- In this episode, JJR recreates a double chocolate chess board cake he made for a secret celebrity on the set of the TV show Dynasty. This chocolate cake is filled with American-style chocolate buttercream and covered in an edible chessboard made of fondant. As a special bonus, Brandon also tries to make a chess-themed cake... decide for yourself how it turned out!

YBD American Chocolate Buttercream
This recipe makes enough to fill and ice one ten inch cake
What you need.....
1 and 1/2 lbs. unsalted butter (room temperature)
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (sifted)
1 and 1/2 cups confectioners sugar (sifted)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. salt
How to make this.....
Place all ingredients in a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment.
Mix on low until fully incorporated.
Turn to medium high speed and mix. until light and fluffy.

com has produced worldwide attention with a student base spanning the globe.
In 2015 Joshua was named one of the top ten cake designers in North America by
Dessert Professional Magazine, as well as Johnson and Wales University’s
Distinguished Visiting Chef. His name in the business and success in the field has
also prompted Joshua to be asked to judge cake shows and baking competitions
from the Austin Cake show, Viking Cooking School, Share Our Strength, Top Chef
Jr. and Nailed It (Netflix). Joshua hosted the NBC RUclips show Man About
Cake. He currently works as a corporate pastry chef for Irca in Atlanta and hosts You’ve Been Desserted.

That cake decoration makes the Star Trek 3D Chess look so passe 😀😂😂. Oh JJR have you done the melting clocks on a cake like the ones in the Salvador Dali painting? Something similar would look so cool.

About a year ago, I tested about a dozen different chocolate cake recipes (from all different places) to try find the best one, with about 20 taste testers, and yours was by far the best one! Honestly it is such an amazing cake, I make it all the time. I have made one minor tweak to it; I boil the water and bloom the cocoa powder in the boiling water. Just makes the chocolate a bit more chocolatey (as confirmed in blind taste tests). So flour, salt baking powder in one bowl. Milk, vinegar and vanilla in another. Boiling water, cocoa powder and instant coffee together, then combine the same way. It is a minor difference, but not much more work.
