I totally agree, Anthony. I now find myself spending the majority of my processing time creating masks. The actual adjustments end up better, but with far less effort. I'm still low down on the learning curve when it comes to refining masks, but I'm getting there. That's probably why I'm subscribed to your channel. Thanks much!

Thanks as always. The masking is now excellent. To me the poorest tool in LR is the erase heal and clone brushes. If they created a decent content aware erase then most of us would never have to jump out to PS.

This is a great nudge to review what you typically do in Lightroom vs. Photoshop when new tools become available. Thanks!

I have been thinking about commenting on one of your videos for a couple of weeks as I have watched quite a few to gain a better understanding of Lightroom and you have a methodical, easy to follow teaching style. The reason I needed to get up to speed is although I am a long time post processing photographer, I use Capture One, my photography club wanted me to teach a basic course on post processing but using Lightroom. I haven't really used it seriously since version 4 although I do have 6. I only started a few weeks ago so the new masking tools are not really new, just what came with my subscription. The most frustrating aspect that I have found is a significant number of tools are not available when using masks. Proper sharpening, HSL, Colour Grade, Tone Curve. Black and white, grain and profiles are the only parts of Capture One that cannot be used in a mask. Even Styles (presets) can be used with a mask.
In Lightroom I have found the Linear Gradient with an intersect of the sky most useful though. I agree with another comment here that the clone and heal tools are suboptimal, tragic even.
Keep up the good content, I wish you the best but I only have 10 days to finish my course and so can uninstall Adobe.

Hi, I am about to upgrade from Lightroom 5.7 to current version of Lightroom Classic and can't wait for the opportunity to process new, and old, images. As you said, so much has changed in the last few years that a new philosophy - dare I say a new paradigm - is appropriate. Much appreciation to you for your explanatory videos and demonstrations. One of the benefits of digital photography is that old images can get new life. Back in the film days, once you had something done, it was done or too expensive to try different "looks" with a print. Thank you again!

You're right. Since this release, I've been using the new masking tools for almost all my edits. I've started going back and reprocessing older images.

Hello -- indeed you´re right. It´s interesting that even in the past, when using Photoshop, that´s basically what I would do -- adjust LOCALLY instad of GLOBALLY. Now, with the new masking possibilites in LR opening up, I hope to be finding myself working myself more in Lightroom -- which I still think is a much more attractive package as a whole for working with photos in the classical sense, i.e. without deliberate alteration (Transforming, content aware copying and deleting etc.) of specific elements of the image.

Indeed, these are powerful tools that are hiding in plain sight! I often like to combine these smart masks with linear and radial masks to create compound tools for selective directional effects. It's so frustrating that the web version is missing these, yet the mobile edition has most of the options if running premium.

Very well thought out. I haven't had time to use any of the new masking yet, to busy taking care of my wife. Getting old sucks.

Thanks for the great tips. Recently I have been taking family photos outdoors. I learned that the masking with low contrast backgrounds looked good until I zoomed in. Then I had to extensively use the subtract brush.

Hi Anthony, I've definitely been using localised adjustments prior to finishing off with global adjustments with these new masks. As a side note, next time you're adjusting skin locally, try doing a little noise reduction. I find it smooths skin nicely without losing too much texture.

As you've explained in previous videos of yours, I've started to change the way I work. This has encouraged me in more different ways to get things done. All part of keeping us sharp and also our pictures. Thanks once again for your great way of demonstrating Anthony, cheers from Australia from an amateur. You are so much appreciated.

Thank you Anthony, I've resently got the new version of Lightroom, and I was confused by the new way it works. I have been using Lightroom for years, and was comfortable with how I worked with it. But now I will have to think if I want to put something into Photoshop or sort it out in Lightroom. You explain things very well, thank you.

First thing I did when I found out about the this was to look at applying a gaussian blur the way I would to a mask on a video in premiere. But of course, there is none. Why? Seems like such an easy thing to help blur the background and make the subject really pop.

The masking tools are great, especially with the latest updates. The latest chages really speeds up processing. I'm still trying to get my head around "intersect" but I think I'm getting there. I wonder if Adobe will be brining other tools into the masking tools, eg., HSL etc.

Yet another really useful Tutorial Anthony,
The New Masks are really amazing, and quite intuitive,
as well as also having complexity (especially when combining different types of Masks)
I've been trying to figure out how to use "Select Sky",
and if there is any way to replace the selected Sky,
as far as I can figure out. the only have to do the Replace Sky is elsewhere in the Develop Module,

Hi I’m wondering if you could help me, I followed one of your tutorials to add on1 photo raw to plug in from Lightroom but you did it in a different way. I think they have sorted it out but so it is a plug in now.
I still have mine in the way you did it. I am not able to go straight to on1 resize directly from my on1 raw. Could you advice me what I can do because I think this is what is causing the problem. Thank you

Unfortunately, the dupe/invert workflow is mostly unusable for anything other than web-res output. The quality of the image where the mask edges meet renders the output to a nice muddy, detail-less grey. I brought this up with Adobe when the tool was released and we're a long ways away from seeing any solution to the issue.

    • @rghurst

They improved the invert function in the latest version (14.4.1), but it still requires a little clean-up of the inverted mask. Still seems like a time saver to me.

I love lightroom now especially after they allowed copying of the ai masks. So how I edit now is I edit globally for the subject because there is more control there. And then I created a mask for everything but the subject and edit for that mask.
