- In this video, I once again cover a familiar topic while servicing a Harman Kardon 430 receiver, that of which is servicing the controls. Although I cover this topic now and then, it bears repeating, especially because (A) it's such a routine / needed part of serving multi-decade old receivers, amps etc., and, not everyone will find this topic I covered in past videos. So again, I'll bring it up periodically.

I have a 430 & 730 . Both were recapped. Both sound fan freaking tastic 😮😊
Hello there, good to hear you're lovin' the sound quality of your recapped equipment. Keep enjoying the tunes, my best to you :-)
Good advice. I just made a few holes like you did.
If anyone else wants to do it, be careful. Do it very slowly, removing as much dust as possible with compressed air.
When you feel some resistance, do it more slowly with the top of the switch (PCB) towards the ground to avoid dust getting into the switch and blocking it. When you have gone through the PCB (just after), continue to turn the drill slowly (in the opposite direction) and remove it.
have you done an hk 930? you need to tape up the tuning string and remove 1 pully and all screws on 1 side of the face and all but one one the other side just so you can pry the face out far enough so that there is enough room to barely squeek the tone board past the knee in the chassis. it wasn't overly difficult but i came up with a few colorful phrases for future use. good times! rock n roll🤘
Hello Joseph, I don't recollect working on a 930, but the "song and dance" you had to go through with it it sure doesn't surprise me. I've had plenty of them that required "balancing on one leg while rubbing my belly, patting the top of my head and of course touching my forehead with my tongue, so, I definitely know where you're coming from. Keep on keeping on ;-)
Seems like you’re playing with dynamite with a candle as light source. Just to get a little cleaner into a switch. Is the juice worth the squeeze?
Hello there, that's an interesting way of putting things. I'll start with the dynamite and candle light aspect of things. If you're implying that it appears to be a risky process, I would say it depends on the mere mortal performing the work. As I mentioned in this video (and others), there are indeed "things" one should be aware of while performing this type of service and beyond. As far as "flame to dynamite" damage occurring, I can't see what that would be, unless I fall over dead at the bench and take the piece of equipment for a face dive onto the concrete floor ;-). As far as going through the measures seen in this video to "get a little cleaner into a switch", that's a good point you bring up. Again, some units are going to allow for quick and easy unobstructed access into the various controls, and others will not. In addition, it's a good practice to thoroughly flush (fill the switch / pot cavity), with cleaner while "rigorously" exercising the control etc., etc. And lastly, "is the juice worth the squeeze"? If I didn't charge enough for that level of service, NO, it wouldn't be. Is it worth it to the customer? well, I educate them on the process and let them decide if it's what they want. Thank you for chiming in, have a good day, my best to ya 🙂
@@retroelectrotech thanks for that! A nice chuckle on a Sunday morning. And I mean that with no malice. You have a good day as well! ☺️
