fun fact: the stunt coordinators said in an interview that walker had to really try hard to be bad at swordplay for the fights, cause percy is supposed to kind of suck and he had gotten way too good at swordplay. they said usually you would try to make an actor look better than they are, and this was a unique situation where they would get back notes to make him look worse and they would have to reply "this was already him being worse, he's going at 30%". they were super amused and proud about it.

I think it might help you guys to think of the seasons of Percy Jackson in relation to the movies of Harry Potter. Both book series were written to have the characters and audience grow together. You wanted a bigger battle in this series, a lot of adults did, but in the Sorcerer’s stone the final “battle” has Harry quickly burning Quirrel with his hands. Battle will become bigger, with higher stakes, as the Percy and his friends grow and the show matures.

In the books Gabe's death is very intentional and not at all an accident. Sally takes the package inside and keeps it unwrapped in the fridge just so it will turn Gabe to stone as he goes to get a beer. As previously commented, Gabe is much more abusive in the books and it seems almost just for Sally to indirectly murder him, but in the show they toned that down and also made it seem like an accident. In the books Sally sells the statue to a rare arts collector for a lot of money, quits her job at a candy store and goes back to school in the hopes of becoming a writer!

I was uncomfortable with the feeling of really embracing or liking him back then because he was like a depraved horrible person and somehow you're thrown with a backstory in the end of the series that I was a bit forced into feeling sorry for him. And this doesn't mean I hated the writing for doing this, or the books. Maybe it's just that those feelings are kinda valid(to feel very conflicted) and I liked that I was able to feel complex emotions for a complex character like him. He's a great compelling villain at the end of it all.

@@christhompson3301 for me personally it feels that way because it makes Luke seem more sympathetic from the jump while also showing that what he's doing is clearly wrong. But at the end of the day it's just my personal interpretation of how the show is going 😁

Diamond Dave is 100% right, these will definitely get darker as the seasons go along. As the kids grow up, the stakes get much much higher. In the books, Percy's internal humor makes the dangerous things the trio goes through much easier to discount, especially when reading, as your brain will comprehend and imagine what it can handle. With a TV show, you can't glaze over any info presented to you, and everything is right there in front of your face. Thus the stakes in the first book were much higher than in the first season, as to make this fit the target audience, ages 8-14, which is the same target audience as the books.

A common thing that some people get confused about/don’t know is that percy jackson isn’t even YA it’s middle grade and found in the kids section at book stores lolol! so definitely intended for younger audiences and lighthearted at first. I like to think that the books kinda grew along with its audience. I did grow up reading the books so i’m definitely bias but I really enjoyed the progression the books took so i’m excited to see how it plays out on screen. while I do think season 1 had their problems with episode length and them somehow knowing what’s going on before they should’ve, I still loved it. (also yes there arent really many drawn out fights in the first book, everything in general does happen pretty fast it’s kinda just one thing after another. I do think that certain things should’ve been drawn out more with this new medium but hopefully they’ll fix that with longer episodes!)

Yeah the point of Poseidon and Percy not getting time is that Luke, despite the ways he goes about it, is right. The gods are terrible parents. They rarely ever even claim their kids let alone take care of them. Luke isn’t a black and white villain. It’s also the reason he’s a dangerous character. He can easily recruit demigods and tempts Percy because they all feel abandoned. The show made the gods out to be a lot better than they are. We don’t even see Hermes at all in the first book.

For whatever flaws the first season had, I thought they really stuck the landing with this finale. The entire sequence on Olympus was fantastic. Lance Reddick (RIP king) was phenomenal as Zeus, and I actually love how they changed some aspects of the book to frame Poseidon as a better father. Toby Stephens did an amazing job as well, and I was so impressed at how well Walker Scobell played off both actors considering they're long time veterans and he's still somewhat of a newbie. That kid is going places, as are the rest of the cast. Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth) just won an award for her performance and imo it was well-deserved

@@christhompson3301 I think since Luke is more symapthic in this one and the emaphsis on Annabeth knowing his past/relationship with Hermes, it would be easy to write Annabeth understanding where Luke's coming from and believing that he still has good in him across the seasons.
They're probably going to build more on that in the second season and then by the third season (when Luke tricks her to hold the sky) that might be a breaking point for her.
      That's just my guess tho.

It wasn't so much that the gods were a direct cause (if I'm remembering right). It was that the kids were too powerful and were leveraging powers and favors from their parents to wreak destruction on the mortals against whatever side they were on.

I think people kind of exaggerate how much the books mature throughout the series. They deal with heavy themes, yes, but they maintain a tone that's accessible to young audiences throughout. Harry Potter changes a lot more drastically from book to book, in my opinion.
I am hoping that the show will be able to do more as these young actors mature. Longer episodes, bigger fights, more and more emotional moments, please! I want everyone who watches the show to believe in how big a badass Percy is.

    • @mjm3091
      @mjm3091 3 месяца назад +5

I mean depends what you consider darker or heavier theme. In my opinion this was already heavier than Harry Potter.
Monsters constantly try to end them, we have "implied" decapitation scene, story talks about disabilities, parental issues, abuse, death, grief and betrayal. Then you have much more serious/mature themes with story of Medusa and Hephastus.
In HP the worst we get first book is abuse, low level bullying, green coloured magical death and at least in movies a dude getting charcoaled to death. And theme wise it's really just a kid trying to crack a mystery, solve few puzzles and survive the bad guy.
And when we look at later books HP tries to somehow catch up - possession and fighting giant snakes in CoS, convicts and soul-eating monsters in PoA, deadly trials and death in GoF, bad teachers, abuse and grief in OoP, war, death, torture and sacrifices in HBP and DH. But it's still pretty timid. Especially with how non-graphic most of the deaths are. And how there is usually just one main threat that is the most disturbing part of each story.
In Percy Jackson - each fight we meet with cannibals, abusers and mass-murderers. By the end of book 5, we have so many graphic deaths that they probably will have to censor. Getting crushed inside a robot, getting melted by acid, all the amounts of sword and knife based injuries.
Like the only difference, where HP is more mature in my opinion is how fast the kids get sexualised and pushed into romantic storylines and how raunchy it gets, where as characters in Percy Jackson don't really have time for that, which it's nice to see much more timid series, when it comes to using their actors in this way (we still get those storylines, but with older characters or straight up adults - like Percy's mum, Medusa, Hephastus and later on people like Selena or Calypso).

    • @mjm3091
      @mjm3091 3 месяца назад +2

I do agree that Harry Potter changes a lot more drastically through book to book. But I mean it as a character - Harry Potter.
Percy is just a silly guy. Somehow sarcastic - but until the Heroes of Olympus, never actually that serious or too heavily affected by everything. He always pushes through, but as he stays under 16 for most of the first series - he is mostly a child.
Harry from abused kid, quite quickly turns into an entitled dude with hero complex. He is way more mean and wrong in his narrative. It affects the atmosphere more sometimes, compared to Percy being a ray of sunshine and sarcasm, even at worst mentally situations.

And Luke's betrayal was so unexpected in the books, especially because he did try to kill Percy. That's how we found out and our boy almost died in the last pages.

As for "Harry took on Voldemort" remember that he did so in book/movie 7. By the time this series reaches its conclusion, Percy is one powerful warrior. As for the length of the episodes, I heard an interview with the director, who said it took a WEEK just to film the fight scene with Percy and Luke (she also said the fireworks are coordinated with the action and dialogue, yet another little gem in a series full of them). And regarding the movies, they're both horrible. You'll get a laugh out of the first, but I'd recommend avoiding the second. It is a total mess but it does throw in several book/season 2 spoilers amongst the mishmash.

i understand the comparison to something like stand by me, but keep in mind that a movie like that is written FOR adult audiences primarily. percy jackson is middle grade, written for kids. at the end of the day it’s gonna abide by that age rating. the books do get darker as they go, i’d say most noticeably in book 3 where some teenage characters die. but overall the trauma the characters go thru is often dealt with through humor to keep it balanced.

I was waiting to see y’all’s reaction that it was Luke!! But overall that I’m really glad you guys gave this series a try!! I promise you it’ll just get better from here!! The first season feels like it honestly should. It seems light hearted and rush yes but if they are able to go all the way to a 5th season it’s definitely going to get crazy and darker from here. There’s so much more story to tell! Season 2 is going to be a lot crazier

I think the thing with the PJO books is that its aimed at young children and grows with the audience so I expect the series will do so too. I'd say by season 3 onwards thats when it takes a darker turn and hits some hard themes. Personally I think the slow building tension over seasons is much better than having massive battles per season because then it just loses its meaning and the battle in book 5 is very epic (in my opinion) so the build up will be worth it. In the books Poseidon and Percy dont have too many conversations either so I'd say its pretty much accurate tbh and as a reader youre always left wanting more from them, lol. I'm excited for season 2 - I hope they do longer episodes too (although I guess because they're taking into account young kids and people with ADHD they dont want the episodes to be too long for them). Regarding WW2, its implied in the books that it started because the children of Poseidon&Zeus were against the children of Hades; and with the American Civil War for example, it was a war between the Greek and Roman demigods. This finale was so good imo, it set the foundation for many later plotlines. Loved your reactions as always! See you in S2.

Oak we can't really give details about how the involvement of the God's and their offspring in historical wars (AND other historical happenings) because those are spoilers not only from the 2nd season, but the whole series in a way. Suffice to say most demigods don't really survive to adulthood to lead common lives, the ones you hear about as adults either became known historical figures in the human world or found a way to navigate the God's world and the creatures living in it in some way, sometimes both things at the same time, though obviously, regular humans only hear about the regular world side of their exploits. If you remember they started explained the concept of mist, and how human minds interpret the weird things in the closest way to normalcy they can (the chimera being a chihuahua for example), so many influential figures actions would be viewed by humans by that same lens.

In the books Gabe was abusive and I don’t like they changed that. They also made him unemployed which cancelled one of my favorite book moments!
Percy was on the Quest across the country and Gabe was all over tv talking about saving his wife from her delinquent son while promoting his business 🙄 then when Percy got on tv he said my stepdad is so grateful he’s giving all the people of Los Angeles a free appliance 😂😂😂😂😂 I loved the sass and pettiness!

Absolutely loved this series as a person who read the entire Riordanverse and not just the Percy Jackson books (it's like 20 books I think). This season wasn't perfect but considering that s2 was already greenlit I think we're gonna get longer episodes as they know what to be expect. Especially the author Rick Riordan has never written a screenplay before so it was an entirely new experience.
The cast absolutely crushed it, I couldn't be more happy with them. I still remember watching Adam Project and fan casting Walker as Percy. You can't imagine how happy I was when he was actually cast! Nobody deserves the role more than him. But Leah and Aryan also blew me away, they truly elevated the characters in ways I never would have expected.
The actor for Zeus gave me goosebumps with his performance, I was most cautious about how anybody would pull of that insanely powerful presence but yeah. He was absolutely fabulous. Unfortunately he passed away so I send my condolences to his family and hope he's in a better place now.
I'm curious about the recast though, imagine setting such a high bar in just one scene.

The necklaces the campers wear have beads that represent each year they have been at Camp Half-Blood. Each bead is painted to represent something that happened that year at camp and everyone will have the same design on theirs. Annabeth's and Luke's look the same because they both arrived at the same time. It is not shown in the tv show but Percy should be getting his necklace at the end of this summer - a black bead with a trident on it.

    • @shyguy6215

gonna be honest i like how they did the fight scene with Luke and Percy at the end because in the book Luke just kinda summons a deadly scorpion to sting Percy and then leaves and i never liked that, so seeing him trying to recruit him at the end felt like a great change from the book. overall as a livelong fan of the books the only gripe i have is how short the episodes are. hopefuly this takes off and becomes its own universe like the marvel universe because there is so much potential with there being over 20 books that Rick has written.

I think the reason the fight with Ares so short is because he would not be able to beat him all the way to the death. Percy specifically set the terms as whoever gets first blood because that’s something he could maybe do. As Percy grows up and becomes a strong warrior he has longer and more intense fights with worse enemies.

  • @heddadybvadskog-nebb5603

So in the book the fight between Percy and Luke happens in the woods like in the show (minus the portals) but Annabeth is not there. And bc she both considers Luke family and also has a bit of a crush on him, she struggles a lot with believing Percy when he says what happened and it is actually one of Annabeth's deeper internal conflicts in the books. I get why they changed it but I am kind of sad about it too.

This series was written for middle grade, so I think the show did a really great job making it accessible to that age-range but also 'maturing' a few things to appeal to older audiences, too. I know it's blasphemy, but the books are good, but definitely not in my favorites just because of how young they skew so I'm glad they changed up some stuff for the show. Honestly, it feels like an author's dream to get to re-visit an old story of yours and get to tweak things you've learned to do better for a new medium (which is how the author has described working on this series). We're always growing and changing as writers, so it's cool that he got to have some input on what he'd like the story to look like now that he has a better idea where it's going and which themes he wants to highlight.
As for the WWII stuff, it's hinted in the books that all the main players in that war were children of the 'big three' - and like we saw with Percy, those kids have a ton of power that they can use - and then drag their parents into their own battles. So I don't think it's a situation where there's one inciting incident and then the gods are at war, it's a slower build up that then breaks into world-spanning violence. Hence why the 'big three' no longer are 'allowed' to have children (not that Poseidon or Zeus seemed to follow that). Another example one could look at was the Trojan War - the gods were at war as well as their children (or those they favored) which led to a ton of pain and suffering

I've mentioned this in a past episode, but I'll re-iterate it. The books were made to grow with the audience, similar to Harry Potter. And, in a similar manner, because these are kind of "coming of age stories," the books DO get darker and more mature. They WILL explore more aspects of humans and Demigods living in the same world, and sometimes it gets a little dicey.
We'll meet more colorful characters that force our main group to change and develop and meet more powerful enemies our heroes will have to overcome.
Honestly, I think the first book is my least favorite. I honestly think the books get better, so I'm hoping the series does as well.

One thing I am happy they added to this show is that the Gods have golden blood, because that's how it is in the books and the myths. Also, Gabe on the show was more likeable than he was in the books (well in the first book), and because of that I actually feel bad for him getting turned to stone here. But in the books, it is well deserved, because he is so much worse. In the books, Gabe was verbally and physically abusive towards Sally (Percy's mom). And she didn't stand up for herself in the books like in the show. Percy didn't even know he was hitting her until the end, and when Percy found out (and found the box containing Medusa's head in his room) he gave it to her to use on him. She then sold his statue for a good amount of money (I think, I can't remember that part). But it was still very well deserved.

It seems like, typically, people who have read the books hate the movies, and people who haven't like them (or, at least the first one). The movie focuses on being a film, before it's an adaptation. It has an older main character, and is trying to be more appealing to all ages. It also has some of the bigger and more dramatic scenes that you guys were hoping for. You might actually prefer it over the show!
It will spoil future parts of the series for you, especially if you watch the second one, which contains a big reveal about Percy's destiny if I remember correctly. I think it's really up to you whether it's worth it.

Hi so to answer the question about ww2!!! So basically in the books the author kinda infered that ww2 was secretly a war between demigods! Basically the children of the gods are really powerful and sometimes famous people in history in this world are secretly demigods so ww2 was a bunch of demigod leaders going after one another. Don't want to give to much away because in later seasons they will explain further why this was so bad and started the war!
Another thing the show will definitely pick up in pace and action as it goes on! There are 5 books in the first series and our main characters go from 12-16 so the show should age with them! Looking forward to season 2 and especially season 3 which will pretty much answer all your questions lol
