- With the Arc of Attrition just around the corner, we thought we'd make this video to try and settle any nerves that runners might be having with the build up to race day.
Having run the race 4 times myself I've made many mistakes along the way and thought it would be a good idea to pass on some of the experiences I've had and the things I've learnt racing in the Arc of Attrition. Really hope you find this useful and your training's gone well, now make sure you keep yourself fit and healthy and we'll see you on the start line of this iconic winter ultra!

Hi Loyd, new to the channel, found you whilst looking into the Arc race, really love the content and now busily binge watching the back catalogue, congratulations on some epic adventures and race results. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to what the future holds on the channel, saw you filming whilst watching the live feeds over the weekend and now can't wait for this years Arc video to drop, all the very best for 2020 racing.
Hi Jon

Helpful video! I like your kind way. This is how all runners should be. I also like so much your background wall, simple, smart and beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching 👍🏻
Runners should always look after each other especially in a tough race like this! 😀
Thanks for your support 👍🏻
Great documentary of an awesome race - very well filmed and put together. So great to see such human endeavour to run 100 miles on such terrain and conditions.
Thanks Peter, really gkad you enjoyed the video 👍
It's an incredible race on an epic route! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Thanks alot thats were so helpful
Really glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching 🙏😊
No races at the moment, but always a great catch up with a gear or kit video from you, Loyd. And this is great as it's motivational for when we can get out there again but I also expect the ARC runners appreciated it too!
Cheers Paul, I'm glad you found it motivational 👍
Hopefully we'll be out racing soon, I'll be on the start line of the AoA next year camera in hand 🏃🎥
@@Run4Adventure wow! awesome! (mad, but awesome!)
@@DartmoorPaul
I'm looking forward to it Paul 👍
It's an amazing race with an incredible atmosphere 🏃😊
Really enjoyed this and found it very useful. Time may be short now but how about something similar on crewing a race? I know my crew would appreciate it!
Hi Gill
Thanks for watching and I’m really happy you found it helpful 👍🏻😀
A crewing video would be good you’re right. It’s a tough race to crew that’s for sure, I’ve done it and I personally think it’s easier to run the race than crew it!! 😂😂😂Unfortunately not really enough time to get one filmed and edited! Hope everything goes well in the race a we’ll see you on the start line 😀
Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel to keep up to date with future content 🎥👍🏻
Excellent video! Even doe i did know "everything" in the video I really enjoyed this and found it very useful.
I keep coming back and i have seen this video 10-15 times already. the way you present the tips makes me motivated to go out and run or just happy.
i´ll will race the TDS@UTMB next week and guess i will pack my salomon 12l almost like you presented :)
That's awesome Jimmie, really glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I was meant to be running the TDS at UTMB but I deferred my place fir next year. I will be out at UTMB all week so if you see me come and have a chat. Best of luck with the race 🏃♂️💪⛰️
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thanks Paul and thanks for watching the channel 👍🏻😀
I always carry buffs on me. they are so useful. the waterpoof jackets are wonderful but I end up soaked in sweat.
Great advice do you not have to carry a map as mandatory kit
Another super useful and informative video. I'm off to get myself a hand torch!
Thanks Andy 👍🏻
Awesome, it’s a really useful piece of kit to have out in the route! 🔦😀
Thanks for watching 😀
Torch ordered thanks :) This will be my 4th time but still get lost lol
No worries it’s definitely worth carrying one but make sure it’s bright and has a spot feature 👍🏻
Thanks for watching and good luck on the day 🏃💪🏻
Hi Loyd... delighted my Harrier waterproof jacket has arrived and I've noticed my huge mandatory kit I have to carry for the Snowdon Trail Marathon 2022... do you have a video coming up or and tips to get used to carrying that lot when I usually only carry a gel and a iPhone ??? Or are husky aloud ??? 😅 😂 🤣
The best thing to do Stephen is get your pack fully loaded with all your mandatory kit for the race and get out there running! I'd start with shorter runs first and build up the distance. Hope this helps and good luck with your training 🙏😊
Thank you for another fantastic video.
Just wondering what litre size your dry bag is?
Hi Matt
Thanks, really glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
The dry bag is a 5ltr bag and the brand is Sea to Summit, hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🎥😀
Run 4 Adventure thank you very much for the response.
I’ve got my first ultra in June (Pennine Barrier 50) and it’s really useful to get advice like this from people who’ve got actual experience 👍🏿
No problem anytime 👍🏻
Best of luck with your first ultra! Train well and you’ll love it 🏃💪🏻
Quick question:
Is there anything WARM you would wear OVER your race vest?
It was throwing it down last weekend on my trail run. I put my water proof on but was still cold and I thought, I would hate to have to stop in the rain, open my pack, put on a fleece and put the pack back on.
Any ideas?
Some waterproof running jackets actually designed to go over your race vest now Rich. I'm filming our waterproof running jacket buying guide tomorrow and I mention jackets that now fit over your vest as well as under 👍
11:48 No issues with stitching coming apart?
If not seems the perfect place for a waterproof.
I was going to put it over my head and into the stuff pocket on the back buy I have my 3rd full soft flask in there (unless there's anywhere else I can put it?)
If always put my waterproof jacket in the stuff pocket on the Salomon vests for years and had no issue with stitching coming apart. It does take a bit of practice and you do need flexible shoulders though Rich 😊

Appreciate the advice!
Great video, very useful, thanks mate! Do you use same sim card you use for your smart phone for this little phone? Thanks
Thanks really glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! 👍🏻
Yep all you need to do is pop your SIM card in and off you go 😀

@@Run4Adventure Thanks mate, subscribed. I liked your vlog from Slovenia as well and as a Slovenian totally agree that they shouldn't charge for the waterfalls 😀
Thanks for the Sub! 👍🏻
Really glad you enjoyed the Slovenia video especially when you come from there 😀
It’s a stunning country and we’ll definitely be going back, it was the highlight of the trip!
Is there anywhere you’d recommend going when we do go back??
Once again thanks for the support 🎥👍🏻
@@Run4Adventure Hi, sorry for the late reply, in Julian Alps around Bohinj you have many good mountain trails, Soca valley is stunning and if you wanna race in Slovenia, check Ultra trail Vipava valley, it's gonna be my first 100km ultra for me this May. They have 100miler as well
Hello.. you've got a few pairs of gloves in there.. but how do you find them, once your hands are already wet?
I've not had much luck so far with gloves, as no matter what ones i've had, trying to get them on to hands that are already a bit cold and wet, i've regularly had issues getting them on.. and in my past of long day trail winter walks up the hills in the Lake District, i've had occasions that have been quite worryingly dangerous of almost not being able to get a pair on... just wonder if you have the same issues with running gloves.. as i couldn't trust the gloves i've used in the past, if i start to do more running in the fells. cheers.
I've never really had a problem 🤔
It sounds like you've left it to long before you've got your gloves on?
This is why it's so important to listen to our bodies because they'll give us plenty of warning signs before any problems arise 😊
I really struggle with cold hands in the winter so glove are really important to me in the winter months and I always make sure they're on before I get to cold 👍
I was out filming on the AoA route from the nighttime recce video in glorious sunshine today so get ready for a video that you can actually see how stunning the route is, I don't think you'll be disappointed 👍😉
Run 4 Adventure must admit, it’s usually on occasions when everything feels a bit too hot for full gloves, so I’ve either had none on, or wanted to change from a pair of wet fingerless gloves, because the temp starts to drop.. the insides of a dry pair out of the bag are really grippy.. so can’t get my hands in without a struggle.. thinking of trying a pair of running mittens, so I don’t have put my fingers in finger holes when they’re wet.. I’ve heard they can feel a bit clammy warm, but worth a try 😬..
Thanks for the reply..👍🏼
Looking forward to the day time run along the AoA route 👍🏼
May I ask what torch you use? Thank you 😁
Hi Sarah
Thanks for watching the channel 👍🏻
If you have a look in the description I’ve left a link for the hand torch 😀

How do you keep your feet dry if really wet conditions? Spare socks? Goretex shoes or Waterproof socks? Cheers
Definitely not Gortex shoes or waterproof socks!! My feet get wet 😀
I do have a couple of spare pairs of socks and shoes with my crew and change when i can 👍🏻
There’s a few section in the race where you can keep your feet dry for a good 10 miles 😀
Run 4 Adventure - cool, many thanks
@@PaulCoatesTrailRunning Socks is always my number 1 thing with conditions like the Arc. Hope you are doing it in 2021. I will be. I totally with Loyd as always and definitely not waterproof or goretex shoes or socks. Use Gurney Goo or similar on feet before the race. Use socks that work but fast drying socks that drain and dont hold water like Drymax and so on. Then every big check point like Porthleven, Penzance etc more cream and new socks while you take on food. You lose about 5 mins of time but well worth it in my book.
AndyUltra - spare socks seems the best advice. Tried it on my last ultra and felt so nice with dry socks on. Cheers.
@@PaulCoatesTrailRunning Awesome mate. As always with Ultras it's all about trying and testing what works for you.
14:30 If you do carry 1.5 litres where do you put the 3rd flask?
I just put it in the big stuff pocket on the lower back of the vest. That way I can get to it and swap them over when needed, without taking the ack off 👍
@@Run4Adventure Thanks for that!
Wasnt sure if the netting and stitching would be robust enough but plenty have responded on Reddit saying they have had no problems.
@@richt3993 Never had a problem Rich 👍
