I was looking for a good explanation for the Radius and Detail sliders. Finally I found it. There is no way to explain it better than you. Thank you very much.
Thanks! A few years ago Adobe increased the default Sharpening level from 25 to 40 because reviewers were complaining that raw files didn’t look as sharp in Adobe software as in the competition like Capture One, who were applying sharpening “under the hood” that users couldn’t adjust but that looked more impressive at first glance.
Thank you for this concise and clear explanation of how to use Sharpening in Lightroom! I would love to see a video about how to use the Texture & Clarity tools.😊
I pretty much understood about sharpening including the modifier on masking. Your explanation was very helpful in further understanding the subject, thank you.
I’ve only watched this and the newer effects tuts - thanks. It would be nice to see some of these demonstrated using portraits, like for skin softening which you mentioned in the Effects tutorial. Thanks for these.
i love the video..its gonna make my editing so much better now that i understand those 4 sliders functions. Maybe u can do a vdeo on the Luminance/detail/contrast sliders also. thanks for the great video..super helpful.
Brian - This is the best detailed explanation I've seen on the LR sharpening functions. Well done. I assume this is all about sharpening for viewing on a screen. Would love to hear your thoughts about sharpening for various media types (i.e. matte v. luster).
Great lesson. Makes things clearer again for me. Would appreciate a vid about the effects sliders. Many thanks for your always interesting contributions. Keep it up.
I'm always impressed on how gifted you are as a trainer. I love your Sharpening video is great and it helped me better understand this subject. Thank you. Yes I would love you to do a video on effects.
Excellent presentation Brian. I like your conversational style and clarity of steps on how to get the best when sharpening an image. Am now a new subscriber to your channel.
He is so good at explaining things!! is the Lightroom everywhere focusing on the mobile version more or LRC ?? Im using LRC for the most part on a desktop
Excellent explantion of how much I was mistaken about sharpening tools. Thank you. And yes please explain Texture tools and when in the work flow they should be used.
Another great video, you explain everything so great. And in a very calm and clear way. Love to see aa video from you about texture, clarity and dehire. Thank you !!!
Excellent instructional Brian! Serves as a great refresher for me because I quit using Lr and LrC's sharpening tool when AI sharpening in other software started showing up. I learnt how to use it manually in LrC just as you showed here some time ago but rarely use it these days. 👍😎👍
I hear ya. I’ll toss an image to Topaz Photo AI if the lack of sharpness is really bad, but for the most part, I’m happy with the results of LR’s sharpening.
@@brianmatiash I use TPAI too at times. My go to is an auto sharpening action in a panel I use in Photoshop. (Included in Blake’s Zone System Express 7 course.) 😎
Exzellent explanation to understand sharpening. I am using clarity and texture with just a visual understanding of what happens and I would appreciate a more detailed explanation.
Great teaching. Please also teach on texture and the other sliders. Secondly - do you recomend sharpening with both LR and f. example NIK or just one of these programs?
Hey Brain, terrific video! You pick the best topics and you have such a great and understandable way of teaching important concepts in a way that we can immediately utilize you teaching! I have a follow-up question. This process is obviously taught in mind for "an only Lightroom" user. What would you tell us differently if we have Topaz (other than check out your videos on the topic!!)? Do we still LR sharpen? Still do so at the end? Any important thoughts that you might share with us? Thank you for all of your fantastic teachings!
Very helpful. Would like to see more on clarity texture & dehaze. Also, at what point in workflow should the denoise filter be applied. When should the sharpening be applied if I take my photos into photoshop for editing?
Thanks Brian! Excellent! Indeed, when sharpening, zooming in helps a lot. On my iPad Pro 12.9 inch M2, which I now use most of the time for editing in LR, how do I know when I have zoomed in at 100%? There seems to be no indication of that.
Very good👍 one question - do you add additional sharpening when exporting for screen or print? This has always confused me.... I'm looking at an image on screen with a host of sharpening/contrast tools. Then right at the end outside of editing I get asked again 🤔
I thought that for Raw files, you had to set the Detail slider to maximum to manage a 1st level of sharpness at the Raw demosaicing level (that's what tools like DXO's PureRaw do). The "Amount" slider lets you manage a more "creative" sharpness. Do you agree with this theory? Thanks for the video.
Excellent video. I would be surprised if Lightroom only lightens the light side of edges and darkens the dark side of edges. More likely there is a filter, which accounts for a light stripe inside your black checker square when sharpening is turned all the way up.
Great question. I generally don’t apply sharpening at the mask level. If anything, I’ll apply localized clarity and texture, but sharpening is done globally at the end with heavy use of the masking slider.
A bit late and off-topic, but do you think any “major” updates for LR and LRc from Adobe MAX 2024 will be announced? Looks like the London event was pretty much a ‘Photoshop’ event, just curious as to whether you have heard anything.
There’s a small difference with Fuji’s X-Trans sensor, compared to the Bayer sensor for which your video is impeccable. To follow your steps with Fuji RAW files, you should first use Enhance Details (right-click on the image in LR), then these instructions work. Otherwise, you get better sharpness by increasing Sharpening and Radius considerably but keeping Detail to 0 (and play with Masking). Think of the Detail slider as Unsharp Mask at 0 and Deconvolution at 100, for those who know the difference and are more familiar with Photoshop. I have a very detailed guide on Sharpening for Fujifilm on my blog (and should finally make a video), but I won’t spam my links on someone else’s channel. 😊
😂 don’t shortchange yourself! The biggest difference between those sliders has to do with what gets affected and how. It’s one of those things that is easier to see than to read about (in my opinion), so keep an eye out for a new video about that.
Never sharpen your image because the lens sharpness is often better than you can get with LR (LR produce artefacts),sharpen only when you are going to print the image on paper. 0.5 radius is best for high frequency( small detail )and high resolution images, and higher than 1.0 is for low frequency images like portrait and skin.
Probably the best explanation of how sharpening works I've ever seen.
I was looking for a good explanation for the Radius and Detail sliders. Finally I found it. There is no way to explain it better than you. Thank you very much.
You’re very kind! Thank you so much!
You are a great instructor. Please use your awesome talent to explain texture, clarity and dehaze. Thanks!!
That would be great
Best tutorial on LR sharpening I’ve seen. Thank you!
Thank you, great explanation, would love to see a video on Texture, Clarity and Dehaze
Sounds good! I’ll work on an outline for this soon.
In Spain we have a saying; "you can say it louder but not better"👍
I would love to see a video on texture, clarity and dehaze. Thanks, Brian.
Brilliant explanation Brian. Thank you!
My pleasure!

You really have a way of explaining in detail in an understandable manner. Keep it up and looking forward to watching past and future videos.
That’s one of the best compliments I could ask for! Thank you, Rob!
Masterclass, to the point and not too much jargon
BIG THUMBS UP on this sharpening in Lightroom video! Thanks for sharing...
Woohoo! My pleasure!
Thank you for this concise and clear explanation of how to use Sharpening in Lightroom! I would love to see a video about how to use the Texture & Clarity tools.😊
Me too.
I pretty much understood about sharpening including the modifier on masking. Your explanation was very helpful in further understanding the subject, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Fabulous. I didn't use sharpening until today, this video gives me the knowledge and understanding to give it a try
Thanks, first time I've really grasped how sharpening works - brilliant
Another great educational video, thank you. A similair one on the effects sliders would be much appreciated.
Consider it done, Tony! And thank you!
Very clear explanation. Thank you.
Brilliant and in depth explanation so that we can decide how much! Yes please to a video on effects panel sliders!
Best demonstration of this aspect I’ve seen in all my years, so I had to subscribe! Thank you.👏😀👍
Finally, I’ve been wanting this video for some time. Nice job explaining radius and detail.
I’ve only watched this and the newer effects tuts - thanks. It would be nice to see some of these demonstrated using portraits, like for skin softening which you mentioned in the Effects tutorial. Thanks for these.

Well done. You're the best ! Yes on clarity and texture please
¡Gracias!

Great explanation of sharpening! I’d be very interested in a video on texture, clarity and dehaze. Thank you!
Thanks for this great explanation. You did not mention print sharpening and how this would work, both in LR and in PS.
Thanks, that explains a lot
Great lesson. Makes things clearer again for me. Would appreciate a vid about the effects sliders. Many thanks for your always interesting contributions. Keep it up.
This is the best explanation/tutorial on sharpening I’ve seen in RUclips and elsewhere. Thank you!
Outstanding and very informative video, Brian. Well done! I would welcome a video on Texture, Clarity and Dehaze as well.
I'm always impressed on how gifted you are as a trainer. I love your Sharpening video is great and it helped me better understand this subject. Thank you. Yes I would love you to do a video on effects.

Exzellent explanation to understand sharpening. I am using clarity and texture with just a visual understanding of what happens and I would appreciate a more detailed explanation.
Consider it done, Manfred.
Great teaching. Please also teach on texture and the other sliders. Secondly - do you recomend sharpening with both LR and f. example NIK or just one of these programs?

Another excellent instructional video. Thank you!!
If you use Bridge, the same tools are also available in ACR
Thx Brian. Just curious how you can select HALF a pixel?
Excellent thanks, yes I'd like to see similar for the effects panel
Great explanation. Thanks Brian!

Another great video! Count me in for a video on clarity, texture, and dehaze.
Thank you, Evan! And it’s on the docket to record. Maybe next week. 👍🏼
Very well explained. Many thanks!
My pleasure!
Very helpful and well done. Thank you, sir.
Brilliantly explained! Thank you ☺️

If you haven't already, please do a video on texture vs clarity
Done! 😃 ruclips.net/video/RvDxtKt4Qtg/видео.html

This was a great Video an you explaaind it superb
It would be most “illuminating” to see a video on the Effects Panel 😎
I see what you did there 😄 look out for that video either next week or the week after. 👍🏼
A bit late and off-topic, but do you think any “major” updates for LR and LRc from Adobe MAX 2024 will be announced? Looks like the London event was pretty much a ‘Photoshop’ event, just curious as to whether you have heard anything.
Does someone know why i dont have these Detail Radius and Masking Sliders ?
I just have Sharpening and cant open the Detail panel for more

Nicely Presented👍👍
I use those Effects sliders all the time so I guess I could use a video showing me how I've been doing it wrong. lol

The devil is in the detail, very nicely demonstrated, thank you.

I just skipped this option because I never knew what it’s doing…from now
Great explanation Brian ! Thanks
