I got back into bass fishing after a 20 year gap. What i fell back in love with was the simplicity of taking a small bit of tackle, one or two rods down a creek in a kayak. Tech like that stains the real fun in discovery.

My uncle recently introduced me to Live Scope crappie fishing this past fall in East TN. After experiencing it myself, I understand why some people scoff at it for the video-game-like nature when they see it in videos, but in practice it still requires angling skill, boat discipline, and understanding of structure to use effectively.
As it applies to competitive fishing, I think a page need be taken from competitive shooting, with different tournaments or divisions that don't allow for any imaging at all, or limited to GPS only.
Speaking just about crappie on open water and any imaging tech, I think it makes the whole process a lot more approachable and accessible; we were able to use live scope on known structure points to find which spots were holding fish, but we still had to find and chart those points in the first place. Once anchored, I could easily fish off the other end of the boat without imaging, allowing more novice people on the boat to use the screen real time. Watching the live imaging while jigging also makes it very easy for inexperienced people to learn about what's going on underwater as well with both the fish and their , shortening the learning curve for mental visualization.
There were also plenty of times where the imaging showed us that a bait ball had come through the spot, pulling all of the crappie away from it. Without the imaging, we could've easily just sat there fishing for nothing without a clue. I agree, I love being able to cast into a creek or the ocean and hook up with the unknown. On the open water though, I don't see a problem with boaters using the tech to make their limited time more productive.
If anglers are still respecting legal limits and putting back some of the giant breeders, I don't think it live imaging has a negative effect. More focused effort means less fuel expenditure and subsequent exhaust, less time meandering around and creating wake for others, fewer boats stalking other boats for their spots, etc. All good things for the sport. Not everyone has a mental map of sunken trees passed down from their families to help them locate fish, and this type of tech is what will keep the practice approachable in the future.

I have to say I am against live scope setups in all ways, especially in tournaments. But, I am a believer in depth finders only, with maybe a temperature of the surface water. The more the technology has increased the less skill and focus and research is required. Just my opinion.
I do believe some tournaments are banning the use.

The only real reason I run a "fish finder", a Garmin, is to see water depth as in prop/foot saver duty. Second is for navigating it's onboard maps, but i could even do without that.

When it comes to fishing, Im a caveman! The more primitive the better! I don't use Live Scope for the same reason I don't use digital gear. I absolutely love Spencer's channel, and I overlook his use of Live Scope because he does a lot of old school techniques as well. So if the water is very cold and the fish are not biting, I do either one or two things. 1) I chumb the water heavily. Or 2), I stay home until it warms up.
I don't like fishing when it is cold. This is why I will NEVER ice fish!

They'll be jumping in the boat before long to get it over with. They barely have a chance now. But it's hard to handicap yourself when everyone is fishing ffs. I think it'd take the fun out but I'm yet to experience it. Half the battle is finding g fish. Now we can see into their homes. Must be fun or everyone wouldn't be doing it though.

If fishing for fun or a type of recreation live scope takes away the enjoyment and pleasure of trying to catch fish. If fishing for food or tournaments then it becomes an advantage. After all that’s why it’s called fishing. Loved the catch and cook portion on the boat

I use a Garmin Striker 4 plus with the ducer mounted inside my kayak hull with plumbers putty. It’s only $150ish. The main advantage for me is the depth readings, and seeing where the ledges are. It actually spots fish quite well. I also use it for ice fishing and like it better than my more expensive Humminbird flasher. There is a separate ice kit and ducer for the Garmin. It’s super affordable. Live scope is great but the cost…

The potential for abuse and over harvest is something that is on my mind. In some lake it wouldn’t take long to effect the stocks. For every responsible person there are dozens of individuals who have no problem with destroying the balance of nature by overfishing. I see it every trip to the lake when I release undersized fish and others with 7-8 people on a pontoon keeping everything they get to the boat. Might not be a problem where you live but I think my local lake would probably have undesirable consequences

I can see keeping up with the competition in tournaments. Take every advantage you can. Especially on lakes and ice. Technology is cool. On the other hand. I spend enough time with my eyes on a screen. Is it cheating? I don't think so. Does it take away from the "adventure" and just taking in nature? Yup.

because of tech like this the next generation will not need to learn how to fish or to learn fish behavior. the art and magic of fishing will be removed. it is cool tech, it is also cheating. it will start to have serious consequences on the fisheries as well. i know guys getting their limits of 50 crappie or 150 sunfish in 30 min to an hour. before livescope, they would still catch a lot of fish but very rarely limit. its going to hurt bass, badly. look 10 years down the line when the tech becomes affordable for literally everyone. bye bye fishing. i will never forgive the people who used it, and destroyed my children and grandchildrens ability to enjoy this timeless and beautiful sport in the future.

Livescope is super cool and gives the fisherman a massive upper hand. However I feel it should not be used in tournaments. It takes the "knowledge" out of fishing. I'm a good guide because of years of knowledge, making mistakes, and most importantly putting time on the water. That is what we go for to be on/in the water so for a few moments the world don't matter so much.

Fair chase is eliminated with livescope. It’s like spotlighting deer, hunting hogs with a night optic under a feeder. I get it on private property, but I feel strongly it shouldn’t be allowed. It also takes the experience of enjoying nature whe. You just stare at a screen. It’s just another thing adding to the slippery slope of society.

Yes, livescope is cheating. Also imagine it like this. Fishing is not what it used to be. Everywhere has been over pressured by mass fishing over the last 50 or more years with amazing technology and equipment. Whats left of fish is very little and they are just trying to hide and get by and live scope is just another further piece of technology to find all those last fish just barely hanging on. The idea of live scope is really cool but it's really messed up at the same time.

  • @rougaroux2359
    @rougaroux2359 7 месяцев назад

John here is the way I see it. Live Scope is more or less the same as baiting deer or bear. And we both know that is cheating. Using regular 2D Sonar, Sidescan, and Downscann is one thing. You still have to use the thing that God gave us. So my answer is Live Scope cheating? Yes, it is cheating. As fishermen it is up to us to use our brain and not technology to find fish. The only sonar that I use is 2D to locate bait and structure. It is up to me to find out what is on said structure. This is my sugar coated opinion.

  • @patrickwall8517

livescopes same lazy category as peddle drive kayaks, just a bum way of doing things. In all seriousness you do you bothers me none. Just do think we spend some much time in our busy lives staring at a screen we miss so much going on around us - don’t wanna drag too much of the screen into my fishing time. I’ve always said you need some sort of sonar, even 2d for your tourney fishing - being able see water temp depth and structure is a plus -

Is it cheating? Yes absolutely it is. If you’re good enough, they’ll find you. If you suck, you have to go find them. Any freshwater fish can swim faster to a bait then it took me to write this comment. Fish finders and live bait are for lazy fat goofs who just want quick and easy results without the work that makes it sport.
