Polishing with steel wool between coats, and after final coat makes a huge difference. Evens out the finish and makes the polished surface look buttery smooth.
Thanks for watching! I've had good success buffing with steel wool in between coats.
Check out my Perma Blue review!

Steel wool has OIL IN IT to keep it from rusting. Clear it with ACETONE before introducing it to projects like this.
I REALLY like this finish! Looks great. You did a tremendous job on this wrench! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Wayne! I like most things polished and shiny, but this is an option to keep in mind.
Always great to see how you handle a restoration. Nice job. Thank You
Thanks! I have another cold blue product review planned for 2023!
Awesome tutorial! The bluing came out nice... I too was at that Pa. Cabelas! The taxidermy is amazing. 😃👍
Thanks ScoutCrafter! We try to make a trip to that Cabela's once or twice a year.
Thanks for the great instructions. Great to have before I try so I can see if I am heading in the right direction.
Thanks John! The bluing is a good option to have up your sleeve.
Simple videos like this really work thanks
Thanks you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video man, I quite like the looks of blued steel. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks 2/3! The bluing is a good change of pace from the usual polished steel.
Great tutorial Magdad. I'm getting ready to start restoration on a Riverside Arms single shot 12 gauge that belonged to my great grandfather, my grandfather, my dad and now me. She's in rough shape and hasn't been fired in over 40 years.
Sounds like a challenging project! I'd be interested in seeing some photos! 357mdad@gmail.com
I'll send them when i do the restoration.
Thanks, you definately give me a good idea of what to expect.
I'm glad my video was helpful!
THANK YOU...for sharing. Like the bluing came out nice.
Thanks! Cold blue is a finish option to keep in mind!
Great video. Glad Scoutcrafter sent me here. Lots of great videos to catch up on. Lucky I am retired and can binge watch.
Thanks 901ronnie! ScouCrafter is the man!
I like using this stuff on tools I restore or make. I find using steel wool before the first coat and then after each application works best. I have rivet sets I did about 20 years ago that have been used hard, not given any special treatment whatsover, that are still black and not rusty. The paste can be easier to use on some things but the liquid is what I have used for decades. Interestingly, I have never tried it on a firearm!
Thanks for the tips! The Super Blue is a good finish option!

I have a video "some old wrenches I found" showing my results. I was experimenting with acid versus electrolosys rust removal so some look more brown. Since then I have done a couple of old Stillson pipe wrenches and had better luck bead blasting them. The bluing was more even. I still steel wooled before and after (OOOO).

I just saw that. Thankyou! I don't put out videos very often.
Doing my first firearm right now. It's looking amazing.
This is a great review! I did expect the finish to be different, darker. The bass pro shops are fun aren't they!!
Thanks Alex! We try to make a trip out to the Cabela's once or twice a year.
Requires multiple applications with buffing in between to reach darker colors. Wipe with ACETONE between buffing's/coats.
"PERFECTLY"! put together video and narration...
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Cute little wrench and a nice job👍🏻
Thanks TD!
That little wrench got more love than a middle child.
Every old tool need some love!
Ah, the little wrench that could. Oops, squeezed it a little too much. S#*t. Something I would do. I seem to keep fixing things til they're broke. Nice save by filing it back to specs. I would not have thought of that. Oh, no worries here vaping the Birchwood, I'm still working my way up to Tide Pods.
The tide pod thing was crazy!
Nice, i have the paste blue. On older, higher quality tools it works great. The new alloys sometimes get a blotchy inconsistent look. Nice review....flitz needs to make a cold blu 😂😂😂👍👍👍
Thanks Joe! I've had problems with getting a consistent finish on larger objects.
Thanks mate. I just got some of this stuff to blue up some old King Dick spanners I have. If it works out, I will use it on a lot more stuff. I feel more confident after your video
Thanks for watching! I've got a video on a King Dick that I blued:

Great video. Keep in mind that Super Blue has no rust or corrosion properties. You can use Mark Lee's Brown Express #2 or Plum Brown to cause a browning to start the rust process to best protect it.

Great video.. Good field testing project . Thanks 💯 Sir .
Thanks Anthony!
@@357magdad You very welcome.
Turned out great!!
Thanks WM3!
Nice review and looks good!
Thanks Todd!
I sure have had some fun using this stuff..There are tools that I do not want a polish finish on
I've had good luck with the Super Blue! I agree - it is a good alternative to high polish.
Another good bluing video!
Thanks Mike!
It would / could be cool to blue a polished steel 1911 in a “dazzle” camouflage like a WWII ship.
That would look cool!
I keep forgetting to tell you, i like your narrating voice :)
Thanks! My daughter makes fun of my voice overs!
Very enjoyable.
Thanks! Check out my bluing playlist:

I have a few questions. Also open to suggestions. First question: after bluing and curing in oil. Is is safe to handle? Second question, does it work on Tungsten? I was hoping to blu my dart barrels. Throwing darts. 🎯 if this would work let me know. Or if a suggestion. Darts are like baseball gloves. One would think just buy a new set. My darts cost about 175 after some minor changes. It makes a difference. But I prefer the dark black look over bright.
Thanks for watching! Yes - the blued parts can be handled. No- the bluing solution only works on ferrous metals.
Check out this video on darkening tungsten fishing weights:

It takes several coats to get a deep blue finish . 4 or 5 coats minimum .
4:51 Good content. Will definitely come back for the next video. When is it coming out? Thumbs up 👍
Thanks Ethan! I try to get a video out every Friday. I'm skipping this Friday because I'm headed to the Jacktown engine show Saturday morning. My haul from the show will hopefully be the next video!
Thanks much trying to find the right finish for my current vise resto this is in the running.
Thanks for watching! I'd love to see photos of your project! 357mdad@gmail.com
@@357magdad wow that so nice of you. Another question I have about the bluing is how polished do the metals need to be in order to be properly blued out? like I have another advice that's already done being restored and I want to keep the metal look it's got just the plain metal look after being thoroughly wire wheeled on my grinder. If I wanted to Blue this out what I need to polish it to high gloss or can I just apply the blowing compound the way that I have it now?
@@mattg6262 I think you can cold blue roughly finished metal.
I've tried this stuff with several of my restorations, but gave up on it because it isn't durable. It either wears off or scratches off, plus I couldn't get an even finish even after multiple applications.
Thanks for watching John! I agree, it's not a very durable coating. I plan to experiment with rust bluing soon. It's supposed to be more durable and corrosion resistant.
@@357magdad Can't wait! I subbed after Scoutcrafter recommended you. I like the variety of restorations you're trying. I'm the same way- tools, furniture, toys, fans.....anything interesting. Love your vids.
Thanks for sharing. What you suggest for a good rustrepellent finishing on normal steel? I have to protect a metal lever that is halfway in the gearbox (well protected from weather) and halfway out the gearbox, I can't paint it because it is possible that some solvent or transmission fluid could go on it. The previous lever is at a good rist point and the car is 10 years old. I'll replace that part but want the new one to resist. Thank you.
Stay well.
I think you could make some very nice shades out of contact lenses by applying a drop of Super Blue to them. You could also vary the shading by how many coats applied 😎 Undoubtedly I will be getting an email from Safety Sally very soon. 😁😁
LOL
I bet it's good on toast or an English muffin as well.
I did find this presentation helpful. Thank you.
I see it is about $18. USD on Amazon. Not bad..., seem like 3oz. can go a long way.
I think I paid about $8 at Cabelas.
I apologize if its covered in the comments but dont have the time to read them all. What do you think is the best bluing out there? Just trying to save time and money by trying out diff products. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for watching! I've only used two and since the other one is no longer sold, I would vote for Super Blue! I've used it on several projects now and have had good success.
Magdad Mighty Muscle...does that come in bottles or jars? Great demo of the bluing. Now I know!
Chewable tablets! lol Thanks Lee!
Good review.
Thanks for watching! You might be interested in my Perma Blue video:
ruclips.net/video/62gOhxEi-t8/видео.html
I think this was an alloy as I have gotten even deeper darker blued results using Perma Blue on a Makarov touch up. Pretty good though. You made that little 50 cent wrench into a $20 Snap On wrench. No. If it was Snap On it would be made out of Gold under the Chrome. LOL!
I have used the Super Blue on several projects now, and the darkness does seem to vary depending on the metal.
Very helpful. Thanks. Where can I get Magdad muscle power, seems like it would be useful. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Tony! I should do a Magdad muscle power workout video!
It. Came out nice if the blue don't stay on just go with high polish steel
Thanks Larry! The bluing is just one more trick in the tool bag!
It’s a good idea to use 0000 fine wire wool when first applying the liquid….it ensures an even coat and helps the liquid to penetrate the surface where there are any imperfections…
Good stuff, but expensive….
Thanks for watching John! Some steel wool has oil in it to keep it from rusting. I think the oil may interfere with the bluing.
Do you know if a satin clearcoat can be applied over this product? I use it for fabricated ornamental brackets and pieces.
I have not tried it. I bet it would work if you degreased right before applying the clear coat.
Will it work in a non-mirror polished stainless pistol barrel made from heat treated 416 Stainless Steel?
Thanks for watching! My understanding is that the cold blue solutions only work on carbon steel.
Dang it, I was all set to blue my contact lenses until you warned me against it...
Magdad - The Voice of Reason
At 3:42, you say "don't soak your contacts" in the blueing solution. Dang- I was going to do that so my eyes would appear a nice steely blue, but now I can't.
I like to sneak in a little magdad humor here and there....
would heating the metal offer any extra protection. If not, what can I do to get these cosmetics with added protection to the metal. I am considering this for bluing a gun barrel.
Rust bluing is the most corrosion resistant type of bluing but it is more complicated than cold bluing.
It helps the solution do its job. Not necessarily more "protection" but might have a deeper more even finish (after several coats).
Is all this stuff does turn the metal a different color?
Is there any other benefit?
Thanks for watching! Cold bluing is mostly for looks.
Nice review but I like all my old tools in the original color, most are silver.
Thanks Michael! The blued finish is just another option to experiment with.
Great job. The only downside to this is that bottle of blueing looks like a bottle of antacid from Rite Aid. The logo is very similar to Rite Aid's logo. Seems like they could have put a bigger warning on the label..
Thanks Wire! You'd only mistake it for antacid once!
@@357magdad You got that right. LOL
Super Blue...my go-to...bluing
I have had pretty good luck with Super Blue. Perma Blue seems like it works well too.
Birchwood Casey is good stuff been around for years.
Matches most bluing on different firearms.
I've had good results with both Super Blue and Perma Blue.
@@357magdad can we just touch up with super blue liquid for firearms barrel?
@@materazipelates Yes, it can be used for touch ups.
Great review. The little wrench looks great. Lol don't vape... 👍
magdad says "don't vape kids!" lol
Good video 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Frank!
Would this work on brass? I have some brass bells that I want to darken.
No. This stuff only works on steel
Those lines are from casting, not forging. It would have been nice to see how the bluing work on unpolished steel as well.
Splitting hairs, aren't we?
We want to see Mrs. 357Magdad before and after Flitzing!

Thanks! I'm planning to do a Perma Blue review soon!
@@357magdad I'm using the perma blue now and it's just not cutting it coating after coating. Just not dark enough for what I want.
@@deathlarsen7502 I'm gonna try to compare the two on the same item.

What grade did you use on the sanding belt
I think I started at 120 and worked my way down to 400.
You also can pick up the bluing solution at Walmart. I've messed around with it a little, but haven't gotten great results. I blued an old ball pein hammer and let it sit overnight in wd-40, and I began having rusting issues with it.
Cold bluing is just for looks. It has no protective qualities. I've found that you have to thoroughly rinse in water then dry before soaking in oil.
Professional shops "Cure" or soak in just kerosene for 24 hours after this type of work.
as this product available in pakistan, peshawar
You get a much better and more even and darker finish if you lightly steel wool in between coats.
Thanks for the tip.
Heating the metal first before you apply super blue also helps
I wonna Blue all sorts of stuff now. How bout putters? (golf clubs)
As long as they are steel.
What is the point of the 24hr oil soaking?
I think the oil sort of "cures" the finish.
Where can i buy it. Please provide the link. Thanks
I would recommend you check Amazon or ebay. Cabela's carries it also.
@@357magdad thanks
Nice..!
Thanks you! I've had good results with the Super Blue on several projects!
357magdad ive been looking for a way to restore some tools like a pipe wrench I have. Not that many gun shops here tho 😂(europe)
@@becomematrix I think there are similar blackening solutions used for stained glass - there might be one that would work on steel.
Will this work on watch screws?
The cold blue solutions are designed to work on plain carbon steel. As long as the screws aren't stainless steel or plated, it should work.
He says he can't help himself but wait until he discovers polishing wheels that can fit on a regular bench grinder, just like his wire wheel, then he will have two or three additional bench grinders each setup so that one side is slightly coarser polishing wheel than the other and he will have four or six polishing discs lined up across the bench. Ask me how I know!
Thanks for watching! I have one bench grinder for wire wheels and one for the fiber wheels. The Flitz polish seems to do better with a slower speed wheel, so I usually use my Dremel on low or a buffing wheel in my hand drill.
I tried vaping it i cant recommed trying it thou
Looks like good stuff. Would it be good to prevent rust. Rust is the biggest enemy in my KY basement! ...Newk from Kentucky
Cold bluing has no protective qualities.
First clue, do not store guns in damp basements!
It seems nice and black in some videos. And other its blue.. .
Thanks for watching! In my experience the color gets darker with each application, but it is always shades of black.
