- In this Ecuador video, I try to photograph 3 wildlife targets: Tropical Parulas, White-whiskered Hermits, and a baby Armadillo. I've been scouting different areas in the jungle where each of these species like to hang out. I set out with the Sony a7R4 and 200-600G lens for an awesome day of Wildlife Photography! Hope you enjoyed and let me know what you think! Happy birding!

Hey! A baby Armadillo was definitely not on my list of species to photograph before leaving to Ecuador. But I'm very glad I was able to see one. I love those unexpected photography moments! Hope you enjoyed and happy birding :)
Great shots! A couple of things just for you information: you were probably seeing nine-banded armadillo near Mindo, and the odd thing about the young is that they are born as identical quadruplets. You probably had found a hermit lek, where males gather to sing and display to attract females.
Another excellent video, and outstanding images, enjoy the rest of your trip and keep the videos coming. Thanks for sharing your experience.
So glad you enjoyed the video/series! Thank you!
Hey Stef, that baby Armadillo is so cute. Seeing one of its kind for the first time. Thanks for sharing your wonderful time with this guy and the birds. Wating for more such content. Enjoy the trip.
Thank you! I have seen adult armadillos in the past but they are much more flighty. Glad you enjoyed and I'm excited to share more!
Awesome exploration of tropical forest.
Your set up is no joke! Beautiful imagery, loving the videos Stefano!
Thanks a lot, Evan! Glad you're enjoying them!
Great fun an Armadillo awesome
Thank you! They were really fun to watch 😁
Congrats with amazing shots of these stunning birds and this lovely animal Armadillo. Very nice to watch your movies. Wonderful moments you share.
Best regards, Knut.
Thank you so much, Knut!
I absolutely loved it, thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much!!
I literally jumped with happiness when you saw that cute animal 😃yeppeeee👏👏👏
Wow.. I'm so happy to watch the whole effort by you to shoot wildlife. Specifically baby Armadillo is so cute.
Thank you! They really are! I found it interesting how small and young they are when they're left on their own.
Awesome video Stefano, thanks for taking us along!
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful!
Amazing again and well done on all your captures 👏
I'm still watching plenty of video on the a7r4 😩🤯🤪
Thank you so much 😀
Great shots and gorgeous locations! Another pro tip for walking bends on trails - mostly in forests or woodlands where the trail is well lit and the sun is behind you - is to make sure that your shadow doesn't lead the way around the bend as that will also startle quail, pigeons, finches, etc., which may be foraging on the trail or low in the vegetation beside the trail.
Enjoying your videos - you have a great presentation style that captures the excitement of the moment and some cracking shots!
That means a lot, thank you!
man your photos are just amazing!! love your vids man!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoy!

Really nice video Stefano! It looks like bird heaven this place. I can totally understand your excitement :) By the way, its awesome to see how your videos improve. Great job! Keep them coming.
Thanks, Trond! That means a lot. It is a pretty incredible place. Definitely the best I've been to so far. I highly recommend it 🙂
@@StefanoIaniro Its on my wishlist. Who knows, maybe our roads crosses in Ecuador one day :)
@@trondwestby5264 That would be awesome! If ever you're wanting to go to South America, definitely let me know. Would be cool to meet up!
Thats weird, youtube is only letting me like this once! 😜 Amazing video as always, i cant wait for the next!
Hahaha thanks a lot bud! Glad you enjoyed
Great video, loved the Armadillo, I have only seen once in the wildat night, in Panama .
Me too! Before this I've only ever seen them at night!
Like your videos I took your suggestion and ordered a rain cover to add to my Gear protect my Camera gear while out shooting . Like your stuff always Good narration and clips .....
Wow good for you bud .... stuck with it and got a great baby armadillo image !! And the birds
Thank you so much 🙂
Too cute of a armadillo, good stuff man. Keep it coming.
Thanks man! I was definitely surprised to see him.
So cool!
Thank you!!
I quite enjoy your passion and your enthuasim in your videos. I watch many other professional wildlife photographers but after a while in the business they seem to lose that magic that conveys their love of their work. Thank you for sharing your efforts.
That means a lot, thank you! And I'm very happy to hear you enjoy the videos!
Don’t have your amazing lenses, so living vicariously through your videos haha! Amazing shots brother !
Hahaha, thanks a lot! 😅
🔥🔥🔥 best episode yet!!
Thanks a lot bud! 😎
It was worth your while to scope out the armadillo!! Nice shots overall on your trip!
Thank you so much! I would have liked to get more Armadillo shots, but didn't want to disturb the little guy too much!
Love your Ecuador series, great content, keep them coming!
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun filming and now editing the videos. Glad you enjoy 😀
Great video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I really love your vids thank you. Keep it u forsure!
Glad you enjoy! Thanks for watching!
Amazing!!!
Thank you!
Awesome Stefano. Really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed 🙂
Amazing little fellow.
They really are! I know armadillos have bad eyesight, I wonder if it's worse when they're babies. As long as I didn't move, they never could really tell I was there.
Nice sir
Can you please tell me which is better lens ( picture quality, sharpness , colour ) ? Sony 100-400 gm or Sony 200-600 ? For nature photography, landscape, Bird, overall travel purpose ..
Been watching your videos, what was your deciding factor in going to Ecuador? Did you have a guided tour or just went on your own ? I loved all the different birds you photographed there. I love bird photography as well.
Cheers,
Tina
I have quite a few friends who are birders/photographers and they all really recommended it. Mindo is also one of the top hotspots in the world for birds! We went on our own. We kinda like the idea of discovering a new place by ourselves. But I met a few people taking tours while we were there and they all seem very pleased. I don't think there's a good or bad decision, it's all up to personal preferences. Either way you'll see a ton of birds 🙂
are these photos SOOC or edited? how come when i take low shutter speed photos, it's blurry as hell 😂 but yours at 1/100 still looks super good. also, which mode do you shoot on, S or A priority? thanks in advance
Where did you stay at in this video?. loving your videos and photography.
Hi Stefano. What a amazing video, congratulations. Can you do a tutorial of bird photography? Or give me a little tips for that. Thank you, greetings from colombia
Hey! Thank you so much! I can definitely do a tip video in the future 🙂
Nice as alway :)
I want to upgrade from Sony a6600 to A7R4
Do you recommend for bird photography
Mate, what can you say about the Sony A7R4? Is it good on birds photography?
Hi! What tripod do you use?
Love your enthusiasm. Also did you ever try the HECS clothing I hear it’s especially effective for concealment from birds.
Thank you! And no I've never heard of it. I'll look into it 🙂
Stefano Ianiro Wildlife I “might” have persuaded you wife to get me a set for Christmas. If that’s the case I’ll let you know how it is.
@@Preacherski Haha yeah definitely let me know! Thanks!
Love this video
Thank you!
@@StefanoIaniro stefano, i am looking for a birding lodge in Ecuador to go for a month, any recommendations, would need to have reliable WiFi since i will still be working a few days
@@ivan11cast I have a video out talking about where I stayed in Mindo. Not sure where you're going, but if I was going back to Mindo, I'd probably choose the Yellow House. Very affordable, nice trails, and good wifi. I was able to upload RUclips videos and stream movies. Otherwise the other location that's more higher end near Mindo would be El Septimo Paraiso. They also have a restaurant on site. There's a bunch of other but haven't had a chance to visit them yet.
@@StefanoIaniro very much appreciated, keep your videos coming, they are amazing
@@ivan11cast Thank you 🙂
how do you deal with mosquitos in such tropics when there so many of them?? I find it impossible to photograph in such conditions, I hope you reply.
Dear Stefano, I absolutely love the pictures you're getting while in Ecuador! I recently upgraded to the A7R IV and had the 200-600 (previously on the A7III) but am experiencing a pretty annoying issue. Pretty much every shot has some sort of blur/unshaprness, especially noticable at 1:1 in Lightroom. I've tested at many shutter speeds, even 1/2500+ but this doesn't seem to matter. I was wondering if it's possible for you to provide me and/or the viewers with a few RAW images so I can verify the issue? This would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Hey! I have a video coming out in a couple of days comparing the 100-400 vs the 200-600. I will be including RAWs in the video. If you watch the video and still want me to throw some in a folder for you, just let me know! 🙂
You may have already tried these/know about these issues that can occur, but just to make sure here are a couple things you can try/keep in mind:
- Atmospheric distortion - if your subjects are far out and you're doing heavier crops, your photos may appear soft due to heat waves, fog, etc.
- Not sure if you're using higher ISOs, but the a7RIV doesn't handle noise too well. I have some images taken in crop mode around ISO 6400 and at 1:1 don't appear too sharp, but zooming out a little bit reveals they are in fact sharp.
- Possibly a bad copy of the lens! Bring it to a camera store to test it against their copies.
- Take bursts instead of single images. Sometimes the shake caused from initially hitting the shutter causes minor motion blur in images. Taking bursts allows more time for your hands to stabilize and increases the probability of getting sharper images.
Again, you might already know the above. Just wanted to add it in case it might be helpful. If you have any questions, ask away, I'd love to help if I can!
@@StefanoIaniro Awesome! Indeed I am aware of the potential issues you mentioned.
The weirdest encounter so far was a test shot of a sturdy branch, approximately 10m away from me. Camera on a gimbal head/tripod, shooting at 1/1600 f6.3 iso 320. Shot a burst of 7 or 8 images, just one was kind of sharp at 1:1 and the rest were not even close. This was never even close to an issue on the A7 III, with that camera I've shot handheld at 1/80 iso 2000 with close to pinsharp results.
I'm at the point of considering low temperature (2-5 degrees Celcius) as a potential cause, even though I can't imagine this should cause this issue.
Anyway, I appreciate your extensive answer / help and look forward to the video :) If/when I figure out what the issue was I'll let you know!
Have a good one.
@@N1RR0 Hi, did you figure out the issue? I recently got this combo and had a similar issue it's so frustrating.
Which lodge did you stay at? Lovely shots by the way
Thank you! And my most recent video talks about where we stayed 🙂
most of your shots where in crop mode, have you think the idea of using aps-c?
Yeah I've used aps-c cameras in the past. I photograph in a lot of darker situations though so the full-frame sensors have been a blessing. Luckily with the a7R4 I get the best of both worlds!
How far could he go?? He's so cute.
AWESOME! loved that vid buddy! looks a fantastic place :) have a sub ;) JP
Thanks a lot bud! Glad you enjoyed 😁😁
Just started my channel up been a stalker till now lol but this in on my hit list as a go to place 👌.. I get the warbler sentiment I’ve spent many an hour in a reed bed looking for warblers one the uk 😂... keep up the awesome content!
@@JPLamoureuxsTravels I highly recommend it! I visited France last year but sadly didn't get too many European Warblers. I'll need to return at some point to do some more birding. Glad you enjoy the content 🙂
And really rice intro which makes me to freeze to watch this video till the end.
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you 🙂
I've been intrigued by your Ecuador series, as my wife is a native Ecuadorian (Quito). She goes back every winter to visit family, so I'm going to go with her December 2020 to do some bird photography. Tandayapa and Cosanga look like interesting places to me, and not too far from Quito. But, I keep seeing the Magic Birding Circuit listed online when I research those areas, and it seems that the lodges in those areas want you to go on predesigned tours with other photographers. I want to be on my own, or perhaps with a hired guide from time to time. I'm looking for just a room, or a room and meal package. Did you stay at places where you could sleep and eat, and otherwise go out on your own? And do you have any that you'd be willing to share? I haven't seen a video yet where you discuss lodgings and food, though it's possible I simply missed it somewhere :-)
I'm actually working on a video right now talking about the 4 locations we stayed at. It should answer your questions! It will be out by the end of the week. If you watch the video when it comes out and have any other questions, feel free to ask :)
Curious as to why you're shooting at such high iso's? Your video looked a little blown out then I see your photos and they too are a little over exposed. I see your posted settings for the stills and your at 1600, 1/125th, F6.3 on birds sitting on branches? Why not open that 200-600 up to F5.6, put that iso down to 100, and shoot at like 1/20th? Granted I'm not there, and I know the canopy creates some shadows, but if you shoot RAW and try and keep your iso at 100 you're going to have the full 15 stops of dynamic range that the A7RIV is capable of, and you're going to get a lot more from your pics.
Unless I'm missing something.
Awsome video aside from the exposure IMO, looks like a lot of fun.
Hmm, that's strange. I have watched it on a couple devices and I noticed on my TV the whole video was darker, and on my laptop is brighter. Looking at my photos in Lightroom, I actually feel like the subjects are a tad underexposed haha. The backgrounds themselves may be overexposed due to light trickling through the canopy, but I was mostly exposing for the subject, not the background. I could have brought down highlights in post to adjust, but it's kind of a personal preference, I do like the brighter backgrounds.
In terms of settings, the 200-600 only goes to f/5.6 in the shorter zoom ranges. Once you're out at further zooms you're restricted to 6.3 or lower. So f/6.3 at ISO100, my shutter speed would have to be lower than 1/20th for most of the situations I was in. I spoke about it in a previous video, but I like to keep my ISO around 800-1600, that way I only worry about adjusting shutter speed, which is beneficial for fast moving subjects (like the warblers and hermits in the video). Even at the fruit feeders there is usually a lot of action so birds tend to move around quite a bit. Hope that clarifies a bit and glad you enjoyed! It was a really fun day!
Hi Stefano. The images look a bit bright to me as well. But I've come to learn after sharing my images with other photographers that it's impossible for people to see the same thing. What looks fine on my monitor looks too dark/light on someone else's.
The ibis on the A7RIV should give you some confidence shooting at lower shutter speeds while hand held. One review I watched said down to 1/15th.
Yeah I'll definitely try to view my videos on multiple devices before exporting, cause I've watched this video on 3 different devices and yeah, they all look different lol. Thanks for letting me know guys!
Yeah I've been quite pleased with the IBIS. On multiple occasions I was handholding at 1/50th with good success. Pretty awesome! I'll definitely try pushing it lower and lower in future outings!
Still waiting for the 100-400 Review :)
I'll have a video coming out comparing it to the 200-600 in the field and then another one coming out with my opinions after looking at all the files 🙂
@@StefanoIaniro sounds good :)
Did you get to test the 100400GM and what are your thoughts vs 200600? Take care
Yep! I believe next weeks video should be the 100-400 vs 200-600, so I'll give all my thoughts in that video 🙂
@@StefanoIaniro looking forward to it. I am worried I'll need both lenses! Lol. I own the 100400GM on my R4 and like it a lot...so selling it isn't an option :(
@@njrtech hahaha honestly it's very difficult to decide between the two! Both have their pros and cons!
@@StefanoIaniro yes that's what I am worried about. The close focus at 3 feet of the 100400G is invaluable, and I prefer it to to a dedicated macro because the 100400 focuses much faster than a macro can, and I don't have to get excessively close which scares critters away. On the other hand, for rach the 200600 will equal 900mm in APSC mode on the R4 vs 600mm with the 100400. The advantage is you can do without an extender and keep your aperture. I think Sony made this hard on purpose :)
@@njrtech Exactly! Haha I bring up those points in the video 🙂
Are you at the Yellow House.
I have just purchased the Sony a7riv and I can not believe how noisy is the sensor!!
Yeah definitely one of the downsides of a high MP sensor!
@@StefanoIaniro actually yes its pretty common but this camera got strange colour in the grain visible mainly in dark areas
@@jazinzlaty4823 Interesting! What is your ISO for the photos that have weird color noise? And how close are you zooming in?
@@StefanoIaniro iso 1000,600mm,50ft
@@jazinzlaty4823 Thank you, I'll check out some of my images with similar settings. I know in the past when I've viewed my images and I zoomed in past 100% there is color noise, as well. But it really only gave me trouble above ISO 3200. Thanks for letting me know!
