theatre. 1. That we get to see Luke's Jedi Academy. 2. That we see how the married couple, Han and Leia are doing. 3. That we see the New Republic deal with a new threat. What I got in the TFA was... New Republic doesn't exist. All the Jedi are dead. Han and Leia broke up... after their son Ben (why was his name Ben?) turned to the Darkside because Snoke Truned him (where was Luke, his Family... why didn't they do something to prevent that?). That... the entire Sequel Trilogy is "the Rebel Alliance 2.0 to take on the Galactic Empire 2.0, lead by Darth Snoke." *Shakes Head* I did the calculations... very rough calculations... but the material used to make Starkiller Base was the equivalent, at a minimum of a Death Star. On top of that, unlike the Death Star, Starkiller Base uses entirely new technologies. The only tech similar to it, in Star Wars Lore, would be Centerpoint Station. Except, that only destabilized the star... not destroy 5 planets in a system. This implies that the First Order is _massive._ So, a small rag tag bunch of "Resistance" Fighters aren't a threat to it... but they are... because they represent "hope that the oppressors of the Galaxy will be defeated if enough people stand up against them". At the same time the First Order hasn't even conquered the Republic, yet. That's the first thing the First Order needed to do, conquer the republic. Then thy can worry about the resistance groups continuing the "good fight". Yet... that's not what the writers wanted... they wanted a Rebels vs Evil Galactic Empire... so the Republic had to be destroyed... and it was.. in a single scene. *Slow Claps* It only gets worse the more I thought about... Then the Last Jedi comes out... and the writer wanted to be different in tone/messaging/style of the other Star Wars movies. He was trying to deconstruct what made Star Wars so popular. While he also just copied previous movie tropes (and scenes) to help display his narrative. Yet, his portrayal of women in that movie... *Spits* They are a caricature of what bigots think of "feminists"... so they all railed against the movie because of "SJWs ruined Star Wars"... like. No. Idiot writers given too much freedom to write whatever they wanted without a master plan they had to stick to is what ruined the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy! If they spent time dissecting the women instead of bashing them... they would realize how effed up the women were too. _General_ Leia... regressed to a sheltered princess who is overly emotional to combat losses. She even physically assaulted a junior officer! "How dare you get all those people killed!" Yes... How dare he order the squadrons under his command to destroy a "Fleet Killer". Then... he's vindicated moments later when the First Order fleet exists hyperspace within attack range of them! Yet, Vice-Admiral Holdo treats him like he's filth. Yet, she too is a caricature... a Caricature of a Person in Power who is to teach their Juniors "to not thinking with their blasters." But, every competent soldier would never serve under her as she had all the _bad_ qualities of a superior officer. Here she was, just having a general meeting with her senior officers... makes a pretty speech... and then... doesn't discuss with them any plans required to get them out of the situation the Incompetent Admiral Akbar, and Emotional Princess Leia, put them in -- I mean, what sot of _competent_ Admiral allows their ships to operate on fumes? -- She refuses to even consider discussing any plans. Hell! She even refuses to admit she _has_ a plan! _Everyone_ knows the situation is dire... that if they don't do anything, they will run out of fuel... and be destroyed. That they only have enough fuel to make a single hyperspace jump... and they were tracked _to_ that system.. thus they can't even use that option Everyone knows they are going to die, so as the Senior Officer, in command, it's _her_ duty to shore up morale by ... making plans. By exuding confidence that some of them _will_ be able to leave the system alive... instead she goes Full on Karen Mode on the second or third most senior officer remaining in front of all the other officers and bridge crew for asking the one question they all wanted to ask; "Do you have a plan?". If she doesn't have a plan... that's what her staff is there to help her with. But, she decides to show them _all_ how contemptuous she is of them. And.. she did have one. A plan that would require tight coordination as the shuttles leave the hangar bay but she didn't even bother trying to _organize_ an evacuation plan, or contingency plans in case things go wrong. She wanted her soldiers to blindly follow orders like She's Emperor Palpatine Reborn! "Captain, Execute Order 404." Again... she's just a Caricature of a civilian's idea of a Senior Officer written to create tension (a reason for Poe and Gang to _do something_ instead of sitting around for 30ish hours). She's not what a feminist would be... despite the writers giving her the stereotypical _physical appearance_ of one. Again, SJWs didn't ruin Star Wars Sequel Trilogy with "Feminism" or "Wokism"... it was ruined through completely avoidable incompetence! Are there good things about Disney Canon? Probably. Do I really care enough about the Disney Wars lore to look for the parts? Nope! Why? As one person commented below, all paths lead to the Sequel Trilogy... and it has destroyed Star Wars by rewriting the laws of Star Wars Physics, irrespective to the unknown fate of the New New New Republic... and the First Not-First Order.
@@aralornwolf3140 Yeah. Honestly, I hate that Star Wars has become a 'culture battleground'. Disney is artificially "woke". They pay lip service, but give zero shits about any ideologies, they're literally just doing what will market best. Meanwhile, Star Wars was literally always political. George Lucas wasn't shy about comparing the Sith to the Bush administration in the middle 2000's. And early, pre-Sith Palpatine was supposed to be a politician 'like Nixon' who sold out and worked for corporations (like Disney). If you ever wonder why "Lucas referred to Disney as white slavers", it's partly misquoting, but also... partly not. Also, many early villains in the EU were, surprise surprise, capitalist coded like the CSA and Tagge family. Then there's Varlance's story in the early, early comics, which honestly in hindsight reads like a self-hating closeted man learning to accept himself and turning from villain to hero, with Stormtroopers saying things like "He's trying to pass!". I guess I'd say... Star Wars was always political. It was just more sincere about it before Disney.
@@keelhaulsthingsthatdontmatter Yeah that's what ESG does. It creates artificial woke because it pays companies to be woke when they otherwise wouldn't be because they'd lose money for it. But ESG helps cover those losses so the companies don't have to worry about tanking profits when the fans of their products get mad. Star Wars was always political, like the Empire had very heavy fascist intonations especially when you consider its overreliance on unwieldy super weapons, terror campaigns and fearmongering draws a direct parallel to late war Nazi Germany. Which I think serves as a motivation for Disney to so heavily push heavy leftist ideology in Star Wars, is because they can just say "it was always there, you just didn't notice it." In addition to the money, obviously.
These types of series retrospectives of Star Wars is always fascinating to me. My personal history is actually from KOTOR, I didn’t like many movies as a kid, Star Wars included, but i loved watching my uncle play KOTOR and eventually started playing it myself. So that was my perspective when I finally got back to the movies and started to enjoy them. The wars and how the characters functioned. And why i never liked the Disney stuff, it always felt fundamentally different from my base of affection. And i acknowledge that holding this old game as the series bedrock is dumb, but it's still how i feel about the series.
Everyone has there own bias that effects their individual enjoyment of Star Wars, myself included. While I do my best to remain objective in my assessments, passion will always bleed through and betray my feelings on the matter. KOTOR was awesome by the way, and there’s nothing wrong with it being the point from which one measures their SW enjoyment.
Actually basing your love of Star Wars on KOTOR isn’t too crazy. It’s kinda like the prequel to the prequels which still sets up a lot about the republic pre clone wars. It’s still cannon and a good Star Wars game too. So there’s that.
SW doesn't even have haters anymore, OG fans stopped caring after Episode 9 because they noticed that Disney also stopped caring, fanboys were LOUD like 4 years ago and that died out, the only "fans" that I can think of are basically stan accounts on twitter posting the dumbest takes ever to gain traction.
My 2 cents for what it's worth. I am in my 50s and was OBSESSED with TOT. To an unhealthy degree. TPM is my favorite prequel for some reason and the rest went in the bin. TFA was ok but boring, but R1 was superb. Then came TLJ and the first time i was bored in a cinema and also disrespected as a patron. I was so annoyed that I decided to not watch Solo at the cinema (which I actually enjoyed on cable). I simply cannot bring myself to pay for content on Disney, even though I want to watch ANdor sooo badly. yes, my few dollars is not going to make a diiference but it is a principle. I'm not screaming The Mouse ruined my childhood or anything, only that they had a real opportunity and wasted it. (I have braced myself for the hatred to follow) but in the words of the Dude...it's just my opinion, man.
35:08 People also *really* didn't like that TCW did to the Clone Wars Multimedia Project what the Sequels did to the rest of the EU: wiped a series of incredibly compelling stories in order to replace them with significantly dumbed down versions while occasionally pillaging them for ideas and then fucking them up too (Asajj Ventress, Quinlan Vos, the Mandalorians, etc.). TCW is everything wrong with the Disney buyout before the Disney buyout even happened.
Exactly, thank you. From the start, Filoni's involvement has been the foundation of this problem. Now people say George was responsible for all of tcw but he held the same position and influence as he did for the 03 show and it was far better. On top of that, filoni even went out of his way to lie to and go against George multiple times. Tcw is his story far more than George's
@@robertogurrola7465 He also used Lucas' authority to get permission to do whatever he pleased. Leeland Chee's position of Keeper of the Holocron (An awesome job title) involved reconciling the various inconsistencies that inevitably popped up, which he did so pretty well. But when _TCW_ came around, Filoni essentially went on a killing spree within the school that was the Expanded Universe, screwing up the established timeline in ways that even Chee couldn't fix, and whenever he objected to it, like when Eeth Koth was inexplicably brought back to life, Filoni would run to -the principal- George Lucas for his permission, and since Lucas was happy to approve almost anything, Chee was powerless to stop his colleague. I honestly feel really bad about Leeland Chee. He got to be the one who made sure everything fit together, doing so in very creative ways, and spoke highly about the Expanded Universe. But then he had to spend six years putting up with the show's retconning spree, only to have Lucasfilm's new leadership render all of his work meaningless by axing the EU, while Pablo Hidalgo, who had previously tried to make _TCW_ fit into what was left of the timeline, betray everything that the EU stood for by pretending that it was "never canon," and even regularly bullying its fans on Twitter without any consequences. Leeland Chee has since gone silent on the matter, and something in the back of my mind is telling me that he is not doing so voluntarily.
yet fans still praise it and beg for george lucas to comeback even when he was involved with it. if you think the old clone wars stories were "compelling" then ive got a bridge to sell ya.
Look, I accept the Disney canon, even though I dont like all of it, but I prefer to have a slight headcanon mixing some legends and some disney. But in all honesty, there is some good things in the Disney canon, like the Clone Wars, Bad Batch, and Rebels, that people hate simply because its Disney. Its really too bad.
For a jellyfish, your analysis was spot on. Unfortunately, this was made before Ahsoka, and Kennedy clearly stuck her big nose in where it doesn't belong. Ahsoka couldn't be more "The Force is female" if it tried. They only kept Ezra because he was a main character, and Thrawn was a joke. What happened to the other male members of the Ghost? No Zeb, no Rex, and it was middling at best. Definitely nit going to save Star Wars without Favreau. Great points about setting the fans up and pulling the rug from under them. It was a long watch, but very well done. Thanks.
Who cares what Disney says. Just bc they said “that thing is not cannon” doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy it. I listen to audiobooks of EU novels all the time
Problem I have with Filoni's writting is that he has somewhat of a light-hearted kid-friendly tone and a way of making it accessible to the children in the way the story is told which work really fine in the cartoon because we know it's trying to reach the kids it's part of the assumption you have going in so all these elements don't feel jarring, it is to be expected... Except it feels like the live action star wars shows are kind of made in the same way they sometime feel like cartoons at place they just shouldn't.
I have 1 simple reason that I haven't watched any Disney Star Wars: I liked the original Trilogy, but I was more a fan of the EU than the movies. Disney killed that. Maybe they're decent films/shows, idk. But the Star Wars I was interested in is no more. The lore I knew is gone, which would make me feel like I'm watching a parody as a starting point. Like, idk that I would say "I hate" Disney Star Wars. But most of my interest died with the EU.
A lot of Disney Star Wars turned me off for a long time. I remember playing Dark Forces 1 and 2 on my computer because I was bored one day, and it made me remember how much I actually loved this fictional world, almost as if I completely forgot.
We can't just have a thing, it end and we say 'that was good'. It has to be milked, it has to be continued, on and on and on until no one is left watching or caring.
JJ realized the problem Michael Arndt ran into when he was writing scripts for all three films. None of them could find a way to include Luke without him completely overshadowing the new characters they wanted us to like. The truth was they should have left it as it was and not made more films.
Exactly, they should have left the Skywalker Saga alone. If they wanted to do other films, then they should have gone a generation or so in the future (or way back in the past) and done something totally new.
I wouldn’t even have done that. Star Wars is the Skywalker Saga. Without it is just a setting. Any future stories are really just reminding of of the better story that was already told. For what it’s worth KOTOR worked so well because it was a video game that allowed the player to live the experience in a way that couldn’t be replicated watching a show. So it is the exception to the rule. The franchise needs to end completely.
@@DouglasLippi Star Trek was designed to have characters that could be used to tell multiple self contained individual stories. This allowed it to extend as long as it has. It allowed it to tell different stories without having to be tied into a central storyline which made it easier to add in new casts, new concepts, etc. It had a couple of spinoffs before fans started to get sick of it. Star Wars was designed to tell a specific story. The Skywalker story was told. Every attempt to extend it has been a recycling of what came before whether that be the EU or the Disney content. Every subsequent iteration has watered it down substantially. It wasn't designed to go on indefinitely. Star Wars needs to end.
@smol_pupper123 I read the majority of the EU novels but I tapped out a couple of books after the NJO series ended. It was entertaining but often derivative. There were pockets of character development but prior to the NJO the OT characters had minimal development. Everything was played very safe. Unfortunately the OT cast was too old, and in Harrison's case too unwilling, to be able to tell all of those stories in 2015. They would have had to skip too many important milestones like Coruscant being changed to a jungle planet and Chewie getting killed to do a live action movie in that timeline. If Disney was smart they could just do animated versions of the EU content but they poisoned the franchise so its a moot point now. The end result is dead franchise is dead.
It is an actual crime to have Andor in the thumbnail. Its not only shockingly different to the sludge that constitutes the other shows so would lack any similar issues... its actually really well written, acted and produced.
I actually ran to the comments to say the same thing because I was going to if no one else had. 😂 Andor was incredible and shouldn't be associated with "why people hate Disney Star Wars" - except in the context that it's everything modern Star Wars has the potential to be, and the bar everything else should be set against (which is why most everything else is disappointing by comparison).
@@workingjellyfish The first 3 are definitely the weakest of the entire series, which on one hand is great because they're still not BAD and it only gets better - but it's a double-edged sword.... I have a friend who watched the first two episodes after hearing from everyone he knows including myself how amazing it is, and he hasn't watched more because he said he didn't get into it. I've tried to tell him how many times that the first two episodes are slow and the third one is where it really kicks off and it just gets better after that.... and he's just like "yeah, I might keep watching it someday...." I'm like, no, you should've already been watched it a while ago.... Missing out on one of the best shows in this decade, and one of the best Star Wars products period, and he doesn't even know it. I know he'll be kicking himself for not watching sooner if he ever does.
@@workingjellyfishAnd you didn’t bother to watch the rest? I skimmed through this video to try to see some acknowledgment of Andor. Sorry, I can’t take seriously any critique of Disney Star Wars that doesn’t at least contrast what a mighty achievement Andor has been.
I was born in 1999, saw Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Solo in the theater. I don't actually remember if I ever even watched episodes 8 or 9 at all, even though I know I did. And that's saying something, something somber... I remember I was 13 when the Disney purchase happened and, though I always loved Disney Channel and Pixar and the classic princess movies, I was distraught. I was playing Battlefield 3 on the PS3 with my friends, when my Mom read the headline to me. I don't remember why I felt this way, but I remember my blood ran cold and I felt as though my cat just died. I was sick, and nobody else quite felt it. I remember I kind of shouted, "That's it! It's dead! They're gonna ruin Star Wars!" I don't think my family or friends realized how I felt in that moment. They all took the optimistic high ground, saying, "Give it a chance," "It'll all be alright," and "At least there'll be more Star Wars..." I always appreciated their optimism, and God bless them for it, because I became one cynical little bastard. I eventually tried to be open minded, ignored the hype, and got myself excited to see The Force Awakens. I think I got halfway? through it before checking out on account of it, as you said, being a higher tech retelling of A New Hope. Böring... I'll always cherish Rogue One, because seeing it in the theater was the last thing I ever did with my Pap. I don't remember much of it, other than my heartbreak and sentimentality attached to my memory of seeing it with my granddad. If I watch it again and it sucks, I'll still love it anyway. I don't remember much about Solo, other than going to see it with my parents and sister, and deciding to myself, "Yeah, it's still better than this new Disney trilogy..." I liked it, but I suppose in the way you like the feeling of 90 degree air in the shade, after you've been in the 110 degree sun for an hour. I need to revisit it... After my disappointment with the Disney Star Wars movies, save for Rogue One and Solo, I was so disheartened, that I fell out of love with Star Wars for over 6 (8?) years. It wasn't until about 2 months ago, that I came back around. I won't leave it again. I love it too much. I just have to roll with the punches and sift through the weeds, from now on. Yeah, like a lot of fans, I grew up on Star Wars. I want to see it flourish. I grew up with the Clone Wars era books and video games, (the God-Tier DK illustrated encyclopedia of The Phantom Menace in my elementary school library,) and Battlefront 2 on PS2 and PSP is still one of my all time favorite games. When I was 4, I lost 60% of my hearing in either ear, for no apparent reason at all. When I got my first hearing aids at 6, it was the scenes and memories of Luke and Anakin with their prosthetic arms that made me feel more confident and comfortable in having, essentially, prosthetic ears. Also Lobot. I'll never forget feeling like I could relate to Lobot. When I was struggling in school because of my hearing and my ADHD, my parents encouraged my improvement in class by offering Star Wars figures as a weekly reward for good grades. It was super effective! I hold a Bachelor's in History now... Star Wars shaped my childhood and had a notable role to play in me becoming the man I am today. Despite any and all flaws, I love the Clone Wars movies and series, The Mandalorian, and even Book of Boba Fett. I haven't actually seen much else outside of the original trilogies, but I DEARLY want to be open minded and optimistic toward them. I really am just happy to have new Star Wars content to immerse myself in. I hate the feeling of walking on thin ice, wondering if the next thing that comes out is going to be good or really bad. That's not Star Wars... Star Wars isn't that much of a crap shoot. I just wish the Disney would shove off, and take their greedy, soulless, industrial, "processed food quality," "money is God," mentality with them. And maybe not call the fans a bunch of racists, while ignoring what they did with the movie posters in China... Maybe go throw their attitudes and mindsets off the same cliff they chased all those lemmings over years ago... Sorry for the rant. Loved your video; it got me fired up, and got you a subscriber.
Thanks for sharing mate, how bloody good were those DK visual encyclopaedias? 😀 I too am far to entrenched to give up on Star Wars, and remain hopeful that we’ll eventually breakthrough the fog of lies Disney has created and see a new era of quality content. In the interim, I will poke fun at Disney from the safety of my sheltered harbour. Thanks for the sub, you are most welcome here.
God I hate that Rey is a Palpatine, it makes the entire story seem like these new stories were created just to destroy people's natural belief that good triumphs over evil. Instead we get 3 films from the art school neomodernist braintrust. Thank you Disney Princesses for even creating a Princess of the Sith or Empress (yep) without even knowing you did it. Now just make Rey sing and dance and it will appeal to the Disney fandom everywhere. I just wish Star Wars would go far far away. Lets hope Rebel Moon can show Star Wars how to make a Star Wars franchise but it looks like more unreal engine trash as well.
As what looks like a last minute writing decision to capitalise on the meme power of Ian “I am the senate” McDiarmid it did irreparable damage to the Skywalker legacy. Honestly I agree, I wish Disney would just leave Star Wars alone at this point.
Why do people hate Disney Star Wars? Well, considering most of it is like watching a 10 hour loop of the dance sequence from Jabba’s palace in the special editions, I think it’s a reasonable reaction.
This was a pretty fantastic video. The only thing that i would say you missed or might've gotten wrong was that Lucas knew how big the EU was getting, and yeah it can get pretty confusing but thats why he had a story group of lore masters to organize it all and establish what had priority and what didn't. Like for example TFU novel was prioritized over the game as the official story. And to avoid overlapping stories or repeated stories being told from different authors. And on Ahsoka, Lucas had intended for her to die, because she's not present in the OT. Filoni continuing to keep her alive all the way up to the ahsoka show leaves a huge continuity problem on top of a multitude of other problems with continuity especially in disney star wars specifically. At this point I will just stick to the EU, it had way more hits than misses and it does have misses, ill never say it was perfect, but I gave disney several chances, and im not gonna cherry pick like alot of other people do. "Disney star wars is awful/dead, but i love andor and I love the clone wars", those kinds of people. I firmly believe Filoni's trust was misplaced and Jon favreu was never a good fit for star wars. i think they did more damage than we thought Kathleen kennedy did. "All roads lead to the sequel trilogy", and adapting a major EU story would only stir the pot with disgruntled fans.
Indeed😊
RIP Mr Rogers
He was one of the last real kids entertainers who understood his audience.
As a former child, I can confirm.
Like AtlA for me
I enjoyed it as a kid, as a teen, and still as an adult
And through each stage I understood different parts of it better seeing it with more and less life experience
''somehow, palpatine returned'' is the worse line spoken in the history of cinema.
Somehow, this script was approved.
That's a good question, for another time. Pretty bad too.
Idk “a good question…for another time” is way up there lol
"I have no name, but a Jedi like you might call me Sith".
God, that "I am all the Sith" "And I am all the Jedi" is kinder playground level dialogue.
Not even up to that level
It’s straight up just ripping off the snap from Endgame with none of the emotional payoff. They really thought Rey saying “I am all the Jedi” after taking over their entire legacy, was going to even hold a candle to “I… am… Iron Man.” Tony’s sacrifice still gives me chills years later. Rey’s still makes me cringe.
That entire scene was frankly a huge letdown in terms of script quality. Even Sidious didn’t sound like Sidious. Then you had an extremely overdone sequence of several throwback character voices all taking turns repeating *the same exact line*.
Only Valkorion could pull that off
And he had the power to back it up
@@epiczk0n141 Well you did just compare apples to oranges. Because Rey doesn't make a sacrifice...Tony does.
What does Rey lose when she delivers that line? Nothing. She just drops a one liner with no loss.
The comparisons of reviews before and after the last jedi is hilarious

I still remember being in the restaurant next to the movie theater with my wife, doing everything I could to keep the mystery of the film for myself. I told her that I hadn’t looked up reviews yet, but I had heard lots of good things, and how they already greenlit a sequel for the director.
To demonstrate the point, I pulled up Rotten Tomatoes. And then… I saw the audience score.
If only I had had the presence of mind to say “I have a bad feeling about this.”
I came out of TFA thinking, "Well, I didn't much like that, but they left a lot of dangling threads. Maybe my opiniom will change when they resolve some of those in the next one."
Well, I can honestly say that my opinion changed. Not favorably, but it changed.

Dude, watching Mark throughout this all is heartbreaking
Funny thing is that in interviews, he stressed that he liked the movies, but as we all know, he was keeping his real opinions to himself.

The real question is: Why does Disney hate Star Wars?
@@PrimoPetebusiness people making the worst business decision with a franchise that has possible infinite profit 🤔
The more important question is why do you people pretend the hate for the prequels never happened? We've been through this before.
They don't so much hate Star Wars as they hate the audience that it comes tied with. Or more specifically their expectations. If they could puppet around Star Wars' skin while not putting in the effort for attention to detail, they would.
I remember back when Disney first bought Star Wars and someone on a podcast said "Well they can't do any worse than Lucas did with the prequels." and even in that moment (maybe just because I disliked Disney already) I knew that that take wouldn't age well
Idk why I held out but it was Jack Pattillo during an RT Podcast that said it
You've been vindicated all these years later
the funny thing was, Lucas always planned for Episodes 1-3 to come out.
Matt stone and Trey Parker had that take on one of their commentaries for southpark and they even did episodes later roasting it.
I was a prequel defender since I saw pod racing for the first time. I endured years of backlash for my view but once the sequel trilogy dropped I look back and smile. You didn't appreciate what was there until it was gone. It's poetic justice.

I never get why anyone would like the thought of Palpatine return, wouldn't that just ruin Vader's sacrifice and return to good.
What a great analogy!
The old Expanded Universe stories where Palpatine returns as a clone or spirit were decent.
But this was handled tremendously badly.
They did Finn dirty. Even shrinking him on the China poster, insult to injury.
Its really funny that they champion DEI when they are actively racist for a quick buck
Actually they flat out removed him from one of the movies and the posters in China.
I think we all thought Finn was going to be a jedi
mark's response to people applauding rian not caring about the fans is very real to me
Even though I despise what Rian did. The true magnitude of KK's planned destruction of Star Wars was probably not fully apparent. The pressure was probably incredible.

Thanks mate, it was too accurate to leave out.
We all felt that way. Now here we remain: the survivors of Disney's Order 666
My reaction after palpatine return from the dead

The difference is that it was done in good faith. Disney has been paid specifically to make terrible content by companies such as black rock.
Disney Stars Wars feels like it was created by a committee, because it was/is.
The prequels did not tell that story arc at all. Rushed, poorly written and tonally terribly.
with all respect to Lucas, but the prequels are just a fascinating character study about a man's hubris and distance from reality, thinking that anything we would write on that yellow paper noteblock with his pen would turn into nothing but artistic gold

The Yuuzhan Vong was the first series of books I read. I fucking loved them.
all you have to look at is KOTOR 2 for what Star Wars storytelling can be.
There are a few good things in SW canon, but yeah the EU would always be a part of Star Wars.
Your collection sounds so sicc!
And it can ve revived but never by disney
When Disney decanonized the EU I knew stuff was going to be bad, but I still deluded myself that at least the movies would be decent, after watching Episode 7, I no longer had any such delusions. I haven't given disney a cent since then. But I still love the EU, I couldn't care less about the disney universe, I simply ignore it.
Born in 00 yet saw phantom menace in 99? In theaters? I sense a trap
Not a word. 😢
No one on the Disney Lucasfilm staff is intelligent enough to write a believable Thrawn, though.

I saw rise of the Skywalker with my 10 yr old cousin's family and a friend of theirs from outside the US that had never seen a star wars before. Afterwards all she said, with utter confusion, was, "are they all like this?"
What bummed me out most, probably, is that they decided to keep the dumbest stuff from the old canon in particular, like:
"It's the empire again!"
"Somehow, Palpatine came back!"
"They built another planetkiller."
Palpatine, empire and planetkiller get blown up by a single snub fighter or a 3 man party on foot with with main character level plot armor... again.
"And they cloned Palpatine again. And there it comes again, the empire. With 3 new planetkillers in tow"
They are all blown up by a snub fighter or a 3 man party on foot with main character level plot armor... again...
I'd argue The Force Awakens is the worst of the sequels for exactly this reason.
All three movies suck, but at least the other two did some things differently.
TFA was just a worse version of ANH, and why would I waste my time watching an inferior copycat when I can watch the original?
The Cycle will NOT Be Broken
This spoke to me
I was born in 87, sorta grew up the same time as you... The Star Wars toys were WAY cooler then... Micromachines and Kenner were awesome!
And it will be even worse.

You love franchises
God tier video essay. Earned a sub. It’s a damn shame what’s happened to Star Wars.
Thanks for the kind words and sub, mate.
It's a shame about Andor, because it is probably the best thing Disney has done with Star Wars.
😂
It's kinda rare to get a show that's still Star Wars in it's own way.
Totally agree
Andor is honestly one of the only things about Disney Star Wars that's made me feel something meaningful. It's my favorite Star Wars TV show other than TCW.
Teasing us with the reactivation of R2D2 at the end of episode 7, I thought , "Great! We're going to see Luke again! Hopefully we can forget all about this stupid movie and get on with real Star Wars again."
Then we got episode 8. They took everything that Luke ever stood for and trampled it under their feet. What came after that was an apothy that I still feel.
You are in good company.
Luke must eventually have learned the truth…that his mother was responsible for putting Emperor Palpatine on the throne, that the Empire was, indeed, just the same old Republic with a change in management philosophy, that which side was good and which was bad was a matter of perspective after all.

I concur.

I'm still struggling to understand how anyone legitimately enjoyed the force awakens to begin with
Because everything was ripped from A New Hope.
It brought back entire original cast as well… hmmm
Honestly, the most memorable part of the movie is the death of Han.
Explains why I never liked her, even as a kid

So he somehow acknowlegded it, even if his stories were canon. Also there is a different view of the author of it all , and someone that just takes over... So what you wrote isnt really true.
Her direct quote "There's no source material," Kennedy said. "We don't have comic books. We don't have 800-page novels. We don't have anything other than passionate storytellers who get together and talk about what the next iteration might be."
Tahts udenfenadable imho.
"A black man in the spotlight" The irony
The problem probably comes from narcecists being involved, remember when Ryan got pissed at critism and then claimed he didn't?
I had a similar experience. Had someone tell me that the Force Awakens was the “perfect Star Wars movie” and that I was not a “true Star Wars fan” for not thinking so. I guess I’m not… since I have skipped several of the movies and series based on poor reviews at this point.
Hashtag Lando
Oh yeah.
I'm excited for Disney to go bankrupt and sell Star Wars to HBO tbh.
Oh boy wait till this guy sees Acolyte 😅
Going to need a lot of there theres 😂
Used to love him. Now his DSP-looking arse has proven his incompetence, I think a lot of people despise him.
Granted the Clone Wars actually was Really good. George lucas directly oversaw production on the clone wars which is more than likely why the series turned out to be a masterpiece, unlike rebels.
Filoni never cared about Lucas's vision, even during TCW. He writes his personal, whimsically childish fanfiction and nothing more.
@@bluehero-96ah, yes. Tonight's episode, the writer's barely disguised fetish, starring Space Wolves and Orange Buttcheeks.
There is an entire universe of possibility to SW. Instead of exploring or even creating new heroes they copy pasted the familiar and gave it a thin coat of paint, brought back what think our heroes should look like and butchered some of our fondest memories.
“Before the dark times, before the (Disney) Empire.”
Your Channel is great. Your opinions and editing are awesome. Keep it up, you deserve more subscribers and viewers.
Thank you, that means a great deal to me. “If you build it, they will come”.
For such a small account, your production quality, polish and communication are spectacular. Literally better than most giant channels
Disney imagines things, not you
Nah. Boring politics led to the prequels failure. What we wanted was the Thrawn Trilogy on the big screen
My first foray into Star Wars was the Clone Wars series. I was born near the turn of the millennium, I think I wasn't even alive when the prequels began.
I loved watching Clone Wars when I was a kid, since it was episodic and my kid brain was so used to watching episodic shows I never questioned if I was missing context that would hinder my enjoyment of the series, I just assumed "well, I probably don't understand this reference to something that already happened because it was in another episode I didn't watch yet, no biggie."
I don't live in the US, I didn't know Clone Wars was connected to a greater movie franchise when I began watching it.
Now that is a unique viewing history, for sure. Thanks for sharing.
I think I will watch the Original Trilogy whenever I can only because I want to enjoy EU stuff, from what I heard just the Heir of The Empire novels are waaaay better than 90% of what Disney put out, I wish Lucas had recognized that when he could.
You are a bit weird
The amount of Disney apologists that I have interacted with online almost all disregard EU/Legends as messy and confusing. Yet almost none of them have any criticism for Disney's star wars.
I appreciate you starting with Disney decanonizing Legends. I didn't hear about it until after TFA came out and was PISSED when they took so much from EU but changed it to make it worse.
Like it's very stupid of them to decanonize the EU.
I'm predicting this video and your channel to blow any day now, keep up the well made, well researched, well argued and well funny work.
Thanks mate. I’m happy so many people are enjoying my work. 🐙
Answer to title: they watched it
If I could try to sell you on the old EU, if you read the comments from a lot of authors, there ARE some who didn't care, some who were abusively controlling, but there were many who were extremely hyped to get to write something for Star Wars.
I'm being canceled." :/
Carano... shortly after she was fired, I looked through her twitter feed... nearly every week she's promoting an organization that's helping -- rescuing -- children being trafficked.... yet at the same time she was defending, and promoting, the White Nationalist who was in the White House at the time... the White Nationalist who... trafficked in children.
*Shrugs*
The problem with the ST is... it contradicts what came before.
That... the entire Sequel Trilogy is "the Rebel Alliance 2.0 to take on the Galactic Empire 2.0, lead by Darth Snoke."
*Shakes Head*
I did the calculations... very rough calculations... but the material used to make Starkiller Base was the equivalent, at a minimum of a Death Star.
*Slow Claps*
It only gets worse the more I thought about...
With regards to that last bit, separate art from artist. A terrible person can make a good show. Good show is good. Bad person is bad. That is all.

@@staticaleel5068HK 47 explains Palpatine's plan before episode 3 even came out.
I could’ve written a better sequel trilogy in my basement with my cats as co-writers than Disney did

My dad told me that he saw the original in a theater with sense around, so that when the Star Destroyer flew overhead, the theater shook.
If you don't want to give your money to Disney to see Andor just pirate it. It is truly a masterpiece and definitely worth watching.

People also *really* didn't like that TCW did to the Clone Wars Multimedia Project what the Sequels did to the rest of the EU: wiped a series of incredibly compelling stories in order to replace them with significantly dumbed down versions while occasionally pillaging them for ideas and then fucking them up too (Asajj Ventress, Quinlan Vos, the Mandalorians, etc.). TCW is everything wrong with the Disney buyout before the Disney buyout even happened.
Brought to you by Dave Filoni
@@Blanktester685 Let's not pretend that these are the same fans who took issue with the blatant retconning spree that the show went on.
Bro I just wanted to say you put a serious amount of effort into this video... Great job thank you
Thanks mate, Star Wars is an important topic for me, and it deserved the best video I could put together.
@@workingjellyfish well there's doing a job right and there's doing a job half-assed and you definitely did it right
For a jellyfish, your analysis was spot on. Thanks.
Yeah, that optimistic ending seems a little bitter sweet now eh? The good news, curtesy of Ahsoka, I have a new video on the way. 😆
Call it what it is. Filoni doesn't write for a child. He writes LIKE a child. He really should be vilified like Kennedy, J.J., etc.
@@bluehero-96specifically, he writes like a 13 year old struggling with puberty.
Thus, the endlessly memed space wolves and Orange Buttcheeks.
@@bluehero-96 yet in the same breath you and the rest of the fanbase praise clone wars?
@@bluehero-96nah, he actually made good star wars shows in the past.
@MaticTheProto
Having seen the "good" Star Wars shows, no he hasn't.
"Apathy is death." - some old woman who no one cares about.
I disagree. A franchise can go on indefinitely if great new characters and ideas are brought forth. Star Trek the Next Generation is a good example.
My first foray into the Legends EU was the Knights of The Old Republic games.
It was down the rabbit hole from there. lol
It is an actual crime to have Andor in the thumbnail. Its not only shockingly different to the sludge that constitutes the other shows so would lack any similar issues... its actually really well written, acted and produced.
I really enjoyed Andor. I even did a review of the first 3 episodes (which didn't get much love, sadly).
BUT a great number of ex-fans still haven't seen it and won't see it because the other tripe posted them so far away
I too am far to entrenched to give up on Star Wars, and remain hopeful that we’ll eventually breakthrough the fog of lies Disney has created and see a new era of quality content.
In the interim, I will poke fun at Disney from the safety of my sheltered harbour. Thanks for the sub, you are most welcome here.
This some kind of labor of love to have made this review. Well done. Bravo. May the force stay with you.
You leave Max Rebo and the Jizz-wailers out of this! 😆
@@workingjellyfish I like them in the original version, but the special edition with the dance number and screaming potato I cannot abide lol
Watching Mark hold his head after trying to address the concerns of the fans hurt. We still love you Mark! You’re still our hero!
