{TrueSound}™ The Real Sound of Falcon Heavy STP-2 Launch and Booster Landing with Triple Sonic Boom

- The historic first night launch of Falcon Heavy, launching the STP-2 payload from Kennedy Space Center as seen from the viewing area at the end of Route 401 at Port Canaveral. We were 13.0 miles (20.9 km) from launch pad 39A, and 6.0 miles (9.7 km) from the landing zones.
The camera shakes were not cut in order to keep the audio continuous. After side booster separation and the absolutely glorious boostback burn, there was a three-minute period of suspense as we waited to see them restart for the reentry burn. This was the only part cut from the video.
We'd like to say the much anticipated pair of triple sonic booms is well captured here. However, nothing can replicate the experience of being there in person and actually feeling the shock waves.
This was a new endeavor for capturing the real sound. We had two microphones set up in tiny coves near the water (to mitigate the sound of the crowd). When putting the video together, the audio from one mic (angled slightly to the left) was used for the left channel, and vice versa for the right channel. The audio levels were also brought down to reduce distortion as much as possible. Turn it up and enjoy!

For those hearing only four sonic booms in total, try listening at 0.75x speed. You should hear six because (1) there are always three from each booster and (2) there are six clear peaks in the waveforms.
I'm guessing all of the sounds were delayed about one minute, twenty six seconds?

We were the group of guys with a bunch of tripods, playing music from a bluetooth speaker in the hours before launch! The most noticeable thing we had was a white telescope on a giant tripod, you may have seen it if you were nearby!

@@conorm2524 Delays can happen for any reason, so if you can, plan to stay a day or two in case it scrubs. This launch was delayed by 2 hours due to a ground system problem. Luckily there was a 4 hour launch window, so they were able to get it off the ground in time.

Those booms at 6:09 are cool, sound is soooo much slower than light. The engines shut down before the sound reaches the camera

@@lovejago It's 1,125 feet/sec. Like I said, less than 1/4 mile/sec. Any variation due to temp, humidity or air pressure makes no real difference in it's comparison to the speed of light, practically speaking, as it's roughly 670 million mph.

He actually edited it. The real delay (I was there) was 50-60 seconds (roughly 5 seconds/mile and 10-12 miles distance) (As Juppe said). You're sitting there for quite some time after the engines have (visually) shut down before the sonic boom finally hits

My father and I stayed up all night and went to the beach to watch it. We live 60 miles south from the Cape, and the remaining sound from that rocket took approximately 5 minutes to reach us. Even though that sound was certainly *nothing* compared to the Cape Canaveral spectators' seats, it was still quite a spectacle to see on a perfectly clear night. ♥️🔥

@@danielwhyatt3278 Starship development is currently not doing so great, and SLS Block 1 is already ready to be put together in the VAB. All the components have been made/adapted. Nasa takes longer to make their crafts because they have a lower budget and are *much* more careful when selecting rockets to be produced for manned spaceflight.

@@jstoli996c4s Pretty much like it is at the Cape, at least as far as china cabinets and windows rattling. You can't really generate the sonic shocks, though, since in reality they are basically instantaneous, and you can't actually FEEL the shock hit you, like you would there. Those sound OK with a really good sub (Velodyne 15' servo sub, in my case), but not like they do in reality.
This had to have been way better than any fireworks show!! With the bass turned up.....just an inkling of what it must have been like to be there in person. Thanks for sharing!!

@@janm3531 I think it was just burning up more atmosphere than usual due to weather. Could be wrong
@@janm3531 the side boosers reignited their engines to redirect them back to the landing pads at the Cape. The terminology is "boostback burn." The atmosphere is very thin up there and the exhaust spreads out making for a great show!
@@janm3531 the 2 boosters turn around and fire their engines to head back to land. At that time their engines are pointed directly at the engines from the receding centre core, so the result is the 3 jets of gas collide and start glowing, forming these nebula like patterns
I got very lucky and happened across a lady who's brother worked in Launch Control for this mission. I was cleaning an airbnb house with a friend of mine, and the lady mentioned that the rocket was what brought them into town. My friend started talking before I could open my mouth to say anything and told her how much of a space fan I was. The lady told me to give her my name and number. I didn't actually expect a call back! I went out there with the people who built the satellites on board. I listened to them talk mostly. I don't know the math for this sort of thing yet. But for the first time in a long time, I felt like I actually fit in to the group. It was incredible!
I called my dad, and it was about 2:30am, I think. I told him, "Dad, you will never guess where I am, what I'm doing, and who I'm with!" Of course, being my dad, he could tell nothing was wrong, and knew the only other thing I could possibly be calling at that hour for would be a rocket. I filled him in quickly, then he got to listen in on the launch, my running commentary (have flip phone, so couldn't video chat or take photos,), and the landing. I can actually hear myself shouting, "Wow! Dad!" when the boosters separated with that fireworks show. I didn't realize that I sound like such a young kid there! If I didn't remember shouting it at that moment, I would've mistaken my voice for a ten year old's! Lol! I'm twenty one!

The Moon that night over the Delta launchpad was unreal!! It looked like a scene out of a scifi movie!! It was a wonderful night, and I thank everyone who made it possible for me to go out there, and the group that let me tag along!

I live about 25 miles south of the cape and the sonic booms knocked pictures off my wall it’s was insane! Just moved back to Florida a few months ago and this was the first launch I’ve seen.

People would leave theaters just after the credits rolls. Fast forward 10 years and people would stick until the end just to see the end credits. And just like SpaceX people stick around to see the landing. never would've imagine that landing is as much as exciting as the launch. What a great time to be alive!
Seeing the boosters return to Earth was the best part of this experience! It's absolutely incredible what SpaceX is accomplishing!
In 2003 my wife and I travelled from the other side of the world to watch the night launch of the Opportunity Mars Rover. Watching your excellent presentation is giving me a trip down memory lane.

Coupled with the fact you're putting extra effort into recording stereo sound means the only thing I'm missing is the feeling of the air against my chest... thanks to my subwoofer and your recording quality I still get a taste of that from home.

I watched this launch from my backyard in Crystal River which is about 100 miles west of the Cape. Even at this distance it was an extremely impressive thing to watch. However, the most impressive thing was that the sonic booms managed to travel all the way across 100 miles of the state and be heard and felt over here. Although subdued the separate booms turned into low roar that went on for about a minute. It did manage to shake the windows a bit as well. That Falcon Heavy is a very powerful machine!!

From an article -“[The] first boom is from the aft end (engines),” said John Taylor, SpaceX’s Communications Director. “[The] second boom is from the landing legs at the widest point going up the side of the rocket. [The] third boom is from the fins near the forward end.”
If you try to listen at 0.25X, it's very clear.
Unbelievable sound and video quality! I was on 401 that night and watching this on a hifi sound system with a good sub is extremely close to being there as far as the sound goes. Awesome!

Quite a few people are attempting to calculate the distance from the sound delay, but they are doing so with many errors. Here's the attempted math from one of our previous replies:
Going back to the footage and measuring with Sony Vegas, the exact time between the first light of ignition and the initial sound (not the loud part, just the very beginning) is 57.04 seconds. Since the speed of sound varies with temperature (and the temperature varies since the sound is traveling to us over land and water), it's difficult to use an exact number...
Assuming 77°F (25°C) and 90% humidity (it was much less at our location), the speed of sound is 347.8 m/s.

This yields a distance of only 19.8 km (12.3 mi), contrasting sharply with the Google Earth distance of 20.9 km (13.0 mi). If we assume 86°F (30°C) this goes up to 20.0 km (12.4), which still falls short of the measured distance.
What blew my mind is how you heard the sonic Booms after the boosters landing powerful booms from the two boosters. The fact that they were landed before i heard it though was interesting considering i was near the landing pad.

Unfortunately, RUclips audio isn't usually considered quality. If you could post a link to your downloadable 24bit audio, that would be better.
I find it likely, that there is already plenty of "sound" being generated in the startup process without emitting light, thus leading to an delay between sound and light generation/emission.

Is there a version with the audio resync'd to the video? In other words, with the sound vs light delay removed as if you were right next to the pad.

This is problematic because the audio itself "sounds" like a distant rocket launch. There's no way around that without actually recording audio from close up.
@@ilikerio That's part of what would make it so interesting, imo. Just seeing the visual that's causing the (amazing) sound you're hearing would add to the experience. Although, there is something to be said for the anticipation you get in this video...

@@kpkndusa Thank you! While it was sitting on the pad before launch, the heat haze was too much to get a clear shot even through a 495mm telescope. Much less noticeable here since the max zoom was only 250mm.

Open-back is far more accurate and can provide 100000x more real sound, if you have high end gear to power it. Noise cancelling dumbs down the sound and does not have spacial sound properties. Good for movies and terrible for literally anything else. Get yourself good open-back cans.
EVOLICIOUS if you have good noice cancelend Headphones it feels even more realistic cause they wel rumble a lot so it literaly vibraties and suround sound is better

The full experience can never be replicated, but listening to this at full volume is the closest you can get to the real thing!

It would be cool to re sync the sound so from our perspective sound and video would be like one was standing at ground zero.
I completely and utterly disagree! Every time that's done, whether it's a news show, movie, TV show, documentary, etc. it pissed me off! Sound is slower than light, that's just reality. When the noise isn't delayed it just screams fake to me.
There is a video from years ago of a manufacturing plant (rocket fuel?) on fire and exploding, it's isolated off in the desert and it's being videoed from a nearby hilltop ('nearby' being miles away). When the plant explodes you can see the shockwave expanding out in a circle, as it's closing in on the camera it goes out of sight for a second then "boom!" The delay in the sound reaching the camera is part of what makes the video so great.
Quite a few people suggest this, but it's simply not realistic...

I calculated, you were 17/18 km from Falcon Heavy.
Google Earth measures 20.9 km to the pad. Attempting to account for temperature and humidity, the closest the math gets is 20 km.
