In 1968 my father spent a few months on Guam working for Lockheed on the fleet ballistic missile submarines. His rental car was a Honda S800 and he loved it. Flash forward to 1974 and I reported to VQ-1 (Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE) as a Navy Airborne Electronic Warfare Officer. One of the first things I did was start searching for a Honda S800 since, after all, I had learned to drive and had taken my driving test in a 1960 Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite. I found an S800 hatchback in a dirty, rusty color with an engine that had been modified for autocross so it was pumping out 135 HP at 12,000 RPM. Rev it to 8000 RPM and dump the clutch and you left 75-100 feet of black rubber stripes. Drove it, started working on the body and the interior and noticed that the clutch was starting to show wear. Took it to the local (and only) Honda dealership for a new clutch. When I got it back two weeks later it would barely move and the dealership would not talk to me or look at my S800. Took it to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the engine had been severely over-revved and it had swallowed a piston ring. I contacted the Honda dealership and told them they had to fix it because they readily admitted that their Chief Mechanic had gone to test drive, had missed a shift and revved it to an estimated 14,000 RPM. They told me to F-off. They refused to fix it and refused to order the parts for me from Honda. When I threatened to call the Better Business Bureau they wished me a happy trip to Hawaii and the nearest BBB. I deployed regularly to Japan and found out that Honda had a policy in Japan at the time that they would only provide parts to dealerships and the Japanese dealerships would not then sell the parts to me. @@jev2867 And yet, it's well understood in the automotive history world that Japanese design of the time was very much following the Europeans. Hell, the S800 is without question inspired by the British sports cars, like Triumph, Sunbeam, MG, TVR, etc.

They did not literally taken specific design cues. And again, I and many will not mistake the early Datsuns, Hondas, Toyotas for their European counterparts (mostly British.)
I'll preface my overly lengthy comments with a couple of things: I have never seen your channel before But at a quick glance it appears that most of the builds you feature seem to be far better executed than those I am personally aware of. I'm also not much of a movie guy and so I must admit to the fact that I do not know who Daniel Wu is. One thing that I apparently do have in common with Daniel is that I too am a Honda fan. In my case, for most of my life (literally). My first Honda, of the sort that that zips around on two wheels, came at around 9 years of age and now almost 50 years later I still own two, a motorcycle and a car - a CB1100 and a S2000. My approach, for the most part, has been to leave my Honda's (cars and motorcycles alike) almost completely stock. I imagine that there isn't a whole lot of crossover between our respective worlds other than the fact that if nothing else car guys always have a passion for cars in common. Yet when the thumbnail for this S800 video popped up in my RUclips feed I couldn't help but click 'n watch. Given my background, it shouldn't come as a surprise that when I see an incredibly rare and beautiful car like a S800 has been fairly extensively modified, my gut reaction is "God, no!". The reality is that the vast majority of "builds" that I've been exposed to are cars that have been butchered without any clear vision minus the funds, time, and effort spent to make them worthy of the cars that were consumed in the process. But through the course of watching this video it quickly became apparent that this particular build was an entirely different beast (and what an awesome little beast it is). When I learned that this build resulted from salvaging what would likely been two cars that eventually would have found their way to the crusher, I couldn't help but love it. Daniel's vision that exists at the very core of this build is incredible. That he was able to do justice to his vision by ensuring that the proper level of commitment was carried out (both in terms of the quality of the materials used and the quality of the work that was done) over every square inch of this car is truly what makes this build so wonderful. I honestly can't find any fault with this car. Every single choice Daniel made works in perfect harmony, both visually and functionally with every other choice. That is such a rare thing to see executed in this day and age of instant gratification. Not that Daniel would concern himself with what a random guy like me thinks, but in all honestly, the greatest compliment I can pay to this car, and to Daniel, is that even I - "Mr. Keep That Rare Honda Stock", can't help but be totally mesmerized by this amazing S800. It is truly a work of art that honors the craft of doing things the right way. I personally would not say that this car is "better" so much than it is "different" than say a well preserved or expertly restored original S800 (I've spent some time admiring an unbelievably clean original S600 Coupe up close and feel they are incredibly cool cars just as they left the factory). But in this case, "different" is a jaw-droppingly beautiful thing. I can honestly say I hope when the time comes that this car finds it's way into the hands of a new owner (hopefully far, far down the road), that they do not change a single thing. I thank Daniel Wu for sharing his car with the reset of us and I thank Hoonigan Auto Focus for making it happen. You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks as the saying goes, but when the circumstances are right you can open his eyes up to the beauty of this world in places where he would never expect to find it. With much respect, Peace
Great, honest post. In general I appreciate (and search for myself), the most original examples of whatever catches my fancy at the time, but I would love to have this car. I actually have an earlier S600- all original. What is a big turn-off, and not just in the car world BTW, are people who are so rigid in their opinion of what's right and wrong there is no flexibility whatsoever- it's almost a disease really. Sometimes it really is just a car.
Daniel Wu is one of the biggest action stars in current Chinese cinema (Top 5 I'd say). He might not be as well known outside Asian markets as Donnie Yen (of Ip Man fame), but he is pretty well known in Asia, having starred in 50+ films, mostly action films and the occasional chick flick (chicks DIG his looks). Think of him as Chinese Tom Cruise. I never knew he was such a huge car guy. Saw his other builds and his collection only made me respect him even more. A lot of action stars drives fast cars outside of movies just for the looks and attention. Daniel Wu actually being a real car guy gets some mad respect from me.
My story is very similar, with the exception of being a huge movie guy. I own an S2000CR, NT650, VFR800 and an XR650R supermotard. My daily driver is a WD21 Pathfinder, which also make me a bit of a Nissan nerd. My personal machines aside, I found this car's story very interesting as well. My originality nerd always goes off when mods are discussed, but in the case of saving tow cars to make one perfect example I couldn't agree more; especially when it's done this well. Cheers.
Daniel have made some cool 'gangsterish' movies back in Hong Kong. This car is such a reflection on him. One of Larry's pic of Daniel walking off with the car just scream bad ass. Fantastic built!
As an engineer and a car guy, I have much respect for Daniel Wu. He took such an active roll in this car. That is how a car guy does it. Much respect Daniel. Such an awesome build. Absolutely love this car. Always loved the look of the S800. But this takes it to another level. Great job!!
I would also say that Daniel seems so humble and the way he explains how he got to build it is actually really nice. He does seem to drive his cars the way they should be driven.
The Honda S800 has some interesting and amusing history. 1 - The first car (in Europe) to have a sub liter engine and can break the 100 MPH barrier. 2 - When they were dyno testing the engine, and removed the limiter, it broke the engine dyno. 3 - The engine is very interesting. A Dual overhead cam, 8 valve, long stroke inline 4
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 I am not 100% on it, but I think the Honda S800 only has around 70 HP @ 8000 RPM. I think the S800 can rev up to 11,000 RPM without the Govner, and at that time I think it was the first car engine that could rev that high. I think the dyno shook apart from over revving, while the car engine didn't.
JohnSmith FakeName The the car being under 800kg that 70bhp is proper quick. The energy transferred to the driver from engine speeds that this engine is capable of, ~12k rpm, is supercar levels of excitement. Add to that Italian style carburetors to add insane induction noise and the package as a whole is legendary to the few that know about this classic gem. Thanks for the added info!

It's absolutely beautiful, stunning in fact. Every tiny detail ties together perfectly to create the whole. It exudes a sense of restrained aggression. I could look at this thing all day long.
My dad owned both an S600 Coupe and an S800 convertible, he cried when he was forced to sell them, he knew they would be worth something one day and was devastated that he was not able to restore them himself. Both cars were all original, had all their trim but needed bodywork, paint and interiors redone. He had already taken care of all the mechanical work and both cars ran like new. I have sent him the link to this, he will be smiling for days. Thanks guys, great vid.

I do not know much about cars, but this one is pure style. I friggin' love it. Kudos to Daniel Wu for making such a beast, and to you, Larry, for documenting it :)
Absolutely stunning. I vintage raced a Honda S800 for 25 years and can identify with the difficulty of getting parts. Mine started as a coupe but using a donor car, I chopped it and made it into a roadster partly because I could not find a replacement windshield for the coupe!
This car just makes me like the guy even more! Beautiful work to accomplish this with a steep learning curve that he was dealing with is really amazing. Thank you for showing it. Know of the car but it’s Beauty is another level!
God damn that may be the nicest looking car I've ever seen. Every bit of styling is so perfectly balanced. Also love how unique and small it is. Honda did some really great work at that time and this build just owns it.

Just cool AF! Love it Wu! The story behind the theme for car carried through to perfection. Bring on more old Japanese metal. Always wanted to get a 60's Mazda Luce and do something similar.
I love the reference to being an architect during a build. I felt like this when I did my own Honda and would have loved to have all the names of everyone involved in the build under the bonnet (sorry hood!) - but in the end its literally hundreds of people!
When the customizing is tastefully done, I don't think you're ruining it, I think you're reinvigorating it and giving it a new lease in life. That little Honda in my mind is gorgeous...
A master is revealed in all his actions, in this case, a car restoration. Love the attention to detail and all the little things (like the “spine” on the headlight glass). I know it takes a great deal of vision and patience to put something like that together. Classy, yet gangster 👊
That is such an absolutely amazing build. The main challenge you face when working on such extremely rare cars is the need to fabricate from raw materials any replacement parts that you need because they just don't exist anymore.
Back in 1973 I had the privilege of driving the S800 regularly because I worked as a director of a Honda Car Dealer/Garage. It made the Mini Cooper look like a Morris Minor on the start block. I loved it's motorbike power. Incredible for the 1970's. Even today I can remember some of the part numbers...
So clean, so good! And to also mention, so much taste that went into this build I can savor it all the way to where I'm watching this video. Looks agile too for a 70ish HRSPRS?! Sending a chef's kiss to this car.

With much respect,
Peace
Wow, thank you for watching.
Word..
I spent a cool 20 minutes photographing this thing at the SF Auto Show, definitely one of my top 3 favorite builds ever!!
Wow..when you take all that in ,mentally speaking, thats really interesting, thanks
How many hp did it make when they went all in
@@rustedratchetgarage6788
I am not 100% on it, but I think the Honda S800 only has around 70 HP @ 8000 RPM. I think the S800 can rev up to 11,000 RPM without the Govner, and at that time I think it was the first car engine that could rev that high. I think the dyno shook apart from over revving, while the car engine didn't.
A 4 banger!
Amazing build and great job with this video!
Already had a lot of respect for his Tanto build. Scratch that - so much more respect for him to build this. Well done Daniel and keep up the good work Larry and stay safe.
As someone from Hong Kong Daniel is a legend, in both the film and car scene.
I like when you said I'v never seen a Honda S800, and he smirks and looked at you and said "In person"... thats the look of pure joy and content
Chapeau to Daniel Wu. He did right by this car - I love it. Not to short change you Larry, that was a satisfying video, I was enthralled.
Really getting an appreciation for these classic Japanese cars.
wldwst22 that car probably helped this dude fetch an American girl or 2 😃
What's your dream car?
I absolutely love old Japanese cars they sre sick they sre small and nimble basically this cat is a mini Ferrari gotta love it
My dream car would be a 1990 civic ef sedan worth a k24 roots sport charger and make it all wheel drive sequential trans make it look old school meets hot rod cut a hole in the hood so the super charger fits kinda like the ones with a itb setup they cut a hole in the hood in most cases when they use k series motor
@@LadyWanderlust, just saw this reply. My dream car would be nothing like this. My dreams are made up Hypercars like a McLaren P1 or resto build from the Ring Brothers of a 1970 Boss 302 for Robert Downey Jr.
It's absolutely beautiful, stunning in fact. Every tiny detail ties together perfectly to create the whole. It exudes a sense of restrained aggression. I could look at this thing all day long.
Daniel Wu: Hey, what're you doing with that car?
Friend: Nothing
Daniel Wu: Sell it to me
lol friends
Daniel Wu: hahahaha gangster
My dad owned both an S600 Coupe and an S800 convertible, he cried when he was forced to sell them, he knew they would be worth something one day and was devastated that he was not able to restore them himself. Both cars were all original, had all their trim but needed bodywork, paint and interiors redone. He had already taken care of all the mechanical work and both cars ran like new. I have sent him the link to this, he will be smiling for days. Thanks guys, great vid.
The entire Sx00 family is just absolutely beautiful. I'm so jealous.
Never seen one, but the design of it all is why I appreciate these old classic imports! Awesome job!
Never I’m my life would I say “wow that Honda is beautiful”, cool, sick dope, clean ect. But man this thing is beautiful...
Daniel is a super legit enthusiast. The stories about the project and his command of the details is incredible!
this build is gonna let a lot of people know what the S800 is. sure did for me
I've seen tons of these types of builds. This is the cleanest and most well thought out of them all.
Just found this channel. I absolutely love how Larry's photos are incorporated into the video. They also do a great job showcasing the cars.
Larry worked for several years (don't know if he still is) for Speedhunters mag, you should look for his amazing photography. He is a great addition to the Hoonigan channel for sure.
it was a true honor to see this at the SF auto show, most likely the only time I'll be able to see this amazing car or one like it. thanks Daniel !
Just love how he explained all the details......he really knew his car inside out,...respect this guy
I do not know much about cars, but this one is pure style. I friggin' love it. Kudos to Daniel Wu for making such a beast, and to you, Larry, for documenting it :)
Everytime autofocus comes out I drool with how beautiful the photography. Stay safe and take care
That's gotta be one of the most beautiful Car I have ever seen. I have never seen anything like it! Amazing job restoring and customizing it.
Dude he’s awesome so down to earth and completely in love with his cars which is nice to see
Absolutely stunning.
Man, Daniel have really great taste for the interior. Amazed by his passion to detail. Cool car.
Man, this car is incredible. Japanese classics are far better than American classics. Larry's content is always my favorite hoonigan content! Also, I see those off white dunks Daniel Wu.
This just became one of my Top 10 favorite cars!
It's nice to see something that hasn't been swapped with an Ls motor just all around beautiful built
"I don't like to put radios in my cars cause I like to listen to the motor" 1000 salutes to you sir. On an another note I am a fan of your acting work since New Police Story. Currently waiting for S04 of Into The Badlands. Keep up the great work and of course stay safe during this pandemic.
Honda Soichiro would be very proud of this restoration. Thank you for sharing this epic story with us.
The best s800 i ever seen, awesome project 👏
Thanks for bringing this car back. It's a very nice period sports car that is rarely seen. The project is well finished all around. Well done.
This daniel wu guy sure has a great taste in cars
It's almost like he knows what things should look like.
This guy is super detailed very intelligent... something to strive for
Edward Okeyo Obala isn’t Wu also known as the carpet pisser in the big Lebowski ?
@@DxModel219 helps that the car is basically designed like a rolling work of art.
Great taste in women too. Lisa S is a smoke show!
I’ve probably watched this video 100 times now over the year love this build
huge respect for Daniel.
When Chris is just buying cars to showoff, Daniel actually got taste!
So much to say. I am really impressed with Daniel's depth of knowledge and commitment to this project. I'm just going to leave it at Sweet car, cool guy, great video...Wow
Very cool I'm a Sports Car guy on the EAST COAST .
I've seen 2 in my life.
I'm 64.
Is your name Impala?
I've never heard of the S800 before today, and I'm absolutely in love. It's a mini muscle car.
Enjoy when anyone restores vintage classics and adds modern upgrades. Enjoy his technical knowledge as well. +1 for the virgil SBs on his feet
How is it possible to thumbs down this video, never ever seen this car. Just stunning. Well done sir
Wow I have absolutely love him in Into The Badlands on Netflix, I had no clue he was into cars like this and this makes the video 10x better. This is exactly what I strive to do if I can make it big enough.
That car is one of the luckiest of its kind! Great Job Mr Wu!
Loved this car from the moment I saw a snippet of it at sema, very well executed. Also i have been obsessed with S800's since Phill Pennys JESUS hit the scene about 10 yrs ago, give that one a goog if you havent seen it.
I like how excited he is about showing of every detail of the car. I didnt even know this guy was a car but. Love his show.
Thank you Daniel for bringing that beauty into the world. Inspirational
Finally , a reason to become a movie star.
What a cool guy building cool cars.
That is probably the sweetest 510 (wing mirrors not with standing) I've ever seen
Car is gorgeous, and the wheels are fantastic!
Just cool AF! Love it Wu! The story behind the theme for car carried through to perfection. Bring on more old Japanese metal. Always wanted to get a 60's Mazda Luce and do something similar.
What a legend! I admire this guy even more! Having watched Into the Badlands I recognized his name immediately!
I've never seen this car before and I fell in love with it. That is one beautiful car.
I love the reference to being an architect during a build. I felt like this when I did my own Honda and would have loved to have all the names of everyone involved in the build under the bonnet (sorry hood!) - but in the end its literally hundreds of people!
I was looking up EF honda's and man what a cool find I stumbled across here. Thank you Larry and Thank you Daniel. Nice piece to cover
Stunning build, much respect for the artistry and the work put into this build 👍
That little Honda is so cool. 71 hp and 1700 lbs with a 9500 rpm redline. And I love the restoration and tasteful modifications.
I'm doing a restomod S800 myself at the moment. This is magnificent.
That is such an absolutely amazing build. The main challenge you face when working on such extremely rare cars is the need to fabricate from raw materials any replacement parts that you need because they just don't exist anymore.
I am so glad it isn't slammed with stretched tires and a bunch of camber. It looks so good.
could do with an inch drop i reckon. it just sits slightly high for its size.
@@dvtc8u so glad he did it and not you
@@cheesymoi it looks perfect as it is
Back in 1973 I had the privilege of driving the S800 regularly because I worked as a director of a Honda Car Dealer/Garage.
It made the Mini Cooper look like a Morris Minor on the start block. I loved it's motorbike power. Incredible for the 1970's. Even today I can remember some of the part numbers...
Honestly this car made me emotional I teared up is so beautiful
Easily one of the most beautiful cars ever. I love it.
Gosh, Daniel got taste and passion on this dope! Gorgeous masterpiece!
Out of all the amazing cars you‘ve reviewed, this is probably the greatest. I want this so bad!
Was waiting on this vid since last video you did with his datsun and we saw this sweet honda in the back! Cool content! Keep up the great work
This '68 Honda S800 is a nice classic! You sure brought it back to life! I once owned a Datson 510, and I miss it! It was one of my favorite cars!
The s quattro is staring at me... I live in the bay area. I can feel it calling me from his garage 😂
If it ever gets stolen they'll know who to contact...
Facts
lmao, yessir
So clean, so good! And to also mention, so much taste that went into this build I can savor it all the way to where I'm watching this video. Looks agile too for a 70ish HRSPRS?! Sending a chef's kiss to this car.
So glad I came back and saw this. I shared this vid with my dad who has an s2k and has had it since new.
