  • A flight in the Beech Bonanza, in real time, from Chicago DuPage to Midway. You can se three camera angles and a map at all times. Watch it in up to 4K resolution.
    We had just dropped off an Angel Flight passenger in DuPage and continued from there to Chicago Midway on an IFR flight plan. With me in the cockpit is Sebastien Ayrolles, a friend, coworker and also a pilot himself who was visiting from France.

    Great video Martin. I first saw your KMSP video which is where I live as a private pilot. Keep the videos coming! I love all of them and will watch any and everything.

      Glad to hear - I haven't done one like this since the DuPage-to-Midway flight. Maybe I should make another one like it.

    I realized that you've been very busy especially during the approach, paying attention to the ATC, preparing the set-ups and responding to your friend sometimes....

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 года назад +1

      Lots of things competing for attention. Developing a way to prioritize tasks and making sure everything important is covered is very important for flying, but especially for instrument flying.

    Nice job Martin. I fly out of Aurora and avoid DuPage when I can. Controllers think they are auditioning for O'Hare, hence they talk fast, and are generally the least friendly in the area.

      Thanks, Gary. I've been to Aurora a number of times, too - JA Air there is a fabulous FBO. DuPage was a nice experience, too, though - I love the terminal building there.

    Great video, I'm looking forward to that view of Chicago's skyline on my way to Oshkosh this year. The four video grid is a great idea. I would have enjoyed a camera showing the instruments but, in my experience it's hard to get the gauges and the view outside without one of them being washed out.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад

      +Geoffrey Gallaway I guess I'll have to get more cameras, to cover the instruments. The tricky part is where to mount the cameras - not so easy.

      +Martin Paule +1 for a instruments view. I'd like to monitor airspeed, altitude and attitude (pitch) especially. Maybe you can mount on the pilot-side window above the outside temperature gauge? Thanks much for all the work you put into these videos -- very instructional and enjoyable.

      @martinpauly  8 лет назад

      Andrew, yes, that's possible - here is an example: ruclips.net/video/WWv_kv90feQ/видео.html
      Now, depending on what I am trying to show in a given video, this may be of more or less interest - so I don't expect I'll include this in all videos.

    Great video. I love the 3 views and especially the moving chart. Why the shutter artifacts of the prop on the forward view?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад

      +Mike Dunlop Thanks, Mike. The artifact you see on the prop is caused by the so-called rolling shutter of the GoPro cameras. Here is a great description:
      petapixel.com/2015/11/14/this-is-how-cameras-glitch-with-photos-of-propellers/
      That same rolling shutter system causes the "jello effect", i.e. the waves you can sometimes see in the picture. There are
      Cameras with a global shutter do not have these issues, but unfortunately they are are a lot more expensive. That may change over time, but for now they beyond what I can afford.

    Martin, why didn't you file a VFR FPL? Seems much easier to me for such a shirt flight.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 года назад +1

      Hi Daniel. Just going VFR (without a flight plan, with flight following from ATC) would have been easiest. But flight following is done on a workload-permitting basis, and the most reliable way for ATC to help me stay clear of other aircraft is an IFR flight plan.
      Regards,
      Martin

    Another good one, teasing me a bit more....did you start on a bonanza or had something else before?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад

      I've been flying for just over 30 years. Started with gliders, then later airplanes. I've only flown the Bonanza for four years; prior to that I was in a partnership with a Piper Arrow.

      +Evilec Paz I'm new to the world of 4K. So far, RUclips is not showing me better than 360p resolution - hopefully it'll catch up and allow all the up to 2160p.
      The file sizes are huge. The file I uploaded was over 5 GB, encoding took about 18 hours. And the working files from the editor were over 200 GB.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад

      +Martin Pauly Looks like it is now working in all resolutions up to 2160p. Maybe it just needed a little more time.

    Can you post the costs for Atlantic?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад +1

      +Jos Bren Yes - Atlantic collected a landing fee of $7.50 and a security fee of $15.00. The handling fee, normally $40, was waived with our fuel purchase. Parking was free for our short stay (three or four hours); I've paid $20/night on previous trips.

    Stressful ugh! Why do you do this to yourself!?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  8 лет назад +2

      +Pete Kuhns Pete, I'd call it high workload, not really stressful for the most part. There are of course moments of anxiety, for example when I'm unsure about something the controller tells me, or when traffic is pointed out to me that I can't see yet. But I think to some extent that's part of any kind of flying.
      If nothing else, I find it a lot of fun and vey rewarding.
