Really impressed with your simple explanation. The easy and no rush appoch i found helpped me to follow your explanations . One of the biggest mistakes i have had to correct in my photography was simple but profound..I don't go out to see what i can find to take photos of. I got out to find an image i can see in my mind completed. The next thing is ISO i set mine at 64iso.l Carry a tripod and ensure i take the shot thats going to be exsponsed correctly i check my settings on screen. Mirror less camera are great for viewing the picture but its not always great at depth of field . Also letting the viewer know that each lens has its sweet spot . So get to know your equipment These tips i have to force myself to get into.making these a habit. It takes only a coupe of seconds to do but is worth it. The new bokkeh settings in light room have brought in a great help and mine works amazingly well. The idea of a complete blurry The bokkeh back ground .....all the time ...is a bad habit passed on over the years mostly by bloggers. I like the background to complement my image.i do like to tell a complete story. The iso now in light room is amazingly helpful. I have had to up the iso simplely because of the earlier darkernights here in England and the poor light sometimes beacause the skys are grey .This forces me to get out when the weather detates, another habbit i have learned. The things indoors can be done when the weather is bad or night fall dictates.. . Light room is a stage in completeing an image ready for display or print . I use it as an exstention to add to my ideas . I think that every peace of the puzzle in the presentation of an image is important as the next process . So😊👍 anyone who takes the time to share their knowledge deserve a thumbs up and a thank you. I do it in a similar way because I take a lot from you. One thing I like doing when I develop an image is taking "Snap Shots". That is very practical when you make some edits and want to test them or revert to the previous version.

Some great ideas. I will be adopting some of them. Thanks Anthony. I use Topaz DeNoise as a plug in and it works fantastic. I find that the new noise reduction (denoise) takes so long, like 14 mins, or says it is not compatible with this photo format.
Thanks for another great video. I use Lightroom Classic for all my images and am really impressed with the new masking and Denoise tools. My only problem now is the time my PC takes to render these powerful changes. The downside of these improvements for me is that even after upgrading my CPU the new masking tools still takes several seconds and Denoise can take several minutes and some times gives up completely. I guess I will have to bight the bullet and buy a new, much more powerful PC. I would appreciate your advice on suitable hardware specs required to run these new tools. Thanks.

I have decided to do it as the very last step after all the LrC edits.
Since I end up with two files, the raw and the dng, I feel OK in eventually getting rid of the enhanced DNG files just for space saving and reducing clutter.
Typically the file will be exported to whatever format is necessary for the destination.
I can easily re-create the de-noised version if needed, as there were no further Edits after I ran denoise.
Thank you, Anthony for sharing your workflow. I had a bit of a scare after the last Lightroom update. All of my presets were gone! I scoured RUclips looking for videos addressing this issue, none of them helped. Somehow I clicked on the right thing, and the dropdown of presets reappeared. Not sure what I did, but wonder if others had this problem.
I shoot raw and jpg. After adjusting white and black levels I go to Topaz DeNoise and process in LRC after that.

I work all the other way around; making one or two 100% filled masks, adjust, save those masks as pressets, and everything else in the basic panel and etc. This way I just need to adjust one slider if not two. Result is all pictures having the same style perfectly applied.
Again, Anthony another useful video I will be using especially on AI Noise Reduction.

Thanks for posting this video, I've been using a similar workflow for a few months now. Adobe has made a series of significant improvements to LR (and PS) over the past couple of years.

Try dropping the denoise down from 100%.. the image will typically be a little sharper
Yes it’s just not right denoising at 100%, you throw away a lot of the sharpness of the image…… 40% or so is more the enough for this image.
Plus, the images won't look like plastic... ugh.
@@mjmdiver1137 I think you both are on to something. We really don't know what the optimal denoise number is? I have been landing somewhere between 34 and 50. Too much noise is always weird, we need to find the sweet spot.
According to Adobe, the DeNoise slider is sticky and reverts to the setting used on the previous image.
When I first used the Denoise AI feature, it was set at 50. I’ve generally kept it around there with excellent results. Even a 10,000 ISO image ended up looking like one shot at ISO 200.
Not doing too much different to 14:22 that. The big tip for me is how you worked around the log. That made the shot in my opinion. It was dragging the bird down.. Thanks for this Anthony.

I miss something regarding LR masks. On 12:37, you subtract the foreground from the background and the bird with the brush. It would be great if you could subtract a mask copying from another mask.

My work flow is very similar to yours which I changed when they applied the new masking. Seems I am doing something right!
I am working through almost 100 event photos taken at ISO 1600 and find the Denoise option does a good job removing noise and preserving detail. Better than trying to find the sweet spot number of Luminance slider in the Detail panel. One quirky thing, the DNG file gets created with the Pick flag but the Filter option is returned to Filters Off so I see all the photos and have to turn it back to Flagged. On the upside, you can do a batch run of all the photos you select, so you can get a bunch done while you grab a drink, catch up on a couple emails or watch another Anthony Morganti video! (It took about15 minutes to Denoise the nearly 100 photos, GPU at 100% performance load.) Thanks for this video and all the ones you've shared!

Very nicely done. I know you also use Topaz products. How has your new workflow changed if and when you use those products? Lastly, I noticed your tutorial showed the new Lr Denoise function slider set to 100%. Does the AI change that setting after analyzing the image? Thanks for tutorials.
Nice tutorial. I’ve been using a very similar workflow to the one you describe here. The denoise tool is fantastic, and the masking is just great. I have gone back into my photo collection and re-edited some old photos to get looks I was unable to get with earlier vintage tools. Being able to select backgrounds and reduce texture and additional noise can help greatly with lenses that don’t have the world’s best bokeh! Dropping the exposure a bit relative to the subject to make the subject stand out better works well too.

The Denoise slider is sticky, so if you last had it at 100% it will open next time at 100% . Probably best starting at 50% then moving it to a position that looks best on an individual basis 100% is generally too much - too creamy. I wish that it opened at a default position of 50% as every photo is different and every ISO is too. It's a fantastic tool to have with the Adobe subscription. Well done to them. What about temperature in the global adjustments? Wouldn't you start from there?
I couldn't agree with you more about how Lightroom CC has changed my workflow too. I was just thinking about how different during a recent edit session. It's unlikely we'll see another video about how innovations have affected workflow on RUclips. Great subject for a video. I process my photos very much like you do. That said, Adobe does recommend 50% as a starting point for Denoise, then adjusting to view results in real=time until it's just the way you want it. Not sure why you never mention this. I've never gone about 80% on my noisiest images. In fact, for some images, I'll go just to the point where I can barely see the tiniest bit of noise while zoomed in, so that when viewing at full screen I get the maximum original sharpness with no visible noise, then add sharpness where I need it using masks either in Lightroom or in a 3rd party app.

Unfortunately, currently Adobe cannot use the very fast Apple Neural Engine on Apple Silicon chips for Denoise AI because of an Apple bug. Adobe's Eric Chan reported that they were going to use the Neural Engine because it is so fast (and they use Nvidia Tensor cores on PCs), but then it was reported that there is an Apple bug which prevents the use. 😞 Therefore Adobe must use the slower GPU on Apple Silicon until Apple fixes the bug.
It turns out that DXO also reports an Apple Neural Engine bug (color shifts) in Ventura, but not Monterey. DXO recommends that Ventura users use only the GPU and not the Neural Engine. It is unknown whether this is the same Neural Engine bug that Adobe has found. It has been more than 6 months since DXO found the bug and there have been 6 Ventura updates since then and it is still not fixed. I hope Adobe has more leverage with Apple than DXO apparently does.

Once you edit with denoise I see a #2 on the photo in the photo strip. I know it creates another file but do you need to blend the two together for the final image? Or is it all set to export? Ty
De Noise works on a Huawei P20 Pro, not a typical Bayer filter but one combining multiple pixels. And it rejects the Canon 5D Mark II.
Lightroom DiNoise for me, has produced some very blotchy/banding final jpeg images ! No problem Topaz Photo AI

So question. If using something like DXO Pure Raw. Will that look at the file before or after edits. If after edits, I would want to do all but sharpening (I do not sharpen in RAW anyway) so that any way that I edit that brings MORE noise out of the file can be read and compensated against. Is my thinking correct for this specific scenario?

Hi Anthony. My NEF files converted to DNG in Lightroom the Denoise appears to work normally.
If your photo needs both noise reduction and sharpening when, in your workflow, would you send it to Topaz PhotoAI?
Got the birds leg when you brushed the log.
The only issue I have is if I want to remove an object in the photo and use PS to do this when I save back to LR it won’t let me AI denotes the image as it is a Tiff file now. Any work round or just best to apply Denise first? Thanks

I to am noticing it takes a significant amount time ( approximately 8 minutes) when using the denoise protion and I have newer processor in my computer.
Also the tips about the massking tool was very interesting and helpful, thanks.
PS: I have noticed you never seem to do anything with white balnce when processing a photo, care to comment?
The Denoise uses your GPU so it could be that yours is slow or make sure use graphics processor is on in preferences.
I had the same problem with Denoise taking a long time. I have a new computer/processor but it wasn't until I added a gpu that the process sped up considerably. I did not have a gpu before.
The de-noise takes forever on my computer, did you speed that part up as you didn't say. That is the only thing that puts me off using it. 30+ minutes sometimes and I have a I7 processor so it should be reasonably fast
Please let me know whats happening, I shoot in RAW the images show ARW and when I try to use denoise it says it dosnet work with this type of file! Is there a different type of RAW? Thank you
I convert my Fuji RAF files to DNG, and Denoise works with no problem.

Why are you using the Profil „Adobe Color“? Have you ever tried Camera flat or Camera neutral as a starting point. For the new Z-cameras like the Z9 this is essentially.
I've seen on a number of sites (Including yours) stating that Lightroom denoise doesn't work on DNG files - only raw from the camera. I shoot Nikon raw (NEF) files and convert them to DNG during import to Lightroom. I've tried denoise on some of these DNG files and it appears to work flawlessly. As a test I've just imported a 3200 ISO file in both NEF as is and also the same one auto converted to DNG and denoise works identically on both.
I have done the same with my Nikon files. They are converted to DNG on import and the Lightroom DeNoise seems to work flawlessly.

Would be nice if they prioritised the most needy of noisy images ie phone raw files.
Be nice if you could convert to DNG and denoise on importing files so that you only have to store one file per photo.

Hi Anthony, been following you for years but I don't believe I've ever needed to comment before.
Thinking of catalog maintenance, do you do anything with the original raw file after you finish processing the new denoised file? Would you delete it and just keep the new file? Would you copy the denoised file settings on to the original and save that one? Or keep them both and maybe stack them?

One comment on the denoised dng files. They are HUGE. Typically they are 120Mb, but I have seen them in the 200Mb+ range. For me, I’ve been making my edits on the dng, copying them back to the original raw file, exporting jpg files from the dng, and then deleting the dng. Eventually I may put the denoised dng files on an external hard drive for storage.

If I merge 5 photos into a focus stack by going from lr to ps and then back, the file is then a tiff. I can’t use DeNoise on a tiff. Solution?
Doesn’t it work to process the individual images with Denoise and then stack the resultant DNG? That’s what Adobe recommends anyway
That’s my issue with it…I shoot brackets & merge in Photomatix…will wait for tiff support
I’ve noticed also & raised it with Adobe the new denoise does not work with AEB BRACKETED images in camera raw, you have to open in LR OR PS then go back which is quite annoying, I never got no real answer from Adobe other than this you’d like it to be on your welcome list or something 🙄
At the stage of global adjustments, I select Auto. I then adjust sliders to taste, however I found it unnecessary to do so more than 95% of the times.
As a longtime artist and photographer, I am always bemused by this sort of thinking. You prefer to let a machine intelligence make your creative decisions for you rather than your own eye? You give up a lot, sir.
Andre work flow by using auto as start makes sense and does not take away any creativity because he uses it as a start. In a way he uses auto much like a preset. I often thought of doing the same.

@@richbottarini86 I have about sixty years in photography. It is like sending slides or negatives to a lab in the old days and saying " whatever you think looks best." No way. Takes about ten prints before I dial a photograph in. There is no right way of doing anything and the visual arts are subjective but the better photographers I have known are very critical about how they want things to eventually look. The human eye is still far superior to an algorithm at understanding beauty and composition.
Why not mask upfront at least the subject and the background and/or foreground if needed and then adjust different brightness, blacks, etc. for the 2-3 masks.

You have to be careful with halos when using the people or object selection tools. I find it’s worthless for exposure adjustments.

Their content aware remove tool is utterly SHIT ! Ive never had it work once. Always "smudgy" results.
Unfortunately all videos tell us how amazing lightroom is, so they dont care about improving it imo.
I would like to use Denoise but it can take several minutes (I've seen as high as 25 minute estimate) on a 45Mpixel Nikon Z7 image to Denoise an image on my older PC with an NVidia960 graphics card. It seems to max out the GPU on the Video card. It looks like this will require a hardware upgrade to make it practical. What are your typical processing times for a 45Mpixel image?
My D850 images take around 45 seconds to complete denoise on an i7 2020 iMac w/8Gb 5500 gpu. Files are also 45Mpx. It’s faster for smaller files.
@Steven Gahr I have an older I7 with 24mb memory task manager shows they aren't busy so it's the graphics card. Thanks for responding!
