10,000 Bolts - Should I Quit Before Starting - 1968 Honda S800

  • Elise described it best " It is like the original owner passed away and someone came in and threw parts in a box and bags without care. As if they wanted to get the car and parts out of there and sold at a estate sale or something".
I wish I did not have to make this video but it is what it is.
Am I a sucker? No. But can someone be unprofessional? Of course, I am not going to waste anymore time on this project and being smart is knowing when to abort mission than to head into a losing battle.

Are you scrapping the whole project or just the engine? I feel like this is a setback, but organizing the bolts could just be step one of getting this back together. You can get a kit which you can use to match threads to identify. It's a lot of work, but would make one hell of an origin story. I say at least have a go at that part of it and go from there. You can use a micrometer to determine thread depth on the engine and match bolts that way. Some support from the S800/600 community on things you cant figure out. Make friends with the local machine shop. Lots of ways to engage the community to get this done.

I’m still on the fence. I listed it but higher than I think it’s worth to start getting a feel for offers I will get. As I start to organize and get everything in order, I am starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. My only concern is the engine rebuild and I am still trying to work things out with the seller. We will see…

If you had consulted someone who knows these cars, they would have told you that this is not the car you want to restore in bags. Even an expert would have a hard time figuring out if you have the correct hardware. I just restored an S600- I pulled it apart and labeled everything and still lost some parts. You can still do it, you just need someone to guide you- or, sell it.

    • @DriversTherapy

I did consult someone…the seller. I was told this was a ready to assembly project that was nicely organized.

@@DriversTherapy One more possibility you MUST assume with any unlabeled project like this: the bags contain incorrect bolts for this car- random bolts the seller thought go with the car, but actually has no idea. I'd hate to see you waste time even trying to sort through those bags!

You have only had the S800 a few days and it's way too soon to throw in the towel. iv'e had mine 15 years and it still isn't quite finished yet (though i did throw in an S2000 engine) Join the UK S800 owners club and forum as there are a few on there with spares to hand.

Oh and fitting an S2000 engine wasn't easy. i think you will regret selling the S800 after all the effort getting it, and they are small enough to tuck into a corner till you get your mojo back. I have felt the same at times but glad i never tried to sell the S800 and never will. It was complete and on the road when i bought it in 2007 but tatty. engine went to Portugal from the UK. Recently purchased a '66 Barracuda that came from the US in 2019 and now have to do the floors properly and undo many bodges iv'e found. That's cars for you.

Hi!!! I actually have seen your videos and read your posts on the Honda forums. You are so far in completing something so cool and also a swap everyone talks about. Small world. Thank you for the advice and encouragement. I’m starting to reconsider selling it as I start to put things together slowly.

    • @DriversTherapy

It sucks for sure but the engine is the most special part about this car. I plan on selling it and hopefully to someone who knows way more about them and understands the situation in whole. Stuff like this happens. I was a mad all day yesterday, ripped a drawer out of a nightstand but in better now. Motivated to move on.
