  • Fluid Art Blooms: Australian Floetrol vs. US Floetrol vs. Amsterdam Paint vs. Wood Conditioner
    Everyone asked for a video for the differences in floetrol and the different bases of cell activator. My favorite honestly is the paint and water by amsterdam. I am so glad i did this paint/art experiment to determine this. It now give me another experiment to do on a round board to see if large scale the amsterdam paint and water reacts the same. So much love to you all for the support. Happy painting!
    The colors are a mixture of floetrol, gac800, and gloss medium and varnish 50/30/20% thats my regular pouring medium
    original bloom technique: shelee art: www.sheleeart.com
    Canvas is 4.25 in tiles
    Floetrol US: mixed 1:1:25 paint to pouring medium
    then i added 3 drops of wood conditioner to the US version
    Floetrol Australia: mixed 1:1 paint to pouring medium
    Amsterdam: 18 grams paint, 7 grams water

    Thanks so much for this analysis. Believe it or not just today I was in my studio experimenting with additives to the American floetrol in order to get the same results as the Australian floetrol, because I can't in good conscience keep paying such exorbitant amounts for this bloom gold. The minwax is okay, but not exactly the same effect. Now the water and Amsterdam white?! Wow! I'm getting out of bed right now to go try it. Invaluable info!!! Thanks! ❤️

      This is just the cell activator though, isn't it? Rather than the medium used to dilute the paints, which we'd still need to get. Looking at Molly's description box, she's still using Floetrol, GAC800, gloss medium, and varnish in her Pouring Medium for all these examples, no? 🥴

    Hi Molly & thanks for this tutorial. It took me several months to finally figure out that there are three different mixing methods & ratios per each painting.
    -base pillow paint
    -cell activator
    -colored paints
    That would be so helpful if you did a video on explaining which each one does what & how along with a precise recipes for each individual phase of the process. Just an idea that would be very helpful in separating those three components.

    This definitely was an awesome experiment Molly! Look how easy was for you to create cells, actually with all of them! I loved the Aussie mix and the last with Water & Amsterdam. I guess it doesn't matter how you mixed your paints since the cell activator was what created the Shelee Bloom! Fabulous! Thank you so much Molly! You're the bomb! 😁Keep well dear Molly! 🙏Love you, 😊Bunny🐇💗😍 P.S. They were beautiful...as usual!

    I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I am probably much like everyone else who stumbled upon this art form and then fumbled for a month or so with recipes to make the ingredients react a certain way to produce the coveted cells, buying a bunch of stuff . Trying to find one recipe by sifting through all of the visual material available is time consuming and while every video I watched provided more ideas I just wanted a base point to start at, a constant, something to turn to when nothing I experimented with that day worked. Your video summed up the basics of how to repeatedly produce pouring medium and activator combo from fairly common ingredients that will do the same thing every time. I took the course after the fact but you were the little light bulb that initially went on in my head with your technique. Thank you

      I'm not sure if I've misunderstood, but despite the cell activator now only needing to be Amsterdam plus water, don't you _still_ need all the mixing paraphernalia products, because you still have to create a Pouring Medium to dilute the paints before you even start? PM needs Floetrol, GAC800, gloss medium, varnish etc, yes...?
      The cell activator bit is relatively tiny compared to the volume of PM needed for each pour.
      As I say, it's possible I've missed something important en route here, but I'm relatively new to this, and still trying to understand it all! 🤗

      13:59 Hi Molly, the Amsterdam white and water is just the cell activator and a process separate from thinning your paints for a pour? The thinning of the paint is done separately using what ever recipe one uses as a pouring medium, such as Floetrol, varnish, GAC 800or whatever a person uses to thin paint? Thank you for the lesson it’s easy to see what cell activator works best!

    Floetrol is a latex house paint conditioner. It increases the flow of house paint and reduces brush strokes. Before pouring became popular, it was never advertised as a “pouring medium”. Their marketing department added that after youtubers started using it to create cells in acrylic paints. If you use it for that effect you will get better results mixing it into the paint rather than adding it on top of the paint or adding the paint onto a puddle of floetrol. The reason that cells form from adding floetrol, silicone, any oil-based or mineral spirit solvent-based products, is because these things do not bind to the acrylic polymer or act as a repellent (oil and water(based) don’t mix). Silicones and oil-based products can become trapped in the layers of acrylic paint and never cure. This can lead to the layers peeling off or bubbles or cracks appearing after many months or years. Acrylics dry through the evaporation of water out of the binder, leaving the acrylic polymer film. Technically acrylic is water solvent, but not water soluble. (Meaning it does not dissolve into the water-like watercolor binders do). If you use more than the recommended amount of water (typically no more than 25% for professional grade acrylics, 10-15% for student or craft grade) then you get cells because the acrylic polymer in the binder can’t adhere to itself to create a continuous film as it dries. It effects the adhesion properties of the binder not just to itself, but also to the surface you are pouring on.
    I’d be interested in the longevity of your pours. Also in seeing pours that have failed.

    • @MOLLYSARTISTRY
      @MOLLYSARTISTRY  3 года назад +1

      Yes you are correct in the above! I have explained this as well in some other videos. I agree on the silicone too which is why i don't use it as often anymore in my paintings. Longevity is always a question and until these paintings have been around longer than the ~4 years i have been doing it i will have a better idea. For now they have been fine! I have just posted as well some videos of my fails and how i correct them. Thanks for the feedback and i hope you enjoy my channel!

      The one thing that i have done research in as has golden on its website is the water component. You can add upwards of 50% without significant adhesion issues and it depends on the brand, quality, and binders they use. There is a great article on the just paint website by golden!

    Omg thank you so much! I love the Amsterdam 😍. I use Floetrol now and I get so good cells but not like that. You are amazing and so talented and so helpful. Nothing but respect for you that you help others try and improve themselves and figure things out. 💕

    When my son was a toddler when people said, "hurray" he thought that they were saying "parade". I loved the idea behind the thought. So, to this day when we want to say hurray we just turn the situation into a parade! Why not? And I'd like to say to you Ms Molly, PARADE!
    Going to try Amsterdam white & water as soon as I get up in the morning. Hopefully, I'll have my own parade after painting.

    Thanks Molly. I really appreciate this. Things like Flotrol are an actual investment for me. And I was totally curious what would be the best option. I love the Amsterdam too. I think that will be the route I go.

    Hello Molly je découvre aujourd'hui ces 4 propositions, et le dernier est mon préféré. Je vais regarder la liste des produits. J'adore cet art, mais je suis encore une débutante et c'est vrai que contrairement à ce que les peintres classiques peuvent penser, c'est un art difficile à comprendre. Il faut beaucoup tester.En plus nous n'avons pas toujours en Europe les mêmes produits qu'au USA, et c'est difficile de trouver les équivalents. Mais on garde la foi. 😁💖♥️💖♥️

    Sorry Molly for the question, but the white Amsterdam bottle is simply a pot of white color that you mix with water and other colors. That's what I have to understand, you use white as a pouring medium.

    • @MOLLYSARTISTRY
      @MOLLYSARTISTRY  3 года назад

      The jug of white was titanium white paint. I mixed it with 4 different mediums. Water, US floetrol, Australian floetrol, and US floetrol +wood conditioner

      @@MOLLYSARTISTRY Hi Molly, thanks for your answer. I understand better now. From France I had activated the video translator of youtube but at the beginning you speak and it doesn't translate anything so it was a problem for me to understand but now it's clear. In the white of titanium of amsterdam you mixed a little of the 3 other bottles. Thank you for your sharing and your videos I learn a lot with you, I am a beginner in the pouring.

    There is a new recipe that combines 1 part owatrol, 1 part aussie floetrol, and 1 part american floetrol that creates lovely lacing. I think Kathy Anderson is where I saw it. She used it with all the colors on a house paint pillow. Pretty stunning and it would cut down the cost of those wanting to use the aussie floetrol. On the first in your experiment you did not blow it out like you did the others and I think most have found a one to seven ratio works best with the american floetrol. Also using a torch brings out more cells and lacing.

    All of these are cool and beautiful in their own way , my favorite is a battle between Amsterdam and the Australian Flotrol. Money wise Kim going with Amsterdam . Thank you for this info.
