  • Turn your volume up! The first launch of the new Orion capsule on EFT-1 for NASA. The Delta IV Heavy is currently the largest rocket in the world. These videos and audio recordings were captured approx 3 miles away at the Press Viewing Area of the Causeway, section G. James you must make it to Florida to watch the new Boeing SLS Moon /Mars rockets first flight-test. My hope is by late 2021it will take to the sky. The SLS crew/cargo [max load ] configuration will have considerably more power than then Apollo-era Saturn V with upwards of 10,000,000 pounds of thrust.

    This is exactly what it sounds like from the causeway. That crackle and popping sound is not from cheap microphones. Great job! Most recordings have too much clipping from the high SPL's.
    This is cool to see. I worked on the construction of that launch pad in the early 2000's. Personally I think they should have man rated the Delta IV, we could have already had our ride to space if that decision was made.

      Chris Barth it's just Chuck Norris cooking popcorn

    • @pyrusrex2882
      @pyrusrex2882 5 лет назад +5

      I wish they would have man rated it. The problem is, they would have to do hundreds of modifications to the engine, tanks, and thrust structure. An engine that big is going to have some violent transients, and I guarantee it there were pilots in Orion on this flight they would have been shaken to death by pogo. The capsule is a lot hardier than the people inside it. Pogo isn't really an issue with uncrewed flights, it just expected, and it's too costly to eliminate on non man rated rockets, so they just kind of let it happen.

    There is nothing better than the sound of an all hydrogen/oxygen launch vehicle when you're in the acoustic mach cone looking right up the engine bells. God that sounds intimidating. Hypergolic, kerosene, and solid rockets just can't quite make that sharp metallic popping roar. I think it's because of the higher exhaust velocity. I imagine that's probably what the battle of the Somme sounded like.

    I love the sound of those sonic booms coming out of those nozzles. Nothing can top the Saturn V's Earth rattling sound, but the Space Shuttle, Delta IV Heavy, and Falcon IX Heavy come close, especially the Space Shuttle and those massive SRB's. I thought it was so cool when Apollo 11, I think, ascended through a thin cloud/haze layer, made a hole in that layer, and once it was above, you could see ripples in the cloud layer from the sonic booms coming out of those five huge Rocketdyne F-1's. They said the reinforced glass panels of the NASA launch control facility, of several inches in thickness, were rattling in their frames when the Saturn V's went up. They worried that the frames would fail and the window collapse in on their heads.

      +10inlong Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. 140,000 acres. Ninety percent undeveloped, pristine and undisturbed. I'm aware of this because I used to work there. I can assure you the birds are in fact befuddled (and not amused) by the launches, but like almost all wild animals confronted with crazy human activity, they adapt and pretty much get used to it.

    Well...now I have an excuse to get a new home theater system. Blew all speakers and the subwoofer. Totally worth it
