    got this thing together with a splitted one for my ~ 200W 2.1 system. did build it with some high end high and mid range speakers and a 150W RMS Kevlar Subwoofer ... at just 1/5 of bass my neighbors going berserk on me. system in total cost me around 120$ (100$ for speakers, 20$ for the 2.1 amp). and BTW I got some high end system from Logitech and Bose, both around 200-300$ but my self made system is still my favorite one. only minus is that its slightly hissing when no audio is plugged in. but that's the only thing

    Did some tests on a TPA3116D2 sub amp. 2 ohm non inductive load 24 volts supply they will do just 100 watts at around 1% THD. Problem is the inductors on most of these Chinese amps just aren't up to the task well among other things. The TPA3116D2 chip itself can do the business if you can find a decent board. The way the batteries in this test were wired together would have caused a voltage drop, I mean stuffing wires in holes is not really a good connection.

      I agree, perfect little amps for home made boomboxes or even for retrofitting into old boomboxes. Again, main issue is 24 volts, but you could get by with 12 volts if you don't need as much power. Pretty cool they can handle such a wide range of input voltages

    Another great video! Thank you for testing such a wide variety of amplifiers. The ratings on these amps are based on the heat they dissipate -- not the power they produce. If you can squeeze 50% of the rated power out of these then you have a quality amp.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +8

      It sure appears that way by the specs of the chips, but the sellers are advertising them in a way that would make the consumer think these are the actual wattage output. Either way, now we know the truth

    The input limit reaches 3v same as the tpa3118 full range mono.
    Phones or rca's cant fully drive it even if it is at the max voltage of 26v.
    Unless your stereo can push more than 500mv on plugs.
    I have one tpa3116d2 full range stereo amplifier with signal booster that I modified to no hizz, for my homemade Bluetooth speaker with a dewalt battery and Bluetooth module and a dc-dc voltage booster 12-26V.
    Also I replaced my Yamaha amplifier with 2 TPA3118 mono block boards dc-dc voltage booster 12-24V driving 2 shelf book speakers sharp CP-C3900 150Wrms and they thump... Happy with both systems.

    Yo BigD, nice video as usual, hope you'll get around to doing some more cheap stuff videos. It's great seeing the cheap stuff getting so close to rated power. Someone asked about running it on batteries, I got something like that going in a salvaged parts project, but while it makes a lot of noise, its quality is laughable, all reused broken parts. I would make a video but I higly doubt anyone would be interested. You said something about retiring in a comment response, are you that old? you don't seem like it, maybe you were talking about the later future and I misunderstood. Given that "TDA" is a common prefix on other amplifier ICs, it's likely that "TDA3116" refers to the actual IC (as indicated on the silkscreen on the PCB), and TPA3116 refers to the whole module (or may have been a misprint.)

    • @pizzablender
      @pizzablender 4 года назад

      Probably just a mistake. TDA is a common series. I would easily mix up Chinese characters when I had to put them on a board. I suppose that happened here as well.

    That fuzziness near the peaks on 2 Ohms, is the result of current limit, and core saturation of the 22 uH inductors. you're peaking about 12.5 amps on inductors rated for 10 amps, and I don't even know what the peak current limit is on the TPA3116D2 chip is. I can't seem to download the data sheet on that device. The closest I can get, is that the amp requires a 3.2 Ohm load, with 26 volts, to achieve 100 watts RMS, without clipping. That would put you right at the current limit rating, and, high enough voltage to get that wattage without clipping. Too low impedance, current clip. Too high impedance, just won't draw the necessary current without voltage clipping.(current clipping looks ugly on the oscilloscope)

  • @nukedathlonman
    @nukedathlonman 7 лет назад +1

    Class D, 94W into 2 ohms with 6.5 amp draw - so a quick calc: 24V x 6.5a = 156W. Not quite class D efficient eh? Seems little better then the average ebay amp though, esp at $12.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +2

      The 94W measurement was dynamic though. The certified test 2 ohms was 25v x 4a = 100W...measured 85W, so 85% efficient

    • @nukedathlonman
      @nukedathlonman 7 лет назад

      BigDWiz Okay, a lot more effecient then I thought.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +1

      The dynamic tests are tough to get accurate current pulls. The new Fluke clamp meter I got has an "inrush" mode which averages the very fast peaks and all I can say is seeing 6.5a or more pulled from this amp would be a rarity.

    • @nukedathlonman
      @nukedathlonman 7 лет назад +1

      Your very right that it's hard to really measure those spikes. But the cert test does tell the story efficiency. Hmm, think it's possible that the 100W rating is total power draw as opposed to power out?

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +1

      That would be a strange way to rate, but seems to be the case. The spec sheet I found was not detailed on the wattage output or distortion in any detail at all. I must say, they are getting better on ratings though. The amps I tested years ago said "500 watts" and put out less than 20 watts...

I've noticed the BT models have noise issues. I guess it should be expected for a $15 amp rated 50x2 and 100x1 with built-in Bluetooth module! I'm going to probably compare the similar amps, will test them all, but most likely not individual videos. I guess it really depends on the popularity of the videos and how many people want to see these amps.

    do they make a bigger or more expensive board ?

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +2

      Yes, there are 2.1 versions, 120x2, 210x2 and even 500 and 600x1 boards. But the bigger the board, the bigger power supply required (and high voltage also). You will spend more on the power supply than the board in some cases

      I was considering using one of the old Jensen first generation 4400 amps as a power supply (since the power supply is separate from the amp board with only 4 wires connecting them), and using whatever board was voltage compatible with the output (+28/-28 volts).
      it would have to do better than the original TIP 35/36 setup they originally had or it wouldn't be worth the effort.

    • @mazda2284

      that is a GREAT idea ! i have a couple old jensen's with dual board also .

    • @wal
      @wal  7 лет назад +3

      This particular model has a low-pass filter and is designed for low frequency speakers only. There are several other models including 50x2 models that would work great for the two 6.5's (and the amp is full range)

    I have the Nobsound NS-08G TPA3116 2.1 amp its a much different build to this amp and id say it quite powerful as im using 2 Q acoustics 15-75w speakers and one sony subwoofer from a 5.1 system and that's rated for 130w rms and this amps really uses all of the subwoofers potential at 24V At 5amps so much so I can bottom out the subwoofer quite easily without even maxing out the amp especially using a tuned equalizer this with the subwoofer volume set to 40% on the amp also and around 45% master volume power and the speakers gets used quite well also can max out these speakers without any distortion.

    Can I use a similar amp like that to put in a smart speaker that stopped working? It's already wired for a battery pack and 18v plug in power. An Altec Lansing Stream X speaker... it just stopped working one day. I figured maybe just wire one of those up to the speakers and battery pack and power input from the cord and it should work??? I'd like to find one with Bluetooth and about 30 Watt

    I don't think it particularly matters if this chip will actually reach the specified power at 10% THD, because 10% THD is so distorted, nobody would want to listen to it anyway.

      +Dragosh Remus hello sir! Yes, that power supply should suffice, although it may give run out of steam when pushed to its limits. Make sure that 24 volt power supply really puts out 5 amps as some are overrated. I will check this amp again and measure current pull and let you know for sure
