Is Mark 16:9-20 Authentic? | Episode 82

  • Some modern translations, including the New International Version, include the following note after Mark 16:8: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9-20.” A similar insertion is found at the end of John 7. It reads, “The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53-8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.”
Considering this, should Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11 be included in our Bibles? Dr. David K. Bernard explains the reasons why some modern translations include these textual notes, and why we can trust the authenticity of both Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11.
For a more detailed discussion of this topic, see Dr. Bernard's book "God's Infallible Word," available at pentecostalpublishing.com/pro....

Everyone I've personally met who has a problem with the end of Mark has a problem with Mark 16:16 specifically, as they don't accept that water baptism is a necessary action for salvation.

It is also doesn't teach it necessary for salvation, in fact with basic math formula you can see it does
      A+B=C
      A≠C
We see though often B=C so B is the important part not. Meaning the thing that saves is faith and baptism doesn't save.

Jesus came for the lost sheep of Israel. He did not acknowledge gentiles with only a couple of exceptions. He was talking to Jews . After the fall of the Jews the gentiles received Grace as a Gift not of works lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2 :8-9. Jesus Christ our Lord simply had Divine mercy on us the gentiles. You will never understand the bible if you try to fit all of it into your particular doctrine. Paul was chosen and sent to and for the Gentiles meaning non -Jews.

@@MichaelTheophilus906 Hello Michael. I believe the Bible clearly teaches that there is one God in three persons. Not Three Gods. One God. Acts 7:55,56 and the countless of other scriptures saying the same thing. Jesus is not at the right hand of a Metaphor, or an expression of glory and power. No, He is at the right side of His Father. Another member of the Godhead. Who is full of power and glory. The book of Revelations clearly reveals the trinity. Please read Revelation 5:13. Unto Him who sits on the throne, and unto the lamb forever and forever. The Lamb is Jesus. Two different individuals. Revelations 6:16. 7:10 7:17 21:22. I love my oneness brothers and sisters. I love to listen to them sing, pray, and preach. I believe David Bennard is a great man of God. I have listened to just about all his debates on the oneness of God. He is a fierce debater. However, when I read the Bible it clearly reveals that there is one God in three persons.

Many ask their Priest or Pastor if speaking in Tongues as the Spirit gives utterance is needed to be Saved and they say something like, "Definitely not." Or many say something like, "I don't know if I want to get involved in that speaking in tongues thing, that's a little too weird and hardcore for me." They say that because they don't know about the following scriptures, or have ignored them. Please note the information below is not taught at any Catholic or Protestant Church, nor is it taught at any Catholic or Protestant Seminary School, or at any Catholic or Protestant Divinity School.
The following is some word for word scriptures about speaking in Tongues as the Spirit gives utterance:
Jesus said in Mark 16:17,"And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES." Jesus previously told his disciples in Acts 1:8,"But you will receive POWER after the Holy Ghost is come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto ME both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth."
Acts 2:3-4, (at Pentecost),"And it appeared to unto them cloven TONGUES LIKE AS OF FIRE, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST, and they began TO SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES as the SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE."
Acts 8:14-17,"Now when the apostles, which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. 15 Who when they were come down, prayed for them that they MIGHT RECEIVE THE HOLY GHOST. 16 For as yet he was fallen upon none of them, only they were BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. 17 Then LAID THEY THEIR HANDS ON THEM and they RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST."
Acts 9:17-18, (Paul's baptism)"And Ananias went his way and entered into the house, and PUT HIS HANDS ON HIM and said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto you in the way as you came, has sent me, that you might receive your sight, AND BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes that as it had been scales, he received his sight forthwith, and arose, and was BAPTIZED."
Acts 10:44-48, (Peter speaking to Cornelius and those with him), "While Peter yet spake these words, THE HOLY GHOST FELL ON THEM which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, that on the Gentiles also was poured out the GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. 46 For they heard them SPEAK WITH TONGUES and magnify God, and then answered Peter. 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be BAPTIZED, which have received the HOLY GHOST as well as we. 48 And he commanded them to be BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD."
In Acts 19:1-6, Paul met 12 believers in Ephesus and asked them, 2 Have you received the Holy Ghost since you BELIEVED? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were you baptized? And they said unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. 6 And when Paul LAID HIS HANDS ON THEM, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they SPOKE WITH TONGUES and prophesied." Those scriptures prove that just because a person is a believer does not mean they are automatically saved, and just because a person is a believer does not mean they automatically have the Holy Ghost..
Jesus said in John 7:38-39,"He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER. 39 But this he spoke of the SPIRIT, which they that believe on him should receive, for the HOLY GHOST was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified."
Paul said in Galatians 1:12 that he was not taught by any man, but was taught by Jesus himself, which means that everything Paul said was exactly what Jesus told him to say.
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:2,"He that SPEAKS IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE EDIFIES HIMSELF...."
Paul said that Jesus said in 1 Corinthians 14:21,"In the law it is written, With men of other TONGUES and other lips will I speak unto this people, and yet for all that, THEY WILL NOT HEAR ME, saith the Lord." Verse 39 says,"Wherefore brethren, covet to prophesy, AND FORBID NOT TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES."
The following scriptures prove that when a person first speaks with Tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, it is at that moment the Spirit of Christ initially dwells in them, and no where in scripture does it happen any other way than this way:
Paul said in Galatians 3:27,"For as many of you as have been BAPTIZED into Christ HAVE PUT ON CHRIST."
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:22,"Wherefore TONGUES are for a SIGN (or PROOF they received the Holy Ghost)...."
Paul said in Romans 8:9-11,"But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, HE IS NONE OF HIS. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLS IN YOU." That is referring to being raised up to meet Jesus in the air at the Rapture which is referred to in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, which Paul also wrote. If a person has not been baptized in Jesus name, (not the titles Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) meaning Jesus name is said at baptism which is Acts 2:38, Acts 8:14-18, Acts 8:38, Acts 9:17-18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 16:15, Acts 16:33, Acts 18:7, Acts 18:8, Acts 19:3-5, and Acts 22:16 - which all of those WERE FOR THE REMISSION OF SIN, and has not been baptized with Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit, they will not have that Spirit that will allow them to meet Jesus in the air at the Rapture, and therefore not be saved. Jesus disciples were doing exactly what Jesus told them to do in Matthew 28:19,"Go therefore and teach all nations BAPTIZING them in the name (SINGULAR name and not names) OF the Father, and OF the Son, and OF the Holy Ghost." Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are titles and not names. Jesus disciples never used those words when they baptized anyone in water, nor did they use those words in one sentence regarding any other topic. All the above is exactly what Jesus meant in John 3:7,"You MUST be born again." In John 3:5 he said, "Verily, verily I say unto you, Except a man be born of water AND of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God." Regarding Baptism - Jesus said in Mark 16:16,"He that believes and is BAPTIZED shall be saved, but he that believes not shall be damned." There Jesus links not being baptized in Jesus name with damnation. Being born of water is being immersed in water (baptized) in Jesus name, being born of the Spirit is being baptized with the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit. Being baptized with the Holy Ghost means is addressed in Acts 2:4, (Pentecost) Acts 8:17, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, and Acts 19:3-5.
Jesus said in John 10:27,"My Sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

If the gospel of Mark ended in verse eight of chapter 16, then it is a gospel that ends in defeat, a gospel that ends in fear. Notice that verse eight says they were afraid or fearful depending on the translation. Every other gospel, Matthew Luke and John end with victory, but the gospel of mark would end in defeat if it truly ended in verse eight. Thank God for the truth it ends in victory with the commission of preaching the gospel, baptizing people for salvation, and healing and miracles and speaking in tongues as taught in the final verses of chapter 16.

Excellent presentation. In regard to taking up serpents he gives a good explanation referring to the apostle Paul at the end of the book of acts. Paul picked up some wood to throw into a fire and the serpent bit him. It was all accidental. God protected Paul. years ago in Northern California one lady in the church was bit by accident by a rattlesnake. A few of the church members told her we will take you to the hospital. She replied, take me to the church for prayer. She and a few others went to the church to pray. This lady told God, Lord, you did it for Paul you can do it for me. She put her trust in God and the venom of that rattlesnake did not affect her at all. She was made whole just like the apostle Paul was. And both the stories tie in with the part of serpents mentioned towards the end of Mark chapter 16.

This subject needs dealt with in a deeper way in more open forums than just a university classroom setting. It should be dealt with in ministers meetings of all kinds. How about the UPC update its statement on Bible translations? That would be huge. For too long, there have been many that are KJVO that nearly break fellowship over Bible translation issues. While the NIV is not my preferred translation, I would never tell someone to not use it. I would suggest that they also use a more word for word translation like the NKJV, or the NASB or ESV. The KJV is a tremendous translation but is too archaic for me to recommend as a primary Bible.

The following is Scriptural proof who Jesus really is and that He is much more than just the Son of God.
Paul said in Galatians 1:12 that he was not taught by any man but was taught by Jesus himself which means whatever Paul said was what Jesus told him to say. Paul said in 1 Timothy 3:16,"AND WITHOUT CONTROVERSY GREAT IS THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS, GOD was manifest in the FLESH (Jesus), justified in the SPIRIT, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up into glory."
Paul said in 2 Corinthians 3:17,"Now the LORD IS THAT SPIRIT, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty." Jesus is speaking in Revelation 2:7,"He that has an ear, let him hear what the SPIRIT says to the churches...." And Paul said in Ephesians 4:4, "For there is one body, ONE SPIRIT....verse 5 ONE LORD, ONE Faith and ONE BAPTISM."
Paul said in Colossians 2:8-10,"Beware lest any man fool you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 FOR IN HIM DWELLS ALL THE FULLNESS OF THE GODHEAD BODILY." Jesus is not just part of the Godhead - Jesus IS the Godhead.
Paul said in Hebrews 1:8, "But unto the SON he said, Thy throne O GOD is forever and ever...." Jesus said in Revelation 21:6-7,"And he said unto me (John) it is done, I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I (Jesus) will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of life freely. 7 He that overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his GOD, and he shall be my SON."
Paul said in Titus 2:13, "Looking for that blessed hope, and glorious appearance of the great GOD and our SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST."
Acts 7:59, "And they stoned Stephen, calling upon GOD, and saying LORD JESUS, receive my spirit."
1 John 5:20,"And we know that the SON of God is come, and has given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his SON Jesus Christ, THIS IS THE TRUE GOD, AND ETERNAL LIFE."
Isaiah 9:6,"For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son (Jesus) is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, THE MIGHTY GOD, THE EVERLASTING FATHER, ..." Jesus said in Revelation 1:8, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, says the Lord, which is, which was, and is to come, THE ALMIGHTY." Jesus said in Revelation 2:7, "He that has an ear, let him hear what the SPIRIT says unto the Churches....."
Jesus said in Mark 16:16, "He that believes and is BAPTIZED shall be Saved, but he that believes not shall be damned." Jesus addressed what damned means in Luke 16:19-31, Matthew 13:42, Matthew 25:41, Mark 9:45-46, Revelation 20:15, and Revelation 21:8.
Jesus said in Matthew 28:19, "Go therefore and teach all nations BAPTIZING them in the name (SINGULAR name and not names) OF the Father, and OF the Son, and OF the Holy Ghost." Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are titles and not names. Every time Jesus disciples baptized anyone in water they invoked Jesus Name at baptism which is Acts 2:38, Acts 8:14, Acts 8:38, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 16:15, Acts 16:33, Acts 18:7, Acts 18:8, Acts 19:3-5, and Acts 22:16. Peter said in Acts 4:12, "Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is NONE OTHER NAME under heaven given among men whereby we must be SAVED."
Some say the thief on the cross next to Jesus was not Baptized yet Jesus told him he would be with him that day in Paradise. Jesus had not yet given the COMMANDMENT to be Baptized in His Name until after he rose from the dead and just before he ascended into heaven. The thief or anyone else could not have been Baptized in His Name because they did not know about it. There is no t one scripture that says a person receives the Holy Ghost just because they are a believer. Acts 19:1-5 is a good example.
If you are convinced you need to get Baptized in water in Jesus Name and get Baptized with the Holy Ghost - which is addressed in Mark 16:17 (Jesus speaking): Acts 2:4 (Pentecost), Acts 8:17, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, and Acts 19:3-5. Do a search, type in "United Pentecostal Church International", slightly scroll down to just below the red box, and type in your zip code. Then a screen will show a Church nearest you that will do that.
If you do the above you will be making SURE your name is written in the Lamb's Book Of Life.
Jesus said in John 10:27,"My Sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Less than 300 years after the Bible was completed, a Trinitarian writer added to 1 John 5:7 the words “in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” This addition doesn’t appear in the oldest Greek manuscripts, thus proving that the addition at 1 John 5:7 is a corruption of the Bible text.
First John 5:7,8 should read: “For there are three witness bearers: the spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.”
What this is saying is water was a witness bearer because when Jesus was baptized in water, God himself expressed His approval of him as His Son. (Matthew 3:17) Jesus’ blood, or life given as “a corresponding ransom for all,” also showed that Jesus is God’s Son! (1 Timothy 2:5,6) And the Holy Spirit testified that Jesus is the Son of God when it descended upon him at his baptism, enabling him to go “through the land doing good and healing all those oppressed by the Devil.” (Acts 10:38)

yes ,because, it's the father bearing witness to the works of his son, jesus told his disciples in st,John 14,chap, verse, 19,yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more(physically, but ye see me, because I live, ye shall live also, he knew he was going back to the father, but was assuring them, that they wouldn't be left, alone, verses 20,thru21,in verse 22 Judas, not iscariot, wanted to know since he was leaving how he would manifest himself to them, and not unto the world.make hisself known, jesus told him in verse, 23,if a man love me, he would keep his words, and my father will love him, and we will come unto him and make our abode with him, in verse 15 ,he had told them, if you love me keep my, and l will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter(one who would be there after he left, that he may abide with you forever, he told them in verse 26,but the comforter, which is the holy ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things back to your remembrance (what he had taught them, whatsoever l have said unto you, the father himself is the teacher, also of the works his son taught, l am a witness, because jesus has revealed to me who the father is, he tells us in Luke, 10,chap,22,verse, all things are delivered unto me of my father and no man knoweth who the son is but the father, and who the father is but the son and he to whom the son will reveal him,1st John, 5chap,verses 9thru 11,if we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater, for this is the witness of God, which he hath testified of his son, he that believeth hath the witness in himself, he that believeth not God hath made him a liar and he believeth not the record that God gave of his son, and this is the record that God hath given us eternal life and this life is in his son, so yes his word is truth, because it was taught to them by my father, through the eternal spirit, after jesus left, and the father had them to record those works for those who repented to follow jesus, today.

Unfortunately, you forgot to mention that most if not all of the early Church fathers stated that Mark 16:9-20 was accurate! :)

Mark probably added this portion of Scripture latter on. It actually shows a lack of faith in the apostles who would not believe that Christ had risen. Mark was chronicalling the lack of faith in the APOSTLES OF CHRIST! He was telling on them as he himself went through a season of unfaithfulness. Jesus rebukes these same apostles for their lack of belief. Therefore the five miraculous signs were signs of an Apostle of Christ. See 2 Cor. 12:12. To think that these signs are to be done by all believers is ludicrous. It is this passage of scripture that the pseudo believers of Matt. 7:21-23 are referencing. So if these signs are being done today it is a false claim. These are the signs of pseudo believers not real Christians.

I have experienced casting out demons, speaking in tongues, layed my hands on the sick and they recovered, been accidentally food poisoned but survived by claiming this verse. Are you saying I'm a pseudo christian? The picking up of snakes is never to be done intentionally, that is putting the Lord to the test. Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake in Malta but survived, a fulfillment of Christ's promised in Mark 16-17-18.
